  • What was supposed to be a quick off roading day trip with the wife, showing her the magic of the Backway to Crown King, turned into an EPIC journey that pushed the limits of my new Tacoma in stock form.
I dragged the skid plate, hit the rear axle, dropped the truck on the frame and high centered more times than I can count.
It almost became an overland adventure when we high centered and could not get free.
These are what got me free after high centering.

I’ve done that trail 12 times. The last time probably three years ago. I have never seen that rock/water area (6minutes in). I have used lifted Tacoma‘s & Jeeps, also my 2021 Stock Tacoma. Did all bypasses find in stock. I had to build up a couple of rocks for the stair step area. Note to viewers always put your truck in 4low before you need it. This is the reason why.

The TRD Offroad is surprisingly capable, it's all about the tires 👍

I've got a 2018 and pushed those stock Goodyear's like you did. I'm impressed with this truck in stock form. All she needs is a simple lift, shocks and sliders.

You probably already know this but to get into 4Lo after 4Hi is engaged, you need to be stopped and in neutral in order to get 4Lo engaged. It doesn't engage when you are in gear.

Last Wednesday, 2/19, a Jeep JKU and me in my Jeep TJ came down the backway from CK. You are correct - it is in bad shape in places right now. JKU had 33" tires and I have 31" tires. With the Jeep's great articulation and slow and steady progress we both scraped belly skids only in one place. Articulation was the key to get thru the "creek trail" without any frame hits and that is where Toyota trucks have issues. Bigger tires, lifts, lockers are all band aids to fix the lack of articulation. Wheels in the air do not provide traction.

I did this trail back in 07 on a 04 taco 4x4 stock on 32’s BFG All terrains ,never got stuck only high centered , the trail definitely looks more rugged now than it did before . I love that crown king area !

Nice video. I ran this for the second time in my '17 Tundra alone at the first of November. I have a 3/2 lift and ended up both times with zero damage.

Love that you tried going all stock to begin with, it makes you appreciate all those mods sucking up dollars. I gotta say DOM rock sliders with kickouts are the most important first modification. Cheapest, least invasive, easiest to install and so protective from damage. Tires make a big difference but you get into needing body mount chops, suspension lifts, gears and wheels. Ah, why am I so attracted to expensive hobbies.

I once did this trail in my stock TRD off road last year with a raptor following me. I actually had to tow him up that rock ledge! This video brought back tons of great memories 😂 keep them coming.
