FYI there's now a bit of a weird cut at 8:55 because the video got copyright claimed, so I had to trim out a small chunk (and there was no way to do it well). The trimmed segment is basically me talking about how it was very successful and the movie has made loads of money.
Agree with you 100% on this! Including not being a fan of musicals. The only musical I enjoy is “Tik Tik Boom!” On Netflix starring Andrew Garfield, and inspired by a true story. The main character writes musicals (RENT) so the singing sequences make sense. Have you seen that? I’ve also been a longtime admirer of you since your IGN days. Love your candor because I agree with your POVs on just about everything! Can’t wait to see what you do, and where you go since Santa Monica Studios. Wishing you and your family the very best, and thank you for inspiring me in little ways throughout the years.
I'm definitely not the target audience. In your video, I learned this was a musical. Also, I asked a girl about her hobby, and she went on for a half hour or so about Hello Kitty. I have zero interest in Hello Kitty, but it was enjoyable listening her go on about it. She was enjoying it a lot. As a fan of things, I have very few people who would listen to me. I just wish people would listen to me and my favorite hobby, LEGO.
Love this take. I don’t really care much about D&D, but I love hearing my friends go on and on about it. They love it and the storytelling they go through together. I’ve played a few times but it’s not for me. Also hello fellow LEGO fan!
"person who hates heights still hates heights after bungee jumping". Honestly glad you gave the movie a shot and gave it a honest review. Movies are for everyone, but everyone doesn't have to love all the movies.
People have just become extremists about everything. Something is either the BEST THING EVER or THE WORST THING EVER. And people will defend their viewpoint with vile behavior. We need to bring back nuance. We also need to have open minds to allow people to have their opinions (as long as it isn't openly hurting others). Different opinions are important. But instead we have "You better feel the exact same way about this topic/issue or else."
This. Nuanced takes are treated as having a lack of conviction, when in actuality, they're usually more so as they're well thought out. Extreme positions take no mental effort whatsoever. Unfortunately, like you said, most people these days feel that if they don't hold an extreme position on something, then their position isn't valid.
It's more like the internet has been taken over by extremist opinions because they are so loud and annoyign that most the resonable people have just given up engaging with it.
@@FeaturelessBlackLoam that depends on how close you are and how many times you have to pick them up from a f****** meltdown from losing it over another lost love lol
Black guy here. On a date, some girl forced me to watch Hamilton. I hated every second of it. I'm still black, it's OK. It's fine to cringe at musicals. It doesn't make you racist.
I am so with you. Too many people have main character syndrome. If you don't like anything, fine. If you like something, fine. If you're indifferent about something, also fine
I agree! I have a colleague who, when he shows me something and I say, 'it's good but not my cup of tea', all I get back is 'so you hate it?' This is the same person though who doesn't accept anything outside of their world as fact though... so.. I remember when he spent an entire month trying to convince me I need to subscribe to all the streaming services, even though outside of Star Trek and a handful of other shows on repeat, I don't watch anything. I read and play games. 'It will change your life,' is something I heard over and over again. At last years Christmas event, my husband asked him if he had stock in Netflix. :D He didn't get the joke...
@@CaptainNamikaze I have one of those as well. Everything has to be binary. He constantly shows us photos of car shows he goes to and I’m just so not into cars. I have mine to get around and that’s basically it. Once he showed me a Mustang or some American muscle car. Like I said, no clue about that stuff. I made the mistake and went “looks great but can you imagine finding a parking spot for that thing? Haha”. Ooooh he went off as if I had just killed his mother

100% look what's happening to the table top community, specifically Dungeon and Dragons. its fuckin wack, I'm not saying we should be hateful, but a lil gatekeeping is healthy for any community imo.
there might be some overlap there, not entirely coincidental. I've only ever met a small handful of theatre kids that matured past their Grade 10 state.
The media literacy (or lack thereof) is such a massive issue. There are at the minimum weekly online meltdowns on mass that are entirely spawned from people only reading misleading headlines.
