This is a ramble. I had so many thoughts swimming around my brain because my thyroid levels swung the other way and I'm currently suffering from hyperthyroidism which means EVERYTHING is in overdrive. Metabolism is on fire, sleep is elusive because brain and body want to do tae-bo, thoughts are moving like a vhs on fast-forward so I thought it was best to just have a sit down and see what thoughts come out. Kind of like free writing but with with a TSH of 0.15. Welcome to my horribly sleep deprived, moderately malnourished musings!
The song is Dichroic Mirror - Essence Immortal

@@SirenASMR_ I'm really sorry to hear about your struggles. It's hard enough balancing your physical and mental health when one thing has your hormones out of whack but when two things are tugging at those strings - I can imagine it being an absolute nightmare. So many people don't realize how much your hormones have to do with how you're feeling. When my TSH went from 2.2 to 6.1 from September to November and then tanked from 6.1 to 0.15 from November to December That kind of thing takes you on such a mind-melting roller coaster. I'm ready to do cartwheels down my hallway at 5:00 in the morning with sleep being the furthest thing from my mind. My metabolism is soaring and I have no appetite so I dropped 10 lb in a month. I wish there were a magic medication that could just settle all of us thyroid people down so we can live a comfortable existence.

Goth is the celebration of taboo and challenging the oppressing social norms. It followed the metal and punk genre of the 80s, which 80s Goth was the thing. But Goth was never the music genre and never will be. Fashion is not Goth at all. It was a trend that followed the music genre. Also, I hate to break it too that a lot who say they are aren't. It's not supposed to be being plastics. The new music that has become modern is no issue to being Goth either. Industrial Dance and in general EBM is as Goth as post punk and metal. People used to call Maralym Manson and Evanescence Goth in 2k. Those artists came out to say they never were. However, challenging the dress code, the super Christian oppressive culture challenging the oppressive social norms follow the actual Goth trend. The clothes and music are more of a symbol of it.
In terms, Goth can dress with no stereotypical goth look. It follows more a part of your being. It has always been "a celebration of taboo and challenging the oppressive social norms." You could say more or less. It's a standing out outsiders approach with morals against the norms of society. Ex. society wore color so goths wore black. The Adam's Family Approach. Jk. The societal outsiders.

It's definitely generational because us millennials and you Gen X Goths took the time to learn about the subculture. Whereas now you have social media channels that make it look like it's only visual. There's a lack of respect for the scene because people (usually outside of it) try to force it to fit when they hate the music and just like the fashion.
I always list recent Goth bands for those who are not in the scene or who may be new. It's a way to help bring them in. Lebanon Hanover, Selofan, Denuit, Secret Shame, Kaelan Mikla, Drab Majesty, Rose Garden Funeral Party, so many more!❤❤

I consider myself a goth since middle school though I never listened to the music much, except for the Cure. I loved and love many gothesque things, like the literature (Shelley, Stoker). I was a huge Anne Rice growing up. I was obsessed with Phantom of the Opera and wrote dark poetry. I only wanted to watch horror or read horror novels. Today, all of these interests are still intact in addition to the love for gothic decor and fashion. I'm one of those who I believe would love goth music if only I could find my kind. I would love some recommendations please

Well, given what you've told me thus far about you shows me that you have a penchant for the more atmospheric and dramatic. So to that I would recommend The more melancholy and the ethereal. Sometimes rather than a band I like to start people off with specific songs to gauge where their head is at. Check out a song by Faith and the Muse called shattered In aspect. Then try, Drab Majesty - foyer, Frozen Autumn - Onyria, paralyzed age - blood sucker, the mission - pale empress, switchblade symphony - clown and Lycia - A Failure. These are all very commonly known songs within the golf community but they're these are all very commonly known songs within the subculture, but they're also very different from one another.

