This is one of the first three carts I had when I got the NES as a kid. It's an interesting idea for a game, but they only half delivered on the execution. You barely use most of the different jellybean types. The enemies are very limited. It seems like they gave up on the game design halfway through because half the treasures you can find in basically one spot. I don't know if they had time constraints on development or perhaps the game was too ambitious for the hardware, but it feels like the cavern area should have been much bigger with a lot more traps to solve in order to get all the treasures. There should also be more incentive to get the treasures to max out your weapon at the end, but you don't really need it for much. The platforming is pretty mediocre with the running momentum element not being particularly fun. The end boss is also pretty lame and it's not hard to get soft locked there if you struggle with the momentum aided long throw. The music is okay, but highly repetitive even though this isn't a long game. The graphics are overall meh and it's weird that most of background detail looks to be in the street and subway sections where you barely spend any time. The caverns, where you spend most of your time, are just a boring black. There is very little replay value. It was a frustrating game as a kid because you have little direction and I played my other two early games, SMB/Duck Hunt and Blades of Steel, a lot more. Replaying it as an adult, I can appreciate the puzzle solving element more, but the game's other issues become a lot more apparent.
Now that I see it, it *does* remind me a lot of Pitfall, with the multiple cliffs, plummeting, and leaps of faith you occasionally take. Crane certainly had a theme going, didn't he?
The reason your play throughs feel relaxing to me is because they bring me back to my childhood, to a simpler time. You remind me of a 10 year old next door neighbour I would have had back then that would come and play NES games on a Friday.
I still have my original NES Advantage. I was playing Fester’s Quest the other day with it after you were playing it. It’s way easier than when I was a kid. I never knew how to get very far back then
Mike is absolutely right. I don't know why but watching him descend into rage fueled profanity laden shouting matches with a game made 20+ years ago makes me feel better for some reason.
I just noticed the music at 1:30:15 Too long ago, too long apart She couldn't wait another day for The captain of her heart. As the day came up, she made a start. She stopped waiting another day for The captain of her heart.
I had this game growing up, this game and Monster Party are really memorable to me. There is a new Boy and His Blob on Steam and the Wii. "Dolphin" is a great emulator.
Hi, Mike! I wanted to pass along a few suggestions of NES games that might make interesting streams. Some of these you mentioned on previous videos you might like to come back to some day. Frankenstein (side-scroller with atmospheric gloomy visuals) Silkworm (horizontal shmup with a helicopter) Shadow of the Ninja (looked a little like Ninja Gaiden meets NES Batman) These are two that I'm very familiar with: Xexyz (side-scroller with shmup levels. To progress in the game, in each area, you will need to shoot a specific stack of 2 square blocks with a star graphic on the blocks. When this block is shot with your weapon 5 times, a door will appear in mid-air. Going into the door and defeating the boss gives the key to progress to the 'castle' stage that comes next.) Gargoyle's Quest II (to "fly" in this game, you can push "jump" once for the normal jump, then tap "jump" again to make Firebrand hover in mid-air. Pressing left or right on the d-pad will make him hover in a straight line in that direction.) I hope this is helpful!
Here's a stream recommendation, Mike. "Tenchu: Stealth Assassins" (PS1). It's challenging, fun, and reasonably short (6 hours playthrough with both characters).
I used to have A Boy and His Blob. Never knew you were supposed to go past the stairs and buy vitamins. I always used to just try to collect every treasure underground and wind up dying in the extensive underwater section with all the spikes.
I always liked this game despite when I was a kid I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Naturally the internet didn't exist back then either so you just kind of shrugged your shoulders and made the best of it.
Seems like Zelda is your frame of reference for a game to keep coming back to and learning a little bit from each time that began and framed your loved for games, but as a kid mine was Maniac Mansion. That game means as much to me as Zelda seems to mean to you. This game gives off that kind of vibe. Always wanted to play it as a child, but never got a chance to. Thanks so much for running through it and saving the frustration!
Yes! Maniac Mansion was great. I also liked Uninvited and Deja Vu but Maniac Mansion was the best. I’m guessing you’ve now also played Thimbleweed Park? Or Day of the Tentacle?
@@jillfriery4206Oh man, you're speaking my language! I love all those games you mentioned, and have beaten every newer Ron Gilbert game! The new Monkey Island was good too. 😀
