Some people derive more enjoyment from being mad at something than liking it. The rise of outrage bait RUclips channels shows there is a big market for negativity.
Yup. I just finished Far Cry 6 a few weeks ago (had such a good time with it by the way) and saw someone uploaded a video a few months ago with how hard Far Cry 6 flopped. Of course, hundreds of thousands of views. Rage bait = clicks = money. The game came out 2 years ago, move on lol.
The platform was basically built off of shitting on video games. With AVGN and all his copy cats, Game Grumps who are infamous for playing games they know they don’t like. While entertaining, like most humor, the longer it goes on the less ironic it becomes.
I'm not sure its joy, it is that people aremore likely to instantly do thing in response to rage then they are to steady, pleasant joy. Angry people are very vocal and exciting
This is true for most games, but the Halo fanbase is one of the worst. Never have I seen a fanbase that loves to hate the newest releases so much. It's not a new 343 thing either, it's been a thing since Halo 2.
I actually think most people that only play those games don’t even really think about the broader industry since most people that play games in general do so casually and don’t think about it beyond the surface level entertainment (which is perfectly fine). And if they do they generally direct that hatred toward the game that they refuse to just stop playing despite not liking it. You won’t find someone who hates cod more than the person who plays it for 1000 hours.
@@R17759This is exactly right, I play fifa every single year and everyone else who I know who plays it hates fifa and actively looks forwards to other game releases to have a break from the fifa cycle. I think the ‘Fifa and COD’ players actively enjoy games like Elden Ring and other games way more because of their hatred towards the games they play the most
Something the food industry has known for decades. Many times i have a noticed a pattern of rude supermarket employees at certain times of the month where people have just gotten paid as if they were trying to get customers angry so they would buy more since it did not make sense they would want to lose their customers.
Here is the answer Allanah. All social media including RUclips have changed their algorithm to rewards negativity- so your favourite content creators now makes more money when they complain about bad games than talk about good games, this give's the impression that everything is bad because viewers just see negativity day in day out
@@ms3862 The algorythm is an adaptive system that learns from actual user data though. Nobody programmed the algorythm to promote negativity, the algorythm just sees that negativity gets more engagement, so in response it starts to push it forward more and more.
Chicken! On a more serious note, I can't tell you how happy I am that you mentioned Future Redeemed. It was my game of the year and didn't get near enough praise or talk from the mainstream outlets.
I used to buy battle passes for games a couple years ago and when I had so many in so many games I realized I can’t keep up with it and gave up. Only a couple months later I realized that I was just hella addicted to FOMO stuff and started to feel better about missing out on the other new stuff because I preferred just logging in and playing whenever I actually wanted to.
yes, me too. I suspect we are not in the normal curve here but I feel exactly like that. I got a battlepass with D4 and I stressed so much about completing it. It became stressing! Instead I think I should play what I like and how I like it, dont be afraid of missing out on the battlehype
i think as more time goes on the more people will come to same realisation... or new gamer kids will be created and the process will continue. either way, seeing people can fall for the trap, but get out of it, is low key giving me hope. Good on both of yous for breaking out
@@CrazyGaming-ig6qq I looked up and apparently when you buy a battle pass you have to reach the rewards in a specific limited amount of time, otherwise you'll lose them forever. Which is insane to me, considering that YOU PAID REAL MONEY for that pass. A timed system like this would be fine (although frustrating and not fun in the long run) for a completely free game, not one that you pay for. If you pay, you should have all the time in the world to reach the objectives, at your own pace. Just like you do in a "traditional" paid game. I can't fathom why people is willing to pay money for that.
Same I haven't bought one in a long time now, it makes whatever game you are playing feel like a chore and ruins the experience. I play multiple games based on my mood, so being tied down to one game does not work for me. The only game I have ever seen do the battlepass correctly is Rainbow six siege. In that game your pass doesn't end at the end of the season, you have the choice to activate whichever battlepass you want and progress through it at your own pace, so there is literally no FOMO. In a full price game there should be no FOMO imo. Plus whatever happened to earning and unlocking challenges that reward you with cosmetics? Now everybody has all the same shit, that doesn't show off your skill level or how much you have played. The older Halo games used to do this really well with armor sets that made you stand out as a really good player.
You were in the ideal scenario for subscription service: So many things to do, so little time, eventually you slip up and the money you spent was wasted, exactly how the companies like it. I have to be honest: I myself pay for Destiny 2 expansion which is a form of subscription, but that is the only game I pay a subscription for. (I play on PC as well so console subscriptions are excluded)
For a tl;dr, just read the last paragraph lol "Why signal boost the bad so much..." Because if we don't make people aware of these issues, then the issues multiply, exactly because people will not vote with their wallet. My cousin doesn't watch a lot of youtube and isn't immersed in gamer culture and he was about to buy that "Day Before" game. Many people buy games based on nothing but the cover art on steam or a short description. They don't look up reviews. Signal boosting the bad news about games is how we reach those people. And your point about people playing the wrong games, I don't think that's entirely honest. People are upset because they are promised a good game, one they would enjoy, and then getting delivered some hot horse shit. People are upset that the game they DO like is littered with microtransaction p2w bs that ruins an otherwise good game. Some people may have a limited horizon but so what? Who is anyone to say that someone who only wants to play soccer games needs to expand their horizon? That person isn't interested in RPGs or shooters. They want soccer games, it's what's fun to them. And the only choice they have is Fifa for high quality games in their niche. And Fifa is full of predatory business practices up to and including literal gambling. They can't be upset because their horizon isn't expanded enough? Why? "Gamers are already buying microtransactions and battle passes..." Maybe that's because we don't signal boost the bad effects of these practices enough? I reckon most people who do buy battle passes and such either 1) don't care about how ethical they are either way, 2) are uninformed of why they're bad, or 3) have more money than sense and don't care how much money they spend. The first one can't be fixed, the last one is a tiny fraction of players but the second one can be helped by talking about bad games, why they're bad, and how the microtransactions and battle passes contribute to that. And especially, by bringing to the masses the acute awareness that they CAN vote with their wallet. Many people are upset at battle passes, but they buy them anyway because they think "I'm not gonna make a difference anyway" or they were never taught about market economics and don't know that them buying battle passes leads to more battle passes. Hell, a lot of gamers are kids who just want the shiny new thing and their parents are clueless enough to buy it. Again, this is helped by actually being exposed to content about bad games. Especially in the case of parents, this is only possible by signal boosting it as much as possible, so that it somehow reaches mothers who stay on the knitting side of youtube and fathers who watch shows about Alaskan fishermen. You told your viewers not to preorder games. I reckon at least a few of them will take your advice and reconsider on that preorder they had placed. I personally stopped preordering because I watched TotalBiscuit growing up and learned from him. You prevented someone from preordering by talking negatively about games. That's my point in a nutshell. Talking badly about bad games and practices is how we educate people and make them vote with their wallets. The problem you identified is solved by the very thing you're saying is another problem.