Sorry in advance, I wrote a lot. But listening to others journeys can help find music
I had a hard time finding goth music too, and my gateway (everyones gateway is different) Evanescence. NOT a goth band, but they had some gothy, goth adjacent songs that opened my mind: Haunted, Understanding (all versions) Even in death, Field of innocence, Bleed, Give unto me, Farther Away, and Lies, which got me hunting for darker and heavier music. Mostly dark and goth(ish) soundtracks: Queen of the damned, The crow (has a song from the cure in it) and La terza madre. Eventually finding single tracks by accident online, Milagro by Anabantha, Spellbound by Souxie and the banshees.
Christian death - The loving face
      Switchblade symphony - Naked birthday
Paralyzed age - The grave shall be forever
Black tape for a blue girl - With my sorrows
The march violets - Snake dance
      Psyche - Goodbye horses
      Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's dead
Looking up dark films, goth dance, dark choreography/ies helped, and eventually I found Faith and the muse. My favorite albums are Evidence of heaven and Ankoku butoh. With The sisters of mercy: Floodland and Reflect on this. And by Requiem in white: of the want infinite.
Currently I'm checking out Leva, Twin Tribes, Tsaffire, Actors, Plastique noir, Vesturon Vulture, Death loves Veronica, Vandal Moon, Mareux, She wants revenge, Auger, and The faces of Sarah.
edit: and Echoberyl (sorry, I forgot one and it's a good one)

I am in my 50's and was part of that original era. Yes, we would play to much Joy Division and Bauhaus but we mixed in many other kinds of tunes. Thrash Metal, Doom, Shoegaze , even surfer music helped us all find that sound path . Don't gatekeep yourself!
Even now I find new bands and styles that draw me in. As an older geeky emo type I enjoy blackgaze, newer post punk and even some freeform or acid jazz.
What's most important is flow. Let that creative current guide you. Dont play with it to much or ask to many questions, be primal. If a door opens, and you can perceived something transformative, step inside. Remember, under that porcelain skin is a skeleton 😊

Growing up in the '80s (as in pre-internet Sub Culture days with only occasional videos on rotation on MTV, certain bands touring and only "fanzine style fan magazines"), it must've been unique to be an Early Goth. Interesting. Also over the last two years, as I've watched more & more Goth sub culture documentaries here on RUclips, I find the more "personal stories" fascinating. Yes the music & the fashion, but I just enjoyed seeing people, rather mainland European or my fellow North Americans, find others around them finding them fascinating or odd or cool in their own way. Or just unique.
I must say in the pre-internet generations, things certainly must've been harder though also fascinating from a different angle. Though alas I am glad that the late '90s "internet boom" happened though, as it ultimately brought many more people together & connected

Oh yes I remember the early CD (compact disc) days of started in collecting them more around 1997 when I was in Middle School. You also had to REALLY be into that band or that soundtrack because it always costs around $18 bucks or over. So not a lot but even still buying two albums in a row added up (plus I'm an American and we have our infamous sales tax that Australia & I believe European nations don't have to worry about). I'm also glad online shopping came into the fold as alas I was never too into goin' into shopping centers (malls). I also don't have the strange prejudice that some have for them but I'm honestly just not a sociable person.
And yes my main complaint about Western nations are among that: People constantly looking at their Smart Phones and also complaining that "no one is really socializing" when they, themselves, are not trying to start conversations. So yeah, like many elements of the so-called western world, I sometimes just plain scratch my head at it all.🤔

Being Honest, with yourself and what feels, is more important than anything else,,
" Goth" as many other subculture,, look and what's been inspired by, the Labels get, throw around, almost without investigation or study,
Example; Punk, Now bands get tagged Hardcore, which is wrong, Emo, was Emo, not bands tagged Emo, by misinformed hater's, Posers bands trying for the Taking Back "Thursday" sound, Actually Post Hardcore, getting called ... Of all things,, ScreamO,,
Which was we called Poser Scene kids who never went to shows, also driven by Hookup culture,, never a part of the Modern Hardcore ideal, Now bands like BOTCH, ORCHID, get this mislabeled term,
As Goth is.. somehow everything now, The Cure!?,, Yikes,, never goth,, Etc..
I find new music all the time,, Darkwave etc,,
Jay Retard, My Shadow,, on its own ,, has this Dark vibe and driven.. you could dance to it,, it can't be Goth or Dark whatever causes it's.. Hipster,, that's laughable..

Also, I tend to be very biased towards 80's, 90's, and post punk for the same reason. Not impressed with the new school. If the wrong DJs are spinning on an particular night, or the venue's dance floor is crap (or nonexistent), it's a no go. Also, bring a pair of sunglasses to events, and if the lighting is too bright or annoying, throw them on. If enough goths do this enough times, management eventually gets the hint.

My opinion, Labels suck in general, I refused to be shoved in a box and to be bound by the confines of someone elses definition, i refuse to be confined to the size of that box. Everyone should be free to grow and be what they want. I'm an Aaron , you be a you, and If people don't accept you because you are who you are and not what they expect you to be, well that's probably not someone who would be a good friend anyway.