I once randomly met David Crane and Garry Kitchen by complete chance at a convention, and got to spend about 4 hours talking to them about their founding of Activision and creation of this game and Pitfall. They're both seriously awesome guys, and I love that they're back into making new games. It was one of the coolest moments of my life.
12:15 Watching you play Wizards of Oz definitely made me try that game. 1st reason was to test if the game was really that hard or if you sucked at it, 2nd reason was to play on emulator to test the Toto number game to see if the RNG was possible to beat. I concluded that the game really is hard and that hour you spent trying to beat the RNG Toto mini game was wasted because It's nearly impossible to beat on emulator using save states trying 100s of times in a row, but it was fun watching you try.
This game is as classic as Wizard of Oz. Speaking of which Mike, when are you planning on doing your long promised No Hit No Death Run of Wizard of Oz on Super Nintendo?
12:10 for sure did! Your streams are very informative; they help me make an idea of the game and whether I want to play it or not :D For example, I tried Amagon after watching your stream; I regretted playing it, but it was fun to try.
Definitely an interesting concept A Boy And HIs Blob had. Though the music veers more into the annoying vein (especially that note...dum-dun-dum-dun-dum-dun-DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE; not as annoying as, say, Ikari Warriors or Adventures Of Rocky And Bullwinkle). Regarding your comment towards dark areas in video games: is your dislike towards them in general or do you not mind it as much if there's an in-game solution to light up the darkness (for example, some of the dungeon rooms in Zelda 1 are dark but you can light them up with the blue/red candle)?
We owned A Boy and His Blob as kids. We never beat it but it was a fun game with a cool aesthetic. The Boy and His Blob Collection, with GameBoy sequel, is coming to consoles. I won't get the physical version since it's 35 bucks and that's way too pricey.
I'd definitely say I've tried out games after watching you stream them, like Amagon or Rampart which I enjoyed. Kind of the opposite at the moment I'm playing the GB Castlevania games and I saw you and Ryan played em a few years back, those have been fun to watch
I really like this stream, glad you streamed it. This game was rather elusive to me because I saw it in the Club Nintendo magazine but never saw it in the shops. Watching your Druaga stream now, couldn’t catch the beginning because I had to go to the office today. Yeah good content.
Speaking of hacks Mike, Remember when you and Tony played smash remix? Do you also remember when you played Mischief Makers on stream? The main character Marina from mischief-makers was added to the mod
Mike you were talking about getting angry at a game that frustrates you and how people would react to it. For me it is entertaining to me because some of the same games you are playing i used to play them and get the same frustration.
Completely agree with you on lazy programming with invisible levels on games to make them harder. That is what made me hate donkey kong country as they had a level near that end that does that shit. I said it then that it was a lazy way to make one of the final levels harder.
Thank you for uploading this Mike. I like these charming oddball NES games like this one. I missed the stream so I'm glad I can watch it here! 😊 Sincerely "Treasure of the Rudras" on Twitch
I can confirm I played and enjoyed a lot of the stuff you streamed. For example next time I fire up MAME I'm gonna try Spin Master. Don't think I care enough to play this but I like watching it cuz it's a sorta historically important game & I'm curious.
Good game overall, definitely unique. But I will say the second world, Blobalonia, was both boring and frustrating, and largely anticlimactic in the end, at least in my experience as a kid. They could have done so much more in designing Blobolonia. Anyway, A Boy and his Blob for Wii is many times better. You should stream that sometime.
Mike, I work a 9-5 and I sometimes can't catch your streams. Thank you for uploading them. They bring me so much joy. You're the best

Might have to give this a try now. I got so lost and frustrated as a kid. Still have it. :)
Yeah unfortunately I don’t have the funds to play these old games. I really wish I could haha. One day I’ll be able to haha

The Air Man theme here is a 1985 song, "The Captain of Her Heart", by _Double_ .
I always liked this game despite when I was a kid I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Naturally the internet didn't exist back then either so you just kind of shrugged your shoulders and made the best of it.
Nintendo Power and other video game magazines were really helpful

I definitely play the games you play. They are much more fun to play when I understand them.
I watched Doctor Who on PBS in the 80's all the time.
There was guides for everything. The guides were like "way better than Nintendo power" if they cover the game at all.
