Katelyn James About a year ago I replaced my 7DII with and R. I am not a pro so new RF lenses was too much of an expense for me. But I decided NOT to adapt my lenses, instead they were “naturalized”: I purchased an adapter for each lens. These adapters are never removed. I share your experience, all my lenses are new again. I am definitely not deficient in resolution from my lenses. And the R is 30Mp. Thanks for your video!
Should try out the R5 if it’s in your budget and same price point as the 5Div was back in the day and the R5 is known now as “the photographers perfect camera” and completely blows the 5Div out of the water
Thank you for this great review. After watching some 50 reviews or even more of the R6 I found yours to be very refreshing and informative. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Germany!
@Chelsea Uren If you are not shooting fast moving subjects and don't need the fast burst speed you can save money by buying EOS R. Some actually think that it's a better camera than R6, but I think R6 is slightly better. It's the R5 that gives the real resolution and dynamic range improvement over those two models. So EOS R would be a nice choice for you to consider.
It was nice to see a real photographer that uses Canon DSLRs for a living review the R6. I was tired of watching videos that would compare between brands. I just wanted to know how the R6 compared to and actual full frame DSLR. Than you for this video. You have convinced me to go ahead with my R6 purchase.
Similar thoughts here except I have a 90d (crop sensor) which is 32mp. My main concern is going down to a 20mp camera (very strange decision on canon’s part I think). I’ve watched so many videos and it’s my main worry but maybe full frame will be fine. It’s a big decision to regret! I hope you got yours and are enjoying it
I was considering upgrading from Canon DSLR to the Mirrorless R6, and honestly This review is 100% hands-down a confidence boost into jumping right into getting my own canon R6. Your entire presentation was absolutely spot on and exactly the questions I had. This review should be considered as the Perfect 30 minute commercial for the canon EOS R6. 🙌🙌
@@KatelynJames yes Absolutely! My wife watched your review last night. And she said she should get one. She barely takes photos but, she said “with this camera how can I miss a great photo?!”
For shooting with flash (or strobes) particularly in dark situations as you mentioned in the video, you need to disable *exposure simulation* to not have a black viewfinder (or LCD). I actually assign that to a custom shooting setting (C3 for me) so I can switch right to it.
@@KatelynJames Lots of places to configure that control to - perhaps reprogram the DOF button on the front for that? I've read other wedding photographers have done that.
Upgraded from 5DMk3 (purchased in 2012) to the R6 (October 2022) i was so nervous to use it that i didn't touch it for 2 weeks!!! I went on a trip and left my Mk3 at home to force myself to learn the R6. Spent 2hrs watching videos on how to use it and set it up and the results were amazing!! Watching this video made me even more confident in the R6 because we had a similar experience!!! Love your content
I just bought the R6, upgrade from my 6D mark ii and I’m so excited. Like when you mentioned you took less photos because of confidence you had the perfect shot! I feel like most of my time is usually wasted sorting through thousands of photos because the 6D sucks at focusing.
I use to do about 60 wedding a year. I do about 20 now but I do about 80-90 seniors a year. Thank you for this video. It is so refreshing to see an actual photog walking the talk.
Just got my first R6 and this was a great video, I’ve been sick since I got it and wondering if I have made the right decision and watching this has made me feel so much better! Thanks!
I'm a slow adopter when it comes to technology, so this was SO helpful to hear from your perspective! I have been very curious about using my current canon prime lenses, and so the fact that I can makes this a game changer. Really useful & helpful information! Especially regarding focusing, low light, and lenses. Thank you, thank you!
I am a slow adopter too! When I went from film to digital in 2002ish, I was kicking and screaming. But honestly, it saved me a ton, and was much faster (I shoot youth sports, and I use to have to spend all the next day in the darkroom, and I would waste so much film! Even the older bodies like the Canon 10D and the 300D (original Rebel) had better low light capabilities than the ASA film I used (800 for colour and T-Max 3200 for Black and White). Any colour image was less noisy with the digital bodies of a decade and a half ago than film! I am hoping I will be wowed like that when I go mirrorless for the '22 season
I just purchased my new R6, and at the same time got a job to shoot a wedding. I have not had the time to completely learn everything on this camera so I was very happy to see you post this great video.
I’m so happy to see you excited about this now! You can sense it as you watch. If you rent the RF 70-200, you will LOVE it! I thought that I wouldn’t want new lenses until I tried that one. I’d love to see you try it out.
I find this video as overall best demonstrated video out of all the other R6 videos out there. A big thanks for helping me having a clear thought to opt for this camera.
Been using mirror less for years now. It has finally lived up to it’s potential. Being able to see how the picture will look before taking the photo is key along with the amazing focus capabilities these cameras have.
WOW, I've been watching dozens of videos on RUclips to decide if I should upgrade from my 5D MKII and 80D to the mirrorless ecosystem. By far, BY FAR.... This is the most down to earth review of the R6 that I've seen. Thank you Katelyn for such a great video, understanding how the R6 changed your workflow cleared up a lot of questions I had regarding the Canon mirrorless ecosystem.
