    Thank you Canon for keeping the "Orientation linked AF point" feature in this EOS R camera! I can't live without it on my 5Dmk3. And big thank you for introducing all the other great new features, like Eye Detection AF and Touch&Drag AF that seem much easier to use and select AF point, than it was with a joystick on 5Dmk3. Great job, Canon! I think I'm buying this new camera, but only as a second/supplementary back-up camera as it doesn't have dual cards slot, hense it is restricted to be used professionally in paid jobs, like weddings and so on.

      Hello Sergey, did you buy Eos R? I'm currently using 5d mark iii and seriously considering a switch to Eos R. what's your experience?

    • @sergeytsygankov
      @sergeytsygankov 2 года назад

      @@JIMPMedia Hi, I think you'd better consider EOS R6 than EOS R. R6 is newer and more advanced, thou of course more expensive. As for me, as strange as it may seem, I finally bought a new Canon 5D Mark IV, as it better suits my job tasks. Sure mirrorless systems are modern, easy to use, and so on, and but they have some downsides for me. My old 5D3 is a trustworthy workhorse which helps me make a living for the last 5 years, and I needed the same level of reliability with a new camera.
      I was on a fence choosing between R6 vs 5DiV, and when Canon recently announced that they will no longer produce any DSLRs, and concentrate on mirrorless cameras only, I understood that it's my last chance to have a new pro-level DSLR. 5D Mark IV (and 1DXiii) is the last Canon's DSLR, and while they are still available new, it's a must-buy. For example you can't buy a new 5D Mark III now anymore, only used. Same will be for 5DiV within next 3-5 years.
      So, I just I love my new 5D Mark IV, it's basically the same as good old trustworthy 5D3, but with a bunch of new awesome features.
      Still I think if you buy a EOS R6 you will be absolutely happy with it. Let me know after some time what decide.

    I also initially thought that continuous AF was a harmless "save a little time" kind of thing. However, I discovered that it breaks back-button focus. Normally, if you back-button focus, then let go of the button, focus is maintained and you can shoot the subject at any time. But with continuous AF selected, the camera will continuously re-focus, and you can no longer shoot the subject.
    FYI, my normal settings are to have Servo enabled, so normally, I would focus with back-button focus, let go, and shoot at any time. In addition, I could optionally press the BBF button again and keep it pressed for servo mode if the subject started to move. (This solves the need that "AI focus" used to address). But "continuous AF" is not possible with this kind of setup.

    Question I've had difficulty finding an answer to. If I'm wearing sunglasses, is the EVF going to appear black because of polarization? My point and shoots (all Canon, BTW) will black out in one orientation or the other, depending on model.

    • @CanonUSA
      @CanonUSA  4 года назад

      Hello Carl,
      You can view the EVF on the EOS R, while wearing polarizing sunglasses. You will be able to see the EVF display. The EVF is not affected by the polarization rather only by the darkness of the tint of your sunglasses. The EVF will not go black.
      The LCD on the top of the camera body is affected by polarized lenses. The top LCD may appear black at certain viewing angles.
      We hope this helps.

    I am surprised there is no way to lock magnify function in viewfinder. Taking the perfect shot is often interrupted when multiple shots are taken and reverted back to the non magnified view. Sometimes, with fast moving objects, subtle adjustment is necessary, and this reverting to non-magnified and needing to re-instate often results in missed opportunities. why not just a fixed magnify option with a button press, or even offered in menu diving?

    By "electronic viewfinder" I assume you mean the rear screen. All of Canon's recent DSLR's have the LiveView capability which flips the mirror up and lets you use the rear screen as a finder exactly as the mirrorless camera does. So what's the big deal with mirrorless? Canon's cameras have had that feature for years.
    However, it's a great way to get you spend $$$$ on a new set of lenses.

      Hi Amol! Both are actually great for bird photography. The choice may come down to whether you are looking to go mirrorless or with a digital SLR. I've got my camera today and i discovered that it has:
    No stabilization in camera stabilization. OK, so when using one of the 3 adapters to use your existing Canon glass, if the lens doesn’t have IS then you have zero access to IS. Compatibility factor just took a hit here.
    One SD card slot.
    No joy stick to set AF.
    No continuous shooting in silent at launch - however we’re told it will be addressed in future firmware update.
    You can shoot 8 FPS in one shot, the only issue is ….that is in one shot…in continuous IAF to 5 frames upto 47 raw files in a row.

I have played with the setting but its messy. It also feels choppy when using a flash. I got the camera as I was enticed by the silent shutter. Nothing worse than covering an event and the shutter is annoying the speaker. using the silent mode is fantastic but if there is a projector in the background (and at most events there is) or florescent lights you get horrible stripes across your images. No paper would take them. Such a pity, ruined the main reason I got the camera.

