You didn't mention how Solas talks about meeting a spirit who had once been the undisputed king of nearly ever land he had discovered? That sounds exactly like what Hybris says, and that further connects Hybris to Shartan.
Hybris (Ancient Greek: Ὑβρις means "hubris") was a spirit (daemon) or goddess of insolence, violence, and outrageous Hybris is the ancient Greek word for Hubris...Hubris is a fancy word for Pride but it is usually used to describe All-Consuming Pride...Hubris was the original word used to describe the sin of Pride.
Don't know if it's relevant but in Polish translation of the this quest the word "Awiergan" is not translated but treated as a proper noun. But I don't know if translator had any instructions from Bioware or that was their own call to not translate it.
Based on his placement in the game as one the most difficult monsters (he's an achievement for a reason) and his boasting of "having a piece of them all" I think he's meant to be so old and powerful that he thinks he's the origin of pride. He's basically a pride demon from before the veil was put up. Which makes him poweful indeed. From the scrolls it looks like he was bound by having aspects of himself put in other bodies??? Idk. But he's supposed to be as big a deal as Gaxkang or Xebenkek
If you adhere to the Black City=Arlathan theory, and "The Black" refers to the Black city, "fragments of every fool who held a throne" could mean Hybris held some of the power from each Evanuris (and possibly the Forgotten ones). Additionally, the missing main source of power could refer to a Foci that has locked away the rest of the Evanuris magic, or Solas'orb specifically since he is most associated with pride. Of course, since Hybris has the sword of Shartan, it is a little unsettling that Solas would allow an agent of his to be consumed by a demon that's linked to his own power. Or maybe not. Felassan didn't have a great ending either.
It's probably not relevant, but when I heard "fragments of every fool who held a throne, here or in the black", I immediately thought of the Divine with her Sunburst Throne, whereas 'in the Black' refers to Tevinter's own Black Divines. This might at least connect to Shartan's sword. Could it be taken literally that the 'source' Hybris possesses literally is the sword he drops?
So having just done this quest again on my most recent playthrough I've come to think what Hybris means is that he's basically the personification of Pride from all beings. The "ones in the Black" refers to the Fade which is supposedly shapeless and empty for demons until human thoughts interact with it. What this could mean is that it feeds of the pride of everything that feels such things. It's effectively the primordial Pride Demon. This lines up with other things he says during his introduction. How it was sealed away and other demons I have no idea, but that's my thoughts on his origins.
I walked away to do something else after I thought the video was over, and was so confused when I heard you crying from my living room lmao. This is such a cool mystery, and Hybris is so intense, he’s giving me Gaxkang vibes (very forbidden-y). A few things I thought were particularly interesting: The “No vial can contain you” thing reminds me of the DAO quest “Black Vials.” Maybe this scholar also sealed those revenants, and these demons were too strong for that method? Or maybe there’s lots of “scholars” like this one? I thought it was p interesting that the 2nd one was able to split itself into 3 to possess 3 bodies. “Truth will hold you” and bits about changing “truth” - This reminds me of magic spells in other media that is more or less knowing the name of something gives one power over it (and really, as far as DA is concerned, knowing the name of a demon would give you an idea of how to deal with it). Maybe the only way these “pretenders” could break the seals is if they changed their nature? Finally, Glandivalis - It says in the codex entry that there isn’t a translation for it, but you can find the word “Glandival” in the song “Where Willows Wail” toward the end: “Ir tela’ena glandival, vir amin tel’hanin.” loosely translated to: “When we could no longer believe, we lost glory to war.” followed by “Ir tela las ir Fen halam, vir am’tela’elvahen.” - “When the Wolf failed/won, we lost the People to war.” (also this is described as a lullaby, and I find these lyrics v strange? lol) Solas also uses it when speaking to Mihris in the Hinterlands: “Ma Halani, ma glandival. Vir enasalin.” which roughly, I take to mean “you help, you believe. Our victory.” (There’s probably a more nuanced meaning that I’m missing lol). According to Dragon Age Wiki, glandival means “To believe,” So I wonder if Glandivalis means “belief” or “trust” or “faith.” I wonder if it refers specifically to faith in one’s leaders? It would certainly be interesting if the blade to end the war that Merrill referred to (if there ever was one) was named for this sort of faith. Tiny things that I can’t string into anything but felt like this was a good place to dump it. B’) Awesome video as always! Well worth the wait!
@@thegreywardenherald8923 If you create another Hawke and go for a Completionist playthrough, just be aware that those fights are tough. I still remember having to focus and beat those enemies. But there's no sense of accomplishment if it's easy.
