I mean you say that but that felt like the least Joel and Ellie moment ever lol in part 2 maybe but not at this point.
I do love them as Joel and Ellie. But they are definitely their own versions. I feel like they're taking some emotional shortcuts due to the length of the series, and losing almost an entire episode to Bill and Frank's story. Which was great, but I kind of feared this would happen. T just feels too quick for such a scene like this. And also unfortunately I don't think they've shown off how capable Joel is physically. The pilot was kind of more of an unhinged PTSD moment, on 2 he's getting owned by the Clickers (rightfully so but still), and here he gets choked out pretty easily. I've seen casual fans say that they haven't felt like Joel is like they haven't seen what the bjg deal about Joel is in terms of his fighting ability, and they're right.
I love the show still because they're focusing on the story and emotional journey for the characters above all, but I think they are neglecting the action-y side a wee bit too much. Joel needs to feel like a force to be reckoned with. Taking out two guys with a rifle and then getting dominated physically by the third like immediately was a bit disappointing.

That was never said in the game. Her name wasn't mentioned after we left her. We didn't even know how long they've known each other or where they met. It's magical that we get to find out. We don't just leave her behind. Her promise, and her impact lives.

I feel like a lesser show would've tried to show us how horrible it is by focusing on Joel driving the knife in and the camera zooming in to show the man choking his last few breaths away, but it hits so much harder when you're just focusing on Ellie's reaction to the sound from the other room. It's emphasizing the emotional brutality instead of just the physical brutality, and it works so well.

Absolutely agree. The show has done a superb job at humanizing the characters. The way Bryan is handled makes Joel's admission to Ellie that he has been on "both sides" even more impactful. It brings into focus that in this post-apocalyptic world, there is no clear line between good and evil when it comes to the human characters. There are just people. They are doing what they have to to survive. If their actions bring them into conflict with our own, that's what makes them "bad". It's relative. And it's uncomfortable, because it forces us to think, what would I do in that situation? No doubt I, too, wouldn't be able to maintain my moral high ground. I would do what it took to survive.

Ellie finally getting Joel to laugh was a nice moment, and Joel showing Ellie how to properly hold her gun was also a good bonding experience. It really showed them slowly growing closer. I kinda questioned why Joel would even try to drive through the city since he knows how bad cities can get, but I felt like his thought process might've been a little compromised, because he was up all night standing guard, so that was a quick choice he made out of impatience. RIP to Bill's truck. Made it 20 years into the apocalypse, and once Joel gets it, doesn't last 2 days.
Also, the second that guy said a doctor wouldn't help, I knew she was gonna go back and kill that doctor, which was a shame. That was an intense decision to get rid of the only doctor for her colony that we know of.

He doesn't know if Tommy is safe, or even alive, and he's been looking out for his little brother all his life, and, as Craig pointed out, he self-identifies as a protector. You see in the 1st ep that hes resolved Tommy's problems many times before. I think he took that chance to go around through the city out of concern for the only family he has left. Ellie changes that dynamic at the end of the ep, but, in that moment, he prioritized Tommy over Ellie.
It's, at least, a plausible interpretation why he endangered himself and Ellie like that.

The game's story (and I'm guessing Neil) is just more cynical than the show's story (and I'm guessing Craig).
Joel doesn't evolve into a loving father figure for Ellie in the game. He slips into his grief over Sarah's death. He hates Ellie having saved him, because he wants Ellie to be Sarah (not literally--he wants be a father guarding the innocence of a daughter again). And his daughter knowing how to murder people upsets him.
That's a little ambiguous in Part 1. But I think it becomes clear in part 2 that Joel shrank more than he grew during the first game.

@@IncredibleGoliath that was amazingly put 👍🏻👍🏻 the main theme of the game isn’t shooting infected. It’s exploring human relationships after a huge traumatic event. How can a relationship with someone else change a person who’s experienced a massive amount of grief? How can a traumatic event be overcome with a relationship? How love and closeness can still persevere during the end of the world. That’s why the third episode was so amazing.

