  • Every summer, we do a few trips to Southern California and the Channel Islands to hunt yellowtail, white seabass, halibut, calico bass, and (if we're lucky) mahi mahi. This year we had some incredible conditions, with visibility up to 80 feet, temperatures up to 76*F, yellowtail to 36 pounds, white seabass to 57 (not shown), calicos to 7.5, and mahi mahi to 29 pounds. Here is a compilation of clips from July to September 2012. All fish were taken while freedive spearfishing and consumed by us, our family, and our friends.

    Excellent video. I grew up working the local charter boats and I used to love free diving off of pyramid. Usually lots of Yellow Tail swimming around..This video really brings back some good memories.... keep em coming !

    Those are soupfin sharks. That clip was of an aggregation of a dozen or more. If you look in the background you'll see a great many more than the two in the foreground. They are a common and generally very docile species in Southern California.

    The giant black seabass shown around the 6:00 mark was definitely not harmed by any diver or spearo. It appeared to have been bitten by a shark or perhaps a sea lion.
    And the fish shown around 6:30 is about a 30 pound white seabass, not a black.

    At that point the fish had already been killed with a knife to the brain. I cut the major arteries in the fish's gills next in order to get as much of the fish's blood out before it's heart stopped beating. Bleeding yellowtail (and most other oily fishes) significantly improves the quality of the meat (I had fresh hamachi sashimi on my mind!).

    My big question is are you using a freediving wet suit or scuba wet suit

    • @BrGr385
      @BrGr385 10 лет назад

      freediving wet suit, forget the scuba suits.
      Freediving suits are soooo much more comfortable, such as the custom made Polo Sub one that this guys is using.
      By the way Polo Sub is probably the best brand in the world when it comes to freediving suits, but their products are pretty expensive because they are tailored on your body and they fit perfectly BUT they tear very easily too...

      Spearfisherman, especially in California are among the most secretive people you’ll find. Rarely will you find someone giving up their spots, especially on RUclips. Try going to a Fathomiers meeting if you can.

    • @prokhk
      @prokhk 5 лет назад

      @@CP-ns5ed The old fish make the most babies and have the best genetics. If a fish takes that long to get to that size, removing them impacts the population way more than keeping small ones.

    • @prokhk
      @prokhk 5 лет назад

      @@CP-ns5ed That's awesome! Not gonna lie I would probably shoot a calico that big if I saw one, but it would weigh on my consciousness.
