Caleb, i love your videos and they've helped me more than once....i would like to mention that you should put your barrel nut adapter at 90 degrees to your torque wrench though to keep from adding additional torque. If you put the adapter in line with the torque wrench you are adding leverage length which increases the applied torque
Great video but a few suggestions. For installing the barrel nut style pre-fit you should secure the action using a vice and the solus internal action wrench then use a torque wrench to torque the barrel nut to spec then Re-check with go/no-go
I like the barrel vice. I was wondering if it could also be used to remove and replace a barrel on a Mini 14. The barrel vices I've seen look like slapped together junk with wooden inserts that require rosin .
@@bartrice8278 I bought mine from Preferred Barrel Blanks. I chose that company because I could specify a reamer that would accommodate 88gr bullets. Criterion also has them. There are others as well. Good luck!👍🏻
Caleb - quick question. Will most chassis fit a barreled action using the Savage nut or do you need to find a chassis specific to that? I'm thinking chassis clearance just forward of action being an issue with the nut. I like the idea of the nut because if you're a volume shooter - no lathe or gunsmith required means minimal downtime once a barrel falls off. A way a guy can shoot PRS type matches without gunsmith expense.
Awesome. But can they make receivers and barrels cheaper? I can't shoot 1/2" moa but I love to build them so it would be nice for factory quality custom parts.
Awesome video. I went with a McMillan A5 stock for my build as Im not a big fan of chassis. But the one you selected for that is pretty slick and if I ever do a chassis build I think I'll go with that.
Isn’t the barrel-nut adapter on the torque wrench working like a “crow’s foot” where you should have the gadget at 90 degrees from the torque wrench handle? The way you used it you’re essentially extending the handle and throwing off the torque measurement - unless I’m mistaken and the tool already compensates for the torque recommendation?
@bobvizza5490 I think the builder was just trying to show the steps but wasn't focused on using a savage shank barrel. He warned against using shouldered pre-fits but ultimately that's what he built. I have Origins and now a Solus too and use proofs prefit without issue.
This has me thinking the 6.5 grendel rifle search for a deer/hog inside 200y build can actually be an affordable build myself. How about some items listed in stock for this build? Much respect on the suggested items by anyone. I like to do self stuff, but this is a first for me.
I wouldn’t spend $1500 or more building up an action and barrel for a 6.5 Grendel…. Just get a Howa mini barreled action for $500 as your starting point. Even comes with a trigger.
Im not a gunsmith but I don't think you were using the torque wrench properly. You extended the leverage with the tool. I think you suppose to torque with a 90 degree hold on tool? Still works your way but it might be torque more than 44lbs a bit.
My understanding it has to do with Monetization. They don't get money on their videos if they violate RUclips policy. Notice Brownell's doesn't have any commercials (that's a good thing)?
Shouldn't action recoil lug be pushed back against chassis mount. That seems like alot of play. Could u take up a bunch of that with glass or shim or something?
ok so putting the barrel nut (wrench )in the vise getting that solid ,then using the (action bar an applying the 44foot lbs ,no scratches to upper maby that would work >>>>>
It would be really neat to build, there’s only 1 problem! Just the action itself is over $800 !!! So by the time you built this! You damn near could’ve bought a 50BMG rifle!
Leaving aside that I wouldn't want to be within 100m of some sucker who bought an $800 .50BMG rifle when they pulled the trigger, a complete Aero Solus is listed for between $1800 and $2500 on their website, whereas a Barrett will cost at least $10k and more likely well in excess of that.
You put on a barrel nut at 13 minutes then when you come back it’s in the barrel vice after it’s removed from the barrel vice(19 1/2 minute mark)it doesn’t appear to have the barrel nut you put on 6 minutes earlier. Other Zerrmat barrel installs I see either no barrel nut or the barrel nut get left on after installation. Sorry if I am just completely misunderstanding something here.
For everyone complaining about the price: Howa 1500 barreled action from Brownell's: $440 KRG Bravo Chassis: $400 That's a sub $1000 rifle and requires nothing more than simple hand tools. No vice, action wrench or gauges needed.
I dont think you realize how hard it is to find helpful content on firearms assembly. I think most creators avoid it because they dont have the power of brownells behind them, but most of the videos that do exist are so cut up, they're next to useless
You don't need a field gauge for this, and no new build should ever need a field gauge. A field gauge is only used if your no-go gauge fails and you don't mind shooting with much lower performance. A field gauge means "no" but still technically safe.
Great explanation. Only comment on the barrel grease. You used quite a bit and I would think you had enough in your hair where you didn't need to break that jar out! 😅
That action lube plus stinks, i can't believe you stuck your fingers in it. I use an acid brush because my wife complains about the smell, i come home from the shop after doing barrels or lubing a machine gun, she can smell it from the garage when i get home.
These videos just earned you guys a few thousand dollars worth of business :)
It might have been nice to mention to make sure the recoil lug is pused back against the recess in the chassis.
Beat me to it

