Glad to know I'm not the only one shooting weddings with only two primes. I'm currently also using the Sigma 35mm 1.4 and also the Sigma Art 105mm f1.4. Love that combo.
Always good content bro. It’s pretty cool that you can feel the passion just by watching you on screen. I always hear people say that when I’m making my videos but always wondered if you can really see when someone is passionate about their craft. You confirmed it !
When I first started shooting weddings for a photographic studio, I was supplied with a medium format camera with a normal lens. Shot many weddings with just one lens, a flash unit, and an assistant. When I started shooting weddings for myself, I used two medium format cameras with a normal lens, a wide lens, and a telephoto lens. When I started shooting digital weddings, I used two Nikon SLRs with 35mm f/2, 85mm f/1.8, and 180mm f/2.8 Nikon manual focus lenses. Later, I upgraded and used 35mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 180mm f/2.8 Nikon lenses. The 85mm f/1.4 was the only auto focus. For backup, I had an extra Nikon digital SLR body with three Nikon auto focus zoom lenses (14-24mm f/2.8, 28-70mm f/2.8, and 80-200mm f/2.8). I also carried a 105mm f/2.8 Nikon macro for close-ups and tight portraits.
Man, your Nikon SLR setup is my current DSLR setup for weddings, using a D4S and a pair of D700s. I use the 35 F2, 85 1.8, the 180 2.8, and the 80-200 2.8. The 80-200 has prime lens characteristics IMO, the results are amazing. And I just love what I get from the 180, I love it so much that I will go the distance for shots with it!
I shot weddings for 7 years, watching you talk about it makes me miss it in a way! Love your perspective. Also, I haven't used it, but that 85 1.2 looks so magical🤩
First wedding I shot I got awesome images for a friend with a 60mm macro lens on aps-c so - yeah I've been on the prime ride. That's close enough to an 85mm prime as makes no odds - but slower. Now I've got the zooms and a few primes and full frame. I shoot dance, events and even sports and the light is always terrible. 70-200 f/4 (the f/2.8 is great too - just heavier) handles nearly everything but a 50mm f/1.4 or a 35mm f/1.4 would be my best complementary lens to that for a wedding. Those 2 lenses are 90% there. What's missing is the 100mm f/2.8 macro IS - jewellery, detail, close-ups - all a part of the story in a collage.
I feel like with so many different ways to shoot a wedding or event, it is hard to decide on what we want. It is all about personal taste in photos (unless the lighting or space cause you to require a specific lens). On one hand the primes give the great shallow depth. On the other hand a nice zoom means you could use one body (with a backup put away if you need it) and just have the camera in your hand with no additional things to hold you back from getting in some flexing positions.
Love it man. Those straps are cool!! 👍🏻 Deffo agree with the 85 and 35. Wide enough without the distortion is deffo a point to consider. Another awesome video. 🙏🏻 stay safe
I agree about your choice of using primes. If it was me doing weddings, and I was wealthy enough, I would go medium format with a couple of Fujifilm GFX 50R cameras and similar prime lenses. Weight for two cameras with 45mm f/2.5 and a 110mm f/2.0 is 3050 grams. Your Canon outfit is 3805 grams! The Fuji handles pretty fast, though the autofocus isn't as good as Canon's.
I appreciate all the effort invested to do this video and also I admire your work, that being said, It would be great to get to see a lot of sample pictures while you talk to help visualize what you are saying and make it more compelling. Again I appreciate all your work and use it as a reference for myself. Thanks Teppo
Great Video. Do you use 1.4 apertures for group shots in lower light? If the people are not all same distance away from camera doesn't it cause some out of focus subjects, even with 35mm? Thanks
I'm trying to decide on the Sigma 35 f1.4 Art and the Canon 35 f1.4 Mark I... Should I just get the Sigma?? Julia Trotti loved her Canon 35 for years but I feel like the Sigma on my Canon RP wouldn't miss Focus too much?
My photo mentor had a side photo business employing six additional photographers. Daily job was metalgurist supervisor. He used Leica screw mounts, M3 and M2. Lenses were 50, 35, and 90 for formal portraits. 6 rolls of 36 per wedding. you are not the only one who used two 2 cameras and 2 lenses mostly. He made enough to send 3 children to expensive private college. My wedding was done with a TLR Rolliie and an occasional mutar.