The idea of a (once) journalist saying "don't signal boost the bad" is ironic. Given the whole point is to point out the good AND bad. And if you're aware something is bad, that people are anticipated for (i.e. not something only 2 people are aware of), it's your job to point it out. If you're purposefully avoiding it, you're elevating the companies above the viewers/readers you're supposedly trying to cater to.
The "algorithm" will push things similar to what you interact with. It's very rare for me to open RUclips and see garbage. It's very rare to open Steam and see garbage. Y'all crying about the algorithm are either hypocrites or just don't understand how it works. My guess is the first one for most people cause they don't want to admit that they like the garbage.
"Chicken" as a word plays in my head in a very particular way, namely the announcer on Tekken 3 Tekken Force mode saying "chicken" every time you pick up a chicken from the floor to restore health.

So which team are you on? Oh you changing sides now? Oh yea and there are those other lesser known games too. Oh you are aware, you just don't have time for them? Oh ok.
so freaking based comment from a channel having Morgana as their profile picture. there are good games out there but maybe not that many from western studios.
Being an older gamer I feel this has been happening for quite a while. Could it be it's just more noticeable now for some reason? Anyways, have a chicken and thanks for your content.
Chicken!!!! THANK YOU!!! Someone finally said it! It's honestly so exhausting even on social media when people do nothing but clout chase for views rather than talk about what we care about games

Go to any gaming subreddit and I swear everyone is so cynical about even great games. Like talk about how great BG3 is and the cynics will be quick to point out bugs in the second half of the game. Talk about any bad game and it's a colossal circle jerk.
@@marzoval9551 Yeah that's even how it is with my JRPG group we have people who will LOVE a game and then there's some whacko cynic coming in because they got mad at certain dialogue being written
There’s a game called Persona 3 Reload coming out and I’ve been inundated for a year with “P3 remake problems” or “I don’t like P3 remake/P3 remake is bad”. It’s insane cuz it’s about a game that hasn’t even come out yet. A lot of complaints become completely outdated when new info comes out cus the OG video was based off incorrect info or assumptions due to lack of info. I get being worried but it’s insane how many complaints ppl will have for a game they’ve never played so they can go in being biased and upset.
A lot of us are struggling with the idea that we once loved something and now we don't. Music, films, games, books - it doesn't really matter. Some of us learn to love these things when we are very young, and as we grow we move beyond them. But it's hard to accept that you might simply have more demands than the medium can possibly meet.
I’ve come to accept that and I think I’m actually starting to enjoy movies and games more because of that Years ago I used to have a very critical mindset about what movies or games I enjoy which meant I spent far too much time discussing and arguing about them rather than actually enjoying them, but now I’m a working man and it’s made me come out of that phase of life and realise that now I’m less critical about things than I used to be and now I play games or watch shit for my personal enjoyment rather than trying to give it a rating or brag to people online about my knowledge of media
@@RaymondStormbl3ssed Make the most of this phase of your life. There may come a time when some games are just beyond you, and complex movie plotlines are impenetrable! Maybe you'll be lucky and have all your faculties well into your dotage. For me, the war is nearly over! lol I'm tending towards games that I have loved for a long time, and finding new games (especially the big AAA titles) increasingly annoying. I just wanna have fun, and maybe a few good laughs! Is that too much to ask for?
it seems we have an obsession with bad games. neverknowsbest's take on it is very enlightening - never would have known the gollum game actually had potential, as bad the end product turned out. the video made me realize just how much influence we get from reviewers/youtubers and how much of the content gravitates towards the bad parts
Well said; with Armored Core 6 and Baldur's Gate 3, not to mention Phantom Liberty and the 2.1 patch finally making CP77 feel "complete" (though still buggy) to me, 2023 has been a great year for gaming in my opinion. Thanks for the recommendations and Happy New Year, chicken.
I'm going to be honest, I've tapped out of gaming. Because I don't like modern games. I used to complain about it, but I've accepted it. I still consider myself a gamer because I still play games. I play classic, retro, and vintage games. I'm playing through Max Payne at the moment and I'm loving it. There's plenty in my backlog to keep me occupied for years. Replaying games from when I was a kid or ones I didn't get around to. So, no, I still maintain modern games are crap. I'm not going to be a negative nancy and list why and go on a tirade. But there's far more for me in older games than new ones. I realised when I played Spider-Man PS4 and everyone told me it was the greatest thing ever and I was just bored. That's how I describe modern games: boring. Chicken.
Yup. People need to install some older games and just compare. they wouldn´t dare to include paintless climbing spots in modern games. It always has to be painted in yellow or white for you. they wouldn´t dare to include balancing over a ceiling with total control over your character in modern games. they wouldn´t dare to include jumping with total free roam control so you can fail if you did not time it right. Older games pre 2013 do not have this stupid x-ray vision which negates all the tension playing the game. Modern games also forgot to include gameplay within 10 minutes of starting it. It always needs to have some 5 minute cutscene, 5 minute of useless walking, 5 minutes of standing and listening. IT IS SO FUCKING ANNOYING. I literally compared God of War 2005 and God of War 2018 now. TLDR: Older games don´t think you are an idiot and you are allowed to fail. In modern games they always want you to succeed. Modern games are a task list you have to get done (crafting, collecting, listening to stupid dialogue, walking 5 minutes without anything to do), older games just wanted you to have fun. I am talking strictly about Triple A Games. The worst offenders are Ubisoft games and Sony Movie games. There are many more like Square Enix, Activision, Blizzard, Xbox Game Studios etc etc
@Samymaniac another one for me is when a game will try twenty different things, but do them all badly. Just pick a genre or a style and stick with it. I can play countless other games for this two minute experience you just did poorly there. You just know that the reason why games throw every mechanic under the sun into a game even when it's not welcome is because a board of suits said, "These games are all popular. Include these mechanics in your next game somehow!"