I was super excited to watch this video of yours! Congrats on the R6! It was great to see how happy you were with your camera, and knowing that you had advantages that you didn't know you missed with the 5D Mark IV. I'd be curious to know in what position you will be in after 6 months or a year after owning this camera. Will you retire your 5D Mark IV, or will you still keep it as backup? Would love a follow up after some time! Great video! I preordered my R5 after launch and I'm still waiting for it. Luckily, Canon let me test it out, but I had to send it back. Now I'm super excited to get my hands on it! You're the best, Katelyn!
Great video! When I got my EOS R (upgraded from my Mark iii) the only time I’ve ever had to focus and recompose is when my camera is underwater and I don’t have the time with wrestling the case to get to the touch screen. It’s so wonderful to never have to focus and recompose again!
Nkiruka Herche sure it’s just an EOS R with a 24-70 and an Outtex underwater skin. They kinda are like the wetsuit company for cameras and they are a much cheaper alternative to the dedicated housings while still being safe for your camera. I’ve had it for two months now and used it on 8 underwater shoots and it’s great however you can’t really reach the touchscreen super frequently so it’s easier to just put the focus point in the middle then focus and recompose like in the DSLR days.
Thanks for a real world view. Everything sounded sincere. That gained a Follower. Thanks for pointing out the full card thing 9:10. That was very interesting and something I haven't heard from anyone else and I have watch a lot... I mean A LOT of reviews!
Rent the Canon RF 28-70 f/2.0, you will be amazed at the images. The lens is remarkable! I bought one for my R5 and the IQ is exactly like a prime lens. B &H will deliver my canon RF 85mm 1.2 tomorrow, looking forward to using that beast at my next wedding.
Katelyn James once you try it out it will be interesting to hear what you think a put it. Got myself the 28-70 only a few weeks ago. It’s definitely the best and most versatile lense especially for Portrait and events. Besides the price which it’s definitely worth it, the only real downside is the weight. I got used to it pretty fast but others may find it uncomfortable so you should definitely try it out. A hand strap is a recommendation for this
Congratulations on your new camera Katelyn! Upgrade your lenses and buy some native RF glass. Well, at least the new RF 50mm f1.2. You will love it! Since I switched to mirrorless, I'll never buy another DSLR!
13:24 I think a lot of people use smaller (64GB ish) cards for their main card and a larger 128/256/512 GB backup card. You would just swap out the smaller main cards and leave the larger backup in the camera unless you need it.
Thank you so much! I ordered the R6 - coming from a crop sensor. I thought about the MarkIV but decided going mirrorless. I have a wedding on Thursday and picking up the R6 tonight. Can't wait! You reinforced my decision ☺️👏🏻
This review made me emotional, wow truly reminded me how much down to my core, how much I love wedding photography and photography in general. I’m saving for this R6 this summer upgrading my absolute beloved 5DMk2 but it’s wayyy overdue for an update 🥺🙏🏽📸 Awesome review!!
I changed my system from 2x Canon 5D Mark IV to two Sony a73. I was soooo speachless hoch much better the sonys are for my workflow and my weddings. Two weeks ago i got my Canon R5. And now i am Back to canon. Dont get me wrong ... Sony is as much powerfull as a tool like Canon. But boy oh boy it makes soooo much more fun making pictures with a canon. Sony always feels like i am working. With canon i have FUN ! And holy moly i missed those incredible colors of canon. There are situations where you cant tell the difference. But than there are some where you can tell the difference from the scratch. Maybe i am a Canon fanboy ... maybe not. But i love my R5 sooo much more.
I have heard the batteries in general are an issue for the R series. Namely b/c you are utilizing the video screen 100% of the time, so this is I believe is going to be the norm, and not the batteries. I am so hesitant. Glad you liked it overall. I don't think the 20mp thing is an issue. Let's face it - shooting RAW, it really won't matter. I have 2 5D3 and a 6D. I don't think I will need to get anything new for a bit, but at least when I am ready, I will feel a little more ok about it all!
Lena Messana the last wedding I shot with my R and grip I had over 1000 shots and still had 30 percent. Now with the R5 I am still seeing the same type of numbers. I have not run out of power yet on any shoot. I also love that you can charge the battery in camera
My personal experience with an RP: it definitely drains battery faster than your average DSLR, due to the sensor being active the whole time + screen etc. so depending on your usage you may get a pretty short usage duration. But you can increase that by a lot if you for example activate eco mode, which shuts off the screens only seconds after you stop using the camera. Not having the screen run the whole time increases the usage time up to 1000 shots. So you can have the long usage time if you are just aware of this
Really like your video and glad you are enjoying your new camera. I switched to mirrorless for 1 wedding season a few years ago with the fujifilm xt1, I work in manual mode all day. When i got to the inside photos 1/200th ISO200 f5.6 (to make the ambient light disappear) I used flash and realized the viewfinder was pitch black due to the electronic viewfinder, switched back to a DSLR and never tried mirrorless again. I am glad you mentioned this problem in your video.
