  • The UK is famous for elite education. Mention education and the UK abroad and people will probably think of Oxford, Cambridge or the private schools that have educated many world leaders. But is this actually a good thing? Who benefits from an educational system which concentrates financial and cultural wealth into a handful of institutions? Is this model of unequal prestige, selection and hierarchy actually compatible with a desire for a more equal society? Other more egalitarian systems of education are possible and necessary for a positive future. Moving beyond elitism in education is the educational challenge of this century. I am a sociologist and a geographer of education with a strong commitment to the politics of education and envisaging alternative futures for education and society more broadly. My interests lie at the intersection of sociology, geography and history and the central theme running through my work is how structures and experiences of power and inequality in education are reproduced over time and through different local and regional geographies. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

its clear what you are against, but far from clear what you are for. Comprehensive schools are far from a great success, which is one reason why many parents, who are far from rich, sacrifice to send their kids to fee paying schools.

So looking at education systems you'd need more equality, independence and transparency?
This makes a huge sense to me. And I'd also like to know if you think that practices like mindfulness and M.B.Rosenberg Non Violent Communication might be of help in a path toward equality and the ability to connect and decide together.

Yes, and no identity politics, no critical race theory, no ideology of any kind, no anti-white anything, no white fragility bulls--t, no "queering" of any subject, and no anti-racism training. Ever.

These are all empty buzz words, crt isn‘t being taught outside of university. And looking at one‘s own history through and unbiased lense and not blindly accepting any given narrative (e. g. American exceptionalism) is incredibly important!

Oxford: saves the world from Covid
Yes, we need elite educational establishments.
Inequality? Yeah, some people are brilliant, others are idiots. Some are diligent, others lazy; not equal.
Equality is an idiots game; unless you want everyone reduced to the lowest common denominator.
Money is money - it has no positive or negative energy.
Don't criticise the buildings, remember the fantastic institutions which reside and operate within them, generating remarkable ideas, brilliant people and helping the world.
Your rhetoric is communism and unwelcome.

I have never read something so fallacious, full of misinformation or devoid of critical thinking in my life. Equality ensures that everyone who has potential reaches that potential - not everyone or even a large portion of people who go to Oxford benefit humanity, the divide between the 'brilliant' and idiots is a false dichotomy, elite educational establishments gain the majority of the funding meaning they have more resources, meaning it is difficult to parse whether their students are more 'brilliant' at baseline or just have access to more of said resources and nothing of what the speaker said has anything remotely to do with communism. Your comment however reeks of elitist nonsense.
