  • This was filmed from a tram and shows the streetlife of Ealing, London in 1901. It was originally filmed to show at a fairground and similar events and was meant as a form of entertainment for members of the audience to see if they could spot themselves or someone they knew. Can I say thanks to the BFI for posting this. I too was born in Ealing and it is a shame that it has changed so much. Although I loved Ealing, Ealing Broadway has become a bit of an eye soar. It really was beautiful at the time this was filmed.

    This footage is amazing I often wonder if I could go back in time to when this was shot how would I be perceived as a black man walking through the streets of Ealing in 1901. I've lived in Ealing most of my life and find old footage of the area very intriguing.

      +R Sosa You would probably have been stared at but without malice. The novelty of someone black would cause people to stop and gawp. You are right, these little films are intriguing and are like little slices of time travel.

      @@Mithrasboy Comparable to isolated or monocultural areas without any Black people. Gawking is a common thing.

      I’m looking for footage of my family’s shop that was on The Green in Ealing. It was called ‘Hirons Bros’. From late 1800s onwards. If you spot it on any video I’d appreciate you getting in touch. Thank you.

    amazing. the little girl crossing the road in front of the tram brings the sceen into sharp focus, like she is breaking out from the ranks of orderly perambulation to tell us something through the expanse of time.

    I have lived between Ealing Broadway Station (Nat West Bank ) and Ealing Common in London for four years . This is just the film of the area. I bought old photos of the very same place in circa 1900 (Ealing-The mall). I can see the tram in the old photoes as well. Thank you! From Tokyo, Japan

    It's an incredible thing to see, I have walked these streets many times but these people will never do so again. Time has literally stood still on this video.

    Wow hard to believe Ealing was that busy back then. The Natwest building is still the same.

    Amazing footage. Ealing has always been a nice place. It is such a shame that the planners have allowed Ealing Broadway and the Mall to degenerate into a plethora of one pound shops, arcades, downmarket bars and bus lanes.

    That was a real treat - thank you. I think ealing has lost a lot of its character through the times…its a shame.

    I half expected to see Monty's Restaurant on the left at 0:40 it's been there so long.

    I could watch these scenes for hours. So strange seeing some familiar buildings but people milling about dressed for a costume drama - but it was real to them. Like the little girl who runs across the street at 0:21 - what was she hurrying for? She has become a shade now as we will soon.

    Some marvellous footage of old Ealing at the turn of the 20th century.
    All this movement is now at rest - now they know nothing and are
    gone forever.
    As the poet sings -
    We are here but one day it will be as though we were never here.

    Great footage, thanks for posting. You notice straight away the trees and also all the Union Jacks. Were the flags for something specific or just 'normal'?

    • @peterc.1618
      @peterc.1618 2 года назад

      Bearing in mind that Queen Victoria had died early in that year I wonder whether the flags were out in honour of the new king (Edward VII). Or maybe the Union Flag was just flown more often in those days.

    @leybourne42 Excuse my complete lack of comprehension, but it was the "multicultural swamp" quote that caught my eye. I asume you have moved to a mono culuture.

    Too offensive for anyone to see these days of course.

    My mum and dad bought in Ealing in about 1947. It was named the Queen of the suburbs, but diversity has ruined it. Become like the Wild wild East.

    I was born and raised in Ealing and love the place dearly. I hate what it has become, a 'multicutural' swamp. I left it, and the country some years ago when I could take no more politically correct crap
    Just look how elegant the place was back then. Thankfully the people in the film are all dead, I'm sure they would be heartbroken to see what has become of their once beautiful town.

    So you left it because of all the immigrants! Now you are one yourself how ironic! I too have lived here all my life and still love the place. Just off to have a curry.

    + Greenrate. All rather puzzling. It is axiomatic - though obviously not to you - that I was not thinking about time and space.

  • @leybourne42
    @leybourne42 13 лет назад

    @BelvueSchools Surely you know there's no such thing as a mono culture these days. I take it Belvue is some sort of 'special school'.? that might explain your lack of comprehension.

  • @BelvueSchools
    @BelvueSchools 13 лет назад +1

    @leybourne42 That was irony clearly you missed it. So not a bad CV leybourne 42 don't like multiculturalism and having a pop at people with learning difficulties. I'm glad you left! One less bigot.

  • @leybourne42
    @leybourne42 13 лет назад

    I didn't say it was because of immigrants, I said it was because of political correctness..Not the same thing at all.
    It appears that reading and comprehension were not your top subjects at school
    How Ironic.!