The pronunciation of Gifre is basically jiv-ruh. :) I think in the case of Bloom, Celebrant and Glandivalis, the connection to the Awiergan questline is that these were once the weapons of heroes, taken by these demons as trophies of a sort. That's my take on it, at least. What I'm most curious about is the meaning of the Scholar's refrains about "truth" in these scrolls. Truth will hold you 1) for that is what truth does, 2) or it is no longer true, 3) or a new truth we will create. I wonder what, if anything, this has to do with the collection of demons you unbind, and/or to Hybris.
Oooh, I love this questline, there are so many intriguing things to mull over that come out of it. I hadn't caught that the Scholar loses his little finger to a new knuckle each time he does it until you read them all out like that, so thanks for that. So! My assumption had always been that the demon you come across at the end is sort of... the physical embodiment of the pride all rulers anywhere have had. Hence why he says he has a piece of all of them. That would definitely include Arlathan, the Golden City likely turned Black. Which means he's very old (and it's kind of amazing it's not that hard to take him down, tbh). How he gets these pieces since he is bound, I am very curious about. Is his power so great that he can manipulate these artifacts into arriving in Kirkwall? Is it the price he demands for anyone who wants to make a deal with him? Also, with how far flung the problems mentioned in the scroll are, I can't help but wonder... why are they all just outside of Kirkwall? Yes yes, I recognize that logistically it's the limitations of the game. But the scrolls and the monsters they had bound are all on Sundermount or the Wounded Coast. Kirkwall has been a hub of activity for many years; were all these problematic people lured to Kirkwall for the Scholar to take down? Did the Scholar originate/abide in Kirkwall, and therefore brought the scrolls with the binding back after he did his work, to safeguard them? Is this Scholar someone random? Are they also potentially connected to Solas, as an agent perhaps? I'm so intrigued! Kirkwall is the hub of so many things; the last great battle between the elves and Tevinter. The likely place the magisters breached the Fade. Something important enough for a varteral to be there (my money is on a den of uthenera somewhere in the mount, like the ones we see in the Masked Empire). The hub of the Tevinter slave trade for generations. The city itself is built to funnel blood into the depths of the city. But there was also a mass amount of sacrifice going on in the Bone Pit--for what? God I hope we go back to Kirkwall some day, I feel like there are still so many mysteries we don't have enough information on. The Band of Three, the Scholar, whoever bound the demon at the top of Sundermount in the first place... As with all Dragon Age things, the discoveries have just begun!
I do wonder about this scholar, it is simply because world building on this scale is not a quick, easy or even doable task but there are countless people in the world of Thedas who have had an important influence on events that we have never heard of. The world is a big place after all, though I am beginning to appreciate all those who are weary of everything being tied to the Elves. hahaha Everyone else really does play second fiddle to them in terms of ancient lore and influence but I guess that is to be expected.
I wondered why that poem was so familiar when you read it. It hits me now that maridan? (Our skyhold bard) says it on a couple of occasions when you return to the tavern
I remember doing this... but damn I think that theory is spot on. I've always thought Solas' mistrust of humans came some somewhere (Maferath). It seemed too deep seated to just be from his followers. It also kinda lines up with my theory of Andraste being the first old god baby (i think first havnt looked in awhile). Solas seems to appear when those are out and about.
Could the Old Ways represent the time of Orlais before the establishment of the Chantry? Like, when the Avaar and Chasind and different tribes had migrated to the areas and settled; but, before Andraste Worship caught on? Those practices held by those who weren't Andrastian or Elvehn; but, held beliefs that existed in the area prior to Tevinter magisters trying to enslave others and force them to worship the Old Gods? Like those Orlesians who remember that they were descended from Nomadic people and weren't always ..well, y'know, playing the stupid game? Solas briefly mentions what Orlais once started out as and his description of it during that time period kind of makes me wonder.
I think Solas has ties to the Orlesians. He acts strangely when asked if he has ever been to a grand ball before after admitting that he enjoyed the experience . I don't think he was caught in a lie; just mad at himself that he let that fact be known.
Could Truth be a Spirit like Compassion? Like the scholar uses blood magic to contact or bind a spirit of Truth to act as a jailer to Hybris and then over time layered the other protections we see in the first three scrolls over the top of that, the missing power could be the spirit of Truth though I can't think on what could have happened to it.
I don't know why, but I've assumed since Trespasser that the Golden City is Arlathan, possibly with the Evanuris still trapped within by Solas when he lifted the Veil into place.