It's HILARIOUS that you're calling Max Payne either a classic, retro, OR a vintage game. Doesn't fall under any of those categories for me. Like someone saying "Oh I don't care to check out all these silly new soda flavors, I only love classics like Strawberries & Cream Zero Sugar Dr. Pepper."
Pre ordering is something that used to matter back when every game was a physical copy, at the game store to ensure you got the game on the day of release you needed to pre-order or they might not have enough to sell you the game.
It also being done to games that aren't necessarily poor, but just average or modestly okay, and they also become the targets of undue criticism. I've recently been playing the Avatar game, which is surprisingly decent. But because it's a Ubisoft game, it's an easy target because of their track record. The tendency among content creators to hastily criticize it and focusing only on the negative aspects, often for the sake of views totally skews public perception and overlooks the potential enjoyment some players might find in an Avatar game. It's hard to detect where the line between genuine criticism and sensationalism becomes blurred. Also, Chicken and Happy New Year.
For me it's also just an inherent trait of the internet where nuance is swept under the rug and only the extremes get any sort of engagement. You either love or hate, having the audacity to enjoy something yet point out faults will draw out some zealous followers whereas vice versa will have a similar effect. Ubisoft titles aren't anything special since they recycle formulas from other titles, but they are usually pretty enjoyable to sink time into and have a decent amount of content (minus the checklist activities). They're perfectly serviceable titles and for the most part don't suffer extreme bugs or glitches apart from the now infamous launches of some previous titles. Not everything is GOTY material, and that's ok, so long as the game works and you enjoy you're time with it, then go crazy, just don't support the crappy practices that have been normalised during the past few years.
Honestly most Ubisoft games are not terrible or hot garbage as the Internet likes to treat them as. Most of them are what I would consider good, but not amazing. But because they're not amazing or outstanding, they become an easy target for lambasting. Honestly, not every game needs to be a GOTY contender though like you said. There can be a room for good but not amazing games in the industry. But when you point, this out ppl on the Internet will attack you for "shilling for mediocrity" or some shit.
Spot on if you look at many gaming subreddit i see some many post about a popular game with some calling it overated and acting like their opinion is the right one. If you do like a game fine but find one you like and talk about that. Ubisoft gets to much crap some of their games have more potential. I really enjoyed playing farcry primal recently really unique setting that has alot more potential.
Horizon forbidden west complete edition " Reprint disc. All patches, updates, Exstra content and DLC included on the disc's without having to connect online. Playstation 5 offline plug and play " This is the way too do it. Patiance always reward at the end of the day. I would do the same if I ever would bay Ubisoft AVATAR GAME.
It's a lot easier to throw vitriol at games that are already bad, than to expend energy actually doing research and critically reviewing a decent game. I guess it's the path of least resistance. I had wanted to try Talos Principle for a while and forgot about it --- but this review got me interested in this title again, ty!
Appreciate the recommendations Allanah! All these games you listed look amazing. With such a wide range of great games that came out just this year alone it is honestly baffling how anyone can claim “all” games suck now smh… oh and chicken.
I personally think that part of the reason "bad games" get so much attention is due to the developers/publishers hyping their games up with fantastical looking trailers that hook the "player" into jumping on their bandwagon and continuing the hype and spreading it to their respective communities. But I do think you are right there are so many good games out there and they just don't get the recognition and praise they deserve. Happy New Year CHICKEN.
It's crazy how people now watch a trailer that's nothing more than an advertisement and proclaim it's going to be the best game ever without playing it first.
Thing is, if said person is even mildly into video games, they'd know that cinematic trailers and such are just that, cinematic trailers to show lore or something in the best light possible and is absolutely NOT what you'd get to play. There's also people with wildly unrealistic expectation whenever the developers say anything and is somehow mad and surprised when it's nowhere near their expectation. I think these people think they look smart when they get mad at stuff like this even when it makes no sense when you think about it.
@@playtester6635if it doesn’t meet the hype, then it deserves the negative press. Consider that deception. That’s why games like No Man Sky got all that heat back in the day.
You're missing the point of the criticism. If it were not for people speaking up about these glaring issues it would be exponentially worse. We need to educate the younger generation that is the target audience of new shit live-service games (that you do not even own and can be taken away from you at any time). For over a decade now they have been prioritizing half-assed incomplete games with a shop attached. The problem is mainstream and "AAA". The games with the biggest budget and most potential end up being the biggest disappointments. Furthermore, even in the few good games there are, there is the massive cheating issue that gets swept under the rug because companies are also profiting from that. In closing, you go on to showcase a bunch of what look to be indie games... Stop making excuses for an industry with "a lot of problems" as you yourself admit. *Support the right to own and repair*
I’m really liking your chicken channel. I’m a very noob gamer and you really open my eyes to a lot of things. And I really appreciate your recommendations. And I think it’s amazing how you always speak for the actual hard working people and never forget to include them in your thought processes. You’re genuine and awesome! ❤
Yeah! I'm prefer searching these counter-trend "gaming isn't dead" that deals with "gaming is dead" trend because I was like "hey, they didn't play good games across all times (1985's to present) but they played Candy Crush, bootleg mobile Hypercasuals, and those bad games?" everytime I encounter these "bad" gamers for not playing good games nor both get good and enjoy at playing these. Even most good games (specially those good old mobile games I still playing 'til this day) didn't get attention and love it deserves, and I'm so sad at it Its final nail in the coffin is the NON-GAMER people (like a news host who literally said to the "boy who set World Record to beat Tetris" to go touch grass, I mean what's wrong with this person) who gets in our way
I think one of the things you're discounting is how licensing agreements work. Oftentimes agreements will have a clause that will revert the IP back to the original owner if the publisher sits on it for too long and does nothing with it. Oftentimes studios will realize this at the last minute and instead of allowing the IP to revert back to the original owner, they'll crap out something that's terrible simply so they can hold on to the IP longer. This has happened with the Wheel of Time on more than one occasion (although the most recent iteration just seems like a steaming pile of crap, not a last minute attempt to keep the IP). So it may not be "RUclipsrs talk about bad games, so studios make bad games because it's free marketing." In fact, if you look at their sales (which is the only thing they really care about in the end) for Kong and Gollum, there's no way this is a viable tactic. People aren't buying games on the anti-recommendation of their favorite RUclipsrs. They're passing them by, which means that there's no money being made by these studios.