For me, it was a combination of the literature and the music and the fashion and basically trying to combine all of those things together. I have some very embarrassing stories about being a teenager and actually thinking that I was a vampire which now I think it’s kind of stupid but it was fun when it lasted. It’s unfortunate that when I was getting into subculture and trying to do some research online, the first thing which came up was unfortunately the Sophie Lancaster murder, so I kind of got exposed to the hate that we get pretty early on. when I was 16, I was lucky enough, however to get a compilation CD which had come out in 2006 called The Goth anthology which some of it was a bit hit and miss, but a lot of the songs were Staples within the Goth club playlist.

I knit and crochet too and have been called old lady and not a true goth for doing this hobby. It is way too easy to get stuck in gatekeeping in fear of being the outcast of the community. Thank you! Honestly, when it comes to the whole gatekeeping thing, I feel comfortable saying that it very, VERY rarely comes from true goths. It comes from people who aren't actually involved. Literally every single person who called me a 'fake goth' weren't goth. Some were straight up normies who saw that I wasn't hypersexual with a choke based OF and didn't listen to Lil peep and others were the 'I'm a goth because goth is whatever you make it' people who wouldn't know a goth band if one came up and farted in their face. When it comes to people in the subculture, they're here because they love it and without people, it dies. Gatekeeping benefits no one.

Once again, your experience you shared feels relatable to me, on old baby bat, as I consider myself. There are many who get into Goth on the gate of the esthetics, of fashion. I did and I tried on the music without liking almost anything from it, at first. But heck, I decided to listen to it, not the things I remotely liked, but also some of the things I did not. I let them flow and get to me. And some did. So, getting into Goth changed my relationship to music in general, in a way. So, for some, making yourself enjoy Goth music, if you want, is possible, if you are motivated enough, if you are open-minded enough and if you are relaxed enough doing it. This may sound weird, but it is my real life experience. It sounds like forcing yourself in a relaxed way, paradoxically. I do still listen to other genre, I realized that, if I stick too much into Goth music, or a certain section of Goth music, I kind of ”loose the vibe” but, if I listened to various genre, I can return to Goth more easily. And, in a way, this is true regarding the rest of the music I enjoy. By the way, the music you use in the background of your videos made me discover some artists I really enjoyed. In the first months of Goth music, I was pretty greedy, trying out different artists, lots of them, like a hungry stray dog who has not tasted a decent piece of meat in a week. Now, I tend to be a lot chill about it, as I can not try on every Goth artist I find out about online, and stick to certain artists and albums for a longer time. And indeed, guitar heavy Gothic rock can be a good background for writing horror.

I’m so glad I figured out my gender and socially transitioned… I want to say before all this, but really it’s during all this, because it taught me a lot. It taught me to ignore other people’s opinions and listen to my intuition, what felt right. It taught me that boxing yourself in with labels is not always helpful. It’s better to forget about labels and figure out who you are, what you feel, what makes you happy, what do you want your life to be like, stuff like that, and then after you feel like you’ve figured that out is when you could think about labels (or not). Never let a label limit who you are, never try to mold yourself to fit your labels, never feel like you can’t do something because you have to apply a certain label to yourself/fit a certain label first. Like who cares if you are goth or not, that’s not what’s important. The question is what music do you like, what fashion and aesthetics do you like, what kind of people do you vibe with, what kind of activities do you like? Just do whatever you want, and ignore the labels. At some point you might or might not realize “oh shit I’m goth”, after having been into goth music / goth stuff in general for a while already. But don’t put the label first. The label is unimportant.
I feel like with the internet we think we should neatly categorize ourselves, we need to put a hashtag to ourselves, need to categorize ourselves into an existing “type” of person or rather consumer. And that’s bullshit. Be unlableable, be a person not a brand. You don’t have to fit a mold, you can be many things at the same time, you don’t have to fit your entire life and being into an aesthetic, that’s impossible and you’ll only hurt yourself in the process if you try to make yourself fit. No one is doing gothy stuff 24/7. In fact trying to limit yourself like that kills creativity and joy.
In conclusion, acab includes the genre police.

goth scene was the reason I was reading Rimbaud at 15 X) , I think this is one of the things the subculture was a good influence on me I read a lot of good stuff very early on, and many still hold up as references for me today. We are of similar age and is funny for me to see how some things were universal. Except the identity stuff, it was super uncool in Portugual as a ''goth'' to label your self as such, like labeling yourself was poser and ''real goths'' were above labels when it comes to people and use labels just for music or art.

