  • Host Troy Baker and Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann unpack the episode in which Troy has an on-screen role. They break down the character of David and how this narcissistic predator tries to manipulate Ellie. They discuss one of the darkest moments of the show so far, and Neil says why it was so important to a subvert typical narrative. HBO’s The Last of Us podcast is produced by HBO and Pineapple Street Studios.

    I understand people wanting to see Joel pull Ellie away from David like in the game, but I think what they changed to in the show is more heartbreaking. To me, the scariest moment right after experiencing trauma is right after it happens, when you're alone and with your thoughts. When you're simultaneously trying to rationalize what just happened but your body is panicking. Ellie was about to trek back to the house, alone. Then Joel found her just in time to pull her back to reality and give her comfort.

    • @eliteteamkiller319
      @eliteteamkiller319 Год назад +18

      There's also the logical reasons, which were mentioned in this podcast. My only complaint is she probably chopped him a few too many times. But man, they NAILED this sequence from the game and made it so much better. EDITED TO ADD: But you're 100% right. Having Joel pull her off is interrupting her in the wild animal phase. Having her have to walk out alone and dazed amplifies the trauma, and makes her need for Joel's comforting arms so much more pressing.

      I liked that they left ellie to snap out of that rage herself. And then brought Joel in to meet her after the adrenaline left and when she was terrified. I think it showed Ellie's strength to pull herself out of that rage in that moment.,, And if the doors were locked, Joel wouldnt have gotten in. But this version of the Joel meeting Ellie outside of the steakhouse, might flow better with how Ellie deals with events of TLOU part 2. It would have worked either way, but i liked this better in this media i think.

Hearing your voice was a great reminder of Joel but that subtle acting of yours, your eyes, the exhaustion, the uncertainty. You stole your scenes, that's for sure. It's actually sort of unreal. Sincerely thank you to everyone who worked on this episode for portraying such an accurate depiction of SA and abuse. I keep asking myself why I've been so shaken by this episode and I think it's this: the fear, anger, and tenseness that we, as the audience, feel, as well as see Ellie feel, is exactly what SA feels like. The overall situation is obviously dramatized in the show because it's life or death, but that is what it feels like in the moment and continues to feel like after. And it is so healing to watch Joel comfort her so sincerely and lovingly even though he doesn't know what's going on. It's all I wanted when I was young and going through that, so thank you so much to Bella and Pedro for being such incredible performers, as well as everyone on the episode.

    I was most excited for this episode because it’s my favorite part in the entire game. I was blown away by this episode but the moment that stuck with me so much is when Ellie killed David. It was much more obvious what he was trying to do (some people missed the subtext in the game) and it was also just a lot more terrifying. Bella’s performance was soul wrenching and when she finally managed to grab the knife and kill David it hit even harder than in the game. The only way to describe it is brutal. It was longer, and wasn’t interrupted and the pure emotion and rage that Bella managed to portray was bone chilling and shook me to my core making me feel like I was in Ellie’s shoes and looking down at a mangled face of an awful man. Then when Joel finds her and she just breaks down I broke down too and it was just such an amazing and powerful episode I wanna rewatch it already.

    This was the first episode that actually made me bawl my eyes out. Seeing Ellie in this horrific situation and hearing the fear and desperation in her voice as she's about to be literally slaughtered just made me start crying - honestly moreso than this section in the game.
    I think it's because Bella Ramsey does look significantly younger than her age, and I just see my 11-year-old niece in her. So I think of this happening to my niece and her having to resort to horrific violence just to stay alive. No kid should ever have to go through something this horrific, and Ellie had no choice.

    Troy was great as James. He brought so much more depth to the character. That said, I'm glad at how much this episode stayed true to the game. It's one of my favorite parts because it's such a rollercoaster of emotions, from creepy David, to Joel's scary interrogation, to Ellie's strength and defiance, to the utter terror of the final stalking sequence. And man! That "baby girl" line always makes me tear up. So good. All of you should be proud of what you've made.

Don't even get me started on Pedro and Bella because that acting was indescribable. They deserve all the awards and all the recognition. The dark tone this episode set for both Ellie and Joel, how they're both driven to survive by their biggest fears - Joel losing his daughter again, and Ellie being alone - was one of the most intense, heart-breaking, inspiring things to watch. The only thing I wish this episode included was the game's OST at the end of the episode when Joel holds Ellie in his arms in the snow. Gustavo Santaolalla's All Gone (No Escape) soundtrack plays in the game reminding me of Joel's time with Sarah which made that scene where they reunite even more impactful, beautiful, and sad. Besides that aspect, the episode was absolutely fantastic. Bella deserves all the awards for her brilliant performance. Thank you Craig, Neil and the cast. I must say that episode 8 was one of the best things I've ever seen on screen. I love how you analyze the characters by really digging into the human psyche. And Craig, I admire your understanding of who people dealing with trauma as much I admire your job - screenwriters are definitely the people I can resonate the most with. One last thing, I'm amazed by the scene of killing the deer. It's been showing multiple times throughout the episode and I think it's so powerful - symbolically speaking and cinematographically speaking, it shows that Ellie is gradually losing her innocence in that cruel and dying world, that she will be dragged into the spiral of violence and vengeance. Bella portrayed it in an outstanding way, Ellie's development is consistent with what happened in the episode 7. Good foreshadow and very clear message. The difference with the game, when Joel reappears, was an excellent choice: as for me, it shows a different/inverted power dynamic between Joel and Ellie (she is not a little girl who needs Joel's protection anymore, she is capable of killing and defending herself) as a new way of looking at theirs relationship/co-dependance. Hats off to the crew!

    I’m loving this show so far, and I understand that certain elements from the game need to be trimmed for an adaptation, but the lack of infected in many of these episodes really make this world feel a little less dangerous. The humans of this world can be equally or even more dangerous than the infected, but they’re still out there. You never know when you might encounter one or many of them. They establish the clickers as being really terrifying threats in episode 2, and then you never really see any again. I was hyped to see the way this show would depict the stalkers because they seriously scared me during the game and could have lent to some amazing suspense, yet they're almost non-existent here. For this episode specifically, the mission in the game with all the infected swarming Ellie and David was INTENSE and it was completely omitted from this episode. Teaming up with David made it feel more like he was truly an ally, only for him to ultimately turn out to be the opposite. Felt a little rushed in this episode, like it was just a highlight reel of the cutscenes

    David demonstrates all the narcissistic traits of a cult leader who uses belief to control his subjects. This is a dark mirror to some of the far right religious cults that ignore all the evils their leader does under the false pretense that the leader is as close god incarnate as can be. I actually thought the TV adaptation might shy away from some of the violence depicted in the game; especially as Joel's interrogation method was shown in episode 7, albeit a less violent representation. I was glad my assumptions didn't come true and all the story elements from the game were included, including Joel's arbitrary used of brutality to find his way back to Ellie. Joel's final evolution from "cargo carrier" to surrogate father in this episode was just as strong as in the game with that line "It's Okay baby girl, I got you".

It was so much more impactful for him to have gotten in the building while it was on fire because he heard her screaming. The look of horror when Ellie stops attacking Davids corpse with the machete broke my heart. The use of comedy in the opening was very effective because it made people put their guard down.