FAKE GAMERS?????????? SO LIKE....... YOU MEAN TO SAY........ THAT ALL............ TWITCH THOTS ARE NOT REAL GAMERS????????????????? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D
DUDE!!!!!!! ARE YOU STUPID????????? THAT IS NOT AN IP!!!!!!!!!!! THAT IS A TRADEMARK!!!!!!! THEY ARE LITERALLY DIFFERENT THINGS FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!! :D :D
IP rights are a cancer. but so are creatives who are so insecure about making their own IP that they would rather slave away on a doomed game just to help some corpos hold onto IP rights. specifically, the creatives with executive control, like directors and stuff. it's saddest for the lower rung programmers and animators, who might get a permanent stink on their resume from then on, and they usually don't really have a choice if their employer picks up one of these turds. then there are the freelancers who get sucked in, altho i think they at least have the freedom to choose which projects to contribute to and can ignore turds if they do their research? but sometimes work is work and u gotta just kill your passion a little in exchange for food on the table. which brings me to the real point: dying passion. if art loses its soul, then all that's left is crap, intentional or potentional or chicken. we can't expect gamers/consumers to behave rationally without real motivation. i enjoy some of these f2p time wasters but i personally NEVER spend a cent on microtransactions. once an f2p game hits some sorta paywall, i usually quit. if i'm in some sorta guild, i would even encourage people to move on and find a less soul-sucking game to enjoy. but my personal advocacy is simply insufficient. we need a coordinated movement, a consumer's guild of sorts. something like a best practices bureau for gamers, who can police the industry with the power of full transparency and genuine testimonials. steam has done quite a bit; but they are corporate after all and their values do not 100% align with the interests of gamers. we need ORGANISEd REPRESENTATION. a gamers' union.
@@alveolate You're idea of a bureau seems good. Until the game industry captures your bureau, or by any group of political activists that does not align with the gamers. And we're paying customers, I don't know how an union would work.
(vegan) chicken "Predatory practices in the games industry"? Oh geeze, that can of worms goes back decades, easily. "Space War"? Ties to the mercenary industrial complex? smdh, it's grim. Albeit, I am beyond burnt out. Even after I gave away my video game collection in 2009, I still ended up working for The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment (a 503c1 nonprofit playable video game museum with a Library of Congress DMCA exemption for software preservation) and was surrounded by *even more* video games. It's as if I cannot escape it.
As a 80s gamer starting on Commodore 64 that watches very little TV as games are my down time filler. I side eye a lot of content creators, and this really kind of hit home for me. Having to filter the good from the garbage is like a full time job. Turbo Overkill was already on my watch list but thanks for putting me on Pizza Tower and Dead cells: Castlevania. Never heard of Pizza Tower and played Dead cells but missed the dlc. Symphony of the night is still one of the greatest. I played the original. This is the kind of video that shows me you pay attention and actually care. Thank you.
Chicken! Lots of great recommendations. Unfortuantely it seems like good games are starting to become a niche in the overall gaming community. I have friends and coworkers who haven't even heard of Alan Wake or Baldur's Gate (not to mention all the other great indies) until they "robbed" Spider-Man 2 at the Game Awards. It definitely made me wish that they would broaden their horizons a bit.
I think part of it really is about how negative stuff sticks in our minds more than positive stuff. Also while overall the year has been great, at the same time the bad games this year have been quite a lot worse than bad games in previous years so that might also be part of the sentiment
Thanks Alanah, some people really do need to broaden their horizons in terms of games, there were so many good ones this year, made by smaller studios, with ton of love and creativity. Also, chicken.
Chicken. Also this is a great way to call out these trends while turning some attention to some of the awesome games that have been coming out. I'm glad you put this out there!
I'm glad that I now have a list of interesting games to Chicken out! As a "Dad Gamer" who has to pick and choose what I play, it's good to see some unique and great things to play!
I think the problem starts when people fail to recognize that "liking" and "finding it good" are subjective concepts. People are used to communicating these concepts as if they were absolute, and due to the lack of analysis of their own speech, they begin to believe it. There are no "Bad Games". There are games that became popular because several individuals generated their individual negative opinions about games. This also happens the other way around, when games are widely known for being good, or when developers are worshipped. (Rockstar, Team Silent, Shinji Mikami, Hideo Kojima...) This non-individual view on how interesting a game is, how good it is and how much you like it is what generates this shitty content about "THE WORST GAME OF 2023" "MOST DISAPPOINTING GAME OF 2023". If each individual constructed their individual opinions with an open mind, without creating expectations, without creating the prophecy of self-fulfillment, there would be a better video game community. one more thing: Spoiler-free analysis videos are cancer. See: If you watch the video before playing the game (that's why you value spoiler-free content) you are creating expectations and precepts of the game before playing it. And if you've already played the game and are watching the review, you don't need it to be spoiler-free. Metacritic is cancer. Rotten Tomatoes is cancer. The only valid rating is your own. The only valid source of game suggestions is the interest your brain generates when exposed to these games. Or of course, the suggestion of close friends who you trust the good taste. Reviews have created a false impression that it is possible to know what you are going to play before you play. This is not true. You will buy expensive games that you won't like. This is natural. That's how things work.
I love chicken! Great recommendations. Thanks! And yeah... in a time where bad publicity is good and everyone's a game critic with an audience, the publisher still wins from all the attention it's getting, good or bad.
Chicken. This year has been the best year for gaming in a very long time imo. I haven't even had time to get through everything. Cookie cutter (Metroidvania style game) is another amazing game released recently this year that deserves more attention.
