      @@thenx5521 It's good to jump by 2 versions. Reason 12 just looks better, has scalable interface. Any version before that is unbearable if you have a high definition screen.

    • @Milan____
      @Milan____ 2 месяца назад +4

      Yeah, Reason 12 is gorgeous, the scalable UI _does_ make a difference in your workflow. The new UI in Reason 13 is a mixed bag, some good improvements there, the browser search is actually decent because now you have a better chance of meaningfully going through the 50'000 stock patches you get with Reason. The midi clip editing is still nowhere near as practical as Studio One, so I'm hoping future 13.x version upgrades will get Reason to at least catch up with the competition, since there isn't anything innovative going on anymore.

    Piano roll seems exactly the same. It’s just bad compared to other daws. At least show the pitch in the note, because it’s hard to tell what it is when it’s tiny. A fold option would be great too. I dunno why they keep adding synths. Everyone has to have all their bases covered by now.

  • @MillisecondFalcon
    @MillisecondFalcon 4 месяца назад +15

    Polytone and Ripley sound good but I'm not very impressed with the rest of the new features. Given how long it's been since 12 I was expecting more and really hoped they were taking the time to improve MIDI routing and MPE support to bring Reason up to par with many other DAWs. I won't be upgrading again and + is still too expensive for something I likely wouldn't use very often. I still wish they had an option of Reason with ALL the devices and NO sound packs as that would be the ideal middle ground.

    • @iTrensharo
      @iTrensharo 4 месяца назад +2

      They spent all of their efforts developing players like Chord Sequencer and synths like Objekt.
      Why put all that effort into developing one $199 upgrade (the "new" price, BTW), when you can sell thousands of people a basic $69 Chord Sequencer Player and a $99 Physical Modelling Synth? The release cycle is long because it increases the chances of them selling these things a la carte. If they released every year, people would hold off to see what was added, and by then lots of people will figure "ehh... haven't felt like it was necessary until now, so why bother?" The entire scheduling and pricing is calculated.
      Lots of people with Corporate Stockholm's Syndrome in these comments.

      Reason Studios is no longer about empowering musicians. It is solely about making profit. You can see that by their decision to block offline use for Reason 11 and earlier, which is clearly their attempt to force people to upgrade. And, of course, their aggressive marketing to coerce people into going with their subscription model instead of perpetual licensing.

      I cannot believe people are upvoting this comment, which is nothing but weak, defensive cope form a delusional fanboy.
      1. If everyone goes to another DAW for features, then Reason would be left with 500 users, and the company would fold. How would that benefit you.
      2. The same features those users are asking for, you would rave about being "amazing" when they are added. You only react in this way because you are a defensive fanboy and want to deflect from the fact that these features have long been requested, and still haven't shown up - despite Reason Studios jacking up prices by 25%. Yes, the price has gone up, and the updates are still as laughably bad as they have always been. Congratulations.
      3. Features like ARA2 and MPE are not "convenience" features anymore. They're necessities for a lot of people. Adding in another redundant synth and a Space Delay while rearranging the same basic MIDI Editor into a separate panel with some Tool Window stuff tacked onto it is not a massive workflow overhaul. It's a minimum effort update that delivers value where Reason needs it least, while still failing to deliver value where it needs it most.
      At the end of the day, I find responses like this hilarious. They don't realize just how toxic it is to the product community, as many people will not see reason to stay invested in a product that has a small community filled with delusional fanboys that cope and ask them "Why are you here?" whenever they give negative feedback about a company not delivering what so many of their users are asking for. That's the whole point of buying a product and investing in upgrades - so that the developers can deliver what the users are asking for.
      Who asked for another VA Synth? Who asked for a Space Delay? The MIDI Editor panel is fine, but overall it doesn't really improve the MIDI Editing in Reason, which is fundamentally where it is so terrible compared to other DAWs. Technologically, the DAW is still several years behind other DAWs. Why is it bad that users harp on these developers for not delivering, when these same developers have made excuses about jacking prices up 25% and you guys have gone out of your way to generate justifications for that?
      If the users see themselves as being taken advantage of - and I think this is definitely happening with this product - and the community is just going to give them a pass on it... Why should they not drop this product like a hot potato and move onto competing product lines? That's my direction.
      Investing into this level of economic disrespect is masochism. Enjoy that.
      I cannot get over these disingenuous comments, and how many people are willing to upvote them.

      @@iTrensharo Entitlement at its finest. All you do here is name call and complain that a company is not catering to your whims. The point the poster is making is, if you don't like the direction of this product and would rather have the features of another product then go there and stop spreading your negativity here.
      Which funny enough even you agree with in the end. "Why should they not drop this product like a hot potato and move onto competing product lines? "
      Your name calling and sarcastic tone are far more toxic than the post you replied to. But I imagine you won't see it that way.
      For me personally, I enjoy Reason for the devices and modular workflow. The DAW is not the highlight for me. I am happy they spend their time focusing on the devices because they are some of the best devices in my tool box. I use Reason as a plugin inside of Ableton live because I appreciate the time the devs at Ableton have spent on the DAW and the way it works and integrates with my hardware.
      Maybe try appreciating what you have instead of complaining about what you don't.
      Also it is good to remember that Reason is a company who can create whatever software they want and it is up to you to decide if you like it and want it. It is not your place to tell them how to make their software.