That’s what I think and the empty throne belonged to the murdered member of the pantheon so the magistrates believed that the throne of the gods was empty when it’s true owner was currently trying to survive long enough to get her revenge
Also, didn't Solas say in DAI that he met a spirit that was "every king" and that when asked its name faltered because it had forgotten? I think that is one of the stories he tells you when you ask him for lore (and approval). Hybris may be connected to that spirit? Or be that spirit?
I like to believe that demons and fade spirits collect items of historic relevance. Maybe they relate to the spirit's emotion or maybe they are just pretty baubles. I just think that's a decent way to explain why most unique items in the series are found in places super disconnected from their flavor text.
There are several bits of Elvhen flair in this quest- the buckle, the sword. Other people have tied the thrones in the black back to the Evanuris in their prison in the Fade, and I suspect this is why the devs worked on this quest. Why the devs took the time to make this quest is critically important in theorizing about what this all means... perhaps this was an early nudge towards the direction the series is heading, or a way to place Solas’ agents working through history (as the sword and buckle could have come from him?)
Idk what you're on about. This is, (along with a desire Demon in Act 2) is one of the most difficult enemies in the game. But, like most fights isn't too hard of you go into Act 3 overleveled. That said, great video! Love your vids!
Could it be that the thing of every king that sit on the throne is refering to the champions who earned the blade? Maybe they all made pacts with this demon in order to win

I haven't checked all of the comments for this, but just on whim checked the pronunciation of Gifre, and was told that is to be said Gifray. I know this being silly, but I thought I might help. Two years too late, but here we are.
Why would fulfilling these quests of the scrolls unbind: free from his prison, the pride demon Hybris? The scholar who bound these three different demons with his finger knuckles, was he the one who made these scrolls? If he made them and hid them then his binding had a limit or time limit or flaw. That is why fulfilling the scrolls' quest unbound the demons and Hybris. If the scrolls were not made by the scholar, but by his Enemy to undo the scholar's work, then how was it done? Why is obvious, but how? Who could have access enough to the "Truth" to be able to unravel it? Only someone so close to the Scholar, familiar with every nuance of his art, as to be able to nullify it. Like the scholar's evil twin. It seems unlikely that the scrolls were made by a shadow enemy. The scrolls were the binding and they should have remained hidden or kept safe from prying eyes. Their Truth, when revealed, was the key 🔑 to their destruction. The "truth", hidden, remains "true". The "truth", revealed, is undone: becomes "false". I guess that is the method of binding magic 🎩. If every binding has a scroll, Truth, then just find the scroll and read it to undo the deed. There might be a scroll to release the Evanuris and Forbidden One's from their prisons. The scroll of the making of the Veil?
The whole "demon does things and has a price" thing reminds me of some Berserk plotlines. It rang a bell especially at the achievement "Demon Slayer"... On top of that a 2-handed sword is awarded during this quest??? COINCIDENCE??? Or maybe I'm just reaching for obscure references lol Love the videos btw, keep it up!!!
Is it just me that thinks Hybris looks like a mashup of Hubris and Hybrid? Hubris is more than just arrogance; it is defiance of the gods and a Fatal Flaw in myths. He states that he is made up of pieces... not sure if he means literally, like perhaps he took pieces of Kings (like weapons or finger bones) to make himself. Or conceptually, like he is the pride in all rulers, the little voice that whispers they know what is best for The People He also says, he is Pride with Reason. I find that part very interesting, given Solas' personal quest where his friend, a spirit of Wisdom, is corrupted into a Pride demon (which I thought was an allegory for Solas' own development considering his name means pride). Maybe when he says "face everything" he really means he is both demon and spirit (a hybrid). It is scary because having both sins and virtues is very... human. Maybe not unprecedented, with what we know of Cole.
"Hybris" could simply be an alternate transliteration of the Ancient Greek "ὕβρις", since the letter upsilon (Y, υ; alternatively spelled "ypsilon") can be transliterated as either "u" or "y". For comparison "ψυχή", also written with the letter "υ", is transliterated as "psyche" rather than "psuche".
So, it's been two months since your last lore video, when do you plan on releasing the next one? And have you ever thought of doing one on Andraste? (Still say she was a Dreamer, but that's just me.)
You didn't mention how Solas talks about meeting a spirit who had once been the undisputed king of nearly ever land he had discovered? That sounds exactly like what Hybris says, and that further connects Hybris to Shartan.

"Hybris" could simply be an alternate transliteration of the Ancient Greek "ὕβρις", since the letter upsilon (Y, υ; alternatively spelled "ypsilon") can be transliterated as either "u" or "y". For comparison "ψυχή", also written with the letter "υ", is transliterated
as "psyche" rather than "psuche".