Chicken, this is a great look at how people bubble themselves up regarding the entertainment they enjoy! I've noticed something similar happening with rap. Many people like to say it's dead but never bother to go looking for the artists that aren't on top of the popy types of the genre. There's TONS of great art out there that people don't know about and don't take the time to try and know about. It's honestly fairly sad.
Really loved the shout out for Future Redeemed. Not only was the gameplay good, but that "oh snap" moment towards the end for people who've played the previous games was amazing. Chicken.
I feel like people also do this for shows and movies too. Easier to talk about universally bad stuff then to actually explain why something is good. Also have a very chicken new year!🎉
Happy New Chicken Year! Thank you for a great year of sharing your passion with all of us. I am looking forward to see what 2024 will bring for games industry.
Chicken! I've had "Against the Storm" sitting in my wishlist for a while now and you convinced me to buy it. It's currently on sale on Steam though I think the winter sale is about to end.
It's an excellent game. I've played it on my Steam Deck these past few days. You're basically playing the first few years of a settlement which is arguably the hardest and most enjoyable part of colony sims and they built a game around it. Good fun!
Chicken. Great video, and a lot of good points. There's just too much quality and variety in video games to complain about "all games sucking". If you limit yourself to just one or two types of games, then yeah you're more likely to come across games you don't like. And I'm currently playing the first Talos Principle game, really liking it so far. I'm definitely gonna play 2 after I'm done with the first one.
chicken. My taste in games is very limited but I decided recently to buy a GPU to not focus on watching news about bad games and instead can play great games of the past that my current PC can't run 😅. I do agree that rage-bait content is rampant in video-related stuff. Like YongYea covering negative news in the industry or Angry Joe covering mainly bad games to create his successful worst game of the year series. But the channels are not the main problem as they're just chasing the views; views that only the audience can give. Just like how the industry just chasing their money more aggressively through loot boxes and microtransactions because it's proven to work. The people really do have the power but it won't do anything if we complain online about such greedy practices but buy such offers in private.
Fake gamers like Anita Sarkeesian. Who have had more detrimental effects on everyone’s favorite hobby then anything any of the people your talking about. Most games that have been released are shit compared the 360 era.
I agree so hard with this take. It feels like somehow we fell in this vitriol loop of consuming and talking about what we hate instead of talking about what we like and what's good. It feels that we only talk about good games to prove a point about bad games instead of talking of just the good games themselves. What a chicken.
I think there's more good games coming out per year than in the past, but there's also so many games, period, coming out than before. And therefore, there's many more bad games too.
Chicken. Great video, glad you gave a nod to all the variety of great games that came out this year. There really are games for people to play that hate battlepasses.
Great Video, you and all the other diverse gamers out there who actually try or play a lot of different types of games and enjoy them, y'all deserve a WINNER WINNER chicken DINNER
I get tired of gamers being always trendy and only playing popular current games instead of appreciating and acknowledging when we all have backlogs we want to progress.
Chicken in! Fully agree with Cocoon being on your list (which is the only one from your list that I've actually played). My personal favorite is Stray Gods. This one has left a lasting and ever growing impression. I hope people get better at choosing which games are actually "for them" and which are not. Playing games you like brings so much joy!
Tbh I felt I couldn’t include Stray Gods because it has gotten A LOT of attention on this channel :P. Tried to mention things I hadn’t already spoken about.
big skill up fan but to be honest, he kinda contributes to this overall. Biggest example being his day before video, probably one of the biggest and most in depth videos on his channel, not a huge thing but def something worth pointing out @@isaac1403
There were so many great games this year. So many that it's a struggle to try to get to them all! I feel like I'm running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to play as many as I can.
First of all Chicken 🐔, secondly, every year I am reminded why I follow this channel. Such great insight into the gaming world that I would have otherwise not known or cared about. I’d love a series of videos every month where you rattle off maybe 1 or 2 games to check out that aren’t triple A and are worth playing. I found a lot of cool games through you and I’d love to find more.
I only play games after a year of release, when all the bugs are fixed, all the patches, all the skins, etc. Wait for full gameplay review from a trusted RUclipsr, sadly I am stuck with some broken games that I can't even refund now and all you have is "Don't be negative!" I'll be negative when it's my money and you "real gamers" were not even born when we "negative fake gamers" were into this hobby, shill better next time.
@@charalanahzard "narrow taste in games" means buy multiple consoles and a gaming PC so I might have the luck of playing said good games or do as I know is best for my wallet wait it out and not trust gaming companies till everything is fixed and reviewed.
@@charalanahzard the right games as in, what to try something that is not my thing, this sounds like " I know you don't like Fast-food but have you tried McDonald's?" Also these handful of games that you and others claim to be good are functional at launch and you will get a few hours of entertainment, in the 2000's this would be standard, a game below 10 to 12 hours game time and also low replayability would't even make the top 6 by those standards. Not all games were crap in 2023 but the vast majority were.
No, vast majority weren’t. There were too many good games for you to finish. It sounds like you have very narrow taste, which yeah, to me means you’re not much of a gamer/likely very casual. Obviously that’s ok, but if it’s making you unhappy with the medium the solution is to try to get a bit more into it and play more things.
Chicken! Thank you for this video and sharing your thoughts; I always appreciate your candor! Also, thanks for highlighting some of the best games to come out this year (although I wish that section was a bit longer to add more of them in there as some of them I hadn't even heard of before)! Cheers and Happy New Year!
this year is genuinely the best year for games in recent memory for me, with games both indie and AAA that moved me so much that I'm now learning how to create one, maybe I'll do one that has chickens in it or something
IMO, 2010 was better, but I'm also aware ofbthe fact that I had more time and disposable income to dedicate to gaming in those days, I'm sure someone that is 25 in 2023 would think last year is the best year ever (and it might be, like I said, I'm aware of my bias). Point I' trying to make is, I didn't think this year was particularly amazing, we had a lot of good games, but I have seen better years, but I' not going to decry anyone that has found more to love this year than any other year. But for some people, proving others "wrong" is the only thing they enjoy.