People know whether they like something or not though. Not everyone has a pitchfork and is standing at roadside waiting for a convenient bandwagon to jump on. The problem being that people who just sincerely don't like, or like, the 'thing' get lumped in with the toxics. It's ridiculous. 'The Acolyte' (Star Wars) was a classic example. One side of the fence were shrieking at the 'toxic chuds' for getting their show cancelled when the viewership numbers showed the production was just not popular. Despite this, everyone who expressed a negative opinion about the show got lumped in with the 'toxic chuds' and the shrieking continued.
Not only is it stupid, it's entirely counterproductive. Like the whole nonsense with Concord. It didn't fail because the characters were "woke" it failed because they were ugly to look at. Not just because their design was intentionally supposed to be "ugly people" but because the artists fundamentally misunderstand what makes good character designs. But no, I can't talk about that because to the "anti-woke" idiots, I'm defending "wokeness" and then to the overly pushy PC crowd, I'm justifying LGBTQ+ hate somehow. Neither stance addresses the underlying issue that the character designers weren't good at their jobs.
Toxic positivity is when you are expected to show positive emotions in situations where it isn’t appropriate. People enjoying a film, a game, or any piece of art is an appropriate situation to be positive. Attacking others for not feeling the same way you do is just “toxicity”. Real toxic positivity can cause real psychological harm; fake and redefined “toxic positivity” is just something people think wins them Internet arguments but instead just shows that they are incapable of Googling.
@@Nick-cs4oc The difference is classically toxic people know they're being toxic. Toxic positivity people actually think they're being morally righteous.
Alanah, a very Progressive, incredibly charitable person, that literally dedicates her life to helping others of all types of disadvantages (to an extreme some might say) is being attacked by other Progressives viscerally, having her character questioned, just because she had "the wrong opinion" on a fictional movie. DO YOU NOT SEE A PROBLEM HERE!? I really hope 2024 is wake-up call to some toxic people that would never fathom to call themselves that. Sadly, I continue to lose hope by the day that it is.
It's almost like people are individuals, and political groups aren't hive minds. It's not just progressives, it's the right wing as well, and a story going in history for as long as there is history. The more extreme a group gets, it eventually turns on itself for one reason or another. It's not that progressives are any different for doing it, it's just more ironic due to how much they talk about love and understanding.
Dude, I was watching some of the comments you were getting on Threads and it was insane. There's being passionate about something and being borderline insane and some people struggle toeing that line.
that's just the internet in general everywhere. if there are fans of something, there will be bad fans. just like literally any group of people. what are the good/ normal fans supposed to do? we can't stop people from being weirdos. we tell them off too but does it ever stop? no. look at any "stans" which is also toxic. the beehive, Nikki fans, certain swifties, it just depends on the person cuz there are always good and normal fans too. it's like that TV show Swarm😅 ppl even make art about those types of fans. some people take things too far online in any direction about any topic. that's part of why it's so toxic and dangerous and caustic. at this point it just feels like it's making everything worse and not much better, like the cons maybe actually outweigh the pros.
It's interesting how much of the online discourse in English is shaped and framed by American life experiences (and to a lesser degree British and even lesser Australian). Nobody in my country would call someone who loves musicals a theater kid. We have no theater clubs or glee clubs in our school. The stereotype of a theater kid doesn't exist here. If you love musicals you just love musicals.
Thank you!!! Unfortunately in America, we have this thing called Jocks. If you watch 80s and 90s movies, it's really well documented. And people can't get over this thing where people have different opinions. God forbid they be passionate about it
You ever think you're hanging around "children"? American children for one? Adults don't call people who love musicals "theater kids", In fact as an adult American THIS video is the 1st time I've heard this phrase. In the south where I grew up we out outdoor theaters with plays of all varieties and they were pretty awesome.
