Back in the 80s I ran a TZ350 G top end, carbs, expansions, grafted on an RD350 bottom end on the road, the whole lot new including carbs was bought for £200! Yes it had a kick start and a wet clutch. The clutch had beefy springs and a very hard life, the engine actually kicked up and often would tickover. I monoshocked the frame made my own electronic ignition and water pump and fitted TZ body work in Kenny Roberts Yellow and Black....... Fast? urm yea nuts would pass almost anything and on any twisty road it was mental, it ran Castrol R, well had to be done ......this sound track ......memories.........made the commute to work truly epic, sold it to a guy in Madley. If your out there and still alive lol message me.
Awesome...brings back so many memories...I grew up on two wheelers and earned two AMA Expert Licenses in the early 70's in 125cc and 250cc Motocross and was about to hang up my racing boots in '75 when I was a Sr. in H.S. and prepare for Engineering College when my sponsor (Island Yamaha in Merritt Island, Fl.) asked me if I'd like to do some practice laps on a TZ-250 (B) and depending on how it went possibly campaign it for half a season in '75. We went to Sebring and I was one of two other riders to run practice laps and I had the fastest laps (the other riders had road race experience and I did not) so I got a free ride for several races in '75...including Daytona, where I ran in 3 different prelim races and placed 5th in the amateur 250cc final...and had the distinct privilege of being passed by a certain Mr. Roberts on his TZ-700/750 during open practice.
As far as i am concerned there is no better hobby or personal satisfaction on this earth. I wished i lived next door as we would spend alot of time together
Best soundtrack....E-V-E-R. This is an A-List of Iconic Technology - Deltabox (what a work of art/sculpture that perimeter frame), Yamaha Power Valve System (YPVS)...and @ 7:57-8:05 (proof that Gold Chains are still in fashion) AWESOME re-build. Thanks so much for sharing w us!!
Oogah, baby! How I miss watching Kenny Roberts on these old factory Yamaha's! And knee-draggin' in general. Dang, getting old sucks. Beautiful race bike resto!
I remember back when the water cooled 250’s first came out I was at Barney’s Cycle Sales in St Petersburg Fla getting some parts for a Yamaha R5 I had and one of the sales guys that worked there had dropped his 350 racer and needed a new radiator. He showed me the radiator, and the box it came in weighed more than the radiator did. It must have been magnesium because it weighed nothing! These bikes are amazing. Too bad Yamaha doesn’t make them any more.
one cannot properly appreciate the hell going on in there when it is rippin' around the track until you see it from the inside, very well done video indeed...............wb
Love those two strokes. Lots of folks don't realize how much horsepower they produce. Ok, they're down on torque, so what. When you're on the back straight in top gear pushing past 12,000 r.p.m. at 150 m.p.h.+ with only 250 c.c., that's really something!😎
your right on with engines like these with only 3 moving parts they become quite complicated an extremely high technical Marvels that are internally supercharged making boost when they come on the pipe but it wasn't until Kenny Roberts riding for Yamaha showed up with two crankshaft geared together was not one not two not three but four individual YZ125 cylinders and heads loaded on top of those two crankshaft gear together for a full displacement at 500cc was making 400 horsepower per liter
THE ENGINE WOULD LOOK NICE "VAPOR BLASTED". AND IT WOULDNT HURT IN IN ANY WAY. STILL, NICE JOB. I LIKE THE 70'S RACE BIKES, THEY DIDNT HAVE THE SHARP LINES LIKE TODAYS RACE BIKES DO.
I attended MMI in Phoenix back in 2001-02 and the Yamaha class had a TZ250 that Yamaha had given the school. It was a complete and running bike.....well, until one of the Yamaha instructors kept ripping it up and down deer valley road on the back wheel!! So the bike was retired to just being on display in. The classroom and to make sure no one would be tempted to take it for a ride again, administration made him take off the carbs and let admin have them. So the carbs were kept locked up in an office! LoL! It was a cool bike though!
GREAT video! Motorcycle transmissions always "scared" me, I would work on the top end of my different 2 stroke dirt bikes but I was scared to death of the transmissions! Afraid of losing a part or not putting it all back together correctly.
Can't win. Most of the time people complain about the music and want engine sounds. They put in engine sounds and someone complains about the annoying sounds. Fuck off pigeon brain.
"Back In The Day" it always impressed me when a TZ250 would win races against liter bikes at the track. Kocinski would show up and embarrass all of us locals
“Full factory racing bike”? You mean a factory built race bike, just looks like a pretty standard 87 TZ250, nice restoration though. Factory racers were reverse cylinder then production TZs got it in 88 with the U’s
I believe if it was a Factory Works bike it would be a YZR-250,at least 1986-1990.From 1991-1995 the factory bikes were TZ250s again but switched back to a YZR 250 in 1996.The 1987 YZR 250 was the first one to have a 90 degree V-Twin with a single crank.
I really couldve used you guys around when I was replacing the eccentric bolt on my banshee 350 shifter...had a hard time figuring out the correct reassembly and proper adjustment for the clutch rod and had to take it apart multiple times to re-adjust, breaking the tab off on the clutch basket lock washers and idler gear sir clip in the process..was a pure headache but great learning experience for a non-mechanic like myself and she's now ripping through the trails again..2 stroke twins are mythical beasts but I sure dont know why they didnt put a powervalve on the 350 banshee because I'm pretty sure the rd350 has one
Plus it would be more expensive to make. This basic engine configuration has been around since '67 or so, so falling back on their 30+ years of experience when making the Banshee engine, they has to please the bean counters. Besides, how often do you lug around on a Banshee? They arent even awake untill 5,000 rpm, so a powervalve would be useless.
So cool!!! whet did you put on your chain that blue key lock? Never seen that before just had a did chain brake on me one of the golds on ltr 450 and in snapped my renthal sprocket in 100 prices .
I'll try to interpret this post for viewers. What was that blue master link that you put on your chain? I have never seen that before. I just had a chain break at the gold link on my Suzuki LT-R 450 and it snapped my Renthal sprocket into 100 pieces. (For those not familiar with the Suzuki LT-R 450, it is a recreational high performance quad bike.) Shawn , if I have interpreted some things incorrectly, please elaborate in legible English.