What would you say is the highest Iso you would use an R6 for weddings without getting too much noise ? I don't like pushing my 5DIII over 3200 Iso, which is sometimes a problem at parties (I do have a lot of f1.4 glass though)
I also worked at ISO 12800...what can I say except that it's an amazing camera. I did some portraits at ISO 40000 during the wedding and did a print on 13x18cm and A4, amazing. Try it, don't be afraid. Especially since today's software with Ai solves everything flawlessly. The new Adobe Lightroom gives you the possibility to not really think about the ISO value. For wedding work, 12800 and beyond amazing. The EOS R6 is an amazing camera, really.
I’m just starting out with photography and am about to purchase my first camera. What are you thoughts on starting out with the Canon EOS RP mirrorless camera?
I'm trying to start a photography business after one being a hobbyist off and on for years. I decided to get the RP as I'm not doing weddings and can risk the single card slot. I also wanted to start being able to invest in RF glass. I've been very, very happy with the images I get from that and I can't even use my EF lenses yet because of the adapter backorder. My kit had the 24-240 for cheap. I also have the RF 50 1.8, which is great and a Samyang 14mm 2.8
If you are starting out and know you are serious about photography I would buy the best you can afford. I would also be tempted to buy a pristine condition second hand 5D Mkiii or iv, there are plenty about due to a few people upgrading to R5. Other than that, the R6 would be perfect as Canon cameras are not difficult to operate as long as you watch plenty of RUclips tuition videos. Learn the important photography standards and the camera will be easy to set up.
Quick question… two years later. How do you feel about this camera now? Do you still have it or have you changed? I’m debating between the r6 or r5. Obviously I need to keep the cost down but I don’t want to sacrifice too much if photography has changes so much in 2 years. Thanks for any advice 😊
My R6 is arriving today and i´m sooooooo excited! Watching R6 reviews for the last days and my excitement for this camera is getting bigger and bigger! Thank you so much for this real life review! 🥰
This was the best review for my needs. I thoroughly enjoyed your view point from a true photographer's point of view, rather than focusing on all the tech stuff. I'm still debating over the R5 or R6. I can truly feel your excitement over this camera; it felt genuine.
A few reasons! The R5 is $1,100 more expensive, uses new (very expensive) memory cards that I would need to invest in and it has more megapixels that will just take up unnecessary HD space!
I have had the EOS R since it came out 2 years ago and have had the R5 for about a month. I have a few suggestions on settings, in which you may be interested: 1. Since getting the R5, I changed to using cRAW. FIle size is about half of RAW and you will not be able to tell the difference. ie. Need less SD card memory and less HDD space. 2. If you have the adapter with the control ring, or an RF lens, then the default setting for this ring (on the R5) is for Exposure Compensation, but requires the shutter button to be pressed to activate the function. I changed the setting so it does not require the shutter button to be pressed first. So my default mode is Manual, but with Auto ISO. Hence if I need to change the selected ISO value I can either use the control ring for Exposure Comp or manually set ISO using the ISO dial (which by default is the Quick Control Dial on the R5). 3.There are 3 custom Mode buttons (ie. C1, C2 and C3). I have these set up as 3 common conditions I regularly use and when you include M mode there are actually 4. So one of these is for when I use flash indoors and it is too dark to be using it as fill flash. In this case the ExpSim is deactivated (ie Exposure Simulation which Katelyn described) and viewfinder brightness stays the same regardless of room lighting. For all other modes I have ExpSim enabled. I have one custom setting for cases where I intend to use fill flash and People/face recognition with eye detect, another for fast moving subjects with animal eye detect and another with fast moving subjects with zone autofocus. These are just examples to give an idea of the flexibilty of the customization possible. You need to decide if you want the camera to remember changes you make to custom settings. ie. If you turn the camera off and back on, do you want the settings as you stored them or as they were when you last turned the camera off. 4. You will need the camera in hand to understand this suggestion. For the fill flash setting (ie my custom setting above) the camera will not work as you would hope, so I have a workaround until Canon hopefully releases a firmware upgrade. The ExpSim icon and histogram in the viewfinder are grayed out, when the flash is attached and on, but they are still essentially working, until you press the shutter button half way (or AF ON button), at this point the camera acts as if ExpSim is disabled (std brightness viewfinder) until the exposure metering timer (default of 8s) expires and then the viewfinder reverts to the grayed out histogram etc. The workaround I mentioned involves pressing a button which will cancel the 8s metering timer, causing the ExpSim condition to return to the viewfinder. I found 2 buttons that will cancel the timer, but you have to press them twice. ie. "Play" and "Mode". There are probably other buttons you could use and you could also customize a button, but pressing the Mode button twice is quite easy. 5. The joystick is not set up to move the AF point across the viewfinder, by default. You need to set it up yourself. Having done that, pressing the joystick will center the AF point. The SET button can now be reassigned, because it also defaults to centering the AF point. I reassigned the SET button to display the Drive Modes, so I can quickly change these settings. My point is that there is a significant amount of customization available on these cameras. In most cases if you don't like the choice Canon made for a button or dial you can probably change it to something you prefer.
For suggestion 4 above, the Mode button is not an option for the R6, since it uses a Mode dial. However, I just did some tests to find out a few other buttons that will achieve the same thing. So in addition to the Play button, there is the Q button and if you configure the SET button like I did it can also be used. Also, I turn off the Auto Preview in both the back LCD panel and the Viewfinder. You may want to leave one of them on for flash photography, but it becomes very annoying in the viewfinder if you are taking a lot of photographs in succession. You will become very confident you nailed the shot because of the ExpSim feature, as long as you take a sequence of shots to cover the case of people blinking etc. Just do a manual check every now and then. The reason I disable Auto Preview on the back LCD panel is to conserve battery.