@@TheAgentAssassin If you've never heard of the term theater kids, then just sit this one out. You have nothing of substance to input. That's like not knowing who Lamar Jackson is and having an opinion on the Ravens game smh
“I don’t like musicals, I know I don’t musicals.” Then don’t go watch it. Don’t waste your time on trying to watch something you don’t like by default. If a whole bunch of people are having their time in the sun because a musical is out, good for them. Staying in the shadows is cool too. PS: I love musicals, I know I love musicals. But I ain’t gonna judge you for it, you do you. Just watch, play, and do what you love. You’ll be happier that way. ❤️
@ I was trying to say you do you and there’s nothing wrong with being who you are and to just do the things you like to do. Clearly my messaging failed so I’ll take the L here. Have a good rest of your day 😑
Musical theater and movies aren't everyone's cup of tea. Thank you for stepping outside your comfort zone to see it and share your experience with us. I have not seen it yet. I want to see it soon! ❤
I love a film where you can tell in the first 5 minutes that it’s not for you. I understand it’s a lot less likeable when you’ve paid for a cinema ticket and you’re locked in. This film starts with the most musical of musical songs. I imagine a lot of people as soon as that first song started were internalising a big "uh oh".
I activated my one get out of jail card for this movie and my wife went alone. She was slightly disappointed. When she got back she said it was the right choice, it would've been borderline spousal abuse to make me sit through that.
Dude, I LOVE your videos - I just think you have such a great level of emotional maturity that enables you to view topics and discussions in such an earnest and fair way. It's so refreshing to hear someone say 'I don't love this but I love that YOU love this'. I often feel that I can't share excitement about topics for fear of being teased (heavily bullied as a kid) so being reminded that it's okay to be passionate is super important. I LOVE when people passionately explain things - I feel the way that you do; it's the most interesting aspects of a person. Such a fan of what you do, thanks for sharing your views
God forbid anyone have a different opinion on anything, I will never understand how much people are willing to go out of their way just to let people know their opinion is better than anyone else's.
@@drudle Yeah I guess so, like I could have said I've sort of heard the name, but still didn't know what it was. I'm not really drawn to musicals though, but culturally it was something of a blind spot.
I know you said you don’t believe us, but I legitimately have not been seeing any promotions for wicked to the point that I didn’t realize it was in theaters now.
the tunic issue is one of the things i hate about the gaming industry right now. since dark souls took off everyone wants gaming to be challenging experience. thats fine for those who want that, but there are loads of gamers who just dont have the time or patience to get through difficult games these days. the answer is always just "get good", or "its not the game for you". the former just isnt helpful to anyone so i wont even bother discussing that, but the latter literally means the vast majority of people shouldnt be buying good games because they wont be able to get through it. once that advice starts truly sinking in, we wont get those games anymore period, because they arent making money on them. people need to understand why some compromise is necessary, particularly in gaming.
Tbh, I think a lot of articles that state something is "rumored", "alleged", "reportedly", or "from an anonymous source" are just flat out lies and fabrications made up by the writer of the article to create links and views.
Of course they are....and the person writing it knows most people who read said fabrication will immediately disregard the "rumored/alleged/reportedly" part and treat it as irrefutable fact. It's why they do it that way. Hell, prop 47 in California that legalized retail theft under $950 and legalized wide open drug use, drug selling, and being indecent in front of schools was titled "The Safe Neighborhood and Schools Act", so people voted for it. Sure, 10 years later it just got repealed by a whopping 71% vote, but it took crime increasing by orders of magnitude in order for people to realize the prop wasn't what it was labeled to be.
15:55 i remember you once talking about how you used to get teased at school for how excited you'd get when talking about video games. Which is sad, it's sweet when people get happy about stuff they love.
Hard disagree. The interviews are cringe not because of an excess of passion, it feels very performative, very current Disney. Watching actresses 'cry' over how important their movie is and how happy they are about 'inspiring the youths' feels so calculated and manipulative it makes me want to hurl. I'd take boring interviews about how nice it was to work with the director over this every day
This aspect I agree with. It feels so fake, performative as you said. Pandering in the extreme. Yes, some people have "life changing" experiences from pieces of art, but saying that your project is going to do that for people is just… wow, that's ego or hubris if I've even seen it. These interviews should be about the making of experience for the actors. You referenced Disney and it's spot on. The "interviews" for (just picking a random recent D+ show 😉) The Acolyte… all about how "groundbreaking" and "inclusive" and "pushing boundaries" blah blah blah. Please… I won't get into how/why we pay actors (and producers, directors, etc.) so much, but just talk about your experiences working on it, the passion you had in the project, why you wrote/directed/acted in this production, NOT about how your thing will "change people's lives" or other lofty nonsense. That's not for you to decide! That's what you might hope will happen, but really you're telling me it's "gonna change me" for realz?!? I'm a teacher; I don't do this because I know it will change students lives. I hope it does, but that is *up to my students!* Wow, sorry, bit of a rant I guess! Just wanted to agree with your excellent point and throw a little algo magic at Alannah too. Cheers.