Constantly struggling to decide my preferred combo for most of the day: 28-75mm f2.8 and the 135mm GM f1.8 Or 35mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 Better quality/sharpness on the first pair but the 135mm is a bit more niche and most shots would be with the tamron. Hi, thanks for great video. One question - How do you shoot outside wedding ceremonies that happening at noon? I am struggling with sharp sun light. Is there some hack? UV or ND filter? Or is it in the camera settings? Thanks in advance
Here in Portugal, brides get dressed at home. Some bedrooms have 10 square meters. You would definitely need something wider. Also some churches are quite small, also impossible to do a group shot with your gear.
Hello from Greece!!!All my lens is Canon,3 zoom( 16-35mm 2,8. 24-70mm 2,8. 70-200mm 2,8) and 2 prime Macro 100mm 2,8 and my favourite 85mm 1,4..And now i am ready to buy 35mm and i am between canon or sigma off course the both 1,4f..What is your opinion about this prime lens???Thankss
The one time where I would have preferred zoom lenses is when I shot at a church that had very restricted rules about where the photographer could stand so I was limited with where I could be and how much zooming with my feet I could do. Luckily I did have zoom lenses at that time but if I didn't I may not have been able to get some of the shots I did.
Gh5 still, but Im actually thinking of potentially shooting with the 1DX mark iii or EOS R for weddings this summer. Just trying to think what should I do for stabilization
Thanks for the inspirations! I am thinking of selling my EF 28 F2.8 & 50 F1.2, and buying RF 35 F1.8 and 85 F2 for my RP. would you agree with my idea? Thanks.
DnAydin depends what you consider worth the quality. Considering I’ve had my straps for 5 years & used them over 1500 hours with no sign of wear it actually makes them pretty inexpensive when you consider the upfront cost & long term use.
Totally worth it, too many crappy straps on the market. It's like asking if a Sonos speaker is worth the price. If you have to ask, don't bother :) You probably won't know what you're missing anyway.
I love Matti's channel, but sometimes can't relate because its a lot of videography (still informing to watch) but now Ive found Teppo (not sure how it took my YT algorithm so long to connect the dot for me) and its like Matti but more photography......perfect! lol
They’re the hold fast money maker straps. I’ve had mine for the past 10 years now and they have worn in nicely and I can’t ever see myself needing to replace them. Absolutely top quality profuct
I've done free shoots 🤣 with my 55-200mm Nikon lens 🤣 which sucks ... But I've borrowed Nikon 50mm 1.8 from a friend to cover up basically the entire wedding... I felt wrong to even charge them money 🤣 however if you'd like to see my shoots I can share them... If I had the luxury to get myself a 35mm or 50mm I'll glad just give away the 55-200mm 🤣
I'd appreciate you showing some examples you've shot with each setup while you talk about them in the video. Information would be lighter to digest that way. :)
food photography and wedding photography are very different, I work with wedding, food and real estate. wedding photography is more at the moment type of work, many things out there can be change contently, example weathers, your clients bride and groom, another people that you have to photograph for, background(or I should say the wedding venue that you are in) things that are you can't control; and we need to have a set posts and ideas to adapt situations. For food, we can always to use the gears we have to get the best and most satisfy shots even after many many tries for one product shot, and we can use longer time for set up get the perfect one. Lastly, I think wedding is more into time management, because time doesn't wait for you when we are shooting the wedding everything will goes on even you are not ready for it. Food you can take a longer time to construct your composition, lighting, angle, backdrop sets, these things are all able to control . These are only my person thought, if anyone of you out there have better and different ideas please let me know too.
Matthew Lau it makes sense. I Need to try to find a client ready to risk lol. Until then I will practice some timings family photos. Or may be start with small events, birthdays. But non of that is happening 😖 until 19-DIVOC gone. Thank for taking time to write.
@@welovefoodsyou are mostly welcome!! This COVID-19 is very kill me!!! The same day that the restaurant restriction was on and took out two of my bar event gigs on the St. Patrick's day!! Now I m helping location restaurant to nake their stock photos when they are ready to open for full service then they can promote themself. I m very affected by this, and I m sure this is killing all of us.
Matthew Lau sorry to hear that bro, it’s effecting everyone one or the other way. I started to do food delivery as my works are on pause. Hopefully it’s not for too long. We will get through 🍻
I got a canon 35MM EF 1.4L Mark 1 canon 50MM F1.2L 85MM EF 1.8 and two canon 80Ds cameras and zoom 16/35MM F1.4L and Canon 70/300MM F4/5.6L lens and two canon 600EXT Flashes and a Tokina 100 MM 2.8 Macro Lens
There are just more reasons to use zoom lens other than “being lazy”. When you use wide lenses like 24, 35 to shoot a group of people, you don’t shoot 1.4, so it looses the benefit, of course if you want to, you have the option. But what I want to say is it is really no point to talk down about using zoom lens. I know a lot of famous photographers being shooting weddings with zoom lenses, and their work are amazing!
