Thor: Heroes Return Omnibus Volume 1 & 2 Overview

- Today I do an overview of the two Thor Omnibuses by Dan Jurgens that brought Thor back to the Marvel Universe. I check out what is in the contents of the books are and if they are worth the purchase or an upgrade if you have the trades.

My copy was delivered Tuesday, along with Thor volume 2, I also got Spider-Man by Micheline & McFarlane new printing, Marvel Cinematic Universe Omnibus, Exiles The Complete Collection vol.1, & Harley Quinn vol. 2
The Marvel Cinematic Omni is the one I'm passing on. But everything else, it's on my list too. :)
At first I past on the Vol 1 when it first came out as I already had all the TPBs through this line. I remember reading the floppies when they were coming out starting with around issue 60 after Odin had died and really loved the story of Thor basically bringing Asgard closer to Midgard (earth) to better rule over us and all the conflict that ensued. As Randomtas68 mentioned I also had a difficult time going back to the beginning of the series and reading it via my trades as I didn't think Jurgen quite knew where to take the series. However, when IST heavily discounted the Vol 1 Omni a little while ago I am just finishing up that book and have to say the writing did start getting better towards the end (ends with issue 35). I am still waiting for Vol 2 to come in the mail and will continue reading knowing that the stories will keep getting better if my memory serves me. I'm glad Vol 2 also contains the final six issues of Thor:Disassembled during the Ragnorok storyline. A few years would pass w/o Thor again until JMS takes over and I wish I would have picked up that Omni. Oh well, still have the TPBs on that one too.
It's been several discounted a few times (Vol. 1) The whole Death of Odin and Lord of Asgard is where I was hooked.
I picked up issue number 32 of Jurgens' run at a used book store few years back, but, I only have Simonson's omnibus. Hopefully, I'll be able to get these omnibuses one of these days
Great video again man. This was the last run of Thor that I loved and followed religiously. Haven't enjoyed much about Thor in the last 15 years. hated the jms run, liked Gilians kid Loki stuff and have DESPISED Aaron's run. I'm hoping the next writer can reignite the passion I used to have for Thor. Glad the stuff I loved is finally getting reprints for me to read again since Thor from the 60s till the end of that 2nd heroes return omni are favorites of mine.
I wasn't a fan of JMS run either. I liked Gillen and wish they had given him an omni too. Aaron, I think I really like because it reminds me of the arcs that Jurgens did.
There is an omnibus for Gillens run.Its called Journey into Mystery

I recently finished vol.2, and I must say it was a fantastic journey. Of course it has some low points, but which series don't? I really enjoyed it, but it can't top Simonsons run, that is the best run ever. If you start comparing to other Thor runs then you definitely notice a lot of repeated plots, but instead I'm trying to appriciate every run on it's own. I would highly reccomend to pick this series up, while you can. Great video btw, thanks!

I wish I saw this video when it came out. Volume 2 is outta print now. Ughhhh!!! Thankfully I got a new copy of volume 1.
These both look mostly good to me. I already have the Simonson omnibus and have never read most of these as single issues, so could be fun to read them for the first time.

Great vid: I was trying to work out where it fit in my 90s run, and now it's clear. Directly after the 4-issue Heroes Return mini-series that ends the Heroes Reborn universe, right? Never read it when it came out, but now I get the feeling I missed out on an important element of that era. Love how you can see the artwork evolve through the two volumes btw: awesome. :)
Thank you for watching, brother. Yes this is right after the four issue Heroes Return mini. So along with Buziek's Avengers and Iron-man, Waid's Cap and Claremont's FF this is the other relaunch book that brought Thor back to Marvel.

The first volume was one of the rare books that I regretted getting enough to sell it again.
I liked the art, but I really struggled with Jurgen's writing. I think I got into the Juggernaut story before I just gave up the ghost.
Each to his own though.
I will say the writing does get better. He seriously drops all the thous and thees later on.
I just received volume 1 today after delving into what I consider my comic reading journey. Started last week with the NEW 52 Justice League. My question has to do with availability and cost. Why was Volume 1 easy to purchase and cheaper but Volume 2 is nowhere to be found and if it is, it cost so much.
It happened to Classic Kirby Thor vol 2...their really hard to get now
Good to know it's a good Thor run. I love Romita, Buscema, and Kubert art and Jurgens writing generally, but this was a on-the-fence purchase for me since I generally stop reading about Onslaught. I'll have to grab these.
Jon Del Arroz Onslaught was the reason I gave up reading comics.
@@NearMintCondition I cut back a lot then but One More Day is what killed all mainstream superhero comics for me. I still haven't recovered from that one, only read old stuff.
Sins Past was the one for me that made me think...well shit, maybe JMS isn't that good of a writer.
@@NearMintCondition His original pitch was actually way better -- Peter was supposed to be their father, which surprisingly wouldn't bother me nearly as much. Marvel Editorial said "no that would make peter feel old!" and suggested Norman. So, much like OMD's directive to make "peter younger" by removing the marriage, the horrible debasing of Gwen was editorial's fault.
Yeah, even the original pitch was a little weird, but way better than the outcome. Old Joe got lots of hate for that back in the day.
Now there's another 2 omnibuses I'll have to buy! I blame you ;)

Thank you for the kind words. I think the second one has better writing for sure, but volume 1 has JR Jr and Andy Kubert on art. But if I had to choose one. Volume two for sure.

These days, it looks like there are a million copies of volume 1 available and I got it crazy cheap. But volume 2 is impossible to find except for a few copies well over cover price. Argh.

Great overview, Omar. Based on what you said I think I'll pick these up. I was wondering: I've heard that the new X-Men Revolution By Chris Claremont Omnibus has a couple of key issues missing. Do you plan on doing an overview of that Omni?
Thank you for watching. I did an overview of that book a couple of months ago, if you want to check that out. Nothing is missing at all. I think they are just going to make another omnibus to fit between Revolution and Morrison's New X-men. They have enough issues to do that.

The vol 1 doesnt seem to be available out here. Will i be able to grasp the story if i start with vol2 straightway?
It changes lots of the stories with volume 2. So you can pick it up If you want.

@@santanumukhopadhyay8710 So the only thing I would worry about is there is this cast of characters that are new to Thor mythos. They are called the Dark Gods. That story arc sort of ends at the beginning of the second omnibus. Get that Simonson omnibus if you've not read it.
One more help bro... Currently Amazon India stocks have run out of omnis ...i am left with very few choices. Can you please help me select the best among the below?
(i dont have any standalone comics to support these if these are continuations) :
1. Thor heroes return vol2 omni
2. The wedding of Cyclops and Phoenix omni/ohc
3. JSA vol1 (i am not quite inclined to getting this since i am not at all familiar with the characters except obv flash and GL).
4. Grayson omni(but the value is $88)

I just bought book 2 today off ist and yes paid tax, what a fkn joke. I got the first one last month and had to get 2 while it was fifty percent off, but I really want jsa 2 n 3 but saving money right now hoping ist keeps that book till I have the loot for those two.
