"The cool dude at the bar that knows everyone" of metal. Love his thoughts on drum sounds and production. Early Black Sabbath had the perfect production, heavy and sinister with a great dynamic range, lot of breathing room. A lot of drum sounds in metal today don't even sound like drums, kinda takes some of the energy out of it for me.
I like BM. I wouldn't say I am a huge fan of it but I love Fenriz. What he says at the end about primitivism and compression is dead on right! Not just about BM, or metal or even just music. About modern life itself! As a metaphor. Modern needs chopping off the highs and lows and making everything mid just to satisfy the needs of modern formats. Fuck that. That is why things like primitive art is more important now than it ever has been. We are human with natural highs and lows and don't forget that!
I love raw black metal and hearing unprocessed and unmastered demos, but I also love bands with a loud and polished production. It all depends on what style of music you are playing - there is, and should never be any rules to music. That's what makes it great.
This is why Fenriz and Darkthrone has always been my favorite. It’s honest!!! He just loves the music!!! He loves playing the music!!! None of this bullshit satanic image that scares the kids and pushing backlog sales (see: Ghaal). He lives.... for the music. End of story.
Wat? they are among the harsher of the bunch. Bands like Burzum and Ulver have atmospheric / ambient parts, whereas Darkthrone and Mayhem are straight to the point BM with little to no variation.
I think "easy to listen to" is due to the more groove-centric nature of Darkthrone. It's lineage is very Celtic Frost-y, the atmospheric stuff from Burzum for example can put people off I think.
Let's agree to disagree, the music itself is indeed staright to the point and cool to listen! But the rocordings, jesus, there are intricacies on "A Blaze In the Northern Sky" and "Transylvanian Hunger" that you literally take over 20 listens of the songs to catch ONLY because the recordings are really fucking rough, that part aint easy to listen but sure grows on you!
HELL YES. YOU sir are the first person I've found thinking so. Crionics is THE Slayer song and you will marry me. Hell I listen to it every fucking day.
"Show No Mercy" has always had a combination of atmosphere and melody that is unlike anything I've heard in thrash metal. Spiritually it's more akin to Iron Maiden trippin' on demon possessed mushrooms than it is to "Kill Em' All" or any other thrash metal records of that time. Reign In Blood kicks ass for what it is, but it's not NEARLY as dark or atmospheric as either Show No Mercy or Hell Awaits.
+Toten Kommando even though Varg wrote on Transylvania and Panzer. In the movie Till The Light Takes Us. They walked into Euro shop and everyone was in "ahh". They were metal
+E Jöhnsön Celtic Frost and Hellhammer were early 80's. Unless you mean the drummers Frost and Hellhammer, in which case the answer is a simple "no". Hellhammer's style is very death metal and Satyricon were followers, not initiators.
That was the reason Hellhammer was brought into Mayhem because he could play blast beats. Frost was also with 1349 which also is part of the make up of the Norwegian Black Metal scene. I also for Faust even though we got to hear his drumming for one album
Spaghetti Horror - Varg is outdoor survivalist agrarian poser. He pretends his life style reflects that while he gets obese and lives off his royalties .
+Corpsie Compression swallows up all the highs and lows and makes everything balanced, but because of that, things sound stale. There are times on the new Stratovarius album Eternal where Timo Kotipelto's voice is crying to be let out of it's cage but the music in the background just overpowers it... because it's compressed WAY too much.
@@containternet9290 Oh don't get me wrong, i didn't mean in a positive way regarding Varg. Varg is pretty delusional and has very weird takes on basically everything, but what makes him interesting is that he believes every word he says.

