I never caught the banter about feeling like she’d seen things before. I liked Sera but never romanced or invested in her heavily. That said, I think the explanation may be a lot simpler than we realize. She’s leaning on the fourth wall, not breaking it entirely, but on some level she was written to be aware of her situation in the game. I won’t say that explains everything, but it seems an appropriate explanation for her deja vu moments.

You know, that was something I thought of when I heard her speech at the proposal scene. Something about it felt like it broke the fourth wall a bit. I think this has become the only ‘Sera is Special’ outcome I respect, haha.

She knows that she's not smart. She realizes that her narrow view of things is for convenience and safety since she doesn't have to move too far away from things like Andraste and the Maker in order to pretend she's anything but an elf. Most people would look in a mirror and be able to see what they are.
Well, maybe not these days so much. We seem to be having just this sort of crisis these days when people are filled with self-doubt and self-loathing and are grasping at anything that might give them some small measure of comfort, even if it is delusional and false. Sera is one of the most IMPORTANT voices in Dragon Age Inquisition because she and Bull seem to be the only ones insisting you look at the individuals under your power rather than seeing them as little more than expendable cannon fodder. And even then, Bull still has some concept of The Greater Good that was drilled into him by the Qun. Whereas Sera has perspective of only what affects her, which may sound small minded to some, but really is important when it comes to leaders making decisions and treating individual deaths as "losses" and "attacks on their group" rather than as personal tragedies.
I agree with her very little about her opinions on magic, but her opinions on people are spot on. I love Sera dearly, even if we don't agree. She makes you remember that there are people who you need to care about, while she learns from you the value of a well managed organisation to affect better change.

@@alnotbiggaytho7124 as a man who loves stories, and who knows how to deal with groups of people, Varric still has the same big picture thinking that the others have. He can still see people die and feel bad about it, but see it as a necessary evil in service to the greater good (unless it's people he loves, like Hawke).
Whereas for Sera, she doesn't have to love someone for her to know people dying for a cause is unacceptable, and when it happens, you cannot be allowed to forget it. You have to face it as a harsh reality that cannot be swept aside for loftier ideals, or accepted as a "consequence". She values individual lives more than any other character in the game, because she values what's real more than what's a story.
Varric is my favourite character in the entire game but Sera still provides what Varric doesn't.

      @bradtorville5526 Год назад

Except that's exactly how Iron Bull sees things. He doesn't see people. He sees objects that need to be eradicated and removed. Cole sees this often in the party banter. And there is often a duplicity and contradiction in Bull that Cole observes. Like going along with Krem's choice to live life as a man when it's very clear that Bull definitely knows that she's a woman. When Bull asks Cole what number he is thinking of, for some reason his thoughts go back to the very moment, that fight in the tavern when the guards were trying to kill Krem. They had torn at her clothes and one of them swung a mace at Krem but Bull got in the way and lost his eye. When Bull looked down, he saw a woman lying on the ground, her clothes were all torn and it was very clear that it was a woman. Not a man simply because that's how Krem saw herself. And yet late on when Bull hired Krem as one of the Chargers, he goes out of his way to tell Krem that he IS a man just because he views himself that way. Stuff a sock down the pants and bind the breasts tightly and voila! You're a man! Yeah, okay.
Sera's doing the same thing. She looks in a mirror and doesn't see an elf because it is the one thing she despises most about herself. Simply wishing it away or denying that it exists and is what she truly is doesn't make it disappear or suddenly become untrue. But for Sera, this is the case. She's not an elf and this allows her to reject all things that are too "elfy" and suddenly she can be happy again. All of the old elves were just demons which makes them all so much more easier to reject and she embraces Andraste and the Maker and this is meant to bring her comfort and safety. But even that doesn't help when she stops to question any of it or it is challenged in any way. She goes into a panic and demands that the Inquisitor reassure her that it's true and all the rest is just lies so she can continue with her delusions.
Bull however burned himself out in the Seheron. He forced himself to kill so much, conditioned himself to see nothing but objects instead of people to make it easier to sleep at night, that he could barely move or do anything. He submitted himself for reeducation in order to once again feel nothing and see objects instead of people. His duplicity comes from his expertise in lying, both to himself and everyone around him. He lies about his feelings, about romance, about flirtation, about domination, about conquering sex partners, about everything. And if his personal quest is avoided or somehow missed, or if is it tackled but the Chargers are sacrificed, he remains loyal to the Qun because that's all he has left. He despises the very thought of becoming Tal'Vashoth. He loves his boys and won't forgive their sacrifice in the quest. But if they are saved and he disappoints the Qun and becomes Tal'Vashoth, he can still betray you if you don't reinforce the idea that "Hissrad" is dead and gone and he's now officially and forever "The Iron Bull". Then you have his complete loyalty. But if you fail to do that bit then he'll still turn on you because he has nothing to hold on to but being "Hissrad" despite having voiced his concerns about the whole alliance with the Qun at the start of that quest.
What we have in DA Inquisition are a lot of very flawed and messed up characters. All of them have major flaws and issues. Many suffer from poor self-esteem or self-hatred. Nearly all are filled with regret from things they'd done in their past or had done to themselves. Most don't really have a clue about what they're doing or what they want or how to go about getting any of it. Pretty much how life is generally for most people.