BEST TOYS EVER i love the smell of two stroke in the morning....
That’s a beauty. Had an AS3, YR5, RD 350B and a RD350LC. Love the Yamaha, those colours are fab.
You sir are the conductor, love the orchestra! Brings back so many memories of my good old days. ☝️

Some people pick the worst music as an overlay on videos, i don't think a better choice could have been made on this video. Great.
Haha yeah was awesome
It's about fucking time.
Perfect soundtrack and beautiful work - nice!
id pay good money just to watch these guys work!! godbless
Dudes in the 80s and 90s had the creme de la creme ! best bikes ever the 2 stroke era

Then you have not met Filthy Frank or Whitney Wisconsin to name but a few?????
2スト250の市販レーサーはtz250とrs250があったけどアルミデルタボックスを採用したtzは美しい

Entranced. Major talent on display.
Probably the most enjoyable video I have ever watched. Well done 👍
one cannot properly appreciate the hell going on in there when it is rippin' around the track until you see it from the inside, very well done video indeed...............wb
Great video guys. Big 2 stroke fan. Remembering the great days of 2 stroke race bikes, 2 stroke street bikes also.
Two stroke bikes were so amazingly simple compared to the computer controlled monsters we have today. Bring back the two stroke 500’s!
a satisfaction that you can only get from build 1/1 scale "model kit" gp monster . .i really enjoyed this
I love 59w.TZ250 YAMAHA.
I just found the best video ever posted to RUclips.
beautiful piece of engineering

Nice attention to detail, right down to the matching yellow Crocks! (shoes)
Total assembly, nice work filming.
Clearly, you gentlemen know what the heck your doing and highly skilled I might ad. Top shelf gents

Simply one of THE greatest motorcycles ever made! This is a gorgeous example!!! Utter perfection😍😍😍😍 and in the ultimate colours/livery!!!!
Reminded me of Nick Ienatsch and his 250 back in the day
Cara que vídeo incrível. Muito top ver a moto toda em pedaços e sendo montada aos poucos. Ótimo vídeo.
Great video ! beautiful machines.
Guys you work like a pro, thanks to share with us!
Not too sure about your PPE gear but the build was a thing of beauty, top marks.

Você assistiu a mecânica japonesa pessoalmente?
Thank you for a fantastic video, with a fantastic sound track.....
Brilliant. Lovely job.
But what a beautiful thing I was speechless, this bike is in my dreams.
Excellent!!! Good job!!!👏👏👏
@10:38 #racingcrocs I like the effort to colour-match footwear to the bike's traditional Yamaha livery. ;-)
Excellent production we would see each other in a mirror!.🏍
Go on - admit that you had some bits left over when done! Interesting video - thanks for posting.
Wow🔊《☆》👍🔥The intake ports are Massive🔥😎☮
Stunning absolutely brilliant, well done you clever buggers 😀 2 stroke Yamaha's SIMPLES 🏍
Excellent video and soundtrack/song ;)
Thanks for NOT having some EuroTrash Electro Dance Music for the background sounds.
懐かしい。カラーリングも懐かしい。
エンジンがかかった時、あの匂いもしてきたような気がした。
O piloto na pista e mero coadjuvante ,artista mesmo são estes mecânicos .
GREAT video! Motorcycle transmissions always "scared" me, I would work on the top end of my different 2 stroke dirt bikes but I was scared to death of the transmissions! Afraid of losing a part or not putting it all back together correctly.

You have a picture of the team with you?
Hi what's the tool used @ 1:31 ? The one that looked like a plier . Thanks ! Hope to hear from you soon 😀
Beautiful. You need a guard for the chain and rear sprocket though.
You are right, we forgot the shark fin!
linus yes we have seen ..45 years ago...near PARIS...monlhery..autodrome......to have the pilote sex...cut in 2 parts...the seat was also cut
Buen vídeo 👍 y buena maquina 👍
Espetácular, maravilhoso, fantástico.
Amazing Job 😍🔥
Love the background music
Can't win. Most of the time people complain about the music and want engine sounds. They put in engine sounds and someone complains about the annoying sounds. Fuck off pigeon brain.
I'll give you 4K. That sounds like a good deal.:)
Quick coupler for the chain ?

No powervalve, possibly less power on low rew. Quite a few racers prefer powervalve fully open.