Great video. I use the EOS R, a Canon 50 1.8 and the Sigma 35 1.4 for weddings. I'm in love with the Sigma because of its versatility, be it photos or videos(the dreamy flaring it creates look fantastic). I wish to own the RF 85 1.2 some day! Also, you're right about the look of prime lenses, it's something the zooms can never match.
@@sohamroy9766 that's fair enough, I guess it depends what you are getting paid... I also have the eos r, really love the size, feel and images it takes. Saving for the r5 but may take some time. Just waiting for the ef 85 1.4 IS to arrive - looks a dream lens!
Hey Teppo...love your videos buddy...I wanted to ask if your view mentioned in this video would be different now that you have the Canon RF 28-70 f2 lens?
I personally believe that prime lenses aren't good for reportage shoots during weddings. Yes, primes are more faster than zooms and they have better bokeh, BUT... these days ISO is powerful enough to work with 2.8 or 4 F-stops in low light conditions and what's more valuable in zooms is the fact that working with zooms you will get more genuine emotions shots because shooting process is much faster than with zooms and what's even more important IT'S more discreet.
Not only a matter of light, but also subject isolation. With a relative far away subject (let’s say few meters with a 85), there is a huge difference between 1.2 and 2.8 ;)
@@patlezinc this is obvious that you'll get more subject isolation with bigger aperture. It's embarrassing even to talk about that, common you guys :) What I am offering here to talk about values in photography.
Well well let me say you look slick in those shirts, you should drop a link to them. I like that set up as well with those two lens, for me i use my 135 with my 24-70 if i have two cameras, I am often shooting with one because i only own one. BTW, knock knock knock knock, that's cannon at the door for the camera. They want you to trade it in for the 1DX Mark III. They cant have you representing with old technology hehe. O I like that second handle camera for your talking head. Standing up really works for you.
I shot a wedding video (on my channel if anyone is curious) with 2 super cheap Lumix GX85 cameras, with a Sigma 30mm (60mm equiv.) F/1.4 and a Sigma 56mm (112mm equiv.) F/1.4! By shooting with primes, I tricked some people into thinking I was using a high end bokeh-licious full frame camera. Ended up making back more than the cost of one of those bodies in one video project, with the couple and their families were really happy with the outcome! I'm saving up for a Lumix G9 now!
That is basically my setup except with 5dmk3 and the 85 and 35 EF 1.4 lenses. I’ll switch to the 16-35 for the dancing shots during the reception. I want to jump to the R system but have to wait until we can get two card slots, I get too nervous about loosing photos with just one card in a camera. Also our wedding season in Florida is the exact opposite of yours November to May
Over here all my weddings are cancelled for this summer and re-date for 2021 sad... No events in Canada until August 31 2020 well at least in my province
Oh man, that is insane!!! How you holding up financially? Do you give the dates from 2021 summer to your 2020 clients rescheduling or do u make them book Fridays or Sundays instead?
@@TeppoHaapoja well our Prime Minister really help a lot financially for couple of months, in the case of clients changing their dates its gonna be a mess because of the people that is getting married in 2021, in my case I have to prioritize my 2020 client so they wont choose the same date as my 2021 clients that already set a date as well as other 2020 clients that will need to reschedule, need to be all in sync Im exhausted just to think about all that lol
I shoot weddings with two Sony A9's. I started with 24-70 and 70-200 - Now I shoot with 85mm 1.4 and 20mm 1.8 . In some UK venues even 24mm isn't wide enough so I got the new 20mm to see how it goes :-)
Hey man, I am a teen and starting a new photography career. I shoot on sony APSC, what focal lengths or/and lenses do you recommend? Thank you so much, subscribed with notifications.
Sigma makes really good glass for those crop bodies. I have a 16mm 1.4 which is honestly better than a lot of my full frame lenses. (It's an equivalent to a 24mm Feild if view). I would maybe go with a super fast 50-55mm lens intended for crop that has decent autofocus I'd definitely look at the Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN lens. It's great in low light, gives an equivalent image to a full frame 85mm f2.1 with autofocus and maybe the 16mm or the 30mm would pair nicely. If you are looking to stick with primes for you a6xxx series camera. (I have had good results with my 18-105mm f4, but it's not good if you need a shallow depth of field) .
That 85mm RF lens, I am like wow, wish I could afford that. That is my WANT number one lens, but it is 2 EOS R’s worth of camera gear....... So have to wait as it is just a hobby for me. Just using the EF 1.8 normal canon lens, does a good job for the price.

