    The RF 85mm f/1.2L USM has a crazy distinctive look where you can take a glance at a photograph that was taken with it and you're just like, "THAT'S IT! That's the RF 85mm!" It is, however, nowhere near my roadmap as a keen amateur who stubbornly prefers DSLR 😉 The 135mm lens is also amazing and basically feather weight, which I discovered when a wedding photographer saw that I had my camera at a wedding just to do some casual photos (NOT to upstage the main photog!) and started pushing lenses at me to try. It was pretty fun!

    I always thought of wedding photography as the most demanding and problematic photo genre - it's the one where you really, really cannot mess up. Everything else, even sports events, wildlife, landscape, all of them feel paced and predictable by comparison. And I've worked on a ship, which is a nightmare on its own. With weddings, you need to think fast, think on your feet, adapt to impossibly diverse lighting conditions, please absolutely everybody, you only get one shot at each moment, you need to consider individual expectations and demands and above all, it has to look like the only wedding you've ever shot, absolutely unique, intimate and artful. And you have to do it all whilst being invisible and barely able to tell anyone what to do, to fit into the frame.

      You'd be surprised at how noticeable you actually can be, and how in control you need to be. You can tell people what to do. OK, not during the actual ceremony itself, speeches, or the party, but for posed mock register signings, family portraits, bridal portraits, and when someone grabs you and asks "can you take a picture of us two please?", you need to be in control!

    If you’re on an RF budget... which given the price of most lenses... yes. 😆 The RF 85 F2 is a great lens for the price. It also shoots as a 1:2 Macro lens which I find to be more than enough for most wedding situations.

    For Weddings I almost always have the RF 28-70 on one R5, and the RF 85 1.2 DS on my second R5 - I change lenses one the second body to the RF 70-200 2.8, or RF 100mm macro as needed (I did not have an EF version), 100% agreed with everything you said about the 28-70... I really want Canon to bring out a 35 1.2 DS! I really love that the 85 1.2 DS lets in similar light amounts to the 28-70, it makes for a really smooth transition between lenses, and it is amazing being able to shoot wide open on sunny days without ND filters - WOW our kits are soooo close!!! and a lot of the reasoning behind the else too - for me the 70-200 is a necessity in some situations, but... for some others the 70-200 is their favourite, or primary lens! Back on my 5d4 I used my EF 135 f2 over a 70-200 as well.
    My most recent investment has been an Elinchrom 500 ELB Twin Kit, along with a few modifiers ; 70cm Silver beauty dish, 125cm deep silver umbrella, and a huge 190 CM Parabolic... I really love that the kit runs on battery, but can also be used while the battery is on power... so it is highly versatile, and works well whether I am doing headshots, or out on location!

    While I don’t photograph weddings anymore I always love hearing your take on lenses! I’ve been wanting to buy the 28-70 to be able to eliminate my 16-35, 35, and 85 at the beach. I hate switching at the beach mid family session. Curious what you think for the compression at 70 vs the 85 when it’s the water and sky in the background. I wonder if it will be as noticeable compared to trees and object like your side by side.

    • @KatelynJames

    For most situations, including just about every wedding, an XC-I card is fine. An XC-II card is going to give you benefits if you shoot a lot in high burst mode. If you want to do a lot of 4K video, then that V30/60/90 is important, V90 giving you a great speed advantage. I have my R6 in transit to me(finally) and I bought 2 Kingston Canvas React Plus 64GB XC-II V90 cards. They were among the cheapest, yet fast cards that had good reviews. Eventually, I'll upgrade to something bigger and more expensive...

    • @KatelynJames
      @KatelynJames  2 года назад +1

      Yes, everything you've said here is correct. In my workflow with this camera I've never had buffer issues and never had card issues when filming in 4K so the cheaper cards work for me! But if you shoot sports or something like that, you may benefit from the faster cards.

      Hmm that's a great point! If something happened to my 28-70 I would use Michael's. He would just use the 70-200 or 85mm for the rest of the day I suppose! We should probably bring our EF 24-70 f/2.8 as a backup for him in that scenario! In your case if the 24-70 is the ONLY other lens you have, I would hold onto it. But if you have something like a 35mm or 50mm that you could use in a pinch that would work too!

    F1.2 is silly, it not only blows out the background, it also blows out the silhouette of the subject, get the EF 70-200/2.8 version II or III whichever you can find a better deal on, and forget the 1.2 primes.
    You can even get some extension tubes for your 70-200, and there's your macro lens.

I don't do weddings, so 24-100 mm 4f have been good to me plus just recently added 85mm 1.2f, which I absolutely love and was thinking on getting a 35mm 1.8f next to have something for low light situation when I want to be closer to my subject, but now I think I'm going to wait to save money and get a 28-70mm 2f to have it as my run and gun

    I've noticed a lot of photographers that I follow on RUclips recently talking about outsourcing editing... I feel like that is pointless and takes away from the "creative" aspect of being a photographer. Thoughts?

    • @KatelynJames
      @KatelynJames  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching Keith! I totally get where you are coming from. For me it was removing something that was time consuming and taking away from my growing family. I still edit every image that goes on the blog, which allows for the creative aspect, but the hundreds of other images that get delivered can be edited by someone other than me. It allows me to take on more clients, workless (editing) and make more money.

    Great video. I’m very surprised that you don’t use the 35mm and 50mm anymore. I suppose the 28-70 is that good.
    OAN, I’ve never use the canon RF 100 mm lens. My EF delivers such a beautiful image with character that I don’t see a good reason to spend the money for the RF version.

    Just for curiosity, do you do strictly weddings or do you also do family lifestyle type photo shoots also? Actually I’m wondering about family events of your own and how you take photos or capture your own memories. Do you think flash photography is a nuisance to constantly seeing it pop off and people knowing you’re taking photos or a necessary “evil” in a way? A lot of the time it’s within a home and the lighting isn’t always great and the time of year also changes things when it gets darker earlier in winter.
    I know you have some videos from before about your own process and creating family albums but any thoughts on additional thoughts about it would be helpful…are you typically sneaky about capturing genuine moments or right up in the situation? I guess this also depends on family dynamics and personalities. My father in law is the type that probably would prefer to not have his photo taken and a bit more of a reffed personality if that makes sense.
    Anyones thoughts would be appreciated!

    Even though the cards can carry a high gigabyte amount, do you still break up your wedding days into smaller gigabyte amounts? When I took a wedding photography class 11+ years ago, my professor had suggested shooting on multiple cards just in case of the outside chance that one of the cards should go bad…That way not everything would be lost if something happened. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @KatelynJames
      @KatelynJames  2 года назад +5

      I shoot backup JPGS to my 2nd card and with the R6 you could shoot RAW to both cards if you wanted to! Cards are much more reliable these days and I feel like swapping cards more often you're at a higher risk of losing or breaking a card than you are one corrupting. Plus, I shoot so much that I still have to swap pretty frequently as it is so going to even smaller cards would be a huge hassle for me!

    I’m also curious about how it feels to use these lenses on a full wedding day ! Like, how does it feel holding it or having it dangle at your side? It doesn’t seem like you ever use a battery grip so your set up gets to stay relatively lighterrrr. I guess I’m asking about what it’s like physically and mentally to use these lenses all day (asking as someone is very small and is nervous about upgrading to huge lenses)
