  • Host Troy Baker and Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann unpack the emotional crossroads inside Episode 6. Neil reveals what key aspects of Joel and Ellie came from the actors who played them in the game and shares an Easter egg from Craig’s life that they put in this episode. Finally, they talk about how director Jasmila Žbanić brought the community of Jackson to life, and how carefully they adapted a beloved argument between Joel and Ellie from the game. HBO’s The Last of Us podcast is produced by HBO and Pineapple Street Studios.

It was so nice to see Joel breakdown confessing how broken he is and how he has failed so much. It feels so real and genuine then you can't help but feel the emotion in ellie's frustration too. I think ellie's line in the game is so powerful that there was no way they wouldn't include it and the fear in her voice is spot on. Kudos to Ashley Johnson for adding the profanity to make it more impactful and emotional. It may seem so out of place from a writer's perspective but it makes it feel real because life isn't scripted and sometimes we say things that don't necessarily fit when were upset. Also though it wasn't mentioned but I can't help but feel joel's line about stealing a horse and riding away was poking fun back at the game because that's what ellie did. Obviously there were other easter eggs like the rabbits, bow and arrow, the deer hanging and the fence they went through to get to tommy's. There were so many references back to the game, its crazy.

Graham Greene and Elaine Miles as Marlon and Florence were such a treat to watch, and a lovely way to open this episode!
Though their scene was only so long, they speak volumes about Indigenous kinship and ways of living and do so with such chemistry. From Florence's offering of soup, to Marlon's "howaah," and "holeh," I found myself in an Aunties living room, catching her and Uncle exchanging knowing glances and snickers through my eyelashes.
I like to think us Indigenous People would be thriving, similar to this in an apocalyptic world. In this scene, we see through Indigenous ways of life that we have been here long before, and we will be here long after. "Hide? Came here before you were born, sonny." Florence and Marlon's cabin in the woods, their traditional clothing, beaded earrings, hunting practices, laughter and softness and resilience; always here, through time immemorial.
(also; it was v accurate of ellie to steal from them on their way out, and then claim, "they dont know anything." lol!)
This felt like a breath of fresh air, as an Indigenous person myself, to just see good, accurate representation. And to see how easy it could be!!! It's crazy to think in this day and age I'm still crying over seeing people like me on screen lol

The Joel and Ellie confrontation is one of the moments that had to be done right. And I think they pulled it off. The scene is basically the same as the game, and the actors believably portray the proper emotions and dynamic that needed to be conveyed in this scene. And of course this scene was supported by the amazing handling of Joel and Ellie’s relationship throughout the show. Especially with Pedro’s beautiful monologue to Tommy earlier in the episode. Emotional action is such a good way of defining this episode.

My dude, why can't you just let a positive response be just that? A positive response.
Sure, nepotism is indeed a real thing in today's society, but this was a nice wholesome story that LITERALLY hurts nobody.
And if you're thinking "What about other female singers trying to find their shot?", we've had the likes of Agnes Obel, Lotte Kestner, even Linda Ronstadt, all of which are up-and-coming, underrated or legacy female singers involved in the season so far. It's just in this instance, Craig knew his real-life daughter (who already has an established following on Spotify so it's not like he just picked her for the sake of "I'm famous and I can make her famous by using her for my show") could absolutely nail an emotional cover of Depeche Mode for an emotional scene involving his, as he calls Bella, 'adopted daughter'. And he was absolutely right, it's a beautiful cover and fits the scene perfectly. Simples.

Thank you for taking the time, and making the conscious effort to portray the realistic issues we would have. I have wondered for years how women prior to modern times dealt with menstruation, because it’s dang inconvenient now, in a developed country, I can’t imagine how it is for women without access to modern period products, running water, and toilet facilities. I know that many girls in Africa simply don’t go to school while on their periods, because they have no way to deal with it there. So thank you🌟

In that movie you see an aging Outlaw, William Munny, struggling with being as notorious as he was in his younger years. He has a younger outlaw riding with him that had this mythology in his mind about Munny. But seeing him in reality, it bursts that bubble. Until the end... when something happens to someone he cares greatly about -- THEN the William Munny of legend is awakened and it is intense. Knowing where this story is headed, I feel a similar build up to that of The Unforgiven.

Mighty thin ice is certainly iconic, when I met Troy at a convention I recorded him saying the line but with my name instead of Ellie’s. The context is NOT the same as “Don’t say another word”, cause as Troy said that is a plead, whereas “mighty thin ice” was a threat. Pedro’s Joel in general has been much warmer and caring to Ellie, making her growing attachment feel more believable/earned, a perfect example being how Troy’s Joel reacted to Ellie saving him compared to Pedro’s reaction. All the nods of respect Pedro gives to Ellie like when she says Tess’s death wasn’t her fault, or when she took 2nd watch, are subtle but important moments that Troy’s Joel would not have given her, and would’ve just scolded her on for challenging him. These feel like changes that were brought about not just cause of Pedro but because of Neil seeing where he can improve the storytelling as well, cause they were flaws that were always there. Pedro’s Joel also goes the extra mile with his concern for her having trauma over killing, dressing animals, seeing skeletons, etc. and he took more time explaining things to her like how the outbreak started.

As much as I ADORE the "mighty thin ice" line, I immediately understood why they didn't use it. I was still bummed it wasn't used, but Troy's amazing delivery (to me) comes from a place of anger and frustration. Pedro's take on Joel is older and more tired - he's sadder and far more broken. Still adore the new scene and Bella's voice crsck when she pushed Pedro had me in tears. Amazing episode!

I think my favorite part of this episode was a line that was not in the game during Ellie's confrontation with Joel:
"Do you give a s*** about me or not?" -Ellie
    "Of course I do." -Joel
He says is almost without thinking, and this shows how close these two have become and deep down, he really wants her to know that he cares about her.

Phenomenal episode and acting from everyone. I love this adaptation so much, however this feels like it needed to be 12 episodes. So much of the bonding is through combat, barely making it through clickers, random enemies, stealthing through buildings etc. I feel like we should’ve had 1 more episode of them traveling and surviving prior to what we got in this episode. Loving this show, I just feel like it’s condensing down their relationship due to the time constraints of only having 9 episodes, while also making their travels feel slightly less dangerous and shorter than it is in the game which in turn heightens the relationship between Joel & Ellie.

    • @alejo5267

To be honest most of that bonding in the game is done through gameplay which is impossible here. Random enemies, sneaking through buildings and picking infected one by one would be unbelievably dull on tv. Although I would’ve loved to see 12 episodes with brand new storylines and characters

It’s only gotten worse tbh, I know this was one of the few gripes critics had with the show, and it’s definitely noticeable.
They really should have stretched it to 12 episodes or something and lingered more in certain scenes, certain areas..slow down the dialogue, etc.
Now obviously episode 3 had its own pace going most of the time. But as far as the main story,
I’m also not a fan of the flashbacks that are actually flashes, like another one of Sarah this episode.

this show is absolutely amazing! even if i knew nothing about the games i find it to be just a great ride.this is a master class in how a adaptation of a game to movie/tv show should be, honoring the source material while adding its own ideas or flashing out ideas that couldnt be done in the game. i know there will be those that criticize the changes and tear the show apart for ruining things, but i also know there will be plenty of people praising the changes, not that the game is bad, but just being able to tell the same story in a different way. I especially like how troy baker has ben very positive about Pedro pascal's portrayal of joel its ok to be protective of something you love, but its even better to share that love with another person who also loves that character.
great job so far keep up the great work!
    will there be a season 2? 3?4?
