In today's video we take out the new hydrabed truck to feed hay to the Big Joe Herd. We show how we can roll out each bale and how to spread it out so that all of the bison can eat. Also, Marc our good friend comes over to get a saddle on Cora for the first time.

There is a reason why hobbling is not recommended. It’s simply because if she feels trapped she’s likely to panic. If that happens it will accelerate really fast and if she trips and falls down, you now have a double negative association for her with saddling. Not to mention trying to get hobbles off a thrashing horse would be a nightmare. It would make future schooling that much harder. Horses remember trauma and it makes undoing it very difficult. No one intends for it to happen, but it’s a horse and they are very good at doing the unpredictable. Young horses even more so. So that’s the opinion of one horse person with 46 years of experience. Just be careful.

I would hope that you gave her more time, because of the bones growth plates fully maturing is extremely important as one started too young get lower leg ailments and injury., including fractures. If you or Mark do it right, you don't need to hobble her to put a saddle on her. You introduce it to her, reassure the saddle nor the pad will eat her. You need to build her trust with the saddle & pad, not force it on her by adding hobbles.

    • @CrossTimbersBison

      @CrossTimbersBison I guess.
I've never had to hobble any of mine.
But that is an old time way to break broncs that cowboy's used when out on the range & had no way to confine them when working on the untangled young stock. 😊🤷‍♂️

      @-LoveGrandma 7 месяцев назад +6

@@CrossTimbersBisonif you built her trust then you should feel comfortable in not basically tieing her feet together. I have been around horses all my life and haven’t ever seen any of my friends/family have to do that, I guess because the horses truly trusted the person. Maybe you should have trusted her to trust you?

To center the hooks in the bale why don't you get a stick painted bright red with a pointed end and stick it in the middle of the bale where you can see it and when you get to the stick, poke it in and just remove the stick. That way you are hitting the middle everytime. I grew up on a farm and used to come with all kinds of crazy ideas.

Hey Dusty, we’ve found it very helpful and safe to build a gated area inside your entry gate so you can pull your truck in and close the gate behind you before opening the other gate in front of you to enter the pasture. Then after feeding your round bale perhaps the bison will be distracted by the hay and not try to follow you back into the gate area where you exit the pasture.

    • @applemac100100

I agree, I have started a lot of youngsters ( IMO she is too young) from thorobreds, sport horses, farm hacks to kids ponies, I have never used hobbles in fact I never owned any. I never had a youngster buck or throw itself around even the first time being saddled. Mind you I would never chuck a heavy western saddle on a baby like that anyway. Sorry but I really dislike the gung ho western macho style of horse "breaking" 😪

I miss being around hayburners. Mine was a stallion. I had to lunge him quite a while to get him calm and lose the spottiness. He was a GOOD boy, solid black Quarter Horse with a white star on his forehead. LONG legged, about the same height as a thoroughbred he hung out with. He was best buds with a Line-backed Dunn gelding. I was known as "The Carrot Pimp". I always had a sack of juicing carrots as treats for "the kids". Getting them to come to me was never a problem, they KNEW who The Carrot Pimp was. A LOT of fond memories when I drive through and smell horse country/stables. I lunged him a LOT, and when it was time to hire a trainer to break him, she hopped on him, and he accepted it just fine. I'd already gotten him used to wearing a saddle and would lunge him with a saddle. I didn't get to ride him much; he was just two (I'm a big guy) and I didn't want to hinder his structural development by working him that hard while so young.

You may want to in stall another gate about 30' back. So you can pull in the close that gate then open the one for the pasture and pull through without having to get back out and close it. When When you get ready to leave pull in close it and open the outer gate.
Also when you pick up the roll of hay and set it on the truck that would be a good time to remove the wrap so your not having to get out in the pasture unnecessarily with hungry bison all around you. I work in a refinery and we are always looking for things that can hurt us and ways to eliminate them.
These are just some of my observations . Love your videos say safe out there.

It is so much safer with the Hydrabed, and if you're not videoing, to put the hay out. I didn't see if it had a bin (whatever it's called) to put feed in to pour out your feed for the bison? I saw on another of my channels I watch they have a combination hay and feed shoot thing. They raise longhorns and cattle, and it makes life much easier for them. Just wondering. 😊
Cora is gonna learn to love to be lunged. I know, I had an Arabian stud I started thing off with a little bit of lunging, so he'd be a little calmer to ride. I did it again a little to help cool him down after riding him, got the saddle off, and once he was cooled down I'd brush him down, then fed, and water for the night. (I lived in Az, it was hot and he'd sweat) There wasn't a round pen where we stabled him but it doesn't really matter, as long as you have enough room to lunge the horse.
She sure looked pretty with the sun setting down behind her. God bless. 😊❤

What a beautiful horse. She looks like she's got some quarter horse in her. Such beautiful yeys. Like your new equipment to make haying the bison easier and safer! I tender trained my Arabian. In a round pen, he would go until he was tired then turn toward me and stop with his ears pointed to me as if " Can I stop now?"

Cora IS a Quarter Horse as Dusty mentioned at the time he got her. I love old Arabians (not today's halter Arabians).

Please get more information on how to train a horse. I was appalled to see you trying to fast track the process. There are utube videos that will help you.

Have you guys ever thought of putting a double gate system with automatic gates at the entrance to the fields? That way you can enter the 1st gate & set out behind you. Then use the automatic gate to open the 2nd gate and leave it open until you exit the field. That way you could close the truck a gate would be closed at all times, and you wouldn't have to get out of the truck at all if you cut the net off before entering the field. I think that would be safer for you as well.

Dusty, if want to train your horse correctly, go to Steve Young horsemanship and watch his videos. He is the best.

I’m sure he’s great, but I’ve got someone here locally that can help.

She doesn't trust your local guy. You listen to her at all or just do what you are told is best? You are different with the bison, you listen to them.

I don't understand why you're not removing the net from the hay bale when you cut it before you enter the gate into where the bison are? I don't think removing the net when you cut it will cause it to unroll before you take it where you want to unroll it to feed the bison.

Do you think you’ll get another horse for Cora’s company?

That horse needs the ground work but she should not be ridden until she is closer to 4 years old. I have never seen a saddle put on a horse with tying up the feet. She’s not gonna trust people if you do things like that.

You’ve taken away Dunbar and big Joe’s macho show for the girls. Here they were providing them with all that hay.. and now you’re doing it. 😂😂😂

I know Cora is beautiful and you got her for your daughter. But your daughter needs to have a well trained calm mature horse to learn on. If her horse experiences are scary early on, and young horses can be more spirited, she will never grow comfortable and love horses. Buy a well broke friend for Cora.

Brooks will not be training on Cora. Brooks is only 4. Broke older horse would be better for sure.

I like you not being locked in the skid-steer when delivering the Hay Dusty.
I feel your safety is more important than any other thing and climbing on the back to cut the string is a good idea as long has you take care. Which I know you do. A sensible person that you are. Keep Doing what you do has safe has you can.😂

I must have missed something. Hoss & Big Joe? I thought Hoss & Dunbar were together.