Great RUclips vid...Nicely done. Your on camera skill set is very nice to watch and learn from. My better half and myself just last week received our 2, not one, r6's. One for her and me...lol. Ouch, said my wallet. My better half is jumping up from her t5i and me from fuji xt2. I was really concerned that it would not be as sharp as the fuji. I was pleasantly surprised as to the sharpness of this gem of a camera. Your wedding experience with the r6 is a great reference for anyone aspiring to do wedding photography. As always, keep up the good work and keep'em flying....
I have a similar setup with my dials, one difference though, I use the M-Fn button to switch from the back screen to the viewfinder and I have the ISO set up to my control ring dial. Smooth, quiet, and fast!
I just bought one and we got a R for my wife. basically we changed from our DSLRs to Mirrorless. our first wedding with the R6 and R will be 10-10-2020.
Nice. Just a tip: you may probably use the face detection in combination with servo. There is an option somewhere in the advanced menu that lets you activate the regular focus rectangle while using that combination. This way you can point at something or a face and the camera will specifically start to track it once you half press the shutter. In contrary in regular face tracking mode the camera may potentially track a person/face you dont want to. This can easily happen when your at an event and have many people in the scene. So activating this option combines both worlds and give you the chance to actually selecting your target (without having to adjust it via the touchscreen)
I really loved your video. I've been wanting to move to mirrorless for ages but I couldn't bring myself to buy a new system. I am glad Canon came up with great options now. I am definitely purchasing one soon.
jvhphoto 20mp is more than enough. People underestimate the pixel count. Many professional cameras have 12MP which is also enough. 20mp actually give the R6 a low light and noise advantage over other cameras with a higher pixel count like the R, the R5 or the RP
Glad to see you switch to mirrorless. I skipped the 5D Mark IV and went straight to the EOS R. Never regretted it. It is fun slowly replacing all the EF lenses with the newer, and better, RF lenses.
After watching this video I came , almost, to the point of logging into my Prime account and order this camera... almost, but, yeah, first time viewer, very infomative presentation
Hi Katelyn! If you have time to answer some questions on different settings and techniques you are now using with the R6 that you don't use with the 5D MkIV (thinking your techniques on One-Shot v. AI Servo v. Manual for example) or comments you would include in your Lighting and Location class specific to the new R6 that would be great! Currently enrolled in your wonderful class, learning a ton, but I also just invested in the R6 so want to know if anything new changes those lessons learned!
Great video and great camera. My only concern are the 20MP - Coming down from the 30MP the 5D Mark IV had do you still feel the images are as sharp on the R6 when looking at them in Lightroom? Also do you feel like you can do some cropping and retain crispness as in the mark iv? I have an EOS R (same 30MP sensor as 5D mk IV) and would like to upgrade but this is the only thing that worries me.
I’ve had the R for two years and I rented the R6 this weekend for a wedding. I had the same concern but I did an a/b compare with the same shot using both cameras and darn if the 6 wasn’t a little cleaner and sharper. First glance through the raws from the wedding, the images look fantastic. The two issues I had were to my eye, the EVF wasn’t as sharp as my R was. It drove me nuts. I kept trying to adjust the diopter, but I couldn’t quite get it. Totally useable, but not as tack sharp as the R. So i wonder if it’s just not as good or the one I had. Also as she mentioned in the video I tore through 4 batteries on the day which was surprising. Luckily I had four batteries but I thought I’d only need 2 maybe 3.
Hey Katelyn, thank you so much for sharing this info! I just bought my R6 and am shooting my first wedding with it this weekend - this was such a helpful confidence booster for me to hear about the issues you encountered, and what you loved about it. Thank you SO much!
I've found mirrorless autofocus to be awesome in really low light. Especially in the dance floor. In a lot of low light situations even my dinky little X‐T20 was noticeably faster focusing than the 5D IV
Awesome videos Katelyn 😊 I’ve helped second shoot a couple of weddings in past years and recently decided to purchase my first camera and gear! Been watching all kinds of videos to educate and grow my photography skills and I stumbled upon your channel and I love your knowledge you share and personable style! Hope to learn more from your channel ❤️
Hi Katelyn, I am so lucky that I find your channel. I just started photography for half year, I love the way you explained everything , thank you very much! 👍
Really enjoyed your very practical and enthusiastic review. I think if, by inference, you were overshooting by 2,000 images with the 5Div, then something was very wrong with your previous set-up. Not an issue anymore perhaps, but I find the 5Div (like all previous 5Ds) very accurate and easy to use. Some of it may be to do with using f1.2 lenses at their widest setting, where focus is ultra-critical and that the focus system on the R cameras provides advantages (face detect and eye detect) that the SLRs couldn't match. Good luck with your mirrorless investment.
Thanks for this review! I’m ready to move into a full frame, professional camera and was considering the Mark IV. I hesitated bc, well the entire industry is changing! This video has really helped me settle the internal debate I’ve been having!