Also, keep in mind the marketing campaign for a movie is probably exhausting work. Sure we can say "oh they get flown to different countries and sit on a chair and get catered too"... but in that seat you see how jaded they get, having the same questions, the same contracted constant travel where they show and and might not even know what show they are on next. All that is my long rant to say, when you are tired and bonding, you can be overly emotional (see any reality tv show as an example)
Whenever any developer/producer/actor/etc. claims their movie/game/so forth is "genre defining", "the best of all time", etc., I can't help but roll my eyes back into my head so far I can see my optic nerves. Take a chill pill, it's just a movie/game/etc. It might be a good one, or a poor one, but regardless, it's all very preformative. I'm sorry, but putting half a trillion dollars into marketing doesn't automatically make it the ("objectively") "best of its kind in history". No, it's just another symptom of the modern world where engagement means everything.
@@Slantwalker i'd be more sympathetic to how hard this is if they weren't literally paid millions of dollars for it. If you get paid 15 mill to be in a movie, and youre too emotional to promote it properly and turn off potential viewers with your media appearances, you probably shouldn't be paid that money again. Media training and resilience is a thing you can practice and improve in
Why would those theatre kids even think that people who aren't into musicals might just have a revelatory experience just specifically with this one? I like musicals myself and haven't had time to watch Wicked just yet, but I can just tell this movie is like the very type of musical show that people who aren't into it wouldn't like it. Like I would never expect my friends who don't like musicals to tolerate 3 hours of their time to watch this movie and not complain a thing, that's ridiculous.
As a die-hard Wicked Fan and an even bigger Ariana Grande fan. (Seen three times and cried more each time I saw it) It upsets me that they are attacking you like that. It’s stupid. You’re not a musical fan. And that’s okay🙄 geez… And when it comes to their press tour- I think they created this deep relationship while in a massive and intense point in both of their lives and they found something they needed in each other and it had a profound effect on them that being around each other for such a long time again for the press tour -brought that all back up again. (But that’s just super fan speculation on my part.. lol) Also anyone who sings in the theatre is a monster.
As someone who also doesn't like musical, this was a welcome take on this movie and all the shit surrounding it. and i have to say this all reminded me of all the marketing for the Cats movie, which again was theatre kids being fuckin obnoxious. but yeah, be passionate, but don't be a dick and obnoxious about it. great vid
@2:30 I almost missed the entire marketing campaign by buying YT premium several years back and never watching cable TV...until Jarvis and Phil DeFranco started talking about the pr0n site thing on the doll boxes. I sincerely didn't even realize they were making a movie cause I've been spending so much time getting crushed by capitalism. Still, yay Alanah vid!
I only watched Wicked due to my cousin coming over for Thanksgiving. While I did not intend to watch it if not for that, I am glad I did because I actually enjoyed it and didn't feel the two hours and 40 minutes.
These people need to grow up and realize that it's ok if someone doesn't like the thing you like. You can still like that thing. No one's stopping you.
Way back in caveman days, there used to be this thing called a "guilty pleasure". It's when someone admits they like something that they recognize isn't very good or even bad. Crazy, I know! I almost didn't believe such a thing existed. Unfortunately, it went extinct about 525,000 years ago, so I wouldn't be surprised if you've never heard of such a wild thing.
Should be in the dictionary as examples of “terminally online” That said, it’s funny how people who don’t like musicals always think “maybe this one” and then remember they hate the base concept of a musical while they’re seated. There’s no shame in staying home!
The whole "you're just a white person, you wouldn't understand" is so early 2010s on Tumblr, and is tired, performative, and lame at this point. But also, I literally missed the Wicked hype train and press. I didn't know it was in theaters until a few days ago. Somehow it managed to pass me by entirely until this weekend.
