One thing that always makes me smile/laugh is when Dusty tells 1100-1800 lb Bison to shoo, you need to shoo😅and they move. That doesn't work on my 10 lb cat to get off the counter

Hi Dusty! Great video. I've been thinking about you guys and this cold snap. Yeah, get Cora one of those blankets that horses wear in the cold. Maybe next year you could really think about building her more of a small enclosure, inside the barn, that will hold her heat better. She'd be happy with a donkey you know, for a buddy, if you don't want another horse yet. Donkeys can be so sweet.

horses do not need blankets, if you start to blanket them they will not grow the winter coat needed to handle the temps. As long as she has shelter out of the wind, food and water she will be just fine. I have had horses 40+ years and the only time we ever used blankets was on a vets orders (rescue horses usually) and my horses are always on outside/pasture boarding when I have to board (I don't have any right now but my daughter does). She has the dogs, chickens, and cats for buddies.
I have noticed down here in south Texas where I live horses have blankets on also. Heat lamps for chickens, and dogs. Maybe Rusty is planning on doing those things still.

@conniefreeman3334 Down in south Texas, the horses and cattle do not grow heavy coats--because you rarely have such cold weather. You do not get blankets for horses unless they are in a narrow stall or supervised by a caretaker because they can get strangled by it.
Eastern IA has -17 temperature last night with windchill -40's with forecast down -20s temperature with windchill worse for tonight. (Sunday). We are retired and no animals anymore. But watching you and other channels caring for your animals in cold temperatures brings back memories. Take care.

Plz let Cora r stay in doors in a corner of your barn..somehow. The wind chill is terrible. We are just miserable in NW WA state..the Frazer River Artcic air mass came roaring down like a freight train..it dropped 40 degrees in a few hours… and. wind whipped up wite caps on Puget Sound. ❤. I was wondering how you all did the job keeping the bison safe. I like the fact that you show all the ins and out of bison farming. I have learned a lot, and I am glad that you are on RUclips to teach us all. It is cold all over and this too shall pass. And before you know it spring will be here, and this cold snap will be a memory. Your bison have a mind of their own and they are tough, very smart also. Your chickens and Cora will survive if given the opportunity to keep warm. So, stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.

Big Joe is a riot. He is such a big puppy dog. He totally loves to decorate himself with hay and other plant material. I hope Eleanor gets back with the herd when it gets this cold so she stays warmer and safer. Dunbar is looking a bit fatter and more healthy size wise and his hide is looking better too. The extra TLC is working. He should be able to add that 200-300lbs back and maybe more. My area of West/NW Iowa got about 12/13” of snow in two storms with whiteout blizzard conditions. Enormous drifts taller than our DOT snowplows and snowblowers. Icy roads too. Zero visibility. Easily over 1000 auto assists, several hundred wrecks and close to 100 injured and no fatalities. Temps have been -19/-20F for the love with -47/-50F wind chills/feels like temps for several days. Pretty normal weather for us Iowans.

I'm in Eastern Washington and I'm feeling the chill. It is January 14 and it is 10° at 4:00 pm. I have 2 pairs of socks, pajamas, a quilt, a dog and a cat on me. I'm freezing.

Dusty, it would be a good idea to get a blanket for Cora. Especially once you start working her. A wet, thick coat takes a LONG time to dry and a chilled horse is an ill horse. Blankets keep heavy coat from forming OR when sudden cold snaps hit, you can prevent getting chilled.
Hint for Cora's water tub, float an untreated 2x4 that way if you have to bust ice hit the 2x4 not the tub. (I live in the northeast and usually have to run tank heaters, but have used the 2x4 early in the winter)

About the only thing you need to do for bison is make sure they have water and food. Of course not letting them get stuck in a snow drift might be an issue in a blizzard. A large open shed should suffice though snow fences might be useful if you are subject to that kind of weather. It is presently 14 degrees F at 11:39 AM on 1/16/2024 in Southern TN. Water is a solid and the snow pack is too cold to be very slick.

Cold in Oklahoma? Here in Montaña right now, it’s-17 degrees and -47 degrees with the wind chill factor.
When you think about it, 32 is freezing, so -17 + -47 = - 64 degrees. Now that is damn cold. My hands always suffer the most.
The Donkey idea is a good one. They fight like heck to protect their “herd.” They can be brutal to coyotes and even wolves I’ve heard. Read a little bit about them and how they protect farm animals. Between your farm dog and a donkey, you’ll be well protected at the Ponderosa. Cora could use a quilted nylon blanket to wear for those super cold days and nights. It’ll keep her dry too. Love watching your Bison utubes. Stay warm there.
Dusty can’t tell you how much I enjoy your channel. I’ve learned so much about the life on a farm and so much about bison. I’m not in any way a farmer but am fascinated by these animals. And you are such a great guy and a marksman. Saw you shoot the wild pig and the coyote from >100yards. Wow!

Horses didn't wear blankets way back when. Their metabolism changes to help them handle the cold. Today, it's ones with a show clip or stay inside all the time who need blankets.
@@Cricket2731 Our horses in WI never had blankets either and they were outside all winter. They did have a shed they could go in to get out of the wind.

24 degrees & windy here in Kingsbury,Tx high was 28 heater in well house & water dripping dogs & cat in house hoping we don’t get a surprise like 2 years ago when we dropped into teens. Be safe stay warm ❤

Nice to see how you take care of your animals. Yes, it was so cold here in Colorado. Today is warmer and nice. Tomorrow also should be in the 50's and Friday the Temps drop again. It's not as cold but only in the teens. The only livestock I have are 2 older llamas, chickens, and ducks. My son takes care of them for us as my health isn't good.

New England started to feel the arctic blast yesterday with today being bad chill and wind and snow squalls all day long. I am supposed to go grocery shopping tomorrow but think I will cancel since by then it will be in the negative temps.

My kids have horses & their coats thicken up for winter & they don't go inside. It's nature, Spring they shed.

Dunbar would have helped you unroll that bale!---Here on the California Central Coast, 10 miles from Surf Beach, I had ice in my birdbath two days, & ice on my car windows one day. Both are not unknown for my area, but also unusual. Some rain, but skimpy so far.---Looking forward to more weather reports, I watch the forecast for your area daily.
Dusty if you had. Tractor a Hustler bail feeder would be perfect for you. You put a bail in it and it holds one on the end. It unrolls bail in a line and you have the other bail for Dunbars herd.
