One thing I liked about this episode was how they showed Joel's limits in terms of physicality. It does show his age, he's not young with boundless energy. You see how the life he's had to live has taken it's toll on his body.

I think (at least to me) it really helps connect it to what I feel TLOU2 is all about, and what I remember Julien talking about when he played it. Throughout TLOU, we see the sheer amount of damage that Ellie and Joel do to other people and arguably the point of the second game is to empathise with the other people who are just trying to survive. Just from that moment alone it felt like it connected to the overarching theme of the second game and turned the “enemy” into just another person trying to survive the apocalypse

What I found really sweet about Joel teaching Ellie gun safety (besides him taking the time to apologise) was how he playfully tried to pull the gun away from her, it felt like such a dad thing.
Also I noticed with the character Kathleen (the lady who shot the dude) was that she seemed to have the motivation Tess had in early development of the game. Originally she was supposed to be the main villain, pursuing Joel throughout the journey in order to avenge her brother who he killed. I just thought that was pretty neat.

  • @pohia
    @pohia Год назад +260

i love the casting choice for kathleen. the way melanie delivers her lines (“find who did this. find every collaborator, and kill them all.”) is so perfect because her voice is very sweet and the actual words she’s saying are so inconsistent with that. even though they’re setting her up to be a main antagonist, you get the sense that she was just a normal person before the outbreak, and now she’s been forced (by the world) into a role she really wasn’t meant for. the details in this show are incredible and i could spend hours dissecting each little thing.

I noticed some parallels to the interactions between Joel and Sarah, and Joel and Ellie. In the first episode, Sarah and Joel were joking around, and when they were going to watch something together, Joel asks Sarah if she's going to fall asleep. She responds saying she wouldn't because it was too riveting, and then in the nex† cut, she was asleep. This episode with Ellie and Joel joking around, and her falling asleep after refusing to, was probably more comforting and endearing to Joel because of his familiarity to these interactions.

This was like the first gameplay-heavy episode of the show I think, and they did a really good job of it. I was so scared that the game wouldn’t be able to translate the more gameplay heavy scenes like this one to the screen, but (of course) they are doing it so effortlessly. Learning more about the people in the city which in the game are really just obstacles. Taking the gameplay mechanic of Ellie being added as a tool to rely on for the player and turning it into the traumatic scene with the kid. Introducing bloaters and bigger enemies into the story without relying on the video game-specific aspects to make it unsettling. They are just doing so well! This was the first episode that really felt like the game as a Game to me. Excited to see where that leads (not excited to cry next episode tho)

I’m so mad I didn’t get a Twitch notification yesterday and missed the live discussion but glad the turn around for the RUclips video is so quick, so thank you Fluck for your amazing work.
I loved this episode so much. I hate this idea that episodes that have more set up than payoff are just “filler” episodes. The payoff episodes don’t have the same impact without the build up in the set up episodes and the build up episodes are typically where we get the best character interactions that I love. This will probably be the episode I rewatch the most for that reason.
I love the joke books addition in the show because in the game it’s this small thing that is meant as a reward for people who take their time and can be easily missed, but in the show it’s given more weight and used as a representation of their walls starting to come down. The truck scene was perfect. It’s my favorite part of the game and even though it’s near word for word from the game I feel like it still hits different with the added context of Ellie’s backstory and sexuality.
The NPC behavior guy was so true. He was so dumb to just check up on his buddy out in the open like that. He was lucky Joel was also moving back cause if he wasn’t, Joel woulda just shot him too. If you’re the only one who is ambulatory, always make sure the threat is neutralized before administering aid so that you don’t get shot yourself cause you can’t take care of others if you don’t take care of yourself first. At least Joel is shown to be competent and provided cover fire for when Ellie moved.
The camping scene was weirdly nostalgic to me. It made me remember some of the good moments in a really bad part of my life (that has nothing to do with the show it’s just how I feel).
I noticed Joel’s dad noises too! I love how much they’re emphasizing Joel’s age because, except for the winter sequences in the game, Joel is just this badass dude jumping off high places and beating up people bare handed with no consequences to his fists. In the show you see more of the wear and tear on his body like him and Tess complaining about their knees, him still having bruised and cut up knuckles from episode 1, him struggling to climb the stairs. It’s just so much more realistic than wrapping an alcohol soaked cloth around your forearm and being a-ok.
Why why why did they make Sam so much younger!?!? He was still a 13 year old kid in the game, but he was played by Nadji Jeter who at the time was a 16 year old so he felt slightly older and was characterized as being more world weary and having to grow up too fast for his age. While Sam’s new actor, Keivonn Woodard, is only 10 and they’ve characterized him with way more innocence so far! I’m terrified and so full of dread to see what happens on Friday.

With only 9 episodes in the series, it makes me nervous how they are gonna fit everything else in, especially if there is a whole episode dedicated to the Ellie and Riley story. Idk, i'm worried the end may be rushed or a lot cut out. I trust them! but just stressed lmao. The guy Ellie shot didn't realize that Joel had a kid with him, I believe he wouldn't have attacked Joel. He said they were done fighting but he was also apologizing and saying he didn't know. Devastating scene altogether. Also this is more for next episode, but I am so excited to see deaf representation with Sam! They never show people who are deaf or blind in these worlds so it's just really cool to see. and also about sam, he truly seems so so young. I really enjoy watching you, and really love the attention that you put in the sliders, saying that :( please be more cautious, I played the game along time ago and don't remember some parts and you kinda spoils with the next episode, hinting that something bad its gonna happen to sam and/or Henry. I hope don't take it bad, greetings from México.

I haven't played the game, so question: why are the woods safe? The infected are fungus based! They love the woods!
And why do they decide to drive through the city? It's not safe from people or infected, apparently!?
And gun question, when Ellie assumed aimed so low at Brian, couldn't it have hit Joel too?

I actually really dislike how they humanize the villains in the show (both FEDRA and the hunters). I think it’s kinda cliche now to make villains be well-rounded lmao. I like in the game how it focuses on how humans can be vile and evil, including the moments w Joel talking about his past. It’s also just different bc again, I feel like everyone wants to humanize villains now to appear like they’re making a statement about humanity

i feel like killing the infected has the same vibe (to me, anyways) as putting down a pet, solely in the sense that it's essentially a final mercy, "putting them out of their misery" as some grimly like to put it. whereas Brian was just a dude, and yes he was just trying to kill Joel moments prior, but he really is just a guy with his own life and his own family. in apocalypse media, "shoot first, ask questions later" is a common theme because you don't know who's friend or foe and as was explained in episode 3, real people can be vastly more evil than infected. it was a really good juxtaposition between Ellie's merciless killing of the infected, vs her hesitance to kill Brian. it also juxtaposes her humanity and her "innocence" still being a child, with Joel's jaded and passive attitude toward killing. Ellie is hesitant because she's yet to be exposed to as many evils as Joel. Joel lost that hesitance long ago because he's seen too much. it's just really well executed in how it's shown. very good "show, don't tell" moment fr