The stupidity cycle of the woke culture war is starting to come full circle. As you said, back in the tumblr days you had a loud group of weirdos complaining about everything and everyone being racist. Then for the past several years there’s been this big wave of “anti-woke” goons complaining that everything and everyone is woke. Now as a response to that, there’s a resurgence of the cartoonishly silly people who will attempt to invalidate any criticism/opinion you might have of something by just lumping you in with the anti-woke brigade and saying that you're racist.
I genuinely didn't know this movie was coming out until like 3 days ago. I haven't seen any marketing for it in my small town in Norway and I barely use any social media outside of RUclips and I none of the people I'm subscribed were talking about it. Also, I completely agree that we should let people be passionate about things. I spent a large part of my life, from childhood into my young adult years basically being afraid to show emotion or passion just because of how I was raised. It wasn't until the last few years that I started opening up about how I feel and actually expressing myself and showing that I care about things. If you're the kind of person that mocks and belittles someone for the things they like and for expressing themselves, you're the worst kind of person.
It’s really funny to me how people on the internet are upholding Wicked and other VILLAIN origin story movies as symbols of female and minority empowerment when the protagonists go on to become some of the most repulsive and evil characters in popular fiction. Kinda sending mixed messages there aren’t ya?
To be fair, Wicked can be considered kind of an alternate-universe take, with more nuanced reasons for Elphaba to become considered the Wicked Witch. Unless the movie changes that.
one of the main reasons i dislike female villains is cause writers will often portray them as being justified because they experienced sexism/racism... like being a victim of bigotry is an excuse to be a horrible person
I've been thinking about this as it's been bothering me. I like some re-imaginings (like Wicked and Once Upon a Time) and really don't like some of the others such as Maleficent and Cruella. The good ones (to me) feel like an alternate history or maybe like you've heard a legend or story you've only heard that's simplified into black and white, good vs evil and how their villainhood/reputation is not necessarily exactly how it turned out. It's the story told afterwards. The ones that don't work for me are the ones that try to retrofit a backstory but end up with exactly the same character at the end and maintain this is exactly the person they end up in the original films. For me, the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a villain, is evil, is not at all sympathetic - because that's the context of the film and story. Wicked doesn't redeem that for me, it's a different story. The Elphaba in Wicked (again to me) is a what if? on you'd just been told that story based on a real historical person and had been told (by those who shaped the narrative after) that they were the villain and a particular slant on how certain events happened. Like we do with some very complicated historical figures who we've celebrated as good and now recognise their failings and vice-versa. I don't know if that makes any sense :) I'm still trying to get the lines clear in my head why somethings work for me and some just make me go ugh.
Iirc the concept of wicked is that she doesn’t become the evil repulsive character at all and that’s all propaganda by the government to suppress her cause, unlike most of those other revisionist origin story movies such as the Disney ones
Or consider that the actual theme is misinformation and manipulation orchestrated by those in power to turn threats to your power into villains in the eyes of the populace. Sound familiar?
I’m a bit excited for James Gunn’s DCU for similar reasons from his interviews. He might have his business hat on a times but he also knows how to balance it with being genuine
Everytime Obra Dinn comes along me and my wife go, The Frenchman the Frenchman!!! Because we were stuck so long on who the frenchman was in the pic and the clue was his striped shirt. Now every time we see a striped shirt we go French, FRENCH!!! What a great game that was, still hoping for another one like that.
Im not a theater kid and im not suuuuper into musicals but i love music as a whole* and i think a big part of musicals is the fundamental love of music everyone has (Or at least most people) We had music way before any form of language and i think that really plays a part as to why people love musicals and are passionate about them, because music is so natural to people (Les Miserables is an incredible musical and is one of the only ones i like, highly recommend)
As someone who also doesn't like musicals (or being around unhinged theater kids) I think it's safe to say that you're on the right side of history whenever you're triggering people who can't handle you not liking a piece of media and having an opinion that differs from theirs. Keep up the good work!
