  • In this video I replace the starter on my 1996 Evinrude 150 outboard. This motor has been bulletproof! I really can’t believe it’s still running. If you follow my channel many years ago I did a number of videos on this motor. Well here it is again getting a starter replacement. I also replaced the solenoid, however not in the video. Please hit that thumbs up button if you liked this video and please consider subscribing. I’d really appreciate the support of the channel. I’ll be posting a 10 year old spark plug replacement in the near future on this motor.

    Well done. Thanks for the video. Mine has been squeeling. Left me on the water today. Going to check all connections and then proceed. Starter body was very warm after a few attempts to start. Solenoid would click but nothing moved. Going to look up model number and get parts on the way. Thanks.

    Thanks for the video. Very clear instructions. I did not realize it was so easy. I have a ‘99 150. After the boat sits on the trailer a couple days it that takes a few key turns for the starter to engage fast enough. Batteries are fully charged and clean. After that it starts all day long.
    I am going to check the connections for corrosion first. Thank you for making this video. Nice dock by the way 💪🏻

      Also, it seems like my bendix is sticking for a split second. Do you think I could lubricate it from the bottom without taking the flywheel cover off? Thinking a very light spray with the starter removed. Thank you.

      yes you can shoot some spray like corrosion block up there while the starter is off. seems like it couldn't hurt.

    Very nice and clear instructions. I have a similar Johnson and I thought it was the spring mechanism connecting to flywheel that was gone, but now I rather think the starter is bad since I have the same sound and it does not connect. Will just check connections so it is not a electrical issue

    • @bobbygfl

      Really the best test is to get a set of jumper cables and jump the negative terminal to your negative battery post. Then turn the key and see if it starts. Second test is run a positive jumper to the positive side of the starter and see if it starts when you hit the stud. If in either case it starts you have a wiring problem versus a starter problem. More often than not it’s a loose or corroded ground.

      @@bobbygfl I did exactly like that before I read it and found out that both starter and solenoid is working. I need new cables from the battery to the starter, so will buy some as soon as the stores open after covid lockdown here in Norway.

    I'll never have to do that but found it interesting just the same. Dropping anything in the yard or garage is bad enough but near water would be a disaster. Good job.

    Love this video. The engine looks just like my 1990 150 Johnson. So I think I need to replace my starter or solenoid or both. I was starting my boat a few weeks ago for the first time since last season. It cranked 3-4 times and then all I got was a clicking from the solenoid. I'm thinking it's the starter, but I don't want to play the parts game. Especially when the starter is anywhere from $150-$200 and taking it to the boat mechanic an hour away is $150 just to open the cowl and start exploring. Thoughts?

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  Год назад

      Battery good? I’d start there for sure. May be just low amps. Then check the grounds. If the ground is rusty it’ll not let full amps through the hot wire and you’ll spend a bunch of time tracing down your positive lead when it was the ground the whole time.

  • @notsure7874

    My 115 spitfire / intruder is VERY similar and hard to find info on. The differences? Mines not a "red plug" engine, and you have to take the top cover off to get the gear off the starter - it's not direct starter to flywheel, there's an intermediary bendix shaft and gear you have to wangle around, and it's too tight to get it out with the gear on the starter anyway.
    I would have been STUCK on a thing or two without this video since I didn't take pics coming apart!

    Nicely done video, thank you. My starter engages for a few seconds, turns the motor over, but then starts squealing very loudly. Sometimes it disengages, sometimes it stays engaged but still squeals. I can get the motor started but should address the issue. Is there a way to lube that bendix, without removing the starter, to see if that is the problem?

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  2 года назад

      Yes you have to pull that entire top off to access it. You can do that without removing the starter but it’s a job. So much work in fact that you should probably just buy a new one if you’re going to put that much energy into it.

      @@bobbygfl Interesting. Surprised to see that. I actually just recently bought one. The guy bait and switched me. Put a 94 in my truck, instead of the 96 I was buying (then blocked me, when I called him out on it). The Red Bulb was my 1st give away (then, confirmed by the Model/Serial, on the Tag). Anywho, I'm about to do this, as the Starter (and/or Solenoid) smoked, when I tried to turn it over for the 1st time. Fun times.... Thanks for a great vid. It's a bit different than my previous 1988 140. I was ready to take that top off. Not today, satan!

    How did you test your kid starter to see if it was bad? I just replaced my solenoid & still nothing

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  10 месяцев назад

      You have to touch the positive directly to the starter, bypassing the solenoid. it’s grounded so all you need is a jumper from the battery you could use jumper cables from your car. Just touch that terminal and if it spins it’s not the starter. be very careful not to hit anything else or it’ll spark violently

      I’d say I add 150 hours a year. The hour meter that I put on is at about 3000 hours. I installed it about 25 years ago. No idea how many hours were on it the first 3 or 4 years before I bought it. Crazy, never thought about it. Thanks for asking