Seriously it was a crazy year. Its going to take me years to play the great games from just 2023.. and FF7 rebirth comes out this year so take months out of this year for that (assuming it makes it to PC near the end of the year at least)
@@muddystick Yeah 2010 was far better, I think people have just lowered they're expectations. Cant even think of a game I like that came out this year tbh, but then I'm not into story games or a lot of indie stuff which seems to be 90% of games now.
I've bought so many indie games and a couple of mainstream games this year and they were all fantastic , didn't expect to watch through the entire video and agree with most points . I've never bought a Call of Duty game , never purchased a battle pass and only spent money buying three csgo skins . I own as many indie games as mainstream games , ever since 2020 I've primarily been buying indie games and it's opened my mind to so many genres ( I own a lot of old school style FPS shooters ) . You've earned a sub and my respect .
Chicken. Thank you for sharing this - as ever you’ve done a much better job than me of conveying thoughts that I’ve had. I also think it isn’t a coincidence that this has happened in a year where we had the worst receiving Call of Duty in recent memory. It’s not all that but I don’t think it helps.
call of duty was only received badly due to its campaign, it has nothing to do with the game as whole. The multiplayer is getting praised left and right.
Really really appreciate all of those just chicken tier recommendations, definitely some I’ve never heard of! Seriously thanks for covering this, amazing video!
I don't like horror, shooters, or souls like games and I'm more into JRPGS, RPGS, Platformers, simulations, and some action games. So some games are just not targeted to me and I have to accept that.
I’ve said this for years, we’ve monetized hate. We hate games, we hate gamers in other gaming communities and it makes sense because hate is a strong emotion. I think it’s amazing how much effort goes into to making a video about things we hate rather than moving on to another game. Watch the likes and the fact that people’s vids get ad rev. We love to hate.
It's funny (no), I feel it's the same in music, especially when entering a specific genre (rap, metal, kpop). People love their genre, and they might enjoy a few subgenres, but they'll quickly start hating people liking things enjoying a slightly different things than them. ie somebody enjoying death metal that hates when people say they love numetal or what not. And the worst part is when people do content to say "I love this", they're quickly labeled as being shills. That makes little to no sense. Anyhoo, I think you're right.
My wallet: Only phycical singelplayer games who do not require online connection just to play for 1 simple reason ownership " EA: SINGELPLAYER GAMES ARE DEAD " EA MADE STAR WARS FALLEN ORDER SOLD MILLIONS: EA PROVED EA WRONG "
It's because when gamers start being too positive, the corpos start getting more predatory. If yt and tt have taught us anything in the last 7 years it's that a toxic positivity culture is easy to cultivate.
It's less about "all games are bad" and more about all the games I grew up playing have been murdered by the giant game companies that mismanage them. Now the things I want to play are objectively worse than they used to be. Think Diablo, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Halo etc. A lot of gamers have fond memories of playing these games growing up, and now the games industry treats the very same IPs that made them rich like keys they can jingle in front of players to unlock their wallets. It's sickening to see something you love get worse and worse every year. This isn't anything new, and the same kind of nostalgia bating has been in the film industry for decades. No amount of buying indie games is going to fix it. The sad reality is that until investors learn to be okay with short term losses or just less profit, the patterns will never change. They know exactly how to loosen pockets, and aren't going to change strategies until it stops working.
"you'd be hard pressed to play all the games" is such an understatement: if you spend literally all your time eating, sleeping, biobreaking, and playing video games, you won't be able to finish them all!
Because negativity sells better than positivity.. Just look at this video you made, you're doing it yourself. Instead of praising anything you'll just look at the negatives. My sister in christ, you're doing the same shit you're fighting against.
Gate keeping is good. If you don't play games you're not a gamer. If you don't read comics, you're not a comics fan. If you don't watch a genre of films YOU'RE NOT A FAN of the franchise.
Thank you for making this video and offering counterprograming to outrage culture Alanah! I've only played 8 games for this year. Well 9 if you count the Super Mario RPG remake, which I'm really enjoying so far. Those games are Spider-Man 2, Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Bros. Wonder and RE4 Remake, all of which were incredible and some pretty cool indie games like Lunark, Teslagrad 2, Clive n' Wrench, and Gunbrella. I do want to play Turbo Overkill and Pizza Tower though. Hopefully, they'll get a console release soon. I also want to play stuff like Alan Wake II and Cookie Cutter down the line. Happy New Year and Chicken!
Consistent ridicule of bad practices isn't a problem. Hyper fixation while ignoring everything else could be. When there exist an entire cottage industry of people intentionally infiltrating and hijacking long-standing franchises and purposefully screwing with what made them the powerhouses they were in the first place, shining a spotlight on their consistent patterns of bad behavior while monetizing it, in my opinion, is just good tactics.
I feel like there is a place for award shows but I would love something like this where it is a wrap up of good games. Don't have to be the best just good.
TL.DR. All the players have is their voice, either in the form of words or money. Everyone, I emphasize EVERYONE, has the right to say whatever they want about the product represented by computer games. And criticism is the most powerful driving force in the process of production and improvement. If you are not like the author of the video (you live with normal logic) and want something to change, then criticize if you think it’s fair, but most importantly, don’t turn to hatred. Companies will always try to deceive you, don't live in a pony world. And good games in 90% of cases, even without you, will find their audience and will be licked from head to toe - no doubt.
Chicken. Great to hear this take. I agree. I feel like people aren't curious enough to try new things or go outside the AAA space. They spend more time watching outrage youtubers than playing games.
I'm in my mid-30s and have been playing video games my entire life. It has only been getting better and better. The sheer number of games out there absolutely dwarfs how it was in the past. All of these indie games are so interesting, creative, and diverse. There's something there for everyone.
I'm in my early 30s and I have to agree. I have heard people talk about game droughts here and there and Idk what they're talking about. We are SPOILED for choice in this medium. Now, of course not every game or genre of game will appeal to everyone, but we have come so far in these last 20-odd years.
I grew up in the birth of video games you cant beat what the game industry was and can reapect the inovation and evolution of what gaming is, but it has become a little greedy, especially with talks of not owning games and only subcribing to them sees the industry in the wrong direction.
