Awesome! Gauntlet 2 doesnt have an ending. Just goes on and on. Wish I knew that as a kid. Great job Mike! One of my favorites(limited number of co-op nes games)
Hi Mike, I never comment on anything anywhere, but I had to say I love your videos. Please keep doing what you do, and keep the stuff we grew up on alive. It just brings a smile to my face. Thanks!
Very true. I always sucked at this game to the point if rage quitting. Plus I legit don't remember alot of this but the nostalgia is still there for me.
I do not plan to beat them all. Just ones I’m interested in for whatever reason. But I will likely go back to games I liked for challenges like no death or whatever else.
I would say I've almost seen every stream all the way through since 2017, Love the content Mike, I can't believe anyone would attempt this ... but you did.
I played a ridiculous amount of Gauntlet 2 for Amiga 500 as a kid. I just booted it up...and it has like the same title screen as the cover art of the nes Gauntlet 1. Weird. I enjoyed it as a kid. Not great as an adult. It aged ok...this is like Diablo's great great grandfather. But it is just so monotonous. Same level for a gillion levels...then one with a dragon and a power up. Repeat for infinite. I wasn't even aware it had an end. I played Dark Legacy for either N64 or PS1 years later. I remember it was the game that was in the one time I took ghb. I didn't stop playing that for what seemed like days...because I couldn't.
Great Job Mike, that was definitely not an easy task, I love how you always disect and disenbowel the games you play where you learn every aspect and go from a few stages or so to then being a master at them with every stone unturned
That Gauntlet boot screen, if I could get a functioning 1970s style bar sign with. how? I imagine just use a crt and leave on the boot screen lol Now to make the drink. A little bit from every bottle and call it the Gauntlet as people fall over eachother trying to get to washroom in time.
1:17:19 playing games this retro is truly a dying thing, I imagine in the next 20 years there will be even less people doing this, it's sad. You beating this game is something historical in gaming as hardly anyone has actually seen this game beaten. In old magazines all people could do was take a polaroid of the end screen
They made the enemies as background tiles . Its makes it look like theres a ton of sprites . When in fact its animated tiles. Thats why the animation is so utterly Choppy with the enemies/. Your arrow scrolls smoothly across the screen but the enemies are click animated.
youre actually shooting the floor. if you notice the arrow scrolls smooth but the enemies are click animated. The only sprites are actualy the shots they fire and your arrow. and your sprite
Yahoo! Yeah Mike you did it!👏 I didn't know that trick about dragon that you can awake one head at a time neat to know. Good stream and cool video Mike!👉😃👈
I've been playing the arcade Gauntlet on the PS2 Midway Arcade Treasures compilation, and I've heard that Gauntlet 4 on Genesis is mainly a port of the original but with some improvements. It'd be cool if you compared and contrasted both versions at some point in a stream, do it all in-depth and such.
I was legit lost on so many levels of part one ( see what I did there) hopefully part two will kick my old age brain in and I'll remember more of what I am seeing. Sucks getting old
Hi, Mike! Regarding your question about video game-related books with historical information, you might enjoy "Final Fantasy V" written by Chris Kohler and published by Boss Fight Books. The author combines his personal experience discovering the game with insight from an interview he had with Hironobu Sakaguchi, Final Fantasy's director up through Final Fantasy 9. Sakaguchi's comments about game design from that time period, I thought were fascinating.
Gauntlet is a prerfect "old game", it looks kind of boring and simple, but when you start to play it it really grabs you in and is more than first meets the eye.
After 16 hours I thought Mike would have been more excited when he beat the game. I get it though, this was rough with having to start at room 83 every time.
I think the question than what game to bring on a desert island is a little dumb because there are online games and games within games and so on, so a much better question is what NES game to bring on a desert island. And I think Gauntlet might be it.
Hi Mike, Do you find that ports can be more enjoyable than the arcade version? Sometimes for me the aesthetics and gameplay feel of a consoles limitations are more appealing. Mrs Pac man or centipede on the 2600 oddly keeps my attention for longer even though I know they are nowhere near the arcade version.
Congratulations, that was a gauntlet indeed. I never knew this game was so difficult. I might rank it in the top 5 hardest NES games. So... deathless run when?
The words of warning in the instruction manual have spoken the truth! “Beware of being too greedy! If you collect more than 2,000 treasure, your password will not work.”
Could nvr get into the original gauntlets Rather stick with legends pretty much the definitive title Thinking of picking up seven sorrows Gotta request singing the tom & jerry kids theme song 😆
And so another one bites the dust in the NES library. Have to say that the thing that would annoy me the most about this game would be that your health gradually goes down like a time limit. The game is already difficult enough as it is without having an artificial time limit like that being introduced to stress you out. After Diablo and this game, it seems Mike has a tendency to choose the archer characters. A residue of making these games feel like run & gun games for you? LOL
watching these videos makes me want to play this game, It has been years.
Mike opens stream with saying he is near the end, checks video length. 7 Hours. Been waiting to celebrate this win.
Awesome! Gauntlet 2 doesnt have an ending. Just goes on and on. Wish I knew that as a kid. Great job Mike! One of my favorites(limited number of co-op nes games)
good to know
Alright, I've been waiting for part 2.
Hi Mike, I never comment on anything anywhere, but I had to say I love your videos. Please keep doing what you do, and keep the stuff we grew up on alive. It just brings a smile to my face. Thanks!
This is why I watch your content. I never thought anyone could beat this game.
it was hard as fuck
Finally caught up and watched the entire journey. Big congrats! Well done!
I didn’t think this game was beatable as a kid.
I remember not knowing what to do on this, Nice to see it played by someone who knows what their doing. 🏹
Very true. I always sucked at this game to the point if rage quitting. Plus I legit don't remember alot of this but the nostalgia is still there for me.
@@russellcampbell3500 💯 👍
Watched this on Twitch. This victory was pure dedication gg Matei 👍
5:20 Gonna eventually beat every NES game, like TheMexicanRunner?
8:24 That music sounded like one of the Battletoads songs.
I do not plan to beat them all. Just ones I’m interested in for whatever reason. But I will likely go back to games I liked for challenges like no death or whatever else.
I never understood what to do playing those gauntlet games as a kid
I would say I've almost seen every stream all the way through since 2017, Love the content Mike, I can't believe anyone would attempt this ... but you did.