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  8 месяцев назад +3

Here in the '80s and early '90s, labeling yourself as a goth was much the same as your experience in Portugal. I think as time went on, with younger kids in their very early teens getting involved, We were so enthusiastic to find something so vast beyond the ubiquitous societal norm constantly being shoved in her face. It was like discovering this new amazing thing that was as you said, so influential. We got a bit hyperactive about it and definitely through that word goth around whenever we could because we felt so proud and privileged to a found such a thing. Again, like you said it exposes you to so much more. Normal 15-year-olds aren't reading the literature that you were but the subculture and the music kind of - not quite enforces but inspires more creative thinking. Poetry, literature, culture that you didn't really see among freshmans in high school.

@@angelabenedict ah I understand better now what you mean, taking in consideration a more concrete scenario of teenagers fresh into the scene, it was like that aswell. And btw I was also in a couple fetish parties while underage unfortunetly, lol, and I knew the organizers and they knew I was underage, when I think about it from this perspective I'm like 'wtf'' and also shows how times have changed and things that were considered ''normal'' are now more reflected upon.
Anyway that inspiration you refer is what made it a great home / escape, and the influence it brought and still brings it's very present in my life. I remember also the fact that queerness was not only accepted it was very open in the scene, in a time when a gay couple / lesbian couple simply holding hands on the street was a big nono and could put you in serious danger (it still can happen today, but far less than 23 years ago), people were kissing and making out freely at the goth club. A group of us used to go to the local gay club after the goth club, just because it was open a couple of hours longer than the goth. Anyway even if we wanted to go anywhere else we would not be allowed in because of how we looked, gay clubs were liberal about dress codes. There was some kind of mutual understanding.

TDLR: Labels work best for products and aesthetics, not people. People will always be more than labels.
The identity question is always an interesting one to me. I was just thinking about it the other day, and considered posting some thoughts on r/goth. Lately I've been taking the view that goth works well as an interest, but can be limiting if one makes it their whole personality. I'm now considering that Goth is better as a label for products like the music, fashion, and decor we like, rather than people.
Today we have so much selection to choose from, there can then be a question about "How much do I have to like a thing?" or "What amount of time must be invested for me to be 'worthy' of the title?" Those can be valid questions, though they have the power to shoehorn and direct us into a narrow way of thinking. Thinking that we have to be something, rather than simply allowed to enjoy something.

But in reality, I’m ALL of those things, because I’m a person and not a caricature.

I felt exactly like this when I was in college. Apart from listening the music, I felt like I needed to prove myself by reading every gothic/dark novel possible (i.e. Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, Anne Rice, etc) and write poems or otherwise I would feel like a fake goth. Now that I am 33, I think how silly I was and laugh about it.

This is slightly connected but mostly unrelated, but have you heard of the band "The Dark Theatre"? because I found an old talk show clip which had the leading member of the band on - sadly only 3 of their songs are available on youtube, but hard to find.
I ended up ordering a CD of theirs because there's just no other way to access their songs - Do you know if they were popular or have any information about them?
Me and my friends were able to make digital copies of the album's songs and are looking into wats of sharing it with others, since its a shame that there's just no way to listen to them otherwise

For me goth was more literary (books, comics and poetry). I had some goth music but a lot of it was mixed in with grunge. I remember this girl telling me I wasn't gothic enough because I didn't look like an extra from the Crow. My makeup was softer, and she was judging primarily on fashion. Books and music really kept me alive back then, when I could either not afford the fashion or got a lot of clap back from family that were hysterical during the satanic panic.

@Anonymous-wb3nz That's true, but think of the literature and poetry that inspired those bands. Robert Smith was very taken with Kafka, Siouxie and Smith were both fans of Poe and Baudelaire. Music encompasses Goth, but Goth has inspiration in Gothic literature.

I don’t typically dress like one, I usually wear band t-shirts and shorts, and that’s okay. I’m comfortable with myself (to an extent) I do have some “goth” outfits, but like a meme said: only goth 10% of the time, the other 90% we’re in our NMBC pjs rummaging through our fridge looking for snacks at 3 am lol

I was probably a bit of a late-bloomer goth. I grew up on 80's Metal and 90's Alternative while being in an isolated country town with only a few goths around. I liked some songs from Marilyn Manson but he just didn't resonate with me because he came off as too angsty, and slow tempo melodic goth music was nice as background music but was too calm for my liking. However, I was unique, had my hair in huge spikes over my eyes, and was always standing out and trying to find my own style. My look was kind of a mix of skater, punk and goth, so I was generally told that I did not fit as a goth even though I loved dark themes and the macabre. It wasn't until after highschool that I finally discovered underground industrial music and I finally understood that I just had different tastes than other goths, but was still very much gothic. And I think because it's so rooted in my expression of individuality that it has literally always stuck with me even into adulthood. With or without the goth movement, I feel I'd still be expressing myself in similar ways with fashion aswell as being dark and weird, and I think that most of us that are truly attached to dark music and dark themes are the same way.