@The Last Mikester I feel they both play their parts very well and do have good chemistry, but I just can't see how anyone could say 'some of the most authentic and emotional dialogue...I've ever seen' at this early stage. Maybe you need to come at it having played the game but I genuinely feel like the story would've had to start with these two together to get anywhere near matching that profound statement only 4 episodes in. It feels to me like they've barely been together 5 minutes - with most of the story so far involving many other characters coming and going and subplots taking place. Am I missing something? Are they supposed to have been on the road for weeks/months or something? As I feel like I'm nowhere near yet truly caring for these characters when we don't know enough about them yet or have experienced enough of their plight and journey together. Walking Dead took many series for people to truly invest in the characters and their world, whereas 4 episodes in...(this one the first really of just the two of them) Maybe if I had played the game I would feel different but all feels a little rushed so far for me

    • @thelastmikester

@@DilbertWhitehead I think on some level there is merit to having already played the game as I have, as you get attached then, and the game has alot more time to do stuff, all the little moments that can be missed in the show. However, you don't need multiple seasons of a show to start caring about the characters lol, I think it says alot when a show can get you invested with only a few episodes. If it doesn't do that for you, then fair enough, maybe play the game and come back or wait till it's all out and judge against the first season of the Walking Dead, and see where you're at. I have seen alot of people who never played the game comment specifically about how invested they are so far, in both the characters and the world. By authentic and emotional dialogue, I'm referring to alot of the scenes between Joel and Ellie, but particularly the ending where they start laughing, in such a brutal world, you just don't hear laughter really, and who knows how long it's been since Joel has laughed, in my opinion it was a special moment that feels genuine, and not rushed at all, I think this moment has had some buildup, as so far, Joel and Ellie have been mostly exchanging insults and sarcastic remarks, and now they are laughing and enjoying something (a joke) together, and in that moment, the awkward tension and perhaps even animosity, is gone. It'll probably come back, and soon, but for now they just get to feel at least little happy. It shows a bond between two people who are starting to care about one another, not to mention the gun scene where Joel apologizes to Ellie because she had to shoot the guy, and he kinda awkwardly stumbles around sentences trying to make sure she's okay, it shows vulnerability and an effort at connecting with the other person, for both of them. And yeah, I don't think we are at the point yet where we look back and say wow what a journey, but that's kinda the point seeing as we aren't even halfway yet, so I guess we'll see how people feel at the end

It's about pacing too, technically we are halfway into the season which would roughly be equal to 7 to 8 hours into the game! That's the magic of the games btw, the level design, difficulty, etc. make you feel like you have been through a lot together, plus some NPC dialogues to add details over a long course of time. Something like that cannot directly be translated into a tv show because it would be boring. However, there are time skips in tv shows. Like it makes sense that it's been a long time since Tess's death, hours worth of hike till Bill and Frank's, and then days' worth of driving together that is not really shown on the screen! So though it may seem like it's quick, it's not, there are definitely offscreen interactions and growth!

I'm amazed at how often Neil remembers to give context for people who haven't played the game. As a game developer, the mechanics of the game are even more old hat to him than they should be to Craig Mazin and Troy Baker, yet he's the one who remembers to clarify the things that people who only watched the show might be confused by

I thought the episode was good, but they could have at least give it 15 more minutes, showing a little more action. That ambush scene from the game, was one of the most iconic scenes from The Last Of Us. It was a little slow in places. And yea that new Kathrine lady does remind me of school teacher, or nurse.
But I still like how they humanize the enemies, and that is way more realistic than the first game. And in the game you were facing raider after raider without a leader! And you mean to tell me that one dude from Wyoming got an Army of raiders in Kansas as well? Yea that was not realistic for the games, so humanizing enemies is a great idea.