Omgsh I almost can’t believe that you spoke to one of my biggest frustrations, my 50 mm, in my case, on my Canon Mark 3. The images I’ve been getting are so fuzzy, I’m happy to know it wasn’t just me! Excited about upgrading!
Loved this, thank you! Wondering if it's mostly because it was mirrorless that it was awesome, or that specific model? How is it different from the R5, or Nikon? Using a crop sensor Nikon currently and planning ahead.
I just switched to the canon are six from the Nikon D8 tens. You can set up the dials so it’s really similar to Nikon so it was a super easy switch for me
Jackie Siggard Photo & Video I also switched to the R6 from Nikon. I used the D600 for 8 years so this is definitely a step up! Nikon seems to be loosing people right left and center, which is sad because I really like them!
Wow thank you so much ♡ This has helped me so much because I was thinking of getting the 5D mark iv but after researching and watching your video I’m leaning more towards the EOS R6 ♡ this was so helpful
Welp - I was going to wait until Black Friday to order this...but looks like I'm going to order it today and attempt to patiently wait for it to restock!
Congratulations on your new camera! I pre-ordered the EOS R5 as soon as possible (5am on the day it was announced), it came in on a Thursday night and I shot a wedding with it the next morning (July 31st). I already transitioned from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R about a year ago so adapting to the EOS R5 was easier with that previous EOS R experience. I'm planning to do a video by the end of this month on my experience transitioning from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R and now the EOS R5. Battery life is probably the biggest adjustment but now that I'm mirrorless I'm never going back to DSLR. I have had the *temperature warning* icon show up on the EOS R5 while only shooting stills, it happened during at least 4 wedding so far on both of my EOS R5 bodies and I found that I need to power them off when not actively shooting. When I power them off I can get through a whole wedding day. The new firmware seemed to help a little but when I did a corporate headshot job last week I got the *temperature warning* icon after only about 30 minutes. Yes, there are little quirks and adjustments going from DSLR to mirrorless but it is definitely the future and that's why I would totally recommend it to anyone.
I always have resistance when new things come out on the market, just because I know and love what I have. This video was so helpful! I will definitely be saving up! Question- how was it editing and making sure Michael’s images from his Mark “matched’ yours? Was it easy to make the gallery look cohesive? I worry since I like having a back up camera but I won’t be able to afford to get two mirrorless cameras. Also, if there is no view area in top that shows you your settings, how do you know what your ISO, etc. is? Also, seeing how easy it is to change your Kelvin makes me super happy!
You can see the ISO setting in both the viewfinder and on the back screen. In fact you can also see the histogram in the viewfinder, if you want that. There are several options you can turn on and off for viewing info in both the back screen and viewfinder. You can cycle through various screen displays, that you have previously setup, using the Info button.
This camera is not just a new camera. This is the future. Like dinosaur vs the future. Basically you just focus on photography. This camera does the rest. It’s night and day.
Awesome, two questions: what kind of SD cards did you buy and also why did you get the R6 and not the R5? I am trying to decide which one is better... thank you 😊
I think I'm sold! I too am a Mark IV lover and disciple but am ready to turn the corner toward tomorrow's technology and could find tremendous benefit to have gear features that allow me to work more efficiently and creatively. Thanks for your comprehensive video and candor! Best!
Just heard your podcast episode with Nathan and just wanted to come back on here and tell you I also bought the R6 because of this video! 😂 I just wanted a straight forward wedding photography related review of the camera and you delivered! Thank you!
Great informative video -- thanks! I have the EOS R, and I was wondering if you set your exposures by using the meter in the viewfinder or if you are judging your exposure by looking at the image in the EVF?
I've had the r6 preordered since July and still haven't gotten it :( But super excited for when I do. For the next video, I'm super interested in seeing the setup and settings. Also, what you said about the dynamic range cutting down on bright whites is somewhat alarming to me since I shoot light + airy newborn portraits on a bright white background. It would be super helpful to hear more about this. Thanks!
You can cancel that order my dear. I am going through - www.camerainthepost.com/Cameras/Canon/Canon+EOSR6+Mirrorless+Digital+Camera+Body.html . Its cheaper and in stock - will be in your hand within a week.
This is a great video. I work as a photographer at a state university. For work I use a 5D mk IV. I know this camera inside and out and enjoy using it. That said, for personal work I bought a EOS RP last year to try out mirrorless. It was amazing how much the AF tech has changed. I just recently bought a EOS R. It is a true 5D mk IV mirrorless camera. I was able to buy it for a crazy good price and enjoy using it so much. I agree entirely that mirrorless is the way to go if you are starting out. It is possible to buy a great mirrorless camera for a fair price and use any Canon glass in front of it.
Thanks for this review Katelyn. I've spent a bazillion hours researching cameras over the last few days. You convinced me to get the Canon R. I was also looking into the Mark IV so it was really nice to get your perspective. On another note, would you do a video on your work room and where you got the cabinets etc from? It looked so bright and pretty in there. :)
You can turn off exposure compensation within the viewfinder so you can still see what you’re looking at when using flash. You can set a button or my menu setting to quickly access it and then turn it off afterwards.