    • @katumus
      @katumus 5 лет назад

      1 Pixel is three dots. So 3.69 million dots is same as 1.2Mpix. That means, 1280 x 960.
      Now compare that to example 2.36 dots, that is 0.8 Mpix. Or 1024 x 768.
      Not a big difference really, but can be noticeable. Now, think in 5 years we are likely going to see a 2.1 Mpix. A full HD, or 6,3 million dots.

      In a DSLR camera, light coming in through the lens is reflected up through the viewfinder via a series of angled mirrors. When you look through the viewfinder of a DSLR camera, you're seeing exactly what the lens is seeing.
      In EOS M-series cameras and in the new EOS R, the light coming in through the lens is captured by the image sensor instead of a mirror. That image is then shown on the camera's LCD screen, eliminating the need for an optical viewfinder.
      We hope this explanation helps!

      It was the logical option to get the best image possible. Pixel binning would be terrible, Downscaling the entire sensor would result in terrible rolling shutter performance. Cropping in to a smaller group of pixels and downscaling that group of pixels would result in a balanced performance, less heat, and less strain allowing 42210bit out the hdmi.

Spent roughly a month researching before the purchase. In the end- just gotta get what you need. every camera had it's pros and cons with no apparent winner (taking image quality samples into account )
      what's it called now... demised returns? seemed like the m50 captured images compatible to the 5k cameras and spending that extra coin for the 5% extra increase in performance wasn't worth it for myself. but if you are not on a budget .... get a RED ^.^

    Useful, helpful information. I've been shooting with Canon since they released the 5DMk1, I bought the Mk2 and then again the Mk 3 however for about 5 or 6 years they've let me down. The 5DMk3 malfunctioned, Canon kept the camera for a month saying they were fixing it but eventually admitted they didn't do anything. I couldn't bring myself to buy the MK4 after how they treated me. Dynamic range was better on my iPhone 4s! No disrespect to Rudy Winston but this is why Canon is failing. They were arrogant and felt they didn't need to do anything. They lost the market because they rested on their laurels. They're stuffy older men who won't acknowledge or learn from their mistakes. The visuals of this video show how out of touch they are with modern photographers. They use guys in business shirts and 80's lighting. I just tested the EOS R in store, had the eye tracking on at 1/160 f4 ISO 2000 at 50mm and very few images had the eye in focus on a moving person walking towards the camera and the grain was too much. Fine when the person was still. Canon really is slipping into irrelevance. Sad they never listened to their customer base.

    • @TonghoPhotography
      @TonghoPhotography 6 лет назад

      Why do you need eye AF and silent shooting in continuous mode shot? You may say yes for your case but most people like myself can care less. I use continuous mode to shoot sports and Birds in flight (BIF) where I don't need either features. I only need them for portraits and in churches and concerts and I use single shot AF for that.

      Hien Tongho , I use the continuous low shooting mode mostly for weddings and portraits to capture the best expression. This is my way of doing it. In single shooting mode the image review displayed might get in the way and I have to refocus and every time between each shot.

    • @TonghoPhotography
      @TonghoPhotography 6 лет назад

      I know you do otherwise you wouldn't have mentioned this...I'm just thinking that Canon is targeting the majority and they will get sales. We are all different and have different needs I guess. For me, this isn't important but the EF lens compatibility and the ability to auto-focus at f/11 is huge for me, meaning I can use the 2X teleconverter with f/5.6 lenses. I'm sure the next mirrorless Canon makes will have all the stuff they are missing now.

    • @laurentl714
      @laurentl714 6 лет назад

      You are right, I share your point of view. I might just preorder it as I just learn that Canon will be updating it’s firmware to enable continuous shooting in silent shooting mode. Also, given that the quite recent 6D Mark II lost $700 in value in less than a year, going from $1,999 to $1,299 to you think there is a similar risk with this EOS R ? How would you explain such a big drop in value for the 6D Mark II?

    • @TonghoPhotography
      @TonghoPhotography 6 лет назад

      I think most Canon cameras (new condition) will drop in price after one year and more...That had happened with all of the models I have (5DIII, 5DSR, 7DII)...That's Canon's way of increasing sales by getting the people who want the camera but hesitate to buy for the full price to pull the triggers. I think the street price will drop below 2000 within 6 months unless there's a back-order situation. I think Sony does the same thing but not Nikon. I picked up the Sony A6500 for $1000 a year after, while the original list price was $1690.