So when tiny bits of things that you wouldn't expect her to be aware of or know pop up, it really isn't all that surprising since no matter how she sees herself, she is an elf after all. Weird idea for a theory I got at the end of the episode:
So, Sera doesnt havent any crazy magical abilities, it's just that shes so weird that spirits are attracted to her as she dreams, so when she wakes up so only has vestigial memories from the dreams, but the memories are still there. That's why Cole and Solas are so interested in her, because she has something that makes her irresistible to spirits (probably the way she talks). So, the spirits might talk to her while shes sleeping, so she have memories and knowledge of things she shouldn't while not actually being all the weird.
Woah. that was a long thing, and I think i just kept repeating the same sentiment over and over, but yeah.

They could also be interested in her because she's so blatantly opposed to what she physically and racially is by refusing to accept anything elven about herself. It's a curious thing to behold and would have most rational people questioning it. It's fascinating and bewildering to witness such a creature as Sera. Even Dorian is taken with trying to figure her out. Most times though he just gives up and accepts her as a drinking partner which is par for the course since they both have esteem issues, self-loathing and are self-destructive to an extent. Kindred spirits, so to speak.

Theory: Sera is tall because she is an ancient elf that was forced to sleep like Solas at a very younge age. Because she didn't want to sleep she woke up early and obviously had no parents around to claim her because of this. She fears magic so much because she is secretly a dreamer who was constantly harassed by the demons she feared. After seeing a mage get mobbed and others being taken to the circle, she decided to hid her magic abilities by picking up a bow and posing as a Rougue. She is a tempest because it allows her to hide her magic when she slips up while guiding her arrows. And her ears point towards the fade because they are searching the magic that once use to cover thedas so she can stop hiding from the world

I wonder if the translation of what Solas says to Sera could also mean something like "I realize I trapped your spirit with my song something something heart" and his song meaning, the Veil he brought up. Sera's weird memory loss and mind issues could imply she is actually another Evanuri - like Mythal - that wasn't pushed into the Fade (possibly because there wasn't much of her to push behind the Fade, like Mythal who was only a wisp at the time) and I like to point to Andruil, the Goddess of the Hunt. Andruil's choice of weapon is the bow, she had a relationship with a woman already (lesbian, bi maybe - since she wanted Solas to serve her in her bed...whatever that meant) and eventually Andruil went mad until Mythal sapped her strength (like Solas did with Mythal later) and stole Andruil's knowledge of how to find the Void (maybe took a little too much or that memory theft combined with the loss of power made her forget more and more over the centuries). I'm not saying Sera never dies, I am wondering if Andruil's spirit hops to different bodies or keeps reincarnating, unable to enter the Fade.
Another hint toward that is Solas - who so strongly separates himself from the other elves, not considering them his people - tells Sera "We are not so far apart, you and I"
Because she was an Evanuri? Because she is powerless from Mythal taking her strength and Solas is still collecting his? Or because she is partly from a different time period, lost in the current time?

For my head-canon, and until the game proves otherwise, Sera is in some way being influenced by, or is, Andruil. From the Dragon Age wiki: "Andruil the Huntress, also known as the Lady of Fortune, is the Elven goddess of {the} hunt. To the Dalish, she represents their very survival".
If you recall when we first get to Skyhold Sera talks about asking Andraste what she stepped in, also says she can't wait to get back to making money. Here's the thing, when she does that the camera pans in close to her face and she looks away from the inquisitor. Classic theater acting "aside" to hint at something more going on there. I think that's a nod to the fortune part. She does that a bunch of times and it's all subtle nods to things she shouldn't really have knowledge of.
Our companions make comments about Sera's uncanny bow skills, Cole's comments about how she already knows where the arrow will land and doesn't need to watch it, but somehow can still see it, just confirms it for me. She's got a piece of or is Andruil, the Huntress. Solas I think sees it too... she's as far from what she's meant to be as possible. I don't think he meant her being Elven but not wanting to be Elven, that's too obvious for Solas. I think he recognizes her 'divinity' for lack of a better word.
She knows something isn't right about her too, thinking makes her head hurt and so on, and I bet her dislike of all things Elven is partly the uneasy feeling she gets when her Andruil side stirs. She hates it. Regardless, I think Sera is one of the best characters in a Bioware game. So easy to write her off for being immature and crass, but if you don't and stick with her, she's got so much depth.