Came to the comments just for this.
Hopefully he's seen this comment and learns from it.
I really love you guys’ videos. They’re clean, succinct, free of obnoxious editing and very informative for AR owners. Keep it up

I cannot believe how simple that was. I wonder how much that rifle kicks? You should do a part 3: Picking an optic Part 4: Zeroing that optic.
Wow - Really enjoyed this build. Thank you for the very clear and concise instructions. Beautifully done!
Great job at explaining how to do it Right, keep up the great job.
NGL I love the build (aside from cal.) but I also dig that sweet flannel!
Now I have another build on the list, thanks Caleb awesome video brother
awesome rifle Caleb...... thanks for sharing this series....
Caleb, it may not matter much, but it is best practice….Please place torque wrench 90 degrees to crawfoot barrel wrench. Proper torque is achieved.
Looking into a 25-06AI build. This is good info to have as I will probably be using a Savage 110 action and small shank barrel.
I like the barrel vice. I was wondering if it could also be used to remove and replace a barrel on a Mini 14. The barrel vices I've seen look like slapped together junk with wooden inserts that require rosin .
Great video! What is a short action chasis. And will it work with a Howa m1500 BBL
love this series. fairly strait forward but still informative
Thanks, Caleb! I built a 22 Creedmoor using the Solus action and a Zermatt pre-fit barrel. It shoots great!
Where did you find a 22 Creedmoor barrel? I’ve looked everywhere.
@@bartrice8278 I bought mine from Preferred Barrel Blanks. I chose that company because I could specify a reamer that would accommodate 88gr bullets. Criterion also has them. There are others as well. Good luck!👍🏻
@@bartrice8278 just ordered a solus Lightweight action for a 22 Creedmoor build myself! What chassis did you go with?
How cool! This new systems are pretty amazing. Thank you for the great video
Looking forward to the next step.

great vid, look forward to building my own.
Nice bolt action rifle. Looking forward to the optic and rings selection in part 3. 👍

Nice! Thanks!
In pretty sure I way over torqued my first barrel nut on an AR build... What would you suggest? Not to talk it apart? It functions perfect....
Do you remove the ejector when checking headspace with the go/no go gauges?
Thanks

That is correct, you torque at 90 degrees.
I notice in another video for AR's he uses the barrel-nut crow's foot correctly but doesn't point it out@@MrPiimpslap

Why is everyone afraid to show "gunsmithing" except Brownells?
Because they are not dependent on the monetization of the channel for income.
My understanding it has to do with Monetization. They don't get money on their videos if they violate RUclips policy. Notice Brownell's doesn't have any commercials (that's a good thing)?
I had the same question
Amazing the options shooters/hunters have today.
Thank you for the vid. Loved every minute. Now I need to get out my wallet.
Brownells doesn't need YT monies
What would you have done on the first barrel (Remington style) if your headspace wasn't right?
Check out the first video as it explains that.
@@CalebSavant Will do. Thanks. I've built a Savage but never messed with the other style.

Did you remove the ejectors off the bolt before using go/no-go gauges?
He said that those g/ng gages are cut away on one side, but since the Solace has two ejectors, I think you should.
Isnt the Solus 55 in lbs for front and 65 in lbs for the rear action screws?
It would be really neat to build, there’s only 1 problem! Just the action itself is over $800 !!! So by the time you built this! You damn near could’ve bought a 50BMG rifle!

These actions are very nice and the closest you’ll get to custom. I’ve shot one and it’s definitely comparable to my $1700 bergara b14 hmr pro
Once the action is installed in the stock does it prevent the Remington bolt release from rattling around?
What does the rifle way before optic and how long of barrel? I am going to do a similar buikd just haven't decided on my route.
Should of stood the gun on the butt stock to seat the recoil lug before tightening the to action screws.
What is the build weight. At this point. With the mdt metal mag?
The torque should be at a 90 degree angle with the wrench.
What length finished barrel did you use?
But how much does that combo weigh??!!
What torque wrench is that?
Did you take off the barrel nut before installing the trigger?
No, we used the Zermatt style barrel.
You put on a barrel nut at 13 minutes then when you come back it’s in the barrel vice after it’s removed from the barrel vice(19 1/2 minute mark)it doesn’t appear to have the barrel nut you put on 6 minutes earlier. Yes, please watch the barrel portion of video 1.
No recoil lug ???
👍

Noice
Should have removed the firing pin when checking head space.
Why would you have to do that.
Wish I had $4,000 laying around to build this. The chassis alone is $1,600 plus tax.
Love the video but that Chassis is ugly compared to some of the other options you had

That's almost easier than building an AR😂
Subbed ya, I hope them commies at YT don’t remove your videos over the dumb new rules
Aero has about $150 into these actions.......overpriced
That's how every custom action is....
Go build your own for $150
