    You're an honest guy. Some stealerships would charge for replacing the whole steering rack when that small part will fix the problem. This is why I educated myself on how to maintain my own car as I was burnt too often by main dealers. Example....I was getting a shimmying when applying the brakes and the main dealer said my brake discs were warped, even though they were changed (by the main dealer) at every 12 month service. So after this happened three years running, I started to look into doing my own brakes and I found that a potential cause of this shimmying was sticking caliper pins. So I checked mine and found that they were almost seized in the caliper. I cleaned them off and greased them and hey presto, shimmying was gone.

    Great video and amazing to see someone who really knows their stuff about so many cars - Subbed! This is certainly the 'proper' way to fix this issue, but I fixed my F32 by just tightening the original thrust piece - just 5-10mm on the circumference should do it. That was 4 years and 40,000 miles ago and its still perfect. Worth a try for a DIYer.

      thanks a lot for the info! I'm having the same problem with a 2010 E89 Z4... they don't make the repair kits / the replacement parts for the E89. My only option is to tighten the thrust bush and hope that it works... otherwise I'm looking at a brand new steering rack :(

    nothing compared to the feeling you get when the chains start rattling :). These engines are bulletproof if: chain done every 100k miles, EGR/DPF delete & oil change every 5k miles. swirl flaps a potential issue too if your model has them. saw some issues (on forums) on N57 with crankshaft but not sure what causes that and seems rare enough

    • @jamesbaggaley1460
      @jamesbaggaley1460 2 месяца назад +1

      Don’t need to delete DPF or EGR… Just use it as intended on long journeys and it’ll be fine. If you keep clogging DPFs, you should be driving a petrol. Swirl flaps are also an old wives tail on anything later than early M57s. N57 swirl flaps don’t fail.

    Thanks a lot for all of the great info!
    I have the same problem, but with an E89 Z4... They didn't make the repair kit/parts for the E89... Could this problem on the F chassis hypothetically be ammeliorated by just tightening the bolt -- instead of replacing the whole thrust bush?
    I already replaced the drop links on my E89 and it did make it a little bit better... but the knocking is still there. The only other option short of replacing the entire steering rack is tightening that cap (a.k.a. yoke adjustment..)
    If you have any ideas, I would be delighted to her them!
    Thanks a lot and have good one!

    I need help 😂. I've a 340i touring. Annoying little rattle/ knock on off side front. I've replaced drop link, the longer control arm and steering bush kit. Had top mount off and that's mint condition including bearing. No play that I can see if the arb bush. And the knock / rattle is still there! Only over small bumps. Speed bumps etc doesn't do it. Tearing my hair out now. Only have the smaller control arm and track rod end to replace. But I cannot feel any play in either 😭
