I love that Joel was actually awake. In the game he is never shown conscious after falling off the horse until he wakes up after Ellie gets in trouble with David. Having Joel tell her to leave him and go back to Tommy and then her staying with him and stitching him up while he tries not to scream and freak her out was just perfect. Better then the game

    • @rorocio93
      @rorocio93 Год назад +138

Yeah, I think in the game they did that to create an atmosphere of loneliness since we were going to play as Ellie being alone and defenseless, we had to feel her fear, but here we are not going to play as Ellie, we're going to watch her so it's different, we don't need that atmosphere that much.

For the game, Joel being barely conscious in the game creates a sense of dread and suspense that all of the responsibility lies in Ellie to pull through to keep Joel alive. I find that works extremely well in Left Behind and the main story since Joel's dire condition emphasizes the player's need to act quickly, which also heightens the tension. It also gave way to the tender moment when Ellie said, "You're gonna make it.." while she caresses Joel's forehead and rests beside him.
There's a nice contrast that is established as well when Joel gets up searching for her by fighting/torturing David's men, all while being fairly weak and nearly on the brink of death; despite that, he'll fight with all his strength to save Ellie, reinforcing how deep the bond between the two has become.

From the moment the kiss happened, I cried. I cried for the rest of the episode, even after the credits I was still crying. It hit me like a sack of bricks, knowing the relevance of it. She literally had a flashback to Riley, the person she had spent hours, days, weeks, months, thinking about what she could have done differently. She’s thought about this before with Joel, what she would do if every different scenario came true if she had to save his life. Just like Joel has with Ellie, and ultimately Sarah. Just like Ellie with Riley. She is using her mental scenario training from her trauma and hypothetical daydreaming that is an aftereffect of her traumatic event with Riley, to make a fast decision on whether or not she will leave Joel in such a crucial situation. I’m in shambles.

I was worried from the previous episode that it seemed kind of rushed for people who haven't played the game if they would love ellie as much as we do. I stand corrected, the way they mirrored riley and joel's relationship to ellie was so beautiful and heart wrenching. I didn't fully grasp ellie's fear of ending up alone in the game because she seemed so strong. This episode made me fear for ellie even though I know how things played out because it was like I was in that moment with her. Thinking about how helpess she feels trying to save joel and reminded of how riley turned and she didn't. Then to see her jump to action stitching him up and how they bonded relying on each other was very satisfying to watch. I'm so glad to see joel awake in these moments not because I thought he might die but because the eye contact made between Joel and ellie says so much. Even though Joel doesn't say anything at the end but the eye contact to me was saying I trust you ellie to do what is needed. He could've resisted and tried to stitch it himself but he accepted and appreciated what she was trying to do. What he said in the beginning was out of stubbornness and trying to act tough. Seeing his vulnerability and acceptance of her efforts is so heartwarming.

I’ve got a feeling, or hope rather, that this podcast is so successful that they will continue it next season (which I’m positive they will) just with the addition of video to accompany it. It doesn’t even have to be elaborate, literally just throw a camera in the room they are filming it in now! Lol! 😂

You can tell how much passion is put into this show. Episode 7 was incredible. When Take on Me played I shed a lot of tears because of its significance to Ellie’s character and the Last of Us in general. That moment felt like you were rewarding the fans of the games for their investment and attachment to the games. Bella’s performance felt so real and genuine. The scene when Ellie and Riley got infected was so emotional. Left Behind Together playing when the credits rolled was so perfect. Thank you for this amazing show and thank you to everyone for their performances. This show will be remembered for its incredible performances and storytelling for decades.

I loved the episode. It was beautiful. I selfishly wish we could’ve seen what became of Riley. It’s obvious that Ellie learns that she’s immune, but what of Riley.? Did she turn.? Was she left to roam the mall.? Did she take the “easy” way out.? Did she ask Ellie to do it, or was Ellie forced to in self defense.? It was always a question I had after I played the Left Behind DLC.
Regardless, a beautiful retelling. Can’t wait for what’s to come. It’s only going to get more emotional from this point on. 🥺😭

The joy, relief, dread, fear, love, sadness, humour, all of it, was perfectly paced and (though 55 minutes won't be the same as the run time of the DLC) it was an excellent adaptation that achieved the same goal of that DLC. This show really surprised me, it's a beautiful combination of old & new, and this podcast is an excellent companion-piece filled with so much heart, care, and thought. Thank you, just thank you.