As someone whose sister was a theatre kid and had to deal with her theatre friends for many years I can say that theatre/musical scene can be a little “dramatic” some times 😂
Finally saw it today, I liked the things I enjoyed, and the things I didn't were fine. That being said I am genuinely surprised this video is the only press related thing for the movie that my RUclips algorithm suggested. Usually other movies/games I'm dodging press/trailers/leaks left and right.
It's wild how I was completely unaware of this movie until the night it released, given how much marketing they apparently did. I come out of a showing of "The Conclave" and some dude is excitedly exclaiming to me, "DID YOU JUST GO SEE WICKED!?!?!" I didn't even see the giant Wicked stand-up outside the auditorium until I left.
15:20 well said Alanah amen. It's made out nowadays that being into what you're into, if it isn't the same as everyone else's interests, it's cringey or gives them an ick and then you're just automatically labeled a weirdo for just being a normal human being. No, how bout people just like different things and are passionate about those different things. Being with a buddy and having them get so hyped up and excited about something they're so genuinely interested in always gets me so enthralled and always have to know more and at the end come out feeling closer to them because I know more about them. People have lost all sense of their own identity and shame others for not doing the same
Theater kids are an interesting group I know a bunch of them. Although they can sometimes be pretentious and I don't really care for musicals or theater. I do admire their passion for the thing they love so much.
I don't think it's real. I really really don't. You know when for instance The Little Mermaid casting came out and within an hour you could see media coverage about how many people were mad, and it was genuinely hard to find anyone mad because barely anyone were? That is what the Wicked movie hype seems like to me. Fake ass bullshit hype created by bots, AI and a stupidly large marketing budget. And I suspect in the age of AI we are going to see a lot more of this. Nonsense "hype" about movies very few people are actually excited to see. It's making money. But the hype makes it seem like it is a Barbie sized movie, and it is nowhere close to that. Which makes sense. Wicked is a over 20 year old musical that was hugely original and ahead of its time when it came out, but we are so far beyond meta fairytales being original at this point. Like Frozen came out 11 years ago. This is not a hip thing anymore. I think it will do well, because musicals for kids tend to do well. But this isn't a real cultural moment. This is fake hype created by computers. Do not go see this if you don't think it is for you. You will not like it. It's just a musical.
Yeah, came here to say basically this. It’s not real hype, it’s designed to farm engagement, every aspect meticulously crafted to get clicks and views And yeah, we’ll be seeing this sort of thing more and more These days I try and remind myself that if I see something incredibly stupid and enraging online it’s almost definitely on purpose. I try to stop getting mad, try to stop looking, stop clicking. That’s the only way to win, ignore it. See something ridiculous that inspires you to comment how ridiculous it is? Ignore it, move on, don’t buy in
@@paulodelima5705Contrary to what you hear online. A movie that grosses $570 million isn't a flop. It's not a giant hit, for sure. But the Disney remakes was progressively getting less and less money because people were catching on that they are bad. Little Mermaid was actually a little uptick in revenue for them.
This is the most I've heard of this film, I've kept my head in the ground ignoring marketing for anything "the media" wants me to like. I avoid this like the plague, because I don't like Ariana. I don't care if everyone likes her, it's just my preference. Nice coverage, I feel bad for people who do not realize what huge marketing is. Your last line, perfect 👌
I think Alanah was making that point exactly. It is so common for people to do this that we instinctually feel it is "cringe" and then when it is authentic, it is difficult to distinguish and accept. In this case, I think she argues let's give them the benefit of the doubt or at the very least, not hate on them.
@@funguy2playwith That is an excellent point. Perhaps I was defining "cringe" too narrowly in my mind. I defaulted to defining it as being too emotional. I suspect, in no small part, due to some degree of projection. That being said, I still believe that as long as there is the seed of doubt in our minds about their motives, regardless of how genuine they seem, we will continue to find their "passion" questionable.
The screaming at middling reviews just shows that the internet is such a cess pit now - you are only allowed to either obsessively love something, or obsessively hate something, and you get ripped to shreds if you dare be in the middle (ie. Wicked, Dragon Age, pretty much anything now). Some have lost that ability that you can love something that someone doesn't, and that is ok.