That concludes Gauntlet 🎊
Time for Gauntlet 2
I wouldn't have so much stamina if it was me playing this game. Damn! Congrats!!
You can increase your stamina by eating the food which is scattered throughout the various levels, you noob.
That Gauntlet boot screen, if I could get a functioning 1970s style bar sign with. how? I imagine
just use a crt and leave on the boot screen lol Now to make the drink. A little bit from every bottle and call it the Gauntlet as people fall over eachother trying to get to washroom in time.

Amazing finish!
@2:59:20 Is that Data locking out the Enterprise?
always

this looks like absolute torture
I used to love gauntlet. Even had the tiger handheld game.
I'm impressed by the lack of sprite flicker. Especially considering all the moving things on the screen.
I believe it uses background tiles for the enemies
youre actually shooting the floor. if you notice the arrow scrolls smooth but the enemies are click animated. The only sprites are actualy the shots they fire and your arrow. and your sprite
52:46 talk dirty to me Mike
Congrats Mike on beating a very, very difficult game!! I watched every minute of you toiling and persevering through it!
Yahoo! Yeah Mike you did it!👏 I didn't know that trick about dragon that you can awake one head at a time neat to know. Good stream and cool video Mike!👉😃👈
I had no idea playing Gauntlet was so much like fucking calculus.
Hey Mike, any reason you cut out the full ending? I loved it so much.

What happened in the secret ending of Mike Matei Live?
Itsa Miky Mike time!!!! Yes !!!!
I had this back in the day never finished it tho
understandable. Its one of the hardest nes games
I was legit lost on so many levels of part one ( see what I did there) hopefully part two will kick my old age brain in and I'll remember more of what I am seeing. Sucks getting old

thanks for the reply🤓
Gauntlet is a prerfect "old game", it looks kind of boring and simple, but when you start to play it it really grabs you in and is more than first meets the eye.
Amazing!
"Why do you torture yourself so much with games like this?"
Because you often have to endure great suffering to get to where few have ever been
Mike would you recommend this over the arcade? or do you say Arcade All the Way?
i dont know id need to beat the arcade to begin to answer that
The good old days!
another great stream choice Mike, thx
Love you content man, I've been watching for a too long😅 just never commented. Love yah man.
Remember when you said this was your favourite title screen? Just wondering is it still your favourite?
After 16 hours I thought Mike would have been more excited when he beat the game. I get it though, this was rough with having to start at room 83 every time.
How about Gauntlet IV on the Genesis next?
eventually
Loves sweet mike

Very Cool

sometimes. Id rather play the NES ghosts n goblins than the arcade game.
Congratulations, that was a gauntlet indeed. I never knew this game was so difficult. I might rank it in the top 5 hardest NES games. So... deathless run when?
You should play through Kid Nikki 2 and 3 on stream sometime. They're both pretty hard, but they have some fun, unique mechanics and good music.
Damn!
Finished Gauntlet!
🎉🎉
I wonder if he'll ever play this game again after these streams
Oh, I thought it was time to look at a watch.
awesome. a testament to "practice makes perfect" now bring on second quest
doesnt have a second quest. But theres always gauntlet 2
Have you ever gone on a bender and played gauntlet on an arcade1up for 12 days?
How do your hands endure this beating.its a.i. not human!
This game is great. Try out gauntlet Legends on n64 sometime, me and my friends played that so much co-op back in the day
Hey Mike, have you heard of, or looked into Terraria? Pretty awesome game
I've heard of it and saw some footage years ago when it came out. I have never tried it.
The words of warning in the instruction manual have spoken the truth! “Beware of being too greedy! If you collect more than 2,000 treasure, your password will not work.”
The gantlent?
Holy shit .you did it
Did you beat friday the 13th yet
Mike did you know you look like Lupin III? And you sorta share personality traits.
Awesome 👍
It was 9 hours my guy not 6!!
Awwww, you had to cut out the song-a-thon that closed out the stream. Fucking RUclips and its obnoxious copyright enforcement.
I’m at full mast
The ideal viewer

Mike, Mike, Mike... Where is the serenade? We saw it on twitch, don't rob the archives of your other talents lol 🎵🎼🎶
read the description.
Genius @@mikematei 👏
Does the game have any good hacks? Or any at all?
it should.
53:55 - 🐵
Oooh!….Ahhhh!….Oooh! ….. Oooh! Oooh!…. Ahhhh!…. That really explains life, plenty of Oooh! Not a lot of Ahhhh!
why emulators? the graphics don't look authentic.
Cross another one off the list
50 enemies and no flickering
play Devilish: Ball Bounder
NDS :))))
Could nvr get into the original gauntlets
Rather stick with legends pretty much the definitive title
Thinking of picking up seven sorrows
Gotta request singing the tom & jerry kids theme song 😆
By far the most ridiculous game ever
I actually hated this game, it was so frustrating
I didn't have a clue what was going on. But wanted too. 😆
Basically Skyrim.
And so another one bites the dust in the NES library.
