I needed this video 2 years ago. I made the mistake of buying a cheap Chinese eBay starter instead of repairing my old evinrude starter. You made it look easy.
I just did my starter yesterday before seeing your video. What I did for the brushes was to take two utility knife blades, one for each set of two brushes. Tape them down as tight as possible while pushing down on the brushes wrapping the tape beneath the brush housing. Put the cutting edge of the blades toward the outside of the housing to make it easier to remove the blades. After getting the housing in place simply un-tape each blade making sure not to get the blades caught inside the starter. Worked like a charm. Thank you for all of your videos Brandon. I'm learning something new every time.
Iv done a few starters myself and struggled getting the brushes in until the last time and I took the bendix off the top and inserted the armiture into the base plate first then slid the casing over the armiture from the top and then the top plate and bendix back on. Simples 😊
Just rebuilt the foot on my late 70s 70hp bigole johnson outboard ! Thanks for the tutorial video it helped me get it done.....I also used the gasket sealing compound lol.....
Hi Brandon, Dave S. here. Regarding the air silencer screws, they OMC , wanted you to use new screws because the screws came with micro encapsulated loctite on them. All I use is some blue loctite.A couple of times I have seen a screw come out and ended up stuck in the reed cage.
I took my 150 OMC starter to a local starter & alternator shop. $55 & it’s back in business. I thought that was a fair price considering the brush card is about $32.
took an old bono spreader the smaller one and it is stif enough and works awesome, used it for other starter motors as well, still looking for some help on my evinrude 90 horse not able to get spark yet cleaned all the plugs and flywheel pick ups
I had a Sea-Doo starter fail two years ago and the problem was the magnets broke loose. I was able to JB weld them back in place and get the starter back functional but I didn't want to trust it continuing to stay that way so I replaced it. Seems to me I made a video about the repair.
for the emery cloth . which did you use? fine, med or coarse? i tore down my starter to check it over and clean everything had 1 brush /spring that was stuck down causing a slow start issue. everything looks decent no real rust or anything bad
When I say I'm using Emery Cloth, that is a joke to myself because I'm not using Emery Cloth. It's just a fine sand paper, usually whatever I have at the moment, somewhere between 160-220
I have a 6hp evinrude fisherman with milky fluid coming out of my carburetor and there is water on my plugs coild this be a blown head gasket I’m lost any help would be great thanks awesome video btw
I have a problem with my bendix in a johnson xp 150, the bendix goes up but it goes down quickly and the engine cannot start any internal part of the starter that I can change?
After rebuilding my motor it doesn't spin at all. I found there is a shirt somewhere but only when the brushes are touching the coils. Any ideas what to do?
@@BrandonsGarage any 70hp in the years 73-78. i have the 1976 75hp stinger, that they used race on glasstron boats.. It pushes my71 17' Mako at around 29 mph with a 15x15 ss. hello guy, i know your knowledge about outboard, i got 115 hp johnson 1994 i saw your videis on how to. and i can t lift the back of the motor, the 2 back bolts are unscrewed and, it s stuck what can i do please, i have to replace 2 pistons and rings.
Yes, the detent balls will be a problem. Here is the tool: everythingoutboards.com/brp/tools/328081.html Check on ebay for one perhaps, as they are NLA. I cant give you the dimensions of the tube, but if you measure the OD of the prop shaft at its widest point, it should be all you need. Then some clever work with a grinder and youre in business.
luky me i allready needed to remove my carbs anyway my symtom where with new charged battery and jumper pack would still crank slow and main positive was geeting hot enought to smoke up the boat luky not light it up

Great to see a new outboard video👍
More to come!
Amazing they made it that easy to work on. Mine is working fine, but I kinda figured it would be a replace only item.

Putting those brushes in… genius!
Very informative and useful video. Thanks !

Brandon, when you first took off the black carb cover, the hose at the bottom, what was that connected to, and how did you connect it back? Thanks

I enjoy your videos. I laugh at your jokes like the starter hammer...harbor freight lathe.
Thanks 👍
First step you need in rebuilding a starter is: "Getting the willpower to actually do it"
7:32 do you have a Joghnson part number for that specialed starter core extraction tool?
I have a problem with my bendix in a johnson xp 150, the bendix goes up but it goes down quickly and the engine cannot start any internal part of the starter that I can change?
Where can I find a manual like the one you referenced??
Hello Brandon do u sell outboard parts,if so I’m seeing if you have a starter for a 1972 25hp Johnson, 11tooth clock wise rotation.
After rebuilding my motor it doesn't spin at all. I found there is a shirt somewhere but only when the brushes are touching the coils. Any ideas what to do?
Short*
I need one of those starter hammers
Just use your crescent hammer.
how bout a video on how to change the bendix gear??-prob simple but too simple for me
A new starter motor here is $500. Ouch. Gonna dismantle and clean tomorrow just in case it helps.
Yo Brandon, this is Brandon from Jersey. I would love to see a timing setting on a mid hp Johnson or 70 to 90hp 2stroke. Thanks
what year?

I would have tested the armature before any work. Only takes 5 minutes with a cheap multi meter
Collection of old starters, hahaha
I know a better technique to put the brush holder in the armature rsrsrs