It's never been easier to become a wedding photographer, the cameras do all the work and these highschool drop outs can finally pay some taxes.
One of those cameras looks like a Small SUV and the other o ne like a VW Bug LOL!! 😂😂
Have you upgraded?
I love that 85mm look and 24-70mm to wold be my set up.
85mm is great!
@@TeppoHaapoja Yes it is.
What about a 50mm and a 24mm? Thoughts?
Works well too!
What are you shooting with for the video?
Gh5 still, but Im actually thinking of potentially shooting with the 1DX mark iii or EOS R for weddings this summer. Just trying to think what should I do for stabilization
@@TeppoHaapoja Yah, you could get a gimbal. Or some people use a Steadicam for vlogging. Big but it works.
How do you get into America with your gear? They could Google you...
HA shh...
Do you recommend someone shooting both wedding photos and wedding videos?
It aint easy!
What about flashes though?
Thanks for the inspirations!
I am thinking of selling my EF 28 F2.8 & 50 F1.2, and buying RF 35 F1.8 and 85 F2 for my RP. would you agree with my idea? Thanks.
Where can I find this strap for the camera ?
It’s called the hold fast money maker
Heres a link for the straps, amzn.to/2VfwAlp
Teppo Haapoja too expensive
DnAydin depends what you consider worth the quality. Considering I’ve had my straps for 5 years & used them over 1500 hours with no sign of wear it actually makes them pretty inexpensive when you consider the upfront cost & long term use.
Totally worth it, too many crappy straps on the market. It's like asking if a Sonos speaker is worth the price. If you have to ask, don't bother :) You probably won't know what you're missing anyway.
Do you do more video or photo on weddings?
Mixture of both!
@@TeppoHaapoja At the same time? 1 man band?
I love Matti's channel, but sometimes can't relate because its a lot of videography (still informing to watch) but now Ive found Teppo (not sure how it took my YT algorithm so long to connect the dot for me) and its like Matti but more photography......perfect! lol
Haha thanks Dan, welcome to the channel.
Awesome video Teppo! I use Sony a7iii & a6600 as a backup. Mainly video so its a 35mm 1.4 / 70-200 for speeches and 85mm 1.8
Nice, sounds like a solid setup!
Wedding session coming up in 3 weeks. I really want to get a hold of straps like those so I can attach 2 cameras. Any idea where to get one?!
They’re the hold fast money maker straps. I’ve had mine for the past 10 years now and they have worn in nicely and I can’t ever see myself needing to replace them. Absolutely top quality profuct
Great video love the 35 & 85. Sub
🙌🙌🙌
I've done free shoots 🤣 with my 55-200mm Nikon lens 🤣 which sucks ... But I've borrowed Nikon 50mm 1.8 from a friend to cover up basically the entire wedding... I felt wrong to even charge them money 🤣 however if you'd like to see my shoots I can share them... If I had the luxury to get myself a 35mm or 50mm I'll glad just give away the 55-200mm 🤣
I'd appreciate you showing some examples you've shot with each setup while you talk about them in the video. Information would be lighter to digest that way. :)
Keep that in mind next time my friend!
Awesome setup! I usually use zoom lenses for weddings but I’m starting to doubt haha
Which zoom lens do u usually use? How come? Id love to hear your perspective. Id highly suggest trying some prime lenses
I use a tamron 24-70 g2 and canon 70-200. Which primes do you think could replace them??
Hej Teppo! this is so good. I have been following your brother and now I am following you too...
Amazing! Welcome bro.
I use 28mm and 50mm. 85mm only for portrait
I’m a food photographer, do you think I can get into wedding photography? Thank you.
food photography and wedding photography are very different, I work with wedding, food and real estate. wedding photography is more at the moment type of work, many things out there can be change contently, example weathers, your clients bride and groom, another people that you have to photograph for, background(or I should say the wedding venue that you are in) things that are you can't control; and we need to have a set posts and ideas to adapt situations.
I m very affected by this, and I m sure this is killing all of us.
Matthew Lau sorry to hear that bro, it’s effecting everyone one or the other way. I started to do food delivery as my works are on pause. Hopefully it’s not for too long. We will get through 🍻
Hey Teppo, any pros and cons with RF 35mm 1.8 over the Sigma ART?
I guess only pro is sigma is 1.4 but Im assuming the Rf 35mm 1.8 is alot cheaper?
What you have on shoulders to hunting cameras is hand made ?
HA what sorry?
Any recommendations on a camera strap that can hold two cameras?
