Cannibal Corpse bassist Alex Webster and singer George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher interviewed by Sam Dunn at Wacken in 2004 for the documentary Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. They talk about Cannibal Corpse's history of controversial lyrics and art and why it's important to stay brutal. This extended interview excerpt is presented raw and uncut, with new director's commentary.

I met George in 2009 right before a CC concert...he's the kindest dude ever. We had a little talk about music, took pictures, he signed our records and invited us to join him at the bar after the concert to have a drink. I offered him some of the wine I had and he said "I never drink before a show"...with that voice :D
Then they took the stage and started with Evisceration Plague. The place went absolutely crazy in like 10 seconds. I still got chills when I think about it.
I remember I was impressed by how big he is...I mean, this guy could easily kill someone with just his hands.
I'll never forget that night. One of the greatest bands on the planet. Not a fucking bad album in the entire career, including the new one.
They can't possibly be worth that much are they? Death Metal isn't that popular is it? It'd be really cool, yes, but I had always thought in order to have that kind of money, you need at least a #1 song somewhere on the charts in a more accessible genre, like what Led Zeppelin does for example.
Cannibal Corpse is #1 in Death Metal the way I see it. So I think they are worth at least 1-2 Million each over their career. Which is pretty damn good for music in general. :)

Their net worth is 55 million. They are almost a 30 year old band. CC fans eat up all their merch, albums, shirts, box sets, vinyl collections. There are a well marketed band. I know its crazy but not unbelievable. Last I heard, their appearance fee is 25k/show. I worked at a concert hall when they came to town a couple times.

I met Cannibal Corpse in 2010. Alex was out and about around the tour bus and around the fans after the show. Such a cool and down to earth guy

right when someone can't put together a coherent sentence he shouldn't be interviewed at all maybe a few yes or no questions would suffice
I love Cannibal Corpse lyrics but I wouldn't hurt a fly. It's called art. Art is about pushing boundaries, self expression, and inspiration. This band is just awesome to me
I think it’s amazing that guys in a band called Cannibal Corpse are some of the nicest guys in metal.
When all you do is scream your head off everyday and play music about violently murdering people you get all the anger out of your system and all you’re left with is fuzzy feelings.
I find it hilarious when people give CC shit for never changing their sound, but also shit on 'tallica and other for doing something different. Either it's okay for every band, or no band, personally i love CC and don't mind the fact that all their albums sound similar, it's good music plain and simple

I totally agree. It's the same thing with AC/DC for example. Love it or hate it, it works for them. They are beyond popular and people like it so why change their sound if it works. CC is brutal and they are still on the same formula and it is awesome. I don't mind the least either. If I want something a bit different, there are plenty of other great bands. I think there are few bands that can manage to pull off having the same sound and still be great
I agree. Most bands that try to experiment with another style (AND waste an entire album with said style **cough Suicide Silence**) fail MISERABLY and end up taking a left turn and getting a less than desirable reaction from fans. Experimentation only works if you are 100% certain it's going to blend in and work with your sound and not drift way off from what your established sound is. Cannibal is one of the most consistent bands in their genre. They're so far into their career that they don't need to drastically experiment with anything. I'd rather a band just keep busting out the material they're good at and be consistent than try to be five different things at once and wreck their reputation/ signature style and turn into a crapostrophic mess

Cannibal Corpse is simply the kind of Death Metal band that writes music and lyrics based on gory topics for FUN. It's like Iron Maiden would sing about ancient history, for instance.

The number one thing I’ve always taken from this is how awesome it is that Corpsegrinder is such a proud supporter of his craft. Not heavy metal - ‘we play death metal’. Exactly how I feel. I love death metal more than any other music by miles and have for over 20yrs, and I proclaim it proudly. Just always makes me a bigger fan of CC to see them be not just one of the best at playing death metal, but also at supporting it.

its a word I always use when describing something I really love musically whether its a riff I'm trying to write or listening to a song within Death Metal , ppl tend to think when I say "disgusting" that I mean it in a negative light but its actually quite the opposite, means its fucking brutal and that I want more! XD

Love this older footage! It is just straight forward man, they do it for the sake of playing brutal metal and they are in fact the death metal titans! They prove album after album that they will not let up and we love that about them. In my opinion, one of the greatest bands to see live. Cheers Banger \m/

I'm lucky that I got Cannibal Corpse to sign my copy of Metal: A Headbanger's Journey back in 2015.
I absolutely love just how original these guys are. No filter, no censorship, just plain honesty about their music. Whenever I think about death metal, Cannibal Corpse comes to mind first. All hail. \m/
if CC is in your area go see them live. they put on the best shows i have ever seen. they come to my town almost every year and i always get tickets.

one of the greatest in all of metal, but I remember it was difficult getting into their music at first, now their are one of my favorites.

It’s cause the camera has a wide-angle lens which warps/distorts images towards the edges of the frame. His head warps too when it gets in the far right side of the frame.

Ah, good ol' 2004. I went out to my local record store and bought "The Wretched Spawn" album that year. I couldn't wait for the release! The store had a little post-it note covering the graphic stuff, and it made me want to buy the album even more! Good times going to local record shops. Its a shame nobody really does that anymore. Man, Corpsegrinder's voice is shot just speaking in the interview & this man clearly knows what he's doing as far as DM vocals go, considering he's been doing this for over 30 years now. It just fucks your vocal chords doing those vocals on tour day in and day out. Makes me happy with my choice to just play guitar😂 I don't envy what vocalists have to deal with to do what they do. Drummers too! Being a drummer, particularly a metal drummer, would be exhaustingggggg. Playing a single song in a set would be a workout.

That Corpse Grinder "tree-ring-neck" comment was absolutely BRILLIANT!
I totally agree with their viewpoint on never changing the core of their sound, yet "perfecting the machinery" more and more with every concurrent album. Much like Meshuggah, Cannibal Corpse has basically become a fine-tuned sledgehammer.

Any time a death metal fan says they don't like Cannibal Corpse or Dethklok it screams "hipster" to me. My generation was introduced to this music by their scene in Ace Ventura and the next generation by Metalocalypse. Sure there's stuff that's heavier, more technical, etc., but these guys are still awesome.
They came to my country once, and stayed to have a beer with the fans after. Metal community is amazing.

I feel like people just need to understand that musicians are storytellers. Some storytellers like to write about roses and love and sparkly things, others like to write about horror, death, mutilation, etc. Doesn't mean they believe in that, it's just something that interests them. And some people don't like horror movies, that's ok too. Doesn't mean you're bad, doesn't mean the music's bad, just means it's not a good fit.
I hope they write some ballad soon..

Literally the most consistent fokking band on earth, hands down. I used to be really scared by their music way before I saw any band photos, not even knowing what they looked like. So a lot was left to the imagination. I was legit intimidated by Corpsegrinder in the hammer Smashed face live footage. If I were to fast forward straight to now to find a video the vocalist of CC shopping at Toysareus I would've literally fuchin fainted.
Great thing about Cannibal Corpse is that I don't even know why I like this band. I just enjoy death metal. That's it.