Here is how I interpreted the documents at 4:07.
Notice of seizure: Lady Emmald died=seizure of property
Authority to seize: the property was to be used for the Grey Wardens to help with the Blight; however, they couldn't find the documents so this was enacted by an Arl (Arl of Denerim?)
Addendum postseizure: The estate was in shambles for multiple reasons (elements, animal infestation, and eventually the Blight). Before the Blight, they tried to restore the manor by selling goods, trade contracts, and miscellaneous structural elements (whatever that means) to fund the effort. When the Blight came it struck down the price on the property immensely.

    • @karinisaksson1961
      @karinisaksson1961 4 года назад

It's a fairly simple and straightforward legal document. The first part just describes the property to be seized. They then cite the legal justification for said seizure, i.e. "we will need this to fulfill our treaty obligations with the Grey Wardens." Since this treaty has not been presented, the authority for the seizure comes from the Arl and not the Wardens themselves. The addendum describes the things they actually wound up seizing and their determination that the manor itself is not usable for war purposes. They then provide for a reduction in the taxable value of the Emmald estate (taxes are probably levied based on property value).

Statements about her being the farthest thing from what she should be could easily mean that she's literally as opposite an elf as Solas could imagine. Maybe it's Solas trying to reach her in the hopes that if someone as distant from her ancestors as Sera could be made to connect to herself than no current elf is beyond hope. She's essentially a control group for his plan to rebuild the Elven empire. The elvish could be a less literal statement meaning "I know in my soul your heart is with our people", meaning that Solas feels that part of her is still connected with the elves deep down.
The stuff with Cole meanwhile is less about her having a spiritual nature and instead is a hint that she's some sort of savant when it comes to touching the fade. The fade response to emotions and impulse and Sera is basically pure emotion and impulse. To the point that she's basically a walking id. While she has limits and morality she seems to act on pure emotion. In effect, she's basically the opposite of a Tranquil, without also being a mage. That's why she seems to see things before they happen or turns her ears to the fade. Since time in the fade means nothing, to the point that time travel is possible on some level. Sera simply gets flashes of feelings that she's redoing things.

Sera has been one of my favorite characters since my first play through of this game. I romanced her first and I’ve always been a little irritated at people being like ‘oh she’s so irritating’ like they’ve never been friends with someone who’s not neurotypical. I’ve always hc that she is possibly a repressed mage or some kind of spirit attached person. The way she talks is too close to cole and because of the way she was raised she may never be able to love that part of herself. If she is attached to an old evanuris that would make some sense but I find it just as likely she might be something like hope or even a different than anders sort of justice.
She cares so much about people and that is such an important thing that in the real world people in power don’t understand, so I could never bring myself to play as an inquisitor without her approval. Caring about little people is important. I could go on for ages about Sera and all the reasons I love her but this is a RUclips comment so I’ll shove it for now lol.

Of all the things you can about Sera, there are five things that come to mind: She isn't always an agreeable girl, she's a rogue, and a thief ,and she'll tempt your fate and lastly, she's most certainly unique.
Sera is interesting in that she always talks but almost never says anything. I think a lot of her mystery comes from her not wanting to remember her past

About the quote: "Ar Dirthan' as ir elgara, ma sula e'var vhenan "
The second part I understand as: my joy is our heart/my joy is our love - but, since you pointed out that Elgar and Elgara are so close, I would like to point out that vhenan and elvhenan too are rather close. Following that, we could conceivably come up with translationgs like "(I) sing of the place of our people" or even "my joy are our people".
Also I wondered wether the elven language really uses the same grammatical structure as english.
In lots of languages, the antecedent (not a ative speaker, had to look that one up, hope I got it right) has a different place.
Translating the first part very loosly with I, to learn/Knowledge, something (probably a sort of preposition), (I) am, and spirit, we could also translate this with: "I am a spirit of Knowledge/Wisdom" (note that the words for Wisdom and Spirit switched place here, which like I said isn't uncommon in varying languages - think french: riviere rouge = river (of) red = red river).
All of this is based entirely on knowing who Solas turns out to be of course and kind of retroactively fitting this translation to that, so I'm not convinced myself, but still I wanted to put it out here for debate.