"The drums sounded best in the 70es." Well compression was widely used on all of those records. It is vital for representing the natural sound of the instruments and a proper dynamic range in a mix. Compression is not the problem. Overcompression is.
@@Koraxus Well, not exactly. I get yer point tho. I own a house but I had to spend about... hmm... 5-6-7 years or so saving up like 5-7k and then dump it all and now I'm broke again but making things work. I bought it with a family member so it's easier because we split it and have roommates. But yeah, musicians living in apartments... Ya do what ya got to do... But come on, that shouldn't be the 'goal'. Set goals and try yer best to achieve them, like getting out of living in apts. Musicians will be heavily stunted by those living conditions, unless they have another musician's house to go jam/record/write at or whatever. At the same time, I get it, money aint easy in this messed up world. Know that all too well. If we only make like 800-1200$ paychecks, well, we should be able to afford to live in an actual house, not apartments, off of that. Apartments really should be priced no more than like 300-400$ monthly given what you actually have to live in in that close proximity to other people. But this is a messed up world. I get that money is not easy, but that honestly isn't my fault. I'd recommend complaining to your/our terrible government that makes us so impoverished, but tbh they're not gonna care if you complain to them. Keeping us impoverished and poor is likely the goal, for the most part/the vast majority of us. We shouldn't even need credit or loans (borrowing money we dont own ourselves) to afford to buy a house and our own property. Imho, if u work a job and hold it down for 5-10 years, you should be able to afford a house of your own/property, no ifs ands or buts. And the fact that isn't the case, in modern day, says there's something really wrong with the governing system in place which controls all of this stuff, not you and me who controls it, we just suffer through "the fun" of it lmao
the corpse paint is a pain in the ass but i feel like that's part of what keeps Black Metal primal, especially when blood is involved. it's war paint, it helps get you into the mindset. not saying you can't get into that frame of mind without it but rituals r set in place just for that. to condition & bring out what's inside. just my personal thoughts, i don't make black metal or music so i probably don't know wtf i'm talking about.

I recently watched a 2019 interview with him and I swear to the gods he doesn’t Fucking age. Neither does Nocturno. Total babes at almost 50 🤣
Scares the kids? Isn't that the fucking point?
lol you like metalcore, nerd
I only clicked on this because of Fenriz.
Darkthrone are the most enjoyable/easy to listen to Norwegian black metal. Love them :)
Wat? they are among the harsher of the bunch. Bands like Burzum and Ulver have atmospheric / ambient parts, whereas Darkthrone and Mayhem are straight to the point BM with little to no variation.
I think "easy to listen to" is due to the more groove-centric nature of Darkthrone. It's lineage is very Celtic Frost-y, the atmospheric stuff from Burzum for example can put people off I think.
reb1138 Mayhem and Darkthrone are very different
Let's agree to disagree, the music itself is indeed staright to the point and cool to listen! But the rocordings, jesus, there are intricacies on "A Blaze In the Northern Sky" and "Transylvanian Hunger" that you literally take over 20 listens of the songs to catch ONLY because the recordings are really fucking rough, that part aint easy to listen but sure grows on you!
If you want harsh stuff try Ildjarn.
He's a really cool dude!
rockomundo he's like me only cooler
rockomundo how do you know? Do you know him him? Exactly stfu
@@davidblair3845 I suppose you see yourself in him.
3:15 I saw a video of Kerry King recently and he struggled to play The Antichrist
Crionics is the greatest Slayer song.
Wolfgang Von Poserkila I think The Final Command takes that cake
Final Command is up there with the best for sure
We have a true metal fan lmfao
My favorite on Show No mercy. The riffs on that track could be interchangeable with early Metallica.
HELL YES. YOU sir are the first person I've found thinking so. Crionics is THE Slayer song and you will marry me. Hell I listen to it every fucking day.
“Typewriter drums! Get it on, man!”
was that a Celtic Frost reference at 0:45? awesome interview, thanks for this!
0:45 Celtic Frost reference \m/
blaze is one of my fav black metal albums....it is as vamperic as it gets.
True
There's only one guy i would love to have a beer and chat about this and that, and of course is Fenriz.
Who cares who would Mrs.XYZ want to meet and have a beer with. Waste of time.
I would too.
Only one guy? Really?
Not me? :(
@@nr655321 shut up

Proud to say I’ve seen Fenriz dj’ing at Bunkerfest 2013 afterparty in Oslo!
He gesticulates like us, Italians! È adorabile Fenriz!

SIPS WINE ONCE MORE... "FREEDOM"...

