Dan Jurgens Rebirth run on Action Comics was really good.
And Dan Jurgens also parlayed some plot threads into Green Lanterns.
Dan saved that series. It was brilliant how he used Cyborg Supes as jes a Dan Jurgens character and an important villian in the GL MYTHOS, with his turns in ROS and Blackest night.

Definitely an underrated run! There have been so many Thor relaunches in the last 15 years Jurgens/JRjr run is not remembered. It is Kirby sized. One of my most remembered comics images in 45 years of collecting is Odin in chains. They did dark gods and a god killer before Jason Aaron.

Dan Jurgens run is what got me into reading Thor back in High School with picking up the Dark Gods original trade at my local comic shop. It is still my favorite run on the character for sentimental reasons even though since then I read Stan Lee’s run, Gerry Conway’s run, Simonson obviously and JMS. The battles with Thanos, Mangog, Gladiator, & the Godslayer are some of my favorites!

The entire King Thor storyline by Dan was awesome!!!
This was a real fun run which was awesome throughout

The entire volume (Disassembled included) is available in 12 trades.
Great run indeed and one of my favorites in Thor.

This sounds so good. I remember they tried to publish Thor in Norway, and we got a tiny portion of it as part of a Marvel book released every 2-3 months for a couple of years or so? Then they stopped releasing it. It really was a sad place to live if you wanted to read comics.
I remember the part of Surtur invading Oslo (I think), Odin dying and Thor becoming king, something about Thor girl and Gargoyle.
Always wanted to know how the story continued... Maybe its time find out! Man wouldn't it be something if we had comic book shops.

It's so clear Jason Aaron stole from this run. A Lady Thor, other dark gods, Thor becoming King, etc etc. The difference is Jurgen's did it better and had better ideas to execute them.

Dan Jurgens is fine. His work on Superman with inks by Art Thibert is great. Here he wrote some cool stories. Thanos fight was EPIC. But Walt Simonson is the GOAT. He's the only one that can do whatever he wants on every title he touched. He turned Thor in a frog.....a FROG !!! I hopped with Thor on those issues....LOL

I seem to buy anything Jurgens puts out. He's never been labeled the best, but he's always solid. I think this run is tied for 3rd as the best Thor run.

I think Dan understands that the complexity of comics is best digested with a dose of simplicity. His time on Superman with Ron Frenz was absolutly brilliant. One day hell be gone like so many befor him and many will begin to see his brilliance.

Hey Perch and Joe! I thought Jurgens' THOR run was mostly fun and action-packed, though I found certain elements to be somewhat derivative of Silver and Bronze-Age Thor plotlines (Odin in chains, rainbow bridge destroyed, Hercules riding shotgun, Hela drooling over Thor's soul). I appreciated the mix of some Silver Age villains along with new opponents. I wasn't crazy about Thor being hamstrung with a human civilian identity again after Simonson showed us that you could write the character without one, but I was glad to see it faded away as the run progressed. Among the artist parade during this run, I believe John Buscema did an early issue and Jim Starlin got in there somewhere for an issue or two. I agree that between Defalco's largely homage-laden run and this one, there was a whole lot of godly suckiness within these pages in terms of story and horrendous art. Ironically though, this was about the time I started liking Romita's art a little less. He does render the massive, hirsute, godly frames in a way that invokes Colletta inking Kirby... But I also feel this was where his body forms started to display weird and awkward physical proportions, and his art in general came off as scratchy and sketchy, far from the flexible but solid forms he rendered during Nocenti's Daredevil run. Just my opinion. I agree that the Thanos/Mangog arc was definitely an early highlight of this run. I feel the Surtur issues should have been a bit longer and more cataclysmic, and Immonen's art for that storyline was very understated; I would like to have seen a grander sense of Armageddon. Thor becoming King of Asgard was a great sequence of issues. Overall, I liked way more about this run than I disliked. If Half of Marvel's current-day line was as engaging as this Thor Run, DC would be eating dust right about now. One can only dream...

If there was one part of the storyline where Thor takes over the Earth, it was that panel that showed that Thor had ripped out one of the columns from his throne room, and drove it through the Hulk's chest like he was a damned vampire.

It's a real shame than Jurgens doesn't get the due justice he deserves

  • @illithidlore

The overall run was great, but the Reigning really dragged on. We didn't need so many issues about a lobster fishing family.
Aaron shamelessly ripped Jurgens off with Gorr the Godslayer. Just beat for beat an edgelord version of Desak.
I wish we saw more of the characters introduced here return.
Oeming's Ragnarok at the end is absolutely brilliant. An absolute love letter to Thor mythos (especially Simonson). The art is beyond reproach and I don't understand why Divito never took over the industry.

Jurgens is one of the most underrated writers in comics. Maybe it's because I was a kid in the 90s but I love his stuff. His rebirth action comics run was really great but gets overshadowed by the tomasi run.

Of all the confusing endings to Perch videos, this one is by far the most low effort AND most confusing- well done Perch, this is impressive in the weirdest way! In regards to the topic of the video though, Jurgens Thor run was spectacular, the first run I read after starting with Green Lantern by John’s and Deadpool & Cable, and Deadpool by Waid (Deadpool for the Deadpool movie, GL because my roommate recommended it)

The entire run from 1 - 85 was very good, and the first bright spot since the Simonson run.
The only thing I'd say regarding this video is that the images needed to be more frequent and match the current discussion point.

These retrospectives are always great. I hate to request again but on the topic of Dan Jurgens, Underrated Runs (also by Dan Jurgens) and Captain America (who seems to be topical recently, not sure why), you guys should do a retrospective on Jurgen's Captain America run. Mainly because I'd like to hear Joe and yours take on Jurgens as an artist (he drew half of his Cap run while he was only the writer on Thor)
Also from a purely selfish standpoint, the omnibus for the Jurgens Cap is coming out soon and I'd like to know if I should pick it up or not, mainly since I don't see very much online talking about Jurgens's Cap run.

A really solid run IMO. For me, I actually think that Romita Jr. did a solid job with the pencils, particularly when it came to spreads, which It think worked particularly well here.

Jurgens' run was a breath of fresh air after the shit of World Engine. After DeFalco the title sucked ass. JMS was the last good run on Thor.

Was not following Marvel during this (20 year) period and only picked odd issues afterward. I had no idea there was any interesting work to developed Thor in any real way. I did not see Dan Jergens as a major writer and Kirby scholar I really will look it up. Was so disappointed with the decline in Thor immediately after Kirby's departure, and Stan and Conway took it over. Only Simonson's work ever caught my attention up to the reformation of the 2000s

I remember the 1st half of this run fondly. Too bad with the JMS run as it didn't end like they originally planned, a lot more to tell. Always remember the encounter with JRJR when he was signing #1 at a convention for me, I said how bold him & Jurgens were of bringing Thor back, then killing him at the end of #1..his response was "We did WHAT?!" 😂