I think there is a bit of confusion when people say video games are dying. When you talk to them, a lot of complaints are that the developers that they grew up loving, the franchises that they loved, they are all going to shit. They are all getting monetized into the ground. But because, as you get older, you get stuck in your ways and it becomes harder to go outside your bubble, so you're not very keen on trying all these very 'odd' indie games. You're less likely to experiment, or take a risk with your money. So you see the cancer of video games and it's hard to see past it. I mean, I grew up loving the triple Bs as I called it. Bioware, Blizzard, Bethesda. Safe to say, not anymore. :P Then, to add on top of that, our wallets aren't exactly getting fuller, because... well everything related to the computer, or even entertainment is also turning into a subscription. So you have a ton of subscriptions to pick and choose from in order to get your entertainment, and manage those. But don't forget, you might also need to buy new hardware at $500 a pop, because exclusives. Then mandatory bills including food are going up. You also have less time, so your time becomes more valuable and you want to spend it on something of quality. Yada yada. It's not easy for someone in their 30s living on their own to just jump on unknowns. Not like younger folks with less responsibilities. And these are primarily the people I see complaining. Chicken.
People use the strawman argument that it's just "cod bros" complaining who only play one or two genres (or games). When you have someone point out that one series has lost features over time, and mechanically more shallow, people say you're nitpicky so they don't have to argue the topic/position. Then it happens to a bunch of studios/franchises and people say you're overexaggerating. "It's just nostalgia" because somehow it's literally impossible for a bunch of studios, that have gotten more corporate and lost the camaraderie by having 300+ people teams, is somehow unbelievable. They'll concede that battle passes and MTX exist, and yet ignore all the steps that led to games getting worse to get to that point.
I branched out heavily this year and started playing jrpgs. Star Ocean 2nd Story R and Octopath Traveler 2 are probably up there in my top 10 favorite games I’ve played. Also started playing Monster Hunter
The problem with Monster Hunter I keep finding is that reallife detracts me and then when I finally want to get back to it, they're already almost done with a new iteration. I can't keep up with Monster Hunter.
I just came to this realization about preordering games. I think a few generations back it made more sense to do it in order to ensure you got a copy on release if it was something you were excited about. Coming from a small town, I needed to do that because the discs were actually in limited supply in my area so I could be left without a copy because of that. But discs aren't the main method of game delivery anymore, certainly not for me (Steam mostly, but also only have the digital PS5), so there's no need to preorder because you're still going to be able to get a digital copy on release day.
Ethics in game design is something I've been thinking a LOT about. On top of the abuses and shortcuts in the industry, the lack of ethical accountability scares me because there is no entertainment medium that is more tied into how the audience develops habits than game design. Literally, games train behaviors into people - and originally, that's actually what games and sports were for. This is a great video, and I thank you for starting this conversation.
really love this call out - basically bad publicity sells, unfortunately I think that's whatt media is these days... drama and negativity get more eye balls; not to get too deep but I think this is fundementally a wave that transcends video games and bleeds into wordly issues but I digress. Really love your work Alanah! also... Chicken
There was a time where people used "fake gamers" as an insult against folks who played games on a casual basis. I thought the video would be a parody of that attitude. I got a video dispelling some of the negativity and doomsaying around the industry instead. Thanks for shouting out some recommendations too! Happy new year!
Not just casual gamers, but it was used towards almost every woman gamer regardless of their position in the hobby or industry. Woman game devs were called “fake gamer girls” constantly.
I love the braindead argument of "well good stuff still exists, therefore x industry is as good as it always been." Of course no one thinks good games don't get made anymore, no one has ever said that.
They absolutely have. People are saying it in the comments here. I wouldn’t have made this video is people weren’t saying it, you just must not have seen it!
@@mattwho42 Bro, I don't care what you say man. Vas is still the best video game antagonist of the whole series.
I am very tired about these people that only play Call of Duty and Fifa every year, and then complain that all games are bad
💯💯💯
I actually think most people that only play those games don’t even really think about the broader industry since most people that play games in general do so casually and don’t think about it beyond the surface level entertainment (which is perfectly fine). And if they do they generally direct that hatred toward the game that they refuse to just stop playing despite not liking it. You won’t find someone who hates cod more than the person who plays it for 1000 hours.
@@R17759This is exactly right, I play fifa every single year and everyone else who I know who plays it hates fifa and actively looks forwards to other game releases to have a break from the fifa cycle. I think the ‘Fifa and COD’ players actively enjoy games like Elden Ring and other games way more because of their hatred towards the games they play the most
THANK YOU!
@Epelpaj can you tell me who said that?
every form of media industry now runs off anger, people will engage way more when they’re pissed at something instead of having a fine time
Something the food industry has known for decades. Many times i have a noticed a pattern of rude supermarket employees at certain times of the month where people have just gotten paid as if they were trying to get customers angry so they would buy more since it did not make sense they would want to lose their customers.
Gamers are a notoriously toxic crowd.

For a tl;dr, just read the last paragraph lol
"Why signal boost the bad so much..."
Because if we don't make people aware of these issues, then the issues multiply, exactly because people will not vote with their wallet.
Why?
"Gamers are already buying microtransactions and battle passes..."
Maybe that's because we don't signal boost the bad effects of these practices enough? I reckon most people who do buy battle passes and such either
1) don't care about how ethical they are either way,
2) are uninformed of why they're bad, or
3) have more money than sense and don't care how much money they spend.
@@mrshmuga9 True, especially for a journalist, this is a bad take. Good point.
I bought some microtransactions from random games and then uninstalled the games just to increase the algorithm. All for you, buddy. You're welcome.
There are many reasons, the main being; the algorithm, growing monopolization of the games industry and culture wars.

These people never play Japanese or indie games but say games are all terrible nowadays.
A lot of us are struggling with the idea that we once loved something and now we don't. Music, films, games, books - it doesn't really matter. Some of us learn to love these things when we are very young, and as we grow we move beyond them. But it's hard to accept that you might simply have more demands than the medium can possibly meet.