    In terms of engine, sound (yes sound is debatable), modularity, cables and equipment, especially the combinator, I don't yet know about Reason's serious SW competitor.
    It's quite obvious what type of users Reason is targeting today and what it is building its business on. Some are tempted, some are discouraged.

    Recently had to free up space on my PC. I had way too many DAWS and VST etc. One of the things that was first to go was R 12. I have been using Reason off and on for decades. I upgraded to 12 with a fondness for nostalgia after not using it for years since R 9. I quickly remembered why I stopped using it. It causes me anxiety. The decision paralysis it causes it too much. The modular concept and patching was novel at first but quickly grew tiresome. Even workflow and auto patching updates didn't help. That mixer was a feast for the eyes but a beast of burden. Reason is definitely a niche product for me that I just can't get into. It was tying to hard to be the studio in the box with look and feel. With that said, I'll update to R13 because even as I was writing this my fear of being left out started to creep in and R 13 may just be what I need in life?

    How are the notes too small and not easily adjusted? Ctrl + mouse wheel to adjust note height. My opinion so far is that compared to Cubase, you can nudge notes small distances more easily, you can see the grid better, you can expand the MIDI editing area to full screen height better, the interface is less cluttered, the playhead position area is easier to select, and you can get a better view of controller lanes more easily. Sure, you get more customizable options in Cubase, and Cubase seems to be seen as the king of MIDI editing. But out of the box the most important MIDI editing features in Reason are virtually identical to those of Cubase, but with less clutter.

    I switched to bitwig . Plus reason usb clock out is useless . My pa700 will not work usb midi clock out however bitwig does multiple outs . So glad I chose bitwig over Ableton. Check out bitwig I like what they're doing in the background. They surpassed reason in Ableton in so many ways. And they'll catch up when it comes to audio editing trust me. It is so awful how reason totally ignores it's audio interface engine and its midi interface to engine. Maybe you can mention this to the reason team . Maybe higher bitwig help the mud a little

    Reason 13 proves there not a top flight DAW. Reason CEO recently said he doesnt see Ableton as his competitions, he sees Netflix as his competition, Reason is being geared towards people who are pure amatures, with no chance of getting signed to majors, but want to make music for an hour or 2 a few nights a week.
    The CEO is not interested in making R13 like any other DAW, the rack plugin is now the main part of Reason, there a software company, like Soundtoys, Fabfilter, there not competition for Pro tools, Studio one etc...
    ALSO VERY SUSPICIOUS :
    No images of the mixer so far (i think they have killed off the ssl) and nothing revealed about the plugin.
    If they have kept the SSL, they are dead as a DAW. That SSL is from Propellerhead Record, from 2009, so thats 15 years Reason has not changed the sequencer or mixer, in any shape at all 15 YEARS FFS ........................

    • @iTrensharo
      @iTrensharo 4 месяца назад

      @@Tapper1969 I don't think Logic is the problem. Logic is transparent. The only way to end up with a "too processed" or "muddy" sound is due to your use of plug-ins in Logic - by overprocessing your sound of creating a muddy mix. That's a you problem, if that's the case. There are better SSL Channel Emulations on the market than Reason's. It's not hard to get a similar or better emulation of that console in Logic Pro. I mean, Plug-in Alliance's emulations are pretty cheap, better, and don't tie you to the sound of a specific console. You pick and choose the one you want to use. e.g. SSL 4000 for Rock, or 9000 for Hip Hop, etc.
      In any case, thing DAWs like Sonar and Luna have arrived at a fairly good middle ground with things like ProChannel or LUNA Extensions, and Cubase has a Channel Strip that is pretty similar. I think something like that would be nice, as well. That way, you get the benefits of a transparent mixer with the benefits of the colored processing layered on top of it.
      In any case, Logic's stock plug-ins are a particular advantage over Reason, as it's quite weak there. Lots of instruments (which Logic matches and even exceeds), but not much else.
      It depends on what you're looking for, but running around claiming Logic sounds "overprocessed and muddy" doesn't really help your case. I can guarantee you there are more tracks produced in Logic being played on the radio than tracks produced in Reason... and if you could do better simply by using another DAW, you'd have some there as well... but you don't 😐

They did this by shutting down the system of offline authorization, so if you use Reason version 11 or earlier, it needs to contact Reason Studios' server for authorization EVERY TIME YOU OPEN IT. However, if you get a new computer or need to reinstall Reason for any reason, then you will no longer be able to use offline authorization, and Reason will need to contact their server for authorization every time it is opened. Considering what other DAWs give you per number upgrade seems 'business as usual' for Reason Studios. WHo doesn't have mind blowing VST synths by now? Long time Reason only users have been screaming for housekeeping updates and improvements forever and I just don't think they get it when it comes to the competition. They make a new device then never update the functionality either. LIke making Mimic more like Dr Rex in being able to play sliced waves at any tempo. Afterall DJ software does this with ease and its 2024, the recycles pimping days are over. A simple right click route individual drum machines outputs to separate SSL channels. POOF! Time saved. A new poly synth? Who doesn't have massive sounding VSTs now? I was hoping this was an all housekeeping update. But it looks like more of the same. They HAD to address the browser by the way. You cant tag anything. Searches take for ever. Looking for things from old songs take forever. I wished more people worked for Reason Studios who could address these things. For $199 upgrade charge I expect way more considering what FLStudio owners I know get for free.

