Yes, I think it's possible. It's not something I've tried in several years though. You ideally want to get some sales within the first 30 days of the book being launched. But perhaps you can generate those sales through organic marketing. Otherwise, my thinking would be to aim to generate some income from other sources if possible to put on ads with low keyword bids. That way, you're less likely to lose money and if $1 turns into $2, then you slowly got a machine that's working while also building your organic rank/sales.