Loved this! I’m so curious to get my hands on mine because I felt like the EOSR was a HUGE learning curve. The coloring was really difficult to match my Mark iii and I struggled with the viewfinder/screen switching giving me a little bit of motion sickness. It is super sharp. I’ve enjoyed it the more I used it but I’ve had to practice a lot. I haven’t heard anything similar from people with the R6 (and I did from other people with the EOSR) so I’m happy about that!
Not sure if anyone else has brought this up, and you very well might know this, but the reason your 50 mm was sharper on the R6 could be that you may need to calibrate the lens for the 5DM4. Mirrorless lenses use the sensor to focus so there's never a need to calibrate for a mirrorless camera, but DSLR's use the sensor and lens. So the lens might front or back focus on the DSLR but be perfect on the mirrorless. Glad you're enjoying the new setup! Even though I'm a nature photographer, I thought this review was very helpful! Might replace my 7DM2 with it!
Oh, I look forward to this one! I got the R6 as my first camera, and I have been watching a lot of your videos to just learn stuff. I'm a novice at this. I just wanted a decent camera better than my phone. But I might do weddings or something for fun if it comes up. Just a hobby for me. I love all the info!
Thanks for watching! Please leave comments with any additional questions you'd like to see answered in future videos!

This is outstanding, I can hear your joy as you talk about the camera from a photographer’s prospective instead of a reviewer.
Thanks, I really do love it!
Glad it was helpful! You will love it!
I hope you got yours and are enjoying it
Agreed! Not many touch into workflow as well. Shoot 50 pics and do a comparison vs do a real shoot and talk about the entire workflow. Big difference
Glad I could help!
Thanks for the tip, I'll have to try that!
Just ordered my R6 and just getting myself pumped up with video's like yours haha, can't wait to recieve it after hearing your review!
So excited for you Joy!!
If you turn off exposure simulation I believe that will solve your flash problem with the viewfinder!
Jacob Rohr thanks! I’ll try that!
@@KatelynJames Lots of places to configure that control to - perhaps reprogram the DOF button on the front for that? I've read other wedding photographers have done that.
My mouth DROPPED when you said 12,800 ISO - it looked SO GOOD. I'm getting this camera tomorrow and I'm SO EXCITED! Thanks for the review.
OMG haha I literally said out loud five times "OH! I love that!" I just got my R6 and am about to use it. Thank you for sharing!
Glad I could help!
Thanks for watching!
It’s nice listening to the editing while shooting thing that you said. That’s what it’s all about. It’s the future.
Totally the future!!
Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching!
Glad it was helpful!!
Hope it was helpful Lawrence!
I’m so happy to see you excited about this now! You can sense it as you watch.
If you rent the RF 70-200, you will LOVE it! I thought that I wouldn’t want new lenses until I tried that one. I’d love to see you try it out.
Can't wait!
Hi Heather, can you share how the 70-200 is better than a 35mm and 85mm?
I find this video as overall best demonstrated video out of all the other R6 videos out there. A big thanks for helping me having a clear thought to opt for this camera.
Glad it helped!
Predictably, one loves the new mirrorless. The focus, the EVF, etc. are just things that make your life so much easier.
So good!!
I just got my new Camera. So excited to learn and thank you for feedback!
Thanks for watching!
Been using mirror less for years now. It has finally lived up to it’s potential. Being able to see how the picture will look before taking the photo is key along with the amazing focus capabilities these cameras have.
It is amazing!!
Glad it was helpful! RUclips can be a hard place to find helpful videos!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks to this video I pull the trigger on the R6 for my weddings, now Im getting 2 more R6s , Thanks for the video.
Glad I could help
Great video! When I got my EOS R (upgraded from my Mark iii) the only time I’ve ever had to focus and recompose is when my camera is underwater and I don’t have the time with wrestling the case to get to the touch screen.
It’s so wonderful to never have to focus and recompose again!
Underwater? Amazing! Can you tell me more about that setup?
Nkiruka Herche sure it’s just an EOS R with a 24-70 and an Outtex underwater skin. They kinda are like the wetsuit company for cameras and they are a much cheaper alternative to the dedicated housings while still being safe for your camera. I’ve had it for two months now and used it on 8 underwater shoots and it’s great however you can’t really reach the touchscreen super frequently so it’s easier to just put the focus point in the middle then focus and recompose like in the DSLR days.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for a real world view. Everything sounded sincere. That gained a Follower. Thanks for pointing out the full card thing 9:10. That was very interesting and something I haven't heard from anyone else and I have watch a lot... I mean A LOT of reviews!
I appreciate that!! Glad it was helpful!
Yes! We need to rent some RF lenses, but they are so expensive!!
A hand strap is a recommendation for this
I just order the r6 and it's coming in a couple of days, seeing this video made even more excited ☺️
Hope you enjoy it!
Fantastic to see the influence of this camera on your way of working, and in detail, so I really understood what you mean
Glad it was helpful!
I’m actually planning on buying R6 the way you say “I love my camera” at the beginning had me smiling from ear to ear
I really do love it!!
