As ridiculous as this sounds, I prefer to read this than most modern comics.

Something with this sort of kid friendly, silver age insanity would also be something you could throw into Scholastic and the kids sections of book stores.

Guys, this was great! This reminded me of when you did the one issue retrospective on the FF4 wedding of Reed & Sue. I love when the two of you focus on one older issue and just have fun roasting it. More like this please!!!

You guys had me cracking up with this one. The cigar gimmick always reminded me of the Bugs Bunny short where he had to eat the carrots to become Super-Rabbit. I always loved the GBS era of Superman, especially after Steve Lombard is added to the work dynamic later on after this story. Thanks for going over this!

Good recap but you should have given more details on the 'Army of Tomorrow' storyline which was a pretty gritty and fantastic tale which had an entire generation of kids turned into mutants.
There was also a sequel where Perry almost dies and uses the last cigar to save his life.
As for lack of fun silliness in comics today, it's probably because the comics creators would be mocked for being childish if they did indulge in this.

Superman books clung to their Silver Age ethos longer than almost any other title or character, I think.

You should take a look at World's Finest 189-190, that's a story that's always bothered me. It's another "death" of Superman, but his organs are harvested to donate, they're stolen, and put in criminals. At the end is the creepy part, they find out the death was fake and so were the organs, the organs start failing and obviously at least the one with the lungs was going to die (and did). How could superheroes allow this to happen, even to criminals, especially small-time crooks like those? I read them when they first came out (yes I'm old), and it's always been a pretty dark story to me in a time when we had Krypto the Superdog, etc--a time of much lighter stories.

This was the very first Superman comic I ever bought, almost completely because of that great cover. I had started reading Sgt. Rock and the Marvel cowboy comics that year and was getting into DC superheroes that summer.

I bought this off the stands and loved it. Marketed for my kid-self and it worked.
If every comic back then was serious, where would the fun be?
    Whoa...
I have accidentally summarized the current comic industry.
Credit to Nick Candy for that excellent cover.

In the 70s, MORGAN EDGE, the head of Galaxy Communications, was now the boss of newsreporter /TV news anchorman Clark Kent and newspaper editor Perry White! Now that Perry was no longer Clark's boss, the two became good friends! BTW Morgan Edge was created by JACK KIRBY!
I LOVE DC during this period but I'm more of a fan of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (Martin Pasko and Dick Dillin), BATMAN (David Vern Reed and Ernie Chan or Irv Novick) and LEGION OF SUPER HEROES (Jim Shooter and Mike Grell or Dave Cockrum)! Those were my faves but the random BRAVE AND THE BOLD or SUPERMAN were also good! This could be a regular feature: a look back at various Bronze Age comics!
I think the Bronze Age begins with Kirby's departure from Marvel (1970) to The release of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS (1985)! During that period, The Goblin Trilogy was published, The Green Lantern/Green Arrow issues, the Stacys were killed, Batman got darker, Underground comics debuted on the West Coast meanwhile, the so called comic book "jobbers" who flew under the radar screen, still produced fun and exciting work...it was just a great time to be a comic book fan! Yes, Marvel may have outsold DC but DC wasn't as bad as one might assume and unlike the Pre Shooter Marvel, DC creators made their deadlines and the majority of the stories were inventive and confined to single issues!
Superman comic recommendation: I can't remember the issue number but it was called "The Computer With A Secret Identity!" I've been trying to track that one down for years! That and a new copy of SUPERMAN SPECIAL # 5 "The Second Coming of Superman!" I should have gotten the latter when it was only 10 bucks in the 90s!

This story today... it would like Perch said and then after those 24 issuea, it would began a 12 issues maxi-series, called "Great Caesar's Cigars" a deconstruction with him ending as cancer patient due to magic cigars, after that "Death of Perry White"a crossover event, another PTSD deconstruction about Perry's chemotherapy and how everyone is suffering due to his illness and with him committing suicide at the very end... Twitter would love it!

"What do they expect him to do, just pee on-" Given the Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex argument Perch, do you really want to go into that point of "just no!" return?
Also, I'm going to take it this was before they'd fully thought out the intricacies that Clark undertakes in order to properly hide his identity (slouching, more passive mannerisms and the fact he is aware of physics, and his own invulnerable state compared to human ability, thus "miscalculates" intentionally and comes out looking like a bumbler so as not to hurt anyone unduly)
I also have a memory of a Spider-Man comic (can't recall what specific issue) where Pete had to help calm down a young new mutant whose mom had died from too much smoking, and he calls them "Cancer sticks." So I guess they weren't quite at that point yet, with the mixed messaging.
