I appreciate the video, even the dad joke, it give me the confidence necessary to tackle my stock upgrade. I sort of had an idea it would be simple but the video cemented it for me..thanks
After the first video you made about this kind of set up. I have an older stevens odd 6, and wanted to upgrade in the near future to a more futurized cartridge. I absolutely love this new kind of set up and am going to go this route when Im ready! Thank you for this!
thats all use on scope bases. I also put red on the bottom of the bases and clean the action/bases with acetone or carb cleaner before. The bases always don't fit 100% to the action. And between the loctite on the bases and the screws......its nearly impossible to loosen. If I have to remove it, I heat it with a small torch. Blue goes on the screws that hold the rings to the bases. I have had my share of bases/pic rails come loose over time.
@@christopherkoenig2279 I would not recommend using actone or carb cleaner on blued steel. It will rust, trust me. If its some other protection like ceracoat then it does not matter. Remove all oils on blued steel is not good.. But back to the loctite. Removing it with heat is easy and not destructive. just warm until it smokes, then it will come loose.
@@jmkhenka Using a good soldering iron tip is a good way to heat without heating everything up. Might take a little longer but holding tip on screw head heats screw itself .
I was looking into getting one of these Howa 16” barreled actions and using an mdt chassis, but with the chassis I want mdt doesn’t sale as a package deal. You have to buy the buttstock separately, it’s better to just buy a sig cross at this point and get an 18” barrel
Ironically this is almost exactly like the build Ive been thinking of doing. just don't know if I should spend the extra few hundred on the chassis at first or hunt with the rifle for a year or two before getting the chassis.
I just purchased an MDT Oryx chassis and it would not properly latch with my Magpul Aics mags. MDT suggested slight modification to the poly mags, I just opted to order some MDT mags (which of course worked). Just a note on my experience with pmags.
Hey Caleb, what's going on, did brownells jump the "gun" (lol) and release this vid before MDT could release their own and update their website? I ask this because it isn't showing me on the MDT website that a Howa 1500 SA action option is available for the MDT Field stock.
@@chriskey6249 just saw them available last night in Australia via afaik, a non brownells affiliated business. Brownells might have the exclusive in the North America and possibly Europe?
I have a question about these style stocks/chassis. Assuming the positioning of the action in the stock is accurate and it's torqued appropriately, would there be any practical benefit to bedding the action into this style of stock?
From what I was told that makes logical sense is that neither company can hit each others windows of specifications so it won’t be a perfect fit. Bedding is the only way to perfectly seat the action. I’ve never tried it in anything other than wood stocks, but it makes sense to me.
I just built this exact setup and it's untouchable for the money. Just under 12 Hundo from ARCA rail to decent glass. Excellent factory trigger. Only one zero/break-in day at the range and it put up a 1" 100yd group with M80 ball...LOL. Not shabby; that will likely be the worst group it ever produces. Question/complaint: Is anyone else having mag insertion problems? I have a ton of different AI pattern mags, and they all fit VERY tight. Like no chance of it dropping on its own ever. Must remove from bench and wrestle out. I bought a MDT one to give it a fair shake, and it's barely better. The bolt is pretty smooth on this rifle, but is wonky picking up rounds out of the mags as well. The next time I have the action out I'm going to put the factory bottom metal on and try it on the bench. Still no ragrets. I'm guessing I'm going to end up doing some file/dremel work, but was wondering if others are experiencing the same thing.
Make sure you slide those rings as far FORWARD as they'll go on the rail before tightening otherwise over time they'll slide forward on their own under recoil. We all know what a moving optic does to group sizes so avoid this common mistake.
Great video except the torquing sequence is absolutely backwards. If you torque the front one in the back one, you can have a bow in the middle. Taking note from Twerking down head bolts on a car engine. Start in the center and spread towards each end. That way it lays down flat. Otherwise great video.
i say its worse being left eye dominant but right handed i have to shoot left handed or i wouldn't be able to see down my sights but AKs work fine though
You lost me when you used a crescent wrench (Moscow micrometer, Texas socket set, Swedish nut lathe…) on the scope rings. Whatever gun smith kit comes with that needs to go in the garbage.
Sad that they use plastic nuts for something like this and at the cost. Nice unit in general, has the right things where necessary especially for an entry field level while still allowing for some decent bench work.
@nathanskupowski4726 most likely you but new shoes when the laces break because it's too difficult to replace them, or you get shoes without laces because it's too difficult to tie them

@WayStedYou yea my bad i must have been looking at the wrong price, but than again i was never interested in the stock because I thought it was trash lol
Plastic is what it is, but the action bedding on this stock is better than any Boyds I've ever had. The plastic is extremely stiff, and feels a ton better than the glass style. People like me want the MLOK capability up front. It has a nice channel for adding lead too (that's really meant as a removable stiffening spar, to allow access to the MLOK holes). This stock also does an inherent conversion to AI mags, which Boyds doesn't offer provisions for.
Put mine in a Boyd’s. Extremely happy with how it turned out. Even with a slightly botched bedding job.

Thanks Caleb, great video.
I'm waiting for them to release the Savage version. I love watching the videos you guys make.
Was able to pick up one for my 12FV during their black friday sale. Listed as a factory second, but don't see a thing wrong with it.

What mdt chassis would fit for Howa 6.5 prc carbon fiber barreled action?
Do these not need bedding to the chassis?

Release the 7prc barreled action, and Ill buy it tonight. Sitting here waiting on the email
Great Video! What barrel is that? Will this stock take the Howa heavy barrel?
Yes I built mine with the #6 profile 308 barrel and there is room for more.
What length barrel is used for this build?
Good Video
I may be missing this, but not every HOWA shows if it’s short action or long action how do I tell before I order the wrong chassis?
If you order a chassis from MDT, call or email. They were very helpful answering that very question for 2 separate chassis that I purchased from them
Do you need a magazine or can you use the floor plate?

Had a howa build a while back without those issues. i'd call in and see if they have a known issue/solution for it
How long is the fore-end ? Would you be able to fit the 4 slot m-lok adapter for arca or can you fit the pro chassis version at 13”
It only has 3 MLOK slots, but I used the sling stud hole as a 4th point for my ARCA rail.
I received an answer from Brownells the fore-end is 11.3” long
Does anyone know if the 16.25” HOWA barrel will fit on this field stock? Or is it too short
It'll fit. We tried it.
How long is that barrel
thats wht i was wondering look like 16.25 but i could be wrong
Actually that was a good "Dad" joke.

Man I really like this but 300$ is alittle steep I currently have the howa1500 in the HCR chassis it’s nice but heavy
Magpul is no different with their hunter stock at $300. But it is nice buying the Howa action seperate from Brownells then buying stock seperate.

What is MDT? And how do you get the right model?
Sad fact that us left handed shooters have adapted to using right handed actions! The true lefty actions are 2 to 300 dollars more !
It also comes down to resale tho. Selling a lefty gun isn't always as easy

The plastic nuts just appear to hold the action screws for shipping
If you know anything about bolt action guns then youd know theyre not for use they just for shipping so the bolts dont fall out and or get lost. smh.

You pay a lot for a cheap , stiff , yucky , clunky , stock . The aluminum saddle for the barreled action is good , the rest is junk !

Boyds offers m5 dbm bottom metal inletting but you will have to pillar bed the stock and bed the action
