    Hannah I just found your channel and was particularly interested in your no buy year. I thought you did a tremendous job of explaining how it changed your life and this video of your no buy one year later was so authentic. The PR section did have me thinking that whilst it didn't replicate the shopping cycle addiction you addressed via your no buy, PR for me, kind of influences viewers to buy things they may not necessarily need or are able to afford and therefore is more of a challenge for them than the receiver of the PR. Just my thoughts no criticism intended.

    So many good things here, as usual, but the one I put in the notes on my phone: "numbness to the specialness of our own lives." Hannah. HANNAH. So freaking good!!! I am so glad you are sharing your journey with us. Preciousness in all the turns.❤️

    Truly, this may be one of your most poignant, positively impactful, wonderfully executed and meaningful videos to date. SO much acquired wisdom to carry you through this journey. Nothing, absolutely NOTHING, can compare to the loving, calm balance settled into the heart when you 'finally get it' about gratitude. Joe. Sadie. Your life. Your work. Your contributions. YOU. Brava, Dear Hannah.

    I think our lack of gratitude can sneak up on us. I remember my talking to my Aunt years ago and complaining about my job. She told me I should be grateful for what I have. I disliked my job a lot and resented the comment. I later thought to myself while stewing about it, what do I have to be grateful for? When I really thought about it, I realised how terrible that was. I have a great family, the kind that many people have looked at and said to me, now that's what family is - I wish I had a family like yours. I have a great home, a car to get where I need to. That thought in my head showed the lack of appreciation that I extended to those hugely amazing things, especially my family and the home I had with my family. I thought about why and realised I was taking them for granted. They were a given in the equation of my life. I love them, but I wasn't fully appreciating the value they brought to my life. I think it helps to think about and remind yourself of the things you're grateful for regularly. I used to pray nightly and put that in my prayers. Someone once told me you're not supposed to pray to make requests but to give praise, to thank God. This line of thought is a good reminder to myself to get back to that :)

    Here I am at the last video. I started watching this a few weeks ago intermittently, as I have occasionally heard you make referrals to this life-transforming year and was curious. Then I got ill for a solid week and this playlist of yours kept me company. I found the whole thing fascinating and could see the growth happening for you. As your year started to come to an end, and you felt yourself turn a corner, so did I begin to feel better, sit up straight, and take solid, deep, uninterrupted breaths. Thank you for your company, and the thought-provoking content, which I will be mulling over for weeks and months to come.

    So I've decided to do a no buy on most things (not clothes because its not a way I overspend these days), and what is interesting is my wife's commentary on the no buy after overhearing me listen to you for ages and ages (also, as she says, "the swedish lady who is like your poet Hannah"). She's seen me struggle with budgeting and finances and feeling like my brain is not wired in a way to manage money/desire/needs. I kinda expected her to tease me about it, because #youtubemademedoit, but she had such a wonderful perspective about how youtube influencers are next level personal development groups. Which is an idea I want to consider. What if the influence is not just great skin care (hello new retinol cream that is half the price of my current retinoid), but cognitive behavioral tricks. In one episode, you too can learn to blend shimmer shadow and not waste your forties obsessing over buying skincare, but instead relearn french and delve deeper into the art of storytelling. I dig it. (But I am a little scared to lose my favorite self medication).

      I'm toying with starting a no buy year for 2020, and I am also sad even THINKING about the idea of giving up my favorite form of self medication! That's a great way to describe it.

    Hannah, I have watched almost all of your videos and have especially loved the ones that are introspective and follow your journey through shopping, overspending, budgeting and analyzing your love of beautiful things and your relationship to them. I feel like I have too many thoughts and feelings to describe them here, but I want to say that the few seconds where you touch on gratitude and being able to actually access the feelings to express It, really struck a deep chord with me. I will be thinking about this a lot in the coming days and into 2020. I am so glad that you said these words in this way and planted a seed for me. Countless times this year I have thought that I need to be more grateful for the life and things that I have, and if I could just remember that on a daily basis I would be happier. But it never occurred to me until you said it - how our culture is casual about pulling that out of our back pocket, etc.- that it is easier said than done. It may be more of a way of being - a journey of awareness, a muscle to be exercised.

    I think it's the essence of consumerism to keep people wanting things. Other goals become superseded by that craving and trying to satisfy it. I think it's bigger than you, although one's personal psychology is inevitably implicated. It's the tinsel and glitter effect, literally. One gets caught up with wanting glitter on everything: glittery newness, novelty, a buzz that eventually becomes a substitute for true fulfilment. I guess the optimum is to have a healthy balance between worthwhile aspirations, which demands a degree of discontent with the present circumstances, but enough self-fulfilment and joy to be able to live in the here and now.

