- In this episode I am trying to decide whether to go back to the old well and try to dig it deeper or keep digging on the new well.

You need to find away to add more weight on top of the bit. The bit will bounce on the rock (kinda like a jack hammer). Because of the flex in the pipe. It's not like a drill bit going through wood. Use more weight to help it dig in when it is bouncing.
In oil and gas sometimes a fresh well just a little ways off produces a lot better. Lots of potential reasons. Silt clogging up the flow over time from producing too fast can be one. In water I think you can get subsidence as the area dries up and the sand or whatever host collapses. Kills the recharge rates and flow maybe even the aquafer. New hole might get a fresh spot in there to produce from.

drilling deeper in the old well would depend on the size of your casing. the new well would have need to be cased smaller and could mean a new smaller diameter pump.
Good to know :) I think we are going to try a different bit out before we decide if we are moving back to the old well.
Not sure where you are in the process currently but as long as you're making headway don't give up, you will eventually get there.
You should see if you could find a PDC bit. They take less weight to drill. But do tend to be pricey.
No seriously about the TNT. I've heard stories about old timers "shocking" wells with it. It was a job some guy would go around blowing wells ( giggle, I know😁) maybe It was just the oil industry, idk.
Not just old timers. Just today a well service recommended "blowing" my water well. I didn't understand what that meant.
heck are water here in ks where im at is only 15ft deep but the only reason ive heard its easier to drill a new hole is cuz most of the time when people stop with the old well its cuz they hit rocks or something and its slow going so they stop since there in water already but if u move over 4-5feet it might not have any rocks in the way and go Right down and yes u want to add as much weight as u can and keep up the great vids!
Could a different bit drill faster? Do they get dull? Just curious. I know nothing about it, but I drill metal a lot and a dull bit is tediously slow and then a fresh bit BAM! It goes right through.
I would imagine they do but I'm not to sure how to tell :/ I will have to look it up and see what I can find :)

You did not show the bits you used? Plz show that!
The bit could be an issue. Try to find a good replacement.
Not sure why one would say its easier to drill new, but the pay off could be greater.
If the surrounding wells are 225+ft and you are 70ft shy of that then yes, try to go deeper in your existing well. Makes sense, right. I mean, 150ft to hit 300 is less time and effort and wear on machinery than drilling a fresh 300ft. One thing you dont want is to poke a bunch of holes around your property. Of course you know this. - I would still look into the possible wore out bit issue.

its an arid desert full of clay ,is it not!, so OC that's exactly what they should be doing and making dry **canals and deep ponds to direct all this *hilly runoff to the local area all over the desert and man made tree lines etc so as to capture every single drop and get it staying around as per the lessons of Meet Yacouba Sawadogo -- The Man Who Stopped the Desert.

** hell they could even use a generic 10" auger drilled to just 6 foot and then slowly drag it back and forward to breakup the baked and crusty sub(soil#?) surface, and so make it far easier for the limited water to get down and stay where its needed.

Trenching with an Auger
We have a better bit that we can use but we haven't tried it yet. It’s bigger and I’m not sure if our little rig would handle it. It sounds like a new well would be worth the effort in the long run. I think we will exhaust all of are options before we try and dig the old well deeper. Thanks for your help :)
everest 333 sure, if ya want to take a chance at contaminating your water supply, dig 1,000 holes.

sure, its aways easier to just keep taking what you can get, and drive for pumped water when you run out ( assuming you have gas money to get there and back OC) , and not even try and put at least something back... someone like Yacouba Sawadogo can do all that effort so others can benefit and then take the improved land for themselves....
it's not very likely any water that drained into the arid desert land will be contaminated , unless you are intentionally adding contaminants and not processing your stagnant water tanks water before you drink it OC, but whatever, you makes your choice and live with it...