They say they have totally designed the UI and DAW functionality but time will tell.

      @iTrensharo 4 месяца назад +2

      The only thing they did was put it in its own window. The actual MIDI Editing is practically the same. Some of the Tool Window stuff has been docked alongside it. Yea, it's a workflow improvement, per se. But the capabilities of the application are still basically identical to Reason 12. It's just a rearrangement of some elements. Worthless upgrade to me. Literally zero value delivered. I don't need more synths, and I don't want more synths. But... CABLES?!?!?!?! Sorry, no.
      Virtual Instruments and plug-ins are some of the lowest value additions you can add to a DAW, these days. Look at the market, and the "Discount Economy" we're in for music production plug-ins and virtual instruments.
      For $199 I need Core DAW improvements that actually move the platform forwards and give me more creative reach or deliver higher levels of convenience: ARA2, MPE, External Audio Editor Support, Improved Windows Audio Support, Vector GUIs and Scaling, Configurable Content Install Location, Surround/Spatial Audio, Video Support, Better FX Automation Workflow, Track Folders, Better Sequencer-Mixer Synch, Articulation Maps, Theory Tooling in the MIDI Editor, VST MIDI Out support, etc.
      At this point, I'd rather produce in Pro Tools Studio than Reason 12. Unironically, those developers are delivering ACTUALLY USEFUL features and not just more redundant devices. Looks like Avid got the better investor.
      I am not supporting this.

There has been multiple instances where there will be a 3rd party RE and then Reason makes device on the same idea, for example Chord sequencer the Reason Studios Chord sequencer basically kills off the market for the 3rd party one that already exists. The new Effects devices by Reason are all things that exist either as REs or Combinators made by 3rd partys, that new Poly synth sounds good but what about REs made by Mix food, and Synapse audio, who both have great vintage REs. Why dont Reason Studios work with those 3rd partys and let them desighn and develope the REs then they could spend all there time improving the DAW.

      I just - PERSONALLY - don't care about that stuff because I already have too many Synths, Too many Virtual Instruments, Too Many Sample Libraries and Too Many Plug-ins... and anyone SERIOUS about music production quickly gets to that point once they enter into this market. They just aren't worth high upgrade prices.
      For Comparison...
      Cubase 13 Added Plug-ins and Instrument Libraries, but they also added:
      Completely redesigned the Mixer and added in the Channel Tab, Revamped the Range Tool in the MIDI Editor, Multi-Part MIDI Editing and Visibility Tab to the Key Editor, Improved their Chord Pads, Spectral Warp to the Sampler Track, Improved MIDI Step Input, Refreshed the design of their MIDI FX, added MIDI 2.0 support, Hardware Video En/Decoding, Window Management overhauls on Windows OS, and Improved Routing Options...
      All of that, for a $99 Upgrade Cost on an 18-month development turnaround. Effectively gaining ground on competitors like Reason Studios (more offered in upgrades on top of an already better feature set, at a lower cost with more frequent upgrade releases). Reason isn't even really competing at all, at this point.
      And that's ignoring the Sample Packs, Plug-ins and Instrument Libraries they added:
      Iconica Sketch, 5 really good Sample Packs, Vocoder, BlackValve Tube Compressor, Pultec EQ Emulations, Vocal Compressor, VocalChain.
      Comparing that to a basic rearranging of the MIDI/Clip Editor (which is a workflow improvement, don't get me wrong), a new FX, a new redundant synth and 3 utility devices... for [presumably] twice the price... It's disrespectful.
      I see Rack as the only way forwards, frankly, and that depends HEAVILY on what you own outside of Reason. Most of my stuff is not a rack plug-in, so Reason 12 was uninstalled. No point keeping it installed. The sequencer is cooked. It's just never going to get to a point where it can legitimately compete with what competitors have on offer.
      Competitors are already ahead, and moving much faster than Reason Studios is. It's falling behind despite still being in development.

      @@HOLLASOUNDS If FL wasn't so mediocre for studio work, people may take that more seriously. Yes, the Piano ROll is nice. Beatmakers love it, but its workflow and feature set is that of a groovebox with some studio DAW features grafted on top. It's still missing many of the same quality of life features people want in Reason, and then some. And the Mixing workflow is @$$ on top of that. It's not an alternative to Reason, in my mind.
      Reason's players don't compete well against third party options like Scaler 2, Kirnu, Cthulu, etc. What they do to get around this, is limit MIDI Routing for VST plug-ins to make Rack Extensions the only practical choice in Reason's sequencer.
      So, users end up paying more money for worse tools just to get something that functions in the way they want it to. They continue to maintain this while other DAWs are implementing VST/AAX MIDI FX Support. Weird.