I've seen an interview with Bella Ramsey where she said that the script, she received did not include a scene where Riley dies. it's more impactful to leave how that played out to the viewers imagination. So, I'm using my imagination and the information we get in the show for what may have happened.
Keep in mind that Marlene has been keeping tabs on Ellie since she put her in FEDRA school. She tells Riley that her friend Ellie can't join the Fireflies. She does not want Ellie leaving the school where she can watch out for her as she promised her friend, Ellies mother that she would. She may have decided to send Riley to Atlanta to keep her away from Ellie because she doesn't want her to lure Ellie away from the safety of the FEDRA school. She might even have approached Riley to join the Fireflies in the first place for the purpose of separating them from each other.
When they are both bitten, they decided to stay together in the mall until they turn. Of course, Ellie is never going to turn so one of two things happen. First Riley turns and attacks Ellie who is forced to kill her, then the Fireflies with Marlene come looking for Riley and the pipe bombs she's made and discover Ellie. We know that Marlene prevented the Fireflies from shooting Ellie and instead took her back to their HQ and chained her up until she turned, probably because Marlene was still thinking of Ellie's mother and wanted to give Ellie as much time as she could before having to kill her. Then when she didn't turn after a day or two, she kept her chained for three weeks to be sure of what seemed to be impossible, her immunity. She even contacted the Firefly doctors on the west coast telling them about Ellie and received a reply to get her there for testing, the message that she showed Amy when she pressed her about what was up with Ellie.
The second scenario is the same as the first with the exception being that Ellie didn't kill Riley. The Fireflies came looking for Riley and the bombs, found her changed and attacking Ellie and shot her. Then seeing Ellie's bite, they assumed that Riley bit her and were ready to shoot Ellie as well until Marlene stopped them.
In those scenarios Ellie is feeling either guilt over having to shoot Riley or survivors guilt over Riley being killed by the Fireflies while she remains alive due to the immunity that she didn't know she had. Either way it's Riley she is talking about when she tells Joel that Bryan wasn't the first person she killed. She doesn't mean the infected who bit them both or even the one in the basement that she killed. That one she cut and killed out of anger and revenge for Riley's death which is why she didn't tell Joel about it because that killing was about Riley. She told Tess about being bitten in the mall and could have used that encounter as the first kill she told Joel she had. By not wanting to talk about it even though she asks Joel questions just like that, she is showing that she doesn't trust herself not to slip up and mention Riley. When Joel is trying to talk about her feelings over shooting Bryan, she is struggling to find a way to tell him that she wasn't traumatized by it, so she says it wasn't her first time. She realizes that this will lead to talking about Riley and shuts down, much like Joel does over mention of Sarah. They are both scarred by loss and unable to deal with it out in the open.
This really is about love in all its varied and complicated forms, how it can harm you and save you. it's the motivation for the best and worst in us and is never as simple and pure as we would like it to be. This is a serious meditation on love and what it means to be human wrapped up in both in a game and entertainment. A remarkable achievement.

I do admit I kind of felt like I wanted a change, the show had done so well at totally subverting expectations but for a show only fan I imagine this was great. My wife kept asking for the 7th episode what is going on who is this what is gonna happen. Usually I’d say wait to not ruin it but I said wait because I wasn’t even sure if what played would happen. They have some such an excellent job at this, they made this thing for a game fan to watch with a new fan and literally I can’t ever imagine this wasn’t one of the main pitches because of how well they execute this idea thus far.

The timing is appropriate for the mall arcade.
Early 2000's were the last throws of mall arcades, at least in North America, so that was probably one ot the last mall arcades in that world.

I don't think Joel is in the mindset of being Ellie's father yet, but for me as a father, if I had to push my daughter away to save herself my tear would be the fear of her being alone in a world like that. It would almost be apologetic.
I also wouldn't rush her to do it though which was kind of strange to me because I would want to make sure she knows exactly how to get back to Tommy safely (like Bill trying to sure Frank knew what to do after he is dead)... that tells me somehow he wants her gone as fast as possible despite the possibility that she is not prepared, maybe he doesn't do goodbye well and just wants her to leave or maybe he thought he is dying and doesn't want her to see it.