Congratulations on your new camera Katelyn! Upgrade your lenses and buy some native RF glass. Well, at least the new RF 50mm f1.2. You will love it! Since I switched to mirrorless, I'll never buy another DSLR!
Thanks friend! We love it!!
13:24 I think a lot of people use smaller (64GB ish) cards for their main card and a larger 128/256/512 GB backup card. You would just swap out the smaller main cards and leave the larger backup in the camera unless you need it.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much! I ordered the R6 - coming from a crop sensor. I thought about the MarkIV but decided going mirrorless. I have a wedding on Thursday and picking up the R6 tonight. Can't wait! You reinforced my decision ☺️👏🏻
Glad I could help!
Ure risking to do a wedding with a camera you will be 90% not expert with in just 2 or 3 days from the date you get it. Really...
This review made me emotional, wow truly reminded me how much down to my core, how much I love wedding photography and photography in general.
I’m saving for this R6 this summer upgrading my absolute beloved 5DMk2 but it’s wayyy overdue for an update 🥺🙏🏽📸
Awesome review!!
Thanks so much Alex!!
Nothing wrong with being a Fanboy!!
Awesome, because of you...I've bought my new Canon R6......thank you !!! I love it.
Great to hear! It's the BEST!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for watching!
I told you!!!!! So glad you like it. I had the same reaction. And this one is so improved from the original R. The dials are more similar to the 5D. 🥰
I love it!
Go for it. Though that's giant step giving that you said you're just starting out. Not sure I'll spend that much to start out. Goodluck
I am also just starting out and plan on getting the R6 with the 24-70 RF lens.
I am not familiar with it
Quick question… two years later. How do you feel about this camera now? Do you still have it or have you changed? I’m debating between the r6 or r5. Obviously I need to keep the cost down but I don’t want to sacrifice too much if photography has changes so much in 2 years. Thanks for any advice 😊
I’d love to know all of the factory settings that you changed!
There is a video coming soon!
My R6 is arriving today and i´m sooooooo excited! Watching R6 reviews for the last days and my excitement for this camera is getting bigger and bigger! Thank you so much for this real life review! 🥰
Hope you enjoy it!
Great advice, we both have 5D mk3’s and thinking of getting a mk4 at some point. However the R6 is going to be our new choice of body 😃
Totally agree!
Don't you want to buy my 5D mk4?? (just got the R5)
P.S. Really - it is for sale.
This was the best review for my needs. I thoroughly enjoyed your view point from a true photographer's point of view, rather than focusing on all the tech stuff. I'm still debating over the R5 or R6. I can truly feel your excitement over this camera; it felt genuine.
Thanks!! I really do love it!
Why did you decide on the R6 over the R5? I am currently looking to upgrade my cameras.
A few reasons! The R5 is $1,100 more expensive, uses new (very expensive) memory cards that I would need to invest in and it has more megapixels that will just take up unnecessary HD space!
@@KatelynJames but dont you get more detail in higher megapixels?
jvhphoto only on a billboard. The R6 is very sharp.
This lady’s energy is very calming. Subscribed.
Thank you!!
I have had the EOS R since it came out 2 years ago and have had the R5 for about a month. I have a few suggestions on settings, in which you may be interested:
This is very helpful thanks Bruce!!
I just bought the R5. I'm also a new photographer and still learning. I'm SUUUUPPPER green! Following my passion and loving every minute of it!
That is awesome!
I am on the same boat as you. How has it been going for you so far with your r5?
Great RUclips vid...Nicely done. Your on camera skill set is very nice to watch and learn from. My better half and myself just last week received our 2, not one, r6's. One for her and me...lol. Ouch, said my wallet. My better half is jumping up from her t5i and me from fuji xt2. I was really concerned that it would not be as sharp as the fuji. I was pleasantly surprised as to the sharpness of this gem of a camera. Your wedding experience with the r6 is a great reference for anyone aspiring to do wedding photography.
As always, keep up the good work and keep'em flying....
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I have a similar setup with my dials, one difference though, I use the M-Fn button to switch from the back screen to the viewfinder and I have the ISO set up to my control ring dial. Smooth, quiet, and fast!
Yes!! I need to set up my control ring!!
I just bought one and we got a R for my wife. basically we changed from our DSLRs to Mirrorless. our first wedding with the R6 and R will be 10-10-2020.
So exciting!!
You will love it!
I have been on a fence about the R6 because of its 20 megapixes. But after this video i think im sold
Yes thats what I worry about
Plenty big enough, especially for wedding photographers or if you shoot in low light at all. It’s such a nice sensor.
Yes me too!
Its not a problem for me!
jvhphoto 20mp is more than enough.
Very true! Thanks for watching!
After watching this video I came , almost, to the point of logging into my Prime account and order this camera... almost, but, yeah, first time viewer, very infomative presentation
Glad I could help!! It is backordered every where!! There is still some time to make that decision haha!!
Absolutely fabulous video on the usage of the R6. Best of luck in your future.
Thanks, you too!

Just recently got my R6 . Very impressed. Got a 70-200 RF L f/4 this week. looking forward to trying this.
So awesome!
Jon Sabogal rent one. Borrowlenses has some. My concern is similar to yours
Patrick Marcigliano thanks for the note on the EVF. So in terms of the images would you say you are happier with R or R6 results?
