Thank you, I just finished replacing my crank handle using your paper clip method and it worked beautifully. I appreciate it very much.
+Tanner Kleinhen Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
had to do it on my 95 dakota today and did not have the proper tool, those paperclips worked for me in 5 seconds, FANTASTIC! great video very helpfull, keep them coming.
I had to change both external door handles on my Toyota and when I realized i had a manual window crank (instead of the automatic in your other video) I was bewildered, but got right back on RUclips and found this video. The paperclips worked perfectly in seconds effortlessly. Thank you!
paper clip trick worked great. did it pretty easy. i took a rag and jammed it in between that plastic washer and crank handle which also pulled it away from the door panel a little bit. TY
I take what I commented earlier back. I didn't give up. I gave it a try with the paper clips anyway and I won!! In fact, when I got the door handle clip up high enough, I pulled the clip out with my long finger nail. I give you 2 thumbs up because you saved me money. Thanks a whole lot..
loved the jerry rig way of doing it. Sometimes its not affordable to buy a tool you will use only once. Please do more like this.
I learned how to change in alternator in 12 mins with your videos, did it in 30. Saved me $. Thank you
using the papper clips is the onlything thats worked for me thanx!!!!
Thanks for the video! The video was a big help! I got a Window Crank Removal Tool from the Auto Parts Store down the street and it was a snap removing the OEM (GM) handles from my 1987 Camaro. The replacement handles were a little more challenging. They came with set screws and required a bit of acrobatics and contortion to get them installed, but they look great! Thanks again for the help, A1Auto is #1 in my book!
You're welcome. Have a great day!
Worked on Pontiac Grand AM. Thanks for the tip! I tried a bunch of other methods like the towel and saran wrap trick, but those didn't work for me. I did your paper clip trick, and it worked like in 30 seconds, haha. Thanks again.
thanks for the video!! I got a 98 s-10 with manual windows and needed to remove the door panel, bought a universial tool for 6 bucks and tried to figure out how to use it but couldn't figure it out so I searched youtube and this video came up after watching the video I tried again and the handle came off in less than a second so thanks again for the video
I used safety pins to get the crank off of my 2000 Cavalier 2-door z24,
THANKS FOR THE HELP!
Thank you. Another good vid form 1A Auto!! You realize that most of us are not going to be doing this often enough to bother buying the tool.
Excellent. I used the two paper clip method, and it worked like a charm.
Congratulations on the successful repair. We're glad the video helped you out. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Very useful video, had to lubricate the window guides on my Nissan Almera and was struggling to understand why the handle wouldn't ease off with leverage. The clip was quite loose, so only required one hook to pull it out. Confused me a bit that the previous repairer had installed the clip upside-down :) Thanks for the info!
One of these two methods shown should work for you.
Great tip. I'll add that the ideal position for the driver's handle with the window fully up is 3 o clock (9 o clock for the passenger side).
+keneblana Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
Thanks for that little trick.
thx man i was going crazy tryign to get that handle off i was trying to replace my factory door spkers in my lil dodge neon this helps me out a lot
Great tutorial! Rather than paper clips (i failed at a few attempts) i ended up using one coat hanger bent in the same fashion suggested. thanks again, you saved me from, looking all over for my chilton book i lost sometime ago
Hi thanks for your reply. After I found out that it's called a window regulator,I watched your excellent video on replacing it.
Thanks again
This video Literally saved me over 100$ that mechanics wanted to charge for the work. Thank you guys for posting videos like this
Awesome! Thank you for including a one-time-use method. Saved me time and money!
@madmike26inch No problem at all. Thank you for visiting our channel on RUclips.
There should be a clip that holds them on, unless there's some type of cap in the center of the handle with a screw under it. You may want to take a closer look to see if this is the case.
Thank you so much. It was a little tricky with the two clips, but I did it.
if youre watching this video post 2022 you are a living legend
If you don't have a tool handy, but you have a fork you don't mind ruining, bend or cut off the two center prongs, it worked perfectly for us.
we always ran a rag just behind the handle and then rotate around the handle until it snags. Then give a quick little yank. Everyone's got a rag handy, or just use the bottom of your shirt LOL.
You make it look so easy
Thank you. Great. Easy. Paper clips worked first try.
@sleepydreammaster The correct tool is a window crank removal tool, the other tool(s) are paper clips.
What a guy! Many thanks. Peter Kemp, New Zealand
An old shop towel works too, slide it between the washer and the handle. Then work it back and forth, it will snag the retainer and pull it free. Much faster then using pins.
Once the window regulator is unbolted from the door, you should be able to maneuver it out of the hole in the door shell. Hope this helps you out.
paper clip worked fine on GEO PRISM. Thanks for the tip.
This is a real labor saving solution. I see how hard it is and decide I can live with my 2001 Frontier window cranks with the knob missing until the crank itself fails.
+Tom Trask Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
Cheers for the video paper clips worked a treat on my 1996 Holden Rodeo :)
@vtechkidd It's a window crank removal tool. There's not really a fancy name for it other than that.
I got the clip off while trying to get the first paperclip(I had 2 bent) into position! Thanks a lot for the tip!
@Azadi1111234 Sorry about that, yes I meant to say window crank removal tool. There doesn't really seem to be a wrong way to put the clip back in. You should be able to get it back out with the tool.
@laurajdahl If it has a window crank similar to the one in the video then yes it will come of basically the same way.