    Have you thought about writing a essay on your experiences the last 2 years? I feel like their are echo’s of the Joe/Sadie essay in what you’ve gone through. I wonder if they would be interested in a follow up essay. I feel like what you’re talking about is incredibly timely to how a lot of people are feeling with consumerism and healthy shopping habits.

    On gratitude, I would really recommend getting a little notebook and trying to write down a few things you’re grateful for each day (or every other day when you remember). You naturally train your brain to look for the positives, and the bonus of writing it down is that you have all these things you’re grateful in one place if you are feeling down. So it’s a great pick me up as well

    I just finished y makeup inventory and I am astounded by the sheer number of items I own. I've decided with complete certainty on a strict $30 a month budget for makeup/skincare. I can roll over unused money until I reach a maximum of $100, then any roll-over must go directly into my savings account. I've hemmed and hawwed over doing a no buy, a low buy and a higher budget, but I have decided the buck stops here and now. Also, gifts and gift cards do not count. If I really need a skincare item and its over $30, I must use money from my personal budget(which is $25 per week).

    After giving it much thought I decided to start a No Buy year in 2020, and I’ve been rewatching your videos and the experiences of other youtubers to make sure I approach things the right way. Thank you for being such an inspiration! Especially when you state that things might get worse before they get better :)
    Another aspect I saw was how reflective you’ve been of the whole process because you have a YT channel. So one thing I’ll do for myself is journal about my No-Buy, do monthly check-ins with myself to evaluate how I’m doing, what’s working and what isn’t, in the hopes of having material at the end of 2020 to track my own evolution through the year. Can’t wait to start and also to see where your own path takes you, thank you for all the wonderful content and I wish you very happy holidays!

    I really appreciate what you said about gratefulness. I’ve got a great life -it’s not perfect and there’s a lot missing from it -but looking at what I’ve done and what I am building for myself with my career, and what I’ve achieved and the kinds of friends I have, I have a lot to be grateful for. But it’s hard to feel grateful when I feel I missing on other things (ie dating or having a family of my own) or when I am feeling dissatisfied with myself; that feeling can be consuming. So I get it’s really hard to feel and be grateful in the truest sense of the word. Doing a no buy or beauty budget isn’t going to fix that for me as I don’t have a shopping addiction but I really like the insight you have in your situation, and I really have watched you grow so much which has been great to see. Definitely going to try to practice gratefulness in my life more.

    I feel gratitude is like a muscle that needs to be worked. Writing a gratitude journal has helped me focus on my thankfulness for even the simplest things and in doing so, gratitude becomes more of a natural daily process. As with anything, the more focus we give things, the more they become apart of us.

    I did not watch the whole video yet, so I don't know if you are going to touch on this later on not. I'm currently at the 10 min mark where you are talking about how the shopping experience now is so different from the obsessive behaviour your were displaying in past years and I thought back to the video were you talked about buying that sweater from New Zealand and obsessively (at least it seemed that way to me) you checked every boutique you could find in the middle of the night. I am not trying to criticise here, simply to try to put in a "new perspective" (it's not new if you've already thought about it this way) the act of buying that sweater. Was that experience different from how you used to shop in the past? Again, I'm not trying to criticise, I'm genuinely interested. Regardless, your channel is an inspiration for me and I've watched your "how my no buy year changed my life" every day for a week in a row. I've already started a budget in August :) Happy holidays!

    • @courtneymcgrath1285
      @courtneymcgrath1285 4 года назад +9

      HLP talked about how it was. How she was in high spirits from the holiday, decided she wanted the thing and then had to spend time finding it and buying it. Last year, during her no buy year, she would talk about how she would agonize about a thing for days or weeks or months. I don't see this as obsessive. She decided she wanted it really fast, she was just determined to buy it. It's hard to describe and I get your point. For some reason I can feel the difference in how she talks about it, but I can't explain it. Its a queasy pit of the stomach versus pleased that you accomplished a task feeling. Or that's my interpretation :-)

    • @whitevine9544
      @whitevine9544 4 года назад +4

      The thing is the sweater was sold out at so many places and she did have it on her Christmas wishlist and when she realized that none of her family was going to be able to get it for her and realized that she really wanted it she tracked it down herself. It probably was a little obsessive (but maybe not for Hannah. She'll have to speak on it herself), but also if it is the one nicer beautiful thing to her why shouldn't she buy it as long as it is in her budget?