Regarding singing along in theaters: very inappropriate, but I don't know what everyone was expecting - these are people whose favorite artform involves characters breaking out into song in public whenever they feel like it 😊
It’s happening all over the place Alanah. There’s a guy who wrote a book the early history of Dungeons and Dragons, and he said specifically, he didn’t even realize that “Grognards” would be upset because their opinion doesn’t matter to him… All these people are massively messed up.
I feel like this video is the result of "Inside Out" characters inside Alannah's head in meltdown mode trying to save the ship, hitting all the buttons and pulling all the levers.
Yeah, as someone who pretty much keeps to myself and doesn't spend a lot of time out and about, I really only saw a very occasional ad online or on some products at the grocery store, but even then it wasn't an epidemic like she's saying 😂
I didn't hear a darn thing about Wicked until I heard people were going after Arianna Grande, I think it is, for her weight or something. I don't really understand what that was about. I don't go out to watch movies often, I don't use streaming services that often, and when I buy a movie, I do it physically and skip the previews. I also don't go on X/Twitter that much these days and haven't even found a movie community on Bluesky, and aside from some friends who won't leave facebook, I don't do anything on their either. I had no idea the play was getting a movie until a day or two before it came out, depending on when people started going after the kid for her weight. Didn't even know people were being like this about it until just now. It's amazing when you really only mess with animated movies and good video game movies, how much you can miss in other media.
I've mostly been following the reactions on reddit and thankfully I've found it's been a lot more reasonable. People have *gasp* agreed to disagree on whether they like or dislike things like the choice of colour grading and the lighting. It's polarising, but there has been a lack of being over dramatic and omg they ruined it for me. It feels like Wicked, it feels like it did something to make use of the change of medium, some things didn't work for some people. Honestly, that's why I dropped all the short-form 'I'm going to announce my view to the world' social media because it's omg so toxic. I'll keep to places where fans want to talk about it with other people and share experiences because they are actually excited about it and want to engage, not be outraged. The other kind of social media is where people want to stomp their views over someone else, possibly in a stupid feeling they are protecting something which realllllly doesn't need protecting. It's like everyone is all so defensive they'll jump on any possible thing to be outraged without thinking about that the few words they've read are from a real person who is nuanced and has many opinions and in many cases is not even going to be thinking about half the things that get read into it. Kinda Ironic with Wicked being so much about people's perception of someone by things they've heard/been told just because they are different/have a different view. I'm not a theatre kid. Introverted geek. I love the stage musical, I thought it was a great adaptation that answered (for me) my one fear - why make it a movie?. I also loved the weird original 95 book. If someone didn't like it then no worries, it doesn't take away my enjoyment. We can talk about something else instead. Even if someone really didn't like the movie (and if you don't like musicals, I totally get it) I know people that are still impressed in seeing the BTS stuff like how 'Dancing in life' was filmed with practical rolling murder wheels and people backflipping from the tops whilst they moved. We can both appreciate the effort and talent that went into that, even if we don't both enjoy the results.
The fact that they call the V/H/S franchise cheap horror movies goes to show they don't actually care about Wicked. They just pretend to because that's what the current trend demands.

Still mildly (very mildly) mind blowing to me that a writer doesn't like any musicals.
Ironically that fanaticism only lasts about 5 minutes into the next "Single and only good thing ever" that they encounter.
I don’t know how people have so many Fs to give, I have a quite a few but they’re preoccupied with concerns for family and the things I like

Honestly, the obsession with everything either being "woke" or "anti-woke" is cringe and beyond stupid.
Alt-right media is cringe and stupid, yes.
Toxic positivity is an epidemic.
You're getting toxic positivity or you're getting the truth cuz you're never getting me to agree with everyone

Also isn’t this all based on a novel written by a white male author?

Im not a theater kid and im not suuuuper into musicals but i love music as a whole* and i think a big part of musicals is the fundamental love of music everyone has (Or at least most people) We had music way before any form of language and i think that really plays a part as to why people love musicals and are passionate about them, because music is so natural to people (Les Miserables is an incredible musical and is one of the only ones i like, highly recommend)
terminally online people that haven't touch grass in years saying dumb shit? no way!
