Starting to do some paid shoots and the 35 + 85 combo works like a charm. Great focal lengths to shoot. I do have to invest in a second camera body, not only as a backup but also for an increase of flexibility. Swapping lenses can be a drag and you may miss a moment or two.
I have moved to mostly a 35mm - 85mm combo and still take 50mm 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. The 70-200 2.8 can really crush a distracting background and pull in distant objects if needed. Great video, little over the top with the hipster theme.

You MUST be my dad, because you knew EXACTLY what's going on in my life, and I had no idea! I've booked my first wedding for later this year, and was contemplating going with two DSLRs and only primes. I wasn't sure if that was a great idea or, if it was, how best to make it work. This was exactly what I needed. I feel a lot more confident with my plan, kinda impressed with my own ingenuity, and more prepared on how to make it work beautifully. Thank you pops!! (*disclaimer, you look at least a decade younger than me, so getting to call anyone else 'dad' is a salve to my sensitive ego :D)
Good call. I loved using just two primes when I used to shoot weddings. My faves were the 35 1.4 the 85 1.2 and the 200 f2 the latter awesome for candid distance subject isolation. I also used to carry the 14 mm 2.8 as well.
I'm getting back into photography after 25 years. Video is like learning a new whole language. At weddings, we did everything with 24-50mm lens & I had zoom too that I didn't use too much. I don't remember the length. Carried 2 cameras with me, always had an old one in a car. I had it so why not? Excellent video. I use to develop my own film too.
Just watching this back for some more tips cause i love refreshing my advice from pops. But can we just talk about how he absolutely snatched that first lens off the body at 5:30, like as if bo twisting was required he just CRACKS it off with such skill 😂
Hey dad, you gotta shorten those loops on the holdfast, I watched the how-to vids and shortened mine to make it tighter.. made a HUGE difference! Sorry if I came off like a wise-ass now, just want you to have a healthy back :D
Seriously underrated tip: stitching together two 35mm shots, that'll save your life more than once. Just make sure nothing changes along the edge, and take a backup shot (as you probably should anyway). :)
@@andreachavez2016 Basically, you just take two to three shots (usually in portrait orientation), and then use either photoshop or lightroom to electronically merge those photos together into a 'panorama'. As long as nothing has changed along the edges, this can work really, really well, and it allows you to get a wide shot with a tighter lens (think a 35 field of view with an 85, or a 16 field of view with a 35). Eric has a really good video on stitching together photos like this (though, it's a slightly different application, specifically with portraits).
Thanks for sharing your process. I prefer a zoom primarily the 70-200 since what venues I've shot are smaller and don't allow for a lot of movement. It also allows me to minimize lens changes. I also don't have the budget for that many L primes. Love the look that you produce.
Thanks for this. That shoulder back doesn't need a shoulder strap... the harness has clips which can hold the bag against your lower back, where you can reach into it behind you to grab things more quickly.... as long as you know where each thing is in the bag by feel, which you can develop a skill for
Great video and funny, love it :). That's how I also shoot weddings. Primes all the way, dual strap with two camera bodies and I tuned down to 3 favorite lenses, 35, 50 and 85. Less is more.
I truly appreciate you, coming from Nikon over to Sony and in love with the Primes. Can't see myself buying another telescope simply because of what you said and how I feel, it makes you lazy and staying on your feet causes you to be creative. New Subscriber!!!
amazing video thank you! i'm being the onsite photographer for a summer school this summer and going with prime lenses 50mm & 85mm, and sigma 24-70mm zoom lens. can't wait to see what shots i get!

Very informative …now if I only could connect with people being an introvert person with a mild case of Asperger. It’s the reason I only recently picked up my camera again after nearly a decade . Great stuff. I like your channel . Not that typical overhyped dine a dozen stuff you’re flooded with these days.
Excellent video! Last year I moved to primes only for weddings and am loving it. It makes me more in tune with the event, it's makes me move more and the bokeh of primes is just fantastic! Keep the vids coming :)
Yeah, mine works swell, I just hear from half of photographers who have the ART series' lenses that they get all messed up at focusing at infinity all the time and constantly need to be calibrated. :\
Eric Floberg hmm well that sucks, but maybe the older models are worse? I dont know? I’m really happy with mine! Hope it doesnt crap out on me in a situation where i need it to work!
Yeah, a secondary/backup camera is almost a must/important for pro works, especially shooting with primes only. I wasn't even a pro, but when I started out four decades ago to cover events, I used three cameras (Nikon F2A, FE2 & Hasselblad 500 C/M). Back in the dark age of digital, I had Nikon D3, D300 & Canon 5D Mk II with two sets (Canon & Nikon) lens trinity. In addition to backup to backup as best practice, it is much easier to switch focal length (and/or ASA/ISO with film) with multiple cameras.
Such great stuff, and you are a great teacher! I rarely shoot any events/weddings, but the very few I have done, I feel like I’ve always just grabbed a 70-200 to feel safe, but I love how you utilize all primes. I am going to try that next time!
So bummed I can’t go to your class!! My sons first birthday is the 17th. Hopefully you will have success in this one and continue to do more so I can catch one!
Been using a pair of bodies with different prime lenses just about forever. However, I like the Optech Dual Harness because of the extra security of the two points of attachment for each camera. I have recently switched to Sony APSC Mirrorless cameras with 35mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8 lenses...
first time here. your lip beard is absolutely GLORIOUS lol. also, great tips! I got into photography about a year ago and have never shot a wedding but it's been something I have been thinking about and how much fun it would be. To be the one that captures the moment for the bride and groom would be so much fun and also very gratifying. I will be back for more tips and tricks! ......annndddddd...subscribed!!

awesome. now that i saw all this prime lenses i'm gonna buy a zoom 2.8. not gonna swap lenses during weddings ... expecially since probably (and luckyly) the next 2 weddings will be my last at all
Told my fiancé I was watching my RUclips daddy...I uh...I didn’t realize what came out of my mouth until she was just looking at me for 20 seconds with pure confusion
YES! TEAM PRIME LENS ONLY! 🙌 Great explanation of your workflow with primes
YOU KNOW! Thanks, John!
An 85mm and 35mm are the perfect set-up for weddings
24mm is must :) But in cases you dont require 24mm, 35mm is perfect
i agree - i use 35mm and 90 mm macro - u dont need anything else - plus i only take 1 camera
When there is tight space just go with 24mm and 50mm , when u hav more space 35mm and 85mm
28 and 85 for me
In agreement. I use a 35 on my full frame and a 50 on my crop. Works out well and economical.
I don't know.... I don't... know... I just can't get over your honest personality and silly yet, great humor ... you're so underrated
The two lenses I use for events are the 24mm for groups and 50mm for details and portraits. I definitely could do most events with those two lenses.
I use 24+50 as well. 85mm often is too long
Starting to do some paid shoots and the 35 + 85 combo works like a charm. Great focal lengths to shoot. I do have to invest in a second camera body, not only as a backup but also for an increase of flexibility. Swapping lenses can be a drag and you may miss a moment or two.
Used cameras can be a great budget solution. :) That's the route I took.