*2 min death stare*
Fenriz and quorthon are defintley 2 people who really influenced the black/death metal history and 2 amazing people Rip quorthon!
Fenriz mentions Neil Young - love it!
Sir this is a wendy's
@@lmao7439 lmao
I would say hell awaits has the darkest atmosphere of all slayer albums.
Thank-you, this is great to listen to, to be reminded of greatness.
Between Fenriz, Frost and Hellhammer those guys are the foundation of Black Metal of the late 80's and through out the 90's
+Toten Kommando tell us
+Toten Kommando even though Varg wrote on Transylvania and Panzer.
Finally, a longer version of the interview! Hails Fenriz!
"A continuation of the shittiness"… lol.
I’ve said it dozens of times and I’ll say it forever - this man is a Norwegian national treasure and should be protected at all costs.
Dammit man, this was WAY too short. I want to know more about his ideas of what metal should be, the production and so on.
Crionics is probably my favorite song from show no mercy.
Yeah its great and Metalstorm/Face The Slayer. Well, the whole album is the best they ever did. Of course the EP's, Hell Awaits are good too.
Varg: “He was always drunk”.
Spaghetti Horror - Varg is outdoor survivalist agrarian poser. He pretends his life style reflects that while he gets obese and lives off his royalties .
Fenriz: "Varg will always be a great guy." (from _Until the Light Takes Us_ )
S K Fenriz was everyone’s friend.
@@golz9785 Boohhoo😭😢😭😢
This guy is so likeable. I can listen to him all day.
In 1860, this guy would've been the conductor of an orchestra.
Yes, Joshua, I watched the whole video.
i had high hopes for this interview. oh well
williamgatesenson Me too damn it went fast!
Damn! That episode on extreme metal was done in 2013! Where did that time go?
Fenriz kinda looks like a young Santa Claus
Scandinavian Prince he is satan claws..
johnny vietnam
Santa is Wotan!
I never noticed that until now.
I'd be more than happy to have this Santa Claus, you know. 😉 Screw Me with your candy cane, Santa baby! *growls like a wolf approvingly* 🤘
Fast forward to 2020, he looks even more like Santa lol
It almost seems like he's talking about the levels of the vocals in the mix and not compression of the signals.
+pilotamurorei - I know what is compression
Fenriz and Vikernes are by far the two most interesting guys from the early Norwegian black metal scene.
Just Fenriz.
Varg was pretty much a poser.
@@containternet9290 Oh don't get me wrong, i didn't mean in a positive way regarding Varg. Varg is pretty delusional and has very weird takes on basically everything, but what makes him interesting is that he believes every word he says.
@@chikitabowow Varg says and unsays things all the time and he truly seems to believe them. So I wouldn't say he's just a poser, he's more like pathological lier.
just eight minutes of this man speaking is not enough.
0:53 fenriz: ah shi here we go again.... oh!! nevermind
Dear Banger-Folks, if you ever get the chance to do a lengthy (Like 2 hours or so) interview with this guy, I would watch it with sooo much pleasure. With other figures as well, but with him, would be great. I just leave that thought here. :) Cheers
"Mesmerized....!"
AHAHAHHAHAHAA Fenriz is awesome
He only said that so as not be straight up. He really likes being indirect as possible.
Someone suggested in another video to put Fenriz and Abbath together in a podcast. Just here planting seeds
"The drums sounded best in the 70es." Well compression was widely used on all of those records. It is vital for representing the natural sound of the instruments and a proper dynamic range in a mix. Compression is not the problem. Overcompression is.
Fantastic, I’m with 100% on the 70’s drums sounding the best. With “bonded by blood” treatment, is he talking about the album or the band?
Only Fenriz can make the words "building blocks" sound epic. 🤣🤣
This man is so chill
I agree with his philosophy on drum sound 100%
Boo samples
Yay real drums.
it's hard for us in crowded apartments to get drums tho
@@Koraxus Dont live in apts. Rent a house with other musicians or build credit and buy u a house w a partner or musician bandmate friend whatever
@@Xbuster6 just be rich right?