As someone who also doesn't like musicals (or being around unhinged theater kids) I think it's safe to say that you're on the right side of history whenever you're triggering people who can't handle you not liking a piece of media and having an opinion that differs from theirs. Keep up the good work!
14:25 "go live your dreams"
Totally share this sentiment and your comparison to video games. Great video!

But how will they feel validated if everyone doesn't agree with them?
8:20 WICKED THE FLAMETHROWER! The kids love this one.
I have no interest in this movie, I read the book a while back, and thought it was terrible. Meh…
People have lost all sense of their own identity and shame others for not doing the same
Chapter Master Valrak says "rumours are lies until proven."
And yeah
Indeed, this.
I’m in LA and I barely saw marketing. Will probably watch it being played in the background while over at a friend’s house.
The perks of being a personality online lol. I don't do social media anymore, but what was the horror movie?
The one Alanah herself was in. Probably. Go figure that she would promote the movie she acted in. The audacity!
Alanah was the lead actor in one of the shorts in the horror anthology movie V/H/S:Beyond
@@maraque16 ahh ok yeah I knew that, shameless plug lol. Haven't seen it yet tho. Is it any good?
@@FoolHardyQueso I thought it was great, but then, I love horror and the V/H/S series, so I might be biased.
Theater kids are an interesting group I know a bunch of them. Although they can sometimes be pretentious and I don't really care for musicals or theater. I do admire their passion for the thing they love so much.
If they made Wicked into a game I might be more interested
2:33 confirms Alanah is indeed a dad.
It’s not real hype, it’s designed to farm engagement, every aspect meticulously crafted to get clicks and views
And yeah, we’ll be seeing this sort of thing more and more
These days I try and remind myself that if I see something incredibly stupid and enraging online it’s almost definitely on purpose. I try to stop getting mad, try to stop looking, stop clicking.
That’s the only way to win, ignore it. See something ridiculous that inspires you to comment how ridiculous it is? Ignore it, move on, don’t buy in
People were mad about The Little Mermaid casting. The movie flopped.
I think the views on this video is proof this is not real
@@paulodelima5705Contrary to what you hear online. A movie that grosses $570 million isn't a flop. It's not a giant hit, for sure. But the Disney remakes was progressively getting less and less money because people were catching on that they are bad. Little Mermaid was actually a little uptick in revenue for them.
@@HermanFalckHow It is a flop. It didn't paid its costs despite being one of most popular Disney movies.
I would 100% agree with you if they, Ariana and Cynthia, weren't trying to sell me something. It feels manipulative.
Sweeny Todd is the only musical I'd ever recommend to anyone who dislikes them.
Sweeny Todd and Dancer in the Dark are both amazing.
That's the one musical I constantly forget is actually a musical! 😂
I usually cry everytime I watch Rengokus fight with Akaza and I'm almost always 3 beers deep.
I think it's also important to keep in mind that Grande has PTSD as a result of the Manchester arena bombing.
I feel like this video is the result of "Inside Out" characters inside Alannah's head in meltdown mode trying to save the ship, hitting all the buttons and pulling all the levers.
I’ve missed the marketing and not lying in your face 😆, unless main actors crying everywhere is a part of the marketing?
Starting the movie with casual racism. Neat
I held space as a joke and apparently that speeds up the video by 2x now, thanks I learned something today.
Watching your vids at 0.5 speed is funny 🤣
It actually is 😂
I can genuinely say that I've never seen any marketing for this film.
Yap yap yap jeez nobody wants to read your live journal post lol
@@NeutralGuyDoubleZero funny how you gave an example of his point about social media though
Got to love the difference between your review/analysis of wicked and moist
The fact that they call the V/H/S franchise cheap horror movies goes to show they don't actually care about Wicked. They just pretend to because that's what the current trend demands.
Ehh I mean they kinda are lol. They're fun watches but let's not act like vhs is some high brow big budget series
@@Intr0verticalright!?
Still tho😂. Shitting on well received "indie" movies cause someone critized your current fav big budget Hollywood movie ain't a good look
My mother is 92 and she is So SICK and TIRED of the Wicked marketing....... and she has a broadway musical actress for a daughter