    I tried not to buy things in 2019, for 3 mos...I don’t know how you did it in 2018???
    There were items I told myself not to buy...and I did it anyway...I have a problem with shopping in general...clothes, makeup, planners, notepads, earrings (I don’t buy expensive things, I’m cheap)...
    I’m doing it again in 2020....I’m going to pick 3 things & do it for one month...
    I also am going to set goals to do things & set routines & i am doing a point system...if I get so many points, I will reward myself with certain things that I need/want...so I have to get things done & get a reward...
    Kind of working & getting paid with items that I want/need...
    To some it might be weird...but, it might help with my spending & also help with getting healthy, setting up routines, & getting rid of stuff in general...One of the things I’m striving for in 2020...

    I can relate to so many things you say! I am thinking about doing a low buy, as I know, I could not succeed at a no buy. I hope it will have similar effects or do you think only a no-buy can achieve those things? I have phases where i dont buy anything, but when i need something and i start looking, the cycle you describe, begins and leads to other beautiful things I discover and then want as well. :( idk what to do. maybe start with a no buy month?

    What really changed my shopping perspective was Ipsy plus. I just ended up with too much stuff I don't use. I stopped my subscription in October. I literally was burned out on random stuff. I gave myself a limit and I just stuck to that. I did great until black Friday... Oh boy. I'm doing my slow buy.
    In 2020 I'm going to try buying myself a gift card and that's my budget for the month. For me to just get what I want.

      Tracy Frederick I got the Ipsy Glam Bag as a Christmas gift last year and I feel the same way! It’s just too many things and while some stuff is fun to try, it’s too many things that I haven’t selected for myself. I found myself changing my preferences to lean more towards skincare by the end of the year just so I would receive samples that could be used up.

    I feel like when you started talking about the cycle of shopping at 22 something minutes you could have been describing me. 😭😱 Im still changing my behaviour, leaving shopping carts full of stuff without buying them left and right here... postponing för 24 or 72 hrs, thr delayed gratification really challenges that behaviour, but Im still browsing like crazy. just learning to abandon ship much sooner.

    I thank you Hannah that you invited us into your journey. I think that first year of No Buy was a decision and something that was very hard for you to do but you had us to help keep you accountable. If you had not had us, would you have been as reflective and gone as deep as you did? We love that you included us and we love you. It is hard when you are young to find your place between fantasy and reality. We all have those dreams of what we want to do when we "grow up". Your's was writing and creating "beautiful things" We all have the fantasy of how it will be when we finish college or get that job. We will be able to do this or that or buy this or that. We will be married and have someone who loves us, a house, a family of our own. We may want fame or having fulfillment in what we choose to do. But there are a lot of thirty year old women who reach about thirty three that it doesn't go the way we planned. No husband, we aren't doing the work we wanted to do, we do not have the financial security we thought we would. Many become disenchanted and feel like failures. When I reached that age and was not married, nor was I really independent like I wanted to be, it was really hard. The older you get and it still doesn't happen, you have to do a lot of self reflection. One thing I can say is that appreciating what you do have and not looking for something to happen in the future and being dissatisfied and frustrated with life is not a way to be. People often fill life with empty pleasures and things like shopping and spending money. You have realized these things early. You have worked out your relationship with shopping and with things. It is a struggle every day and many days we may fail, but one thing, we have to get right back up on that bike and keep going. Keep pursuing peace and satisfaction and knowing our priorities. Family and friends are the most important because they go with us through life. Things and possessions do not. Cherish each moment of life while you are young and enjoy the journey.

    Your musings are so intelligent and thought provoking I love to listen to you and thank you for sharing your wisdom with us. I think one of the things that keeps us constantly striving is that like you said we forget to be grateful and we are unaware sometimes that we are being told to always seek out the next thing. Somebody said comparison is the thief of joy and its so true. I have been doing this lately with makeup and its allowed me to be smart about my purchases and give myself a pep talk. I now need to do that in other areas like my spending in general but its grappling with mindsets, its being willing to be uncomfortable with myself or ourselves so we can grow. And our culture tells us to numb those feelings and to numb the intelligence that goes into not allowing ourselves to live out of a life full of instant gratification. It's hard work.

      Most of America is living paycheck to paycheck with little to no savings because of the economy, stagnant wages, and lack of affordable healthcare. You still deserve to get yourself something nice every now and then as long as your bills are covered. Life is already miserable and hard enough.

    • @ZijnShayatanica

      If she can pay her bills/afford food, afford to run her business, put money into savings, & stay out of debt EVEN WHILE spending $200 on beauty/homewares... Why shouldn't she?

    • @Creamy_Goodness
      @Creamy_Goodness 4 года назад +6

      $2400/year is a lot of money. "You still deserve to get yourself something nice every now and then - Life is hard enough" - sounds like the exact rhetoric at the core of empty consumerism, how people get into huge debt and so on.

      Christina living hand to mouth means you have hardly enough for food to survive. The fact that Hannah can spend money on luxuries such as skincare and make up demonstrates that she isn’t living hand to mouth.