I loved Sera on my last playthrough. It was the first time I put time into befriending her. My Inquisitor at the start was quite dour and stern, and having a light hearted joker as his best friend was a great foil, and made his arc so meaningful. He dissolved the inquisition and is using the Jennies infrastructure to Co ordinate against Solas. Really neat way to end an arc.

MonarchMKUltra that’s what I based saying that off of. While two snide comments might not be much- it’s some of the harshest things she says to a companion- although some might compare it to her banter to Blackwall after he reveals who he is. She’s wary of Cole and Dorian too, but even then she seems more respectful of them. Sera is just a petty thief who needs a real job, as she says.

Ghil Dirthalen that still seems to be pretty... tame? And honestly she has much stronger reactions to Dorian and Cole and yet their banter later establishes them as friends later on. Not sure about later on but it seems most of the companions gain some sort of respect at the very least for each other despite their differences. I mean, they did fight together. That could be what her banter means and would make sense as to why she mightve seen things before. Its become obvious in the games that spirits can latch into others or be remade but dont always remember. So she could easily been someone who suffered when the veil created, ending up falling into an endless void to her death

For me I liked Sera as she came off one of your skater girl or tongue in cheek chicks and that is important to those who didn't grow up with orthodox or uppity backgrounds . But I suppose those who grew up with ceremonially structured or qunari like backgrounds would strongly disapprove of her being she has no sense of duty or honor or even meaningful discipline. There are those who take that VERY seriously. I also like Solas and Cole as they both have much in common with me. But every now and again we need someone to keep us grounded and make us feel like we do have a place in the world. Your preppy or jock types (at least from my generation) would sneer disgustedly at her character or the mere sight of her. Because she reminds them too much of the 'lowly' freaks they dealt with because they were raised to believe the world is their oyster. And that is my bit.

When I came across her pages in World of Thedas Volume 2 I was shocked by the fact that Emmald, made Sera for a time the wealthiest Elf in Ferelden. Of course, Sera being Sera gave it away to the chantry or assumedly the Ferelden Crown. As there are some other notes/letters referring to the bequeathed. Is difficult to get a hold of for approval concerning some holdings/property. I'll assume at the time that Sera was already trying to get away from Ferelden after the blight. And Thought to herself that she didn't have to worry about all that stuff. Since she pushed it over onto "others"to deal with.

Sera is my second favorite character in the entire series only to Lelliana, and I agree that much like the red-head tempest, there's far more to her than at first blush. She mastered the bow the first time she picked one up (at least the art department gave her the shoulders and back for it, kudos), and seems to have preternatural foresight.
She was my inquisitor's snarky best friend and confidant, accompanying just about every single mission. I adore her.
I hope BioWare does the 4th game well, but given their recent track record and EA's ethical standards resting somewhere around Earth's mantle, I'm not going to hold out much hope of finding anything new about her.

  • @abraxis260482
    @abraxis260482 5 лет назад

For me I think the general idea behind Sera was for her to be everything Solas saw himself as, but wasn't. A kind of a mirror image and refutation of his mission statement. Solas claims to want freedom for his people, but he's unwilling to accept the consequences of freedom and intends to replace it with what came before, only this time under his "benevolent" direction. Sera on the other hand revels in that freedom he sees as antithetical to what being Elven means, and helps people without seeking to control them. She's an arrow in flight, all trajectory and no target while he's all about the target and everything is just a means to that end.
@18:15 Could it be possible that ('as) as a short form suffix could denote that the subject is a location? For example "Vhen'alas" seems to literally mean "(our/the people's) land". The "Vhen" part seems to refer to "(our/the people's)" since it is a component in "Vhenadahl" (tree of the people), "Vhenallin" (friend of the people).
So "Dirthan'as" could mean something closer to "land/place of secrets/place of knowledge" or something to that effect. Also, since elven seems to be poetic at least as often as it's literal this might not refer to an actual place, but a mindset or a figurative place. Like if one were to say "the world of academia" or more appropriate for Solas: "the world of espionage and intrigue". In context meaning pretty much: "I know what I'm talking about", or perhaps akin to "hearken unto me".
If that's the case then the literal translation could be *"I, of (the place of knowledge/secrets of spirits), you sing of(?) (our/the people's) heart."*
Again, taking it poetically instead of literally, and from the context of the statement it seems like Solas is saying he knows Sera has some inherent spiritual sense of what it is to be Elven, to whit she responds with a raspberry...which one could take either way; that she does and doesn't think it matters, or she doesn't and still doesn't care. Her follow up statement "whatever you said and what I did, same difference to me." could support either interpretation. If nothing else, it would be in character for Sera to dislike flowery language over direct speak.