There are quite a few legendary bands from the 80s that I'm not a fan of. Including The Cure, Joy Division, Alien Sex Fiend, Christian Death, Depeche Mode (not strictly goth but lots of goths love them). But I like many others. And I'm way more into 90s and 00s goth music than 80s goth, and I always joke about goth inquisition coming for me for that 😁 But goth music is so diverse, and there is so much more beyond the "staple bands" - if you don't like those, look for others, maybe those you heard just didn't have the "right" vibe for you.
I guess the reason people can struggle with all this is precisely this diversity of goth music. Metal is metal, even with all the incredibly different genres and styles it's still metal, easily recognizable. The borders of goth can be more confusing for people because there are guitar based genres, synth based genres, some things are closer to punk, some to synthpop or neoclassical even, that can be very confusing for the newcomers. And add to that all the different ways one can express themself in terms of goth fashion... gets even more confusing I guess. But there's no need to overcomplicate it all. Love what you love, and if it's goth music - congrats, you're goth, whether or not you look the part. Most of the people I know in real life who love goth music and can engage in interesting conversations about it don't look like goths at all - I'm pretty much the only one "visibly goth" among them, so what? Take it easier. We're all here for the music, first and foremost.

When I was teen in early 2000-2010s goth was smth like weird to me, guys who hang out on cemetery and listen to Lacrimosa. Yes, I was interested in all those darkly inclined literature and macabre, made makeup and wear dark clothing, all was goth, but I've never thought that I'm goth, alternative kid - yep. Poor kid I was. Because when I grew up and had more information and found your channel I found out that actually I listened and listen to goth bands, that I am already into goth subculture and that isn't smth new. Kinda wow feeling)))
I agree with all those "box" thing. Why you have to put a label on yourself and have those strict measurements? I don't feel it right, you just love the music and everything comes naturally with it. I'm knitting carrot-orange scarf while listening to that video and I don't feel less goth while not wearing only black and without makeup. Because that doesn't define who I feel myself.

    Music is Everything!
My wife and I always dress dark, but not Edwardian or Victorian. Patchouli I've always associated with Hippies.
You can have your calligraphy. I just bought a couple of antique typewriters from back when they were all black.
Pagans don't proselytize. As my wife said, "I celebrate anyone's religion."
You be you. Don't be/do anything not you.
I've never considered myself to be goth, but I never considered it something to strive for either.
Gee, your description of the '90s sounds a lot like how I remember the '60s.

Beyond enjoying the music or otherwise participating in the music base of the subculture, I would go a step further and say one would also need to/want to accept the goth label for themselves. By not accepting that label, you are saying you like those gothy things, but it is not really how you want to define yourself.

I felt dejected a lot because goths have (for lack of a better word) bullied me cause they didn't like my eye make up. Mostly guys telling me I looked like i got punched in the face and it was only cause it wasn't stereotypical goth make up. My first goth friend was very emotionally abusive...as in he was an asshole to me. He agreed with them and for some dumb reason I didn't stop being friends with him until after he (knowing I had a boyfriend) kept flirting with me and eventually sent me an inappropriate picture. I just dealt with it I guess cause I live in a small town and wanted to be a part of the scene in some way even if it was online. I don't have to prove anything to anyone anyways cause though i started looking different on the outside I was into the music and subculture for years before that. I dabbled in the fashion, but yeah I wasn't sure until about a year ago that this was me. And yeah it was cause of all this overcomplication and trying to live to some rigid expectation.

I have been interested in the goth scene since either the late 80's or early 90's or both. I liked goths cool looking I guess is the word. I guess I thought then being a guy especially in my 20's that even though I was liking the goth scene and loved everything about how they dressed. Loved goth women how they dressed and still do. Really cool. I didn't think I quite fit in.
I listen to metal music mostly from 80's metal to black metal. As well as other music types. Years later while I still think I don't quite fit in I got the concept that none of that matters. I have no idea why. 1 I may figure out at some point. But I still love the goth scene. And I like watching your videos. Really good and really cool. 👍👍