I’ve come to accept that and I think I’m actually starting to enjoy movies and games more because of that
Years ago I used to have a very critical mindset about what movies or games I enjoy which meant I spent far too much time discussing and arguing about them rather than actually enjoying them, but now I’m a working man and it’s made me come out of that phase of life and realise that now I’m less critical about things than I used to be and now I play games or watch shit for my personal enjoyment rather than trying to give it a rating or brag to people online about my knowledge of media
@@RaymondStormbl3ssed Make the most of this phase of your life. There may come a time when some games are just beyond you, and complex movie plotlines are impenetrable! Maybe you'll be lucky and have all your faculties well into your dotage. For me, the war is nearly over! lol
I'm tending towards games that I have loved for a long time, and finding new games (especially the big AAA titles) increasingly annoying. I just wanna have fun, and maybe a few good laughs!
Is that too much to ask for?
Meanwhile I am still obsessed with Club Penguin
it seems we have an obsession with bad games. neverknowsbest's take on it is very enlightening - never would have known the gollum game actually had potential, as bad the end product turned out. the video made me realize just how much influence we get from reviewers/youtubers and how much of the content gravitates towards the bad parts
Pepper."
@@YodatheHobbit it's true though; they're both over twenty years old now - they could legally drink 😅
Pre ordering is something that used to matter back when every game was a physical copy, at the game store to ensure you got the game on the day of release you needed to pre-order or they might not have enough to sell you the game.
I'M NOT A FAKE GAMER!!! I just don't have the time anymore....sniff
One creator said that avatar game was the worse game of 2023
Honestly most Ubisoft games are not terrible or hot garbage as the Internet likes to treat them as.

It's a lot easier to throw vitriol at games that are already bad, than to expend energy actually doing research and critically reviewing a decent game. I guess it's the path of least resistance. I had wanted to try Talos Principle for a while and forgot about it --- but this review got me interested in this title again, ty!
Love what you do for the gaming community "Chicken". Thanks for promoting all these great games. Happy New Year.
Gaming has a hype problem but it's such an important part of marketing in the space I don't think it is going to change anytime soon.
@@Kaxology No I just have idiot brain and I always get super hype for game trailers lol

Yea Alannah's video are dope!
Even most good games (specially those good old mobile games I still playing 'til this day) didn't get attention and love it deserves, and I'm so sad at it
Its final nail in the coffin is the NON-GAMER people (like a news host who literally said to the "boy who set World Record to beat Tetris" to go touch grass, I mean what's wrong with this person) who gets in our way
I think one of the things you're discounting is how licensing agreements work.
I legit love The Wheel of Time pilot Winter Dragon.
It's so bad, so bad. It's great.
Chicken. Happy New Year and thanks for all the videos you released this year, giving a balanced and sound perspective of a crazy industry.

"Predatory practices in the games industry"?
True chickens will understand how well thought out this video is. You nailed one of the biggest issues with gaming today. Another great video.
I'm really glad she featured Dave the Diver, I also really enjoyed the retro shooter Blood West
(Rockstar, Team Silent, Shinji Mikami, Hideo Kojima...)
This non-individual view on how interesting a game is, how good it is and how much you like it is what generates this shitty content about "THE WORST GAME OF 2023" "MOST DISAPPOINTING GAME OF 2023".
Cookie cutter (Metroidvania style game) is another amazing game released recently this year that deserves more attention.
im sick of fake game devs who also outright steal other people's art
Fake gamers. Mobile players. Yeh I said it. You are not a gamer, you just stuck to your phone..

Good fun!

Not all games were crap in 2023 but the vast majority were.
No, vast majority weren’t. There were too many good games for you to finish. It sounds like you have very narrow taste, which yeah, to me means you’re not much of a gamer/likely very casual. what kind of npc actually writes these comments
this year is genuinely the best year for games in recent memory for me, with games both indie and AAA that moved me so much that I'm now learning how to create one, maybe I'll do one that has chickens in it or something
Was the best year for EA vampire survivor likes too.
Of course people from different generations will pick different years because some kids today weren't even a fetus in 2010.
Chicken. Definitely agree that Against the Storm is up there for great games of the year. Glad it made your list!

@lif6737 oh yeah I bought it day one
You try out Robocop Rogue City yet?
@@ShiggyMiyamo I have upgrade my system before playing that .
Appreciate the perspective Allanah. You're still one of the best in the industry. Made it to the end
Did you though?
The lack of poultry in your comment says otherwise.

Exactly. Didn't see him say the magic word 😂@@gargamellenoir8460

I think everyone knows indie games are good... People complain about "bigger" games, because they used to be good.
@@diegosotomiranda4107dumb take, if games are regularly fairly cheap why would you ever pay full price for it? That’s stupid
They know exactly how to loosen pockets, and aren't going to change strategies until it stops working.
such a whirlwind of gaming news this year. i wonder what the new year would bring. also, i like the "chicken out" part of the vid, nailed it. 😄
When there exist an entire cottage industry of people intentionally infiltrating and hijacking long-standing franchises and purposefully screwing with what made them the powerhouses they were in the first place, shining a spotlight on their consistent patterns of bad behavior while monetizing it, in my opinion, is just good tactics.
this girl is in an echo chamber complaining about the echo chamber next to her
I feel like there is a place for award shows but I would love something like this where it is a wrap up of good games. Don't have to be the best just good.
Happy holidays and happy new year to all the chickens out there. Thanks for the all the great videos this year.
I am sick of normies pretending to be gamers.
And good games in 90% of cases, even without you, will find their audience and will be licked from head to toe - no doubt.
yup
Chicken. Great to hear this take. I agree. I feel like people aren't curious enough to try new things or go outside the AAA space. They spend more time watching outrage youtubers than playing games.
sounds like something a faker gamer would say 🙊
Then, to add on top of that, our wallets aren't exactly getting fuller, because... well everything related to the computer, or even entertainment is also turning into a subscription.
Check out Sea of Stars.
which monster hunter?

Hello Internet Explorer, how have you been?
Really love your work Alanah! also... Chicken
nah. If people don't see how bad a product is, then they will by bad products.
recent and growing culture? ya, i believe GamerGate called this out literally a decade ago. gooble gobble one of us... i mean, chicken.

I love how you used braindead, then at the end said something people literally make dozens of videos a day about don't exist.
