    I tend to be a bit of a purist when it comes to blues tunes and favor the older renditions, but Rogers plays with such virtuosity, and makes his mark on a fine old tune without trampling all over it. It's almost like I can hear him and Johnson playing all at once. Truly remarkable work.

      Remember Robert improvised his arrangements, accounts recall no two times were the same renditions.

    Roy and Bob Brozman are my two favorites. I love how Roy does his triplets. I wish he would come back to Olympia. Roy -- you are a God on the guitar. Your vocals are awesome as well. You are one of the best blues men of our time.

    I love the way Roy takes traditional open G or A songs and plays them in open D or E....creates a unique sound......

    Impossibly, unfeasibly brilliant. The living master of country blues slide guitar. Completely respects Robert Johnson's original whilst adding something new

    An even better version of this song (IMHO) is on the 1988 CD Slidewinder (ten bucks on iTunes). He headed up John Lee Hooker's band for 4 years before going solo, & on that CD's "Terraplane Blues," Hooker sings & just lets Roy rip. If you ever have a chance to see him live go! He still plays around the West Coast a lot, and gigs with Ray Manzarek (Doors organist).

    Roy is truly an epic musician. He has so much soul and fire. Guys like Roy, Bob Brozman, & Kelly Joe Phelps make the sublime look easy. It's like they're dunking from the 3 point line. Thank you Mendo College for the incredible video and for recognizing world treasure Roy Rogers.

    I completely agree. Roy has got the blues. I used his signature pinky slide for years until I lost it somewhere. Once you move the slide off your ring finger to your pinky - it is an epiphany. I would love to see a Roy Rogers / Leo Kottke ticket in a small venue.

    I agree that Roy is overplaying this song, but it's clear that he is putting his heart and soul into it. I really enjoy his interpretation, even if it is overplayed. I listen to this song almost as much as I listen to Robert Johnson's.

    Naturally long fingers makes this kind playing possible. That's not to say that everyone with long fingers can ever play a guitar like this virtuoso, but him without long fingers would make it impossible.

    And just think, nobody had heard anything like this in Johnson's stomping grounds before until he came around. No wonder why the urban legend of him selling his soul to the devil started; it really does border on the supernatural.

    @chub4play You're suggesting this guy is better than Robert Johnson? What drug are you on?

  • @fireandashstudio
    @fireandashstudio 13 лет назад

    @TsuruCrane So there is no pain eh? I would imagine that being able to play with such virtuosity as RR might involve a bit of pain considering to time involved in devoting yourself to be able to reach this level of skill in playing. But then I gues we can ignore skill, clarity, and artistic creativivity just because somebody else says he hurts.

    He's crazy fast, I'd say faster than RJ, however RJ plays more soulful and he's also a fantastic singer. Roy is not that good of a singer, but a crazy good guitaristt!

  • @Megabaconpants
    @Megabaconpants 13 лет назад

    Pain? He doesn't play with pain? That's because his pain is sitting in the front row drooling.

  • @robertcasey7623
    @robertcasey7623 12 лет назад

    He used a thumb pick......

  • @ricardblanc
    @ricardblanc 12 лет назад

    Quite cool version, however Roy is seriously over playing this song and I wouldn't be playing the E chord, it hardly needs it. The beauty of Terraplane blues is its sophisticated simplicity..which eludes many performers.

  • @Tanello82
    @Tanello82 13 лет назад

    no mean of blasfemy (about comparing RJ), but if Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil for the sake of playing.....this guy must be in even deeper shit!!