@Azadi1111234 You should be able to turn the door handle into position so that you can get at it, or you should be able to remove if with the door handle removal tool from the opposite direction. Hope this helps you out.
Thank you for the help paperclips worked great!
Thank you so much for this video. I've been searching and searching for this exact information!
mystery solved. thanks 1A Auto!
Thanks for watching. Have a great holiday. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
This worked so well for me ! On a Toyota echo 2000, it took me 2 mins to remove the crank with paper clip ! Thank you so much for this great tutorial !
I almost destroyed the crank handle !! Thank you for the tips and calming down my anger with the door !!! Thanks !
The tool is just called a window crank removal tool. You should be able to buy one at your local auto parts store.
Thank you! I've gotten mine removed and installed on my 84 Fiero thank you :)
@skeletonshady There's not really a fancy name for it other than being called a window crank handle removal tool. You can find them in the help section at the local parts store.
Awesome! Thanks for the tip
+3BricksHigher Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
Awesome video. Quick question. Do you have a video in replacing the part that the window handle goes connected to. To be clear is the window crank handle goes connected to a small piece that stick out the door panal. I dnt know that part name. I need to replace that piece. Thanks
It would be part of the window regulator. We may have a video on it depending on the vehicle. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Ok. My truck is a 2000 Chevy silverado 1500
It helps
@jipolin Glad to Help! Please check out 1A Auto dot com next time you need a part to fix your Toyota Echo. Don't be afraid to tell your friends either! :)
Who else thought as a kid that spinning this crank is like being in a tank trying to turn the turret in a life or death situation.
Great video - Thank you!
@Azadi1111234 Sometimes it's hard to see the clip in there. The window crank removal tool should work for you.
All done. Thank you for the help!
Do you have the series number of the truck?
holy smokes thats a clever little trick!!!!
The clip is what hold the crank handle to the window regulator stud. Without that clips the handle should come right off.
@chewylobo Glad to help! If you need parts or information please check out our website and/or RUclips channel
Mike
Bro, Just slide a SHOP RAG up in the slot on one side and jerk it up.. Works EVERY TIME and like a charm to pop the clip up and out. SIMPLE..
It should come off as shown in this video. There should be a clip behind the crank handle that holds it onto the window regulator.
Sometimes it can be tricky, the methods shown in this video should work on your vehicle.
86 nova handle removed, thanks!
Yep just did the rag trick. A fold a rag once, slip it between the handle and the washer pull it against the stem and it forces the clip out.
I love how you make it look so easy. ;-)
It may be pretty involved. You may want to fix the master window switch it that's the issue.
Hey, thanks for your awesome DIY videos. The little metal cylindrical piece that the crank holds on to broke in half while trying to crank my window one icy winter morning. What is that piece called and how do I replace that? Thank you!
this helped me put it back on. thanks
+kelow low No problem. Glad to hear it helped you out. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Truly a lifesaver thanks so much man💪💪💪🙌🙉🙉💯

Awesome videos...very helpful indeed. Is there one for repairing my window roller uppers. Right now im using a vicegrip on one and the other one...the window just slides up and down, vice grips wont work...everything seems stripped. 1996 honda civic dx...im thinking of buying a 2000 honda civic ex, are the parts interchangeable? Thank you. Aloha.
+By Grace Alone Thank you for checking us out. Some parts will be interchangeable, while others will differentiate based on the trim model. 1aauto.com
1A Auto Parts thanks for replying...realized it's a 2002 tho. dagnabbit.lol.much Aloha!
SUPER HELPFUL. THANKS
@lovejuancarlos That's part of the window regulator. Take a look at or website 1aauto.com we might have one for your vehicle.
Do you have that tool for removing the window handle at your site?, and if so what is it called so I could search for it at the site because I have no idea what it is. Thanks
Awesome as usual!! Thanks for posting!
Ok thanks. I'll try it . And let you know.. thanks for responding.
1998 cheyenne. Do you have a video on replacing the window lifting Assy. My gear bushing is wor out and jams when I crank it.
Very help full
Reallllyyy Helpful! thank you very much!
this helps thanks
great video, really helpful, thanks
Thank You! This video was very helpful :)
exactly what I needed to know - thanks!
i have a sunfire also and i tried that but i can't get the paper clips to hook onto the clip. is there any thing other than that that will help?
We honestly don't know how to fix the master switch. Do you have that part on your website?
That's tool is made to remove door panels. You could use a putty knife.
Used a bobby pin....perfection! Thank you!
You may be able to do it, but it more than likely will be a little involved with finding all of the correct parts.
Thanks for checking us out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
that is great thanks for the help!!
Is there a part number for washer shown? I don't remember seeing one when I pulled that handle off, but now it make sense as to why I can't put it back on?
There's a clip that's shown in the video that hold the handle to the regulator shaft that sticks out of the door panel. Is that the part that you're looking for ?
1A Auto Parts Is the clip circular? It was referred to as a washer in the video.
1A Auto Parts Hey if use this tool to refit some new speakers into my doors will it still work fine putting it back together
Thanks.... i was trying to use muscle... clips are strong though.
Unfortunately we do not have the power window switch at this time.
Is it the same way with a 97 jeep wrangler sport? Thanks.
You should be able to buy them at your local parts store.
I have a 1993 Chevy Lumina Euro Sedan. The driver side window control is broken and all the windows no longer respond. One idea was to turn all windows into manual. How would I do that?
