You can only have two m2 drives because of that slot limitation. Nobody will want to buy a 5090 and then limit the speed of the lane. So plan your build for one gen 4 4tb ssd and one gen 5 4tb ssd. (Which should be more than enough for a 4+ year build unless you don't cleanup after yourself :)) this is what I'm doing with this board!
Hi Daniel, I just buy this mother and suddenly realized this limitation, I going to use it with two m.2 gen 4, it's going to impact the performance of the gpu?
@thekramer324 only if you put the m2 drive in either of the two slots that impact the performance of the GPU. It will explain it in the manual. Be sure to read the manual before you build your PC.
Time to tell how much of an impact this would have on GPU performance, by halving the 16 gen 5 lanes to 8 you are effectively getting 16x gen 4 bandwidth Rtx 4090 can run on pcie gen 3 motherboards with the impact to performance not being as drastic as you might fear. It will be interesting to see how this works out in reality
@djpep94 I think is going to have more impact on next generation of gpus. But for me two m.2 are more than enough, I can add an external ssd if I need more.
The quick release tabs on the M.2 drives is really nice. I've dropped those screws on older mother boards and they are a pain to find in the midst of a build.
quick question, right now i can only run 1 m.2 ssd because i have my elgato using one of the pci slots. would a motherboard like this allow me to use a m.2 ssd in the top slot, another m.2 in the top of the 3 ssd slots so my graphics card run at full speed, and then like a elgato connected to the pci slot at the bottom?
Yep decrease from X16 to X8 speeds. No thanks- that limits leaves you with the option of loading gen 5 ram with. Hit to your GPU or loading a GPU with minimal ram slots filled. Gonna look at other options for mobo- overall this board is super solid though
Im thinking of throwing this board in when upgrading my pc. I'm planning to just run 2 Crucial P3 plus 2TB drives which yeah ik they're pcie 4.0, but idc. Which m.2 slots would yall recommend me putting them in?
i have a question. if you populate the bottom 2 m.2 slots, you limit your graphics slot to x8. is that dependent on whether you populate them with gen 5 cards or will gen 4 cards also cause this limiting effect on the graphics slot?
Populating either of them with any m.2 will cause the GPU to run in x8. Keep in mind x8 gen 5 is equivalent in bandwidth to x16 gen 4, so this likely won't be a big deal at all
@123JimmyTheCookie im planning to run 2 of the Crucial P3 Plus 2TB drives, which are pcie 4.0. Putting them in the in the top 2 m.2 slots is what i should do?
@@Plague_Rat778 I'm also planning on running two pcie 4.0 m.2s. I think in this case yeah, top two slots makes sense (slot M2A and M2D as mentioned in the manual). The top one being the boot drive that will run off the x4 directly from CPU, and the second slot running off the chipset, which will allow the GPU to run in full x16.
This is just for peace of mind knowing my GPU is getting all it can, but it's yet to be seen if cutting the lanes in half will matter for pcie 5.0 GPUs. For pcie 4.0 yeah it had a small effect, 1-2%, but the bandwidth here is much larger, could be a completely non issue
@@123JimmyTheCookie Same. I'm going to start off with 2TB GEN4, for now. When GEN5 comes down in price, I'll switch that to A slot, move the GEN4 to D slot, GPU still unaffected in any case.
Yes and it will run at full speed cause gen5 is rated for higher than gen4. If it was the other way around gen5 drive in gen4 slot, the drive would only run at gen4 speeds. All good to go my friend!

@@thekramer324 yes absolutely
I suppose we won’t know how big the impact will be until 50 series launch and somebody like gamersnexus does a breakdown

This review is super detailed and awesome as makes it easy for me to make a decision
@@samvox994 thanks!
This is a great review. Board is on sale on Newegg right now. I dont think its worth laying around $200 more for an X870E.
Thanks!
I got the Ice version for my new build. Love it.
Recommend this mobo for a 9800x3d build?

@ I’m sure it would be compatible in the gen 5 slots or not tbh
Even if you look at the X870E (almost twice the price) it's the same issue I believe, and not a gigabyte specific issue.
Should only be an issue if you need more than 2 m.2 drives, and/or if want Gen5 exclusively.

Only a 6 layer PCB vs the 8 layer on the x670 AORUS Elite AX. WTF?
Seems like a big downgrade
PCB layer doesn't matter much
where do you go to update the bios for giggabyte? i went to the website and could not find it. do they all wear silly backwards caps like you?
Never again will I build on this form factor. You can basically thank Billy Boy. Good by Gigabyte, you used to be a friend.