These are my camera straps, look good and super durable - amzn.to/3cVLEus
I got a canon 35MM EF 1.4L Mark 1 canon 50MM F1.2L 85MM EF 1.8 and two canon 80Ds cameras and zoom 16/35MM F1.4L and Canon 70/300MM F4/5.6L lens and two canon 600EXT Flashes and a Tokina 100 MM 2.8 Macro Lens
Nice man!
Love the camera straps. Where’d you get those
There Holdfast Moneymaker straps, heres an amazon link for them!
@@TeppoHaapoja BIG THANKS!!!
Teppo, have you try hybrid (photo + video) in a wedding?
Yes! Its tough.
Did you make these camera straps from leather belts?
No its a duel camera strap system from a company called Holdfast
totally agree! Love these lenses
Have you ever felt limited with the canon eos R while shooting a wedding? Such as too slow, focus issues, etc?
Not for photos. But for video yes.
May i ask what kind of strap you're using?
Its the Holdfast straps
Thank you!!👍🏽
Great video.
Great setup man, Sigma 35mm is a great lens.
@@TeppoHaapoja indeed
Are you guys not worried about the single card slot on the eos r?
@@adamhewitt8763 TBH with you, it never bothered me & I can say so because I've never had any card fail on me.
Definitely. But the 35 + 85 is a great setup as well.
@@TeppoHaapoja Thanks for the reply....sure thing.
@@TeppoHaapoja Thanks for the response....no doubt!
Have you tried the Tamron 35mm f1.4?
I havent had a chance yet, how do u like it?
Teppo Haapoja haven’t received yet... I live in South America, but damn everyone who reviewed says its the best 35mm out there!
Good perspective. I still prefer primes but hey, its figuring out what works for you!
@@TeppoHaapoja I agree, there is no right or wrong answer here, it's a question of choice. Just decided to share some point of view .)
Not only a matter of light, but also subject isolation. With a relative far away subject (let’s say few meters with a 85), there is a huge difference between 1.2 and 2.8 ;)
@@patlezinc Indeed!
Thats awesome Shaun, post the video below!
2 cameras on arms.
2 angles interview type shots.
This man has 4 cameras at his disposal.
Damn. *inhale deeply holding my Sony a5100*
Hahaha sorry bro
I run something super similar, 1dx2 + EOS R and 2-3 primes 👌🏼
Nice bro! Where you based?
Teppo Haapoja Sydney my man!
Me looking at thumbnail: huh Matti looks different...
First video of yours man. Great content.
HA it happens often. Were brothers :) Welcome to the community Nick
Also our wedding season in Florida is the exact opposite of yours November to May
Nice! I loved shooting with the 5D Mark iii, the joystick is great on it for focus points
Dang I should start coming to Florida for my off season ;) Got any gigs for me!? HA
@@TeppoHaapoja well our Prime Minister really help a lot financially for couple of months, in the case of clients changing their dates its gonna be a mess because of the people that is getting married in 2021, in my case I have to prioritize my 2020 client so they wont choose the same date as my 2021 clients that already set a date as well as other 2020 clients that will need to reschedule, need to be all in sync Im exhausted just to think about all that lol
great video bro!
Thanks!
I shoot weddings with two Sony A9's. I started with 24-70 and 70-200 - Now I shoot with 85mm 1.4 and 20mm 1.8 . In some UK venues even 24mm isn't wide enough so I got the new 20mm to see how it goes :-)
Nice man, sounds like a solid setup.
You could apply this to concerts probably?
Of course! Event photography in general.
where did you get that camera harness?!
Theres an amazon link for it in my description
question do you miss shots with the sigma on the canon body
Hey man, I am a teen and starting a new photography career. I shoot on sony APSC, what focal lengths or/and lenses do you recommend? Thank you so much, subscribed with notifications.
Sigma makes really good glass for those crop bodies. I have a 16mm 1.4 which is honestly better than a lot of my full frame lenses. (It's an equivalent to a 24mm Feild if view).
I would maybe go with a super fast 50-55mm lens intended for crop that has decent autofocus
I'd definitely look at the Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN lens. It's great in low light, gives an equivalent image to a full frame 85mm f2.1 with autofocus and maybe the 16mm or the 30mm would pair nicely. If you are looking to stick with primes for you a6xxx series camera.
(I have had good results with my 18-105mm f4, but it's not good if you need a shallow depth of field)
.
@@PaulKentSkatesThank you, I will research those lenses.
@@ManuStromberg That sigma 16mm is a beast! I have it and the 56mm for my sony aps-c. I rarely use anything other than those two lenses.