She cannot see herself as a human since she doesn't trust them nor can she convince herself to be anything other than "people" whatever the hell that means in the grand scheme of things. It once again is reflective of what's going on in the world today. People refusing to see themselves as they really are, eager to accept ANYTHING else as preferrable no matter how damaging it will be to their psyche in the long run. So that just leaves Sera with absolutely NOTHING.

I do see sera as more than she is but rather than being like a god or something she’s just an elf that has a more natural affinity for magic that she desperately tries to avoid

Curious. In Origins, Sten seemed to love cookies. Maybe there's no connection... But then again, Sera seems to have a thing for Qunari... and it could just be that the Qunari are some ancient elven experiment gone wrong. Nah, I don't even know where I'm going with this.

    • @eldenipak1763
      @eldenipak1763 4 года назад

There is a theory which saya that the Qunari come from ancient humans (or elves, I don't remember) that have been modified and have succumbed to dragon blood.
(Cassandra comments to a Reaver Inquisitor that dragon blood can totally change those who ingested it, both physically and mentally and, in turn, would serve as a possible explanation for why the Iron Bull possesses the Reaper specialization without actually being it, confirmed by himself).
So it is possible that the ancestors of the Qunari (which they themselves are not sure what they were, according to the Iron Bull) ARE indeed human or elven, but completely changed by dragon blood (That could explain why the Iron Bull likes dragons so much for no apparent reason, perhaps he feels related to them?).
If it was a failed experiment or their own decision, I don't know.

She could be a mage but that part is debunked because it would slip through her like Conner. But she could be something else....

"Anarchist derangement." a term coined by a Tevinter magister when studying untrained mages. their magic often developed in unpredictable and stunted ways, frequently leading to madness.
Sera is certainly not entirely sane... i think she has magic, and deep down knows it, but rejects it with everything she has.
she can use a bow without training, there is that bit with Solas and the breach, Cole's dialogue, and IMO, the most telling is her nightmare of losing he inquisitor and "deja vu" moments. Mages often experience prophetic dreams, and the nightmare.... Demons playing on her fears.

tbh i kept her around only as cannon fodder, she's incompetent and undisciplined to be anything else.
she killed that noble i wanted to interrogate because maybe he could have revealed a larger network of corruption in Orlais.
then i would have executed him of course, together with his accomplices.
but she just skipped all this by killing him and shitted on the Inquisitor's authority, which is totally unacceptable in a fragile startup army like this.

I think one of my sera actually romance the bard
    Of creepy song fame
    (At least in trespasser)

    • @bradtorville5526

No, oddly enough, she rejects Maryden's flirting (the song was meant as a come on to her) as creepy, even destroying her instrument when the damn song is sung enough times. If not romanced by the Inquisitor, Sera ends up with the other oddball in the Inquisition, Dagna, the dwarven archanist.
Maryden ends up being romanced by a human Cole or if he was made more spirit, then he nudges Marden into a romance with Krem. So Maryden could go either way, with a male human Cole or a trans woman Krem. Still, I imagine there's only so much Krem can do with a sock shoved down her pants.

Liked Sera in the beginning, mostly because of how she talks, but she hates everything i stand for, and mostly disapproves of my decisions. I do and say what i like, or think whats right, not what gives me approval, or not. I don't give a flying rats ass about what others think of me. Solas seems to like me though.. however i kinda ignore him most of the time. So i never even get Sera in my play-troughs anymore, much like that stuck-up biach Viv. Sera isn't that useful in battle either, so she is surplus as far as i am concerned... I really love Dorian.. Do a piece on him... much more interesting.. in all respects. Too bad Ashryn, (my PC) cant romance him... no matter how pretty she is...;)

I love sera and I wish the writers were kinder to her. I think she makes sense when she talks, it's a bit scattered but entirely logical but your inquisitior always has to question her n act like she's stupid.
The worst is the dream sequence when you romance her, she's clearly freaking out about a nightmare she's had and there is literally no option that's even remotely comforting. I understand it's supposed to be a fight but come on! let the inquisitior say something remotely comforting jesus

The only thing I don't like about this is that you seem to present sera being quirky and also somehow having the traits of a pre veil elf as somehow mutually exclusive, which I don't believe.

Jonathan Simms That fair, haha. I really tried to hide my bias too!
I just really hate the idea that Sera is something special, like a pre veil elf. I feel her character is so much better as just a modern elf who is quirky.