We have not had any issues with the megapixels
Hey Katelyn, thank you so much for sharing this info! I just bought my R6 and am shooting my first wedding with it this weekend - this was such a helpful confidence booster for me to hear about the issues you encountered, and what you loved about it. Thank you SO much!
It’s the camera babe. It’s the camera. It’s magic.
It is magic!
This video was very informative and very helpful. I’ve been thinking about the R6 and you solidified the decision. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I've found mirrorless autofocus to be awesome in really low light. Especially in the dance floor. In a lot of low light situations even my dinky little X‐T20 was noticeably faster focusing than the 5D IV
It is amazing!
Just bought this camera. Can't wait to get it. I have to use the adapter for my EF-s lens. Hopefully it still comes out good
The adapter works great!
@@KatelynJames , thank you so much for your reply!
That's so awesome to hear Shea! Thanks for watching and commenting!
By far the best review I've seen on the R6 to date! This made me even more excited and confident about my purchase 😆
Glad I could help! You will love it!!
Thanks for this video Katelyn! I was wondering how practical was it to switch lenses with the adapter? Please share your thoughts.
it was really simple!
Thanks for watching!
Using Live view to shoot with 5Dm4 you can put the AF point to object at corner of the screen too. Just make sure you have all focus points selected
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this review! I’m ready to move into a full frame, professional camera and was considering the Mark IV. I hesitated bc, well the entire industry is changing! This video has really helped me settle the internal debate I’ve been having!
It is the big debate right now! I think mirrorless is the way to go!
Omgsh I almost can’t believe that you spoke to one of my biggest frustrations, my 50 mm, in my case, on my Canon Mark 3. The images I’ve been getting are so fuzzy, I’m happy to know it wasn’t just me! Excited about upgrading!
Glad I could help!
I love it! we will do a video why i chose r6 over r5
Wow thank you so much ♡
This has helped me so much because I was thinking of getting the 5D mark iv but after researching and watching your video I’m leaning more towards the EOS R6 ♡ this was so helpful
Glad I could help!
Welp - I was going to wait until Black Friday to order this...but looks like I'm going to order it today and attempt to patiently wait for it to restock!
I had the same thought but I was told these will not go on sale because they were just released. Not sure how true that is
@@PeacefulMoments1844 canon gave a discount r ready now, and samys camera 44th bday is giving no tax. i think I saw the r6, but not sure.
It is worth the wait!!
Thanks for sharing Jared!!
Yes the flash but if you use TTL. Should be able to see before you shoot. That would be a good test.
The only thing that I find is that we print big and I also want to be able to crop the image but then again the R5 is over £4000
We have not really noticed a difference editing between the two cameras!
Okay! Thanks for your review on this camera. I want to make sure what would be my first very camera of my own. I would like to be on top of my game.
It really is the best!
Awesome, two questions: what kind of SD cards did you buy and also why did you get the R6 and not the R5? I am trying to decide which one is better... thank you 😊
These are the SD cards: amzn.to/33OMiHo. we are doing a video on R6 over R5
I think I'm sold! I too am a Mark IV lover and disciple but am ready to turn the corner toward tomorrow's technology and could find tremendous benefit to have gear features that allow me to work more efficiently and creatively. Thanks for your comprehensive video and candor! Best!
You are gonna love it!
Katelyn, your such a beauty. I love your background. Looks so relaxing 🤗. Thank you for your review on this camera.
Thanks for watching!
Just heard your podcast episode with Nathan and just wanted to come back on here and tell you I also bought the R6 because of this video! 😂 I just wanted a straight forward wedding photography related review of the camera and you delivered! Thank you!
This is good stuff! I’m looking at a new camera and this helped me out a lot! You sound and look like you should be on HGTV! Subscribed.
Glad I could help! We have actually been interviewed for a show.... it never happened!!
Great to hear your excitement, I've got my R6 on order and can't wait to start taking photos!
You are gonna love it!
Great informative video -- thanks! I have the EOS R, and I was wondering if you set your exposures by using the meter in the viewfinder or if you are judging your exposure by looking at the image in the EVF?
a little of both...
Omg literally just bought an r6 today I’m soooo excited
Thanks for watching!
I just got an R6. I would love to see some of your settings and how you adjust while shooting.
Thanks for watching Ann!
I miss the built in flash on R6 like on my 90D, it's so convenient.
It is convenient, but there are a lot of other perks with the R6
Built in flash creates trash images!, bounce flash is far better.
Naw...
So True! Thanks for sharing!
Just want to clarify that we love the R6 Glad you enjoyed the video!
You can turn off exposure compensation within the viewfinder so you can still see what you’re looking at when using flash. You can set a button or my menu setting to quickly access it and then turn it off afterwards.
Thanks for watching!
This is a great video! Thank you for being so specific and covering everything!
You are so welcome!
Great video! Very informative and well presented. Your enthusiasm, knowledge, talent and modesty shines through!
Wow, thank you!
We love it! I haven't had any trouble
Great point!!
As someone who has shot hundreds of weddings I was indeed a fence sitter but your video was the last straw. Canon take my money!
haha it really is amazing!!
Hope you enjoy it!
