    As a non smoker , I would grow tobacco plant in my front yard as a symbolic middle finger at the government for the tax they charge. Its your choice to smoke & I don't care. But the price of everything is rediculas these days & most of it is tax.

    Larry,
    I absolutely got to thank you for your frank, informative and well spoken video on growing tobacco. I am a pipe smoker and plan on getting into growing my own tobacco as well, if anything just for the experience. I purchased flue cured tobacco last year and pressed it myself into cakes and it came out great! Now I am going to knock out the middle man and grow the plants myself in 5 gallon buckets. Thanks for the tips

    I attempted to grow my own two years ago... and aside from an aphid infestation towards the end(which infested my hot pepper plants, as well), the growing phase was a success. My plants were in semi-shade and ended up about five feet tall. My major issue was finding a way to shred the leaves once cured... not to mention the curing process itself. What I ended up with was fairly harsh, but still smokable. Note: DO NOT use a food processor to try and shred tobacco!

    Great video & thanks for sharing! I smoke a pipe and have found that I go through much more tobacco than I thought I would and ended up going though all the tobacco that I grew in less than three months. Mid way through winter I ended up having to order some. So to those new to the craft of growing...always grow more than you think you will smoke. Once it cures it weighs considerably less than it does green. It's like wine, if cured properly it only gets better with age so you can never grow too much.

    My processing method is to take a stack of half leaves removed from the stem, fold over the pointy ends then roll it into a tube. Use scissors to cut the tube up then pull apart the pieces, which will be long thin strips. When it is drier rub it between your fingers so the strips roll up into strands...

    Larry, I've really become interested in tobacco for two reasons, first the bartering aspect I don't smoke myself but every other person I know does, and second you mentioned that humming birds love the flowers! I really enjoy watching hummingbirds even though as a child I was terrified of them! They looked like giant "DEATH BEES" to me when I was a kid,LOL! I hate smoking but have always raised tobacco in the garden. It's a beautiful tropical plant that flowers. It is also a medicine, It seems to control pain and itching. Also the rustica variety makes an effective insecticide. Once I used a loader tire as a pot to grow tobacco in. Smoking damages your body but my theory is that growing it in non-radioactive soil reduces cancer risk.

    Those plants look great! I have thought about raising my own tobacco but I live in an apartment. I could grow a couple indoors, I have read online that it will work but not be as good as outdoors, but there is too much money involved with all the lights and the power bill will go up I'm sure and certain people may think I'm growing something else. But your plants look great and I applaud your efforts good sir.

    Great vid, Larry! I got into the same for hobby at first around '06, as a curiosity into the cigar making process. Now I get my seeds out every spring and the garden gets a little bigger every year. =D Only problem is that Texas summer and the lousy soil, but the fix was growing earlier and using rain buckets liberally. I found a great source few years ago with tons of great info on a cuban site about dark tobacco. I saved the pages but the site is gone now. Great hobby and a better money saver!

    Great story. Just one suggestion - before you 'shred' the leaf, you should construct a device to slide each leaf across a stainless tray and against a thin blade. Removing the large vein will get the 'bark' out. Tobacco is a labor intense endeavor. But, the best end product will come from the amount of care given. From cover crop in fall to next years' harvest, always something to do. By the way, we 'prime' our leaves on trimmer string using a leather needle. When tobacco is cured, stems will be very dry. We typically artificially bring it in 'order' so leaf will be supple. Simple then to shave leaf from stem. Eliminate extra wood.

    I've watched a few of your videos before. I congratulate you for your work. I am a pipe smoker. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find pipe tobacco in the country where I am. and that's why I have been struggling to grow my own tobacco for 2 years. But I could not control the fermentation process. My tobaccos that I grew before then either had a very bad taste or got mold. There was a small amount of golden virginia and golden burley tobaccos left from this year's harvest. I started to keep them in a small refrigerator at 30 degrees Celsius in a glass jar 2 days ago. How to make burley and virginia fermented pipe tobacco. I guess they are not much different from smoking tobacco. Can you help with this. Maybe you can prepare a video for the post curing process.

    Thanks for your help Larry. When you take the stem off for long term storage of tobacco, do you make sure the leaves are perfectly dry? Do you keep the leaves sealed in a ziploc or with some air circulation in a box or bag that is not sealed? I'm wondering why mold would not grow if there's moisture present.

    • @larrylhall
      @larrylhall  10 лет назад +2

      No the tobacco needs to be open to the air so you do not get mold! They are easy to rehydrate by carefully putting a leaves in a garbage bag and mist with a spray bottle then close in the morning they will be easy to work with and perfect!