3 things (and I don’t know if they read these comments but probably not)
    1) my head canon for what happened between Ellie and Riley is that JUST LIKE THE EMT said in her recording, Ellie LEFT BEHIND Riley (but unlike the EMT never came back). Couldn’t bring herself to shoot her. Which hits twice as hard when you know her biggest fear is being left and yet she did it to her friend. This is backed up by the second game where she says the first person she killed (non-infected) was that dude. Meaning either Riley was already infected or she left her while she was turning and ran from her.
    2) Bryan (can NEVER trust Bryan’s with Ys) struck me as somebody with crocodile tears. I didn’t believe for a second he would let us go or that he was sorry for trying to rob from us or that he thought we “were good”. He was selfishly trying to get his way out of it. Which does 2 things: for the inexperienced (Ellie/new watchers) you think “wow…he’s human” for Joel (people who played) “wow…look at this wolf in sheep’s clothes. Look at this MONSTER”. I thought he was less human because of what he said because he’s stealing what probably dozens of others said to HIM hoping that enough time passes where his buddy can shoot Joel in the back. I saw it as a foil to this scene 20:19 later on in the episode, with her saying all the same things I imagine Joel was thinking.
    3) I always assume when Joel yelled at Ellie in the game it wasn’t insensitive but the opposite. He was trying to shock her out of the spiral she was slipping in and into anger. When things calmed down he did apologize and rather well I might add

Kathleen being the leader doesn't make any sence unless she was the strategic genius behind taking down FEDRA. She doesn't have the characteristics of a boss lady like Marlene, she's more like a manager who took the job for good pay. I hope they have a good explanation for why everyone respects her.

It's kind of funny and ironic how in the woods they were safe but joel felt the need to stand guard. However in the building they were in danger yet he could fall asleep. Thinking about it actually makes sense and I assume most of us would feel more vulnerable in the woods the same way. If you think a little harder though one could argue that being surrounded by doors and walls makes you less susceptible to hearing movement approaching. I understand that is why he scattered the glass but it didn't work out. In the woods you see everything around you and hear every little twig break not to mention in the middle of nowhere so why don't we feel safe. I guess its just the paranoia of being out in the open.

The good: Joel and Ellie keep bonding in believable and charming ways.
The bad: The hunters aren’t scary. A bit of thing for Druckmann but you don’t need to humanize every villain. Here it takes away from the fear factor. They were the survival of the fittest types in the game. In the tv show we get a sobbing kid and a middle aged lady with kindergarten teacher vibes. The original Tommy plays the gruff military guy, he’s solid at least.

Yeah I was pretty disappointed with the ambush scene. It’s a really memorable encounter in the game and I don’t think it was done well here at all. I’m not expecting to see Joel beast 10 dudes like he would in the game but when you compare it to the outbreak in Ep 1 and the clicker encounter in Ep 2, which felt like intense fights for survival, the firefight here felt really flat.
Still, it’s the first time I’ve felt disappointed by something in the series so far so not the end of the world.

The saving of Joel so early on really works. Makes me wonder now more than ever if Joel wanted to die. Let go. It's too much for him to blow it again. Sarah. Tess... He wants to go before getting attached. Joel could've taken Bryan. But he's too scared of facing down his mistakes. He wants to let go. But once Ellie fires he falls for her. "Shes just like me." Boom now he's invested. How absolutely well done. I thought the show would pale in comparison. Its much richer and dense than the game!! Great stuff y'all. Please just do Pedro some justice come pt 2 😁

I am soooo happy!!!! This episode, the whole season!! So far Omg!!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I'm so glad this worked the way that it did to reach Craig and that the union of Creig, Neil and HBO its pure *chefs kiss*
We got the puns, we got the magazine, we got the character growth, and even tho we changed cities the whole sets look perfect as the game. The addition of the character of Kathleen is soo good. This was such an amazing episode. Each week it's a win!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️ Thank you!!!
The puns had me dying I loved when Joel couldn't hold it in ugh so so so good!!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️😭 I love this story so much and seeing portrayed in such a beautiful way on a TV series medium!!!! ❤️😭 My heart is so full. Also I'm afraid of Craig bc he's done so good with this season (I'm sure the rest will be as good) so I'm already afraid for s2! 🤣😭❤️This is going to be AWESOME! 👏🏽 THANK YOU once more!!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
