      @@sandtoy11510 yes I get that. But that script was so well tailored to Curley. It’s a shame. In the late 70s I went to school in Chicago - the Biograph theater showed a three stooges festival one weekend in which I attended. It was packed! And all was well until about an hour in when they showed a Three Stooges featuring shemp , not Curley . The Theatre went crazy they literally had to stop that reel and then only show Curley from that point on it was fabulous!!!

    Even though Curly's cameo appearance was used in HOLD THAT LION at a time when he was feeling better, his cameo role as the quick tempered chef in MALICE IN THE PALACE was deleted because his failing health affected his performance. Afterward, he suffered further massive strokes. In 1952, Curly died from stroke related complications at age 48.

    The story is Curly's scene in Malice in the Palace was deleted because of how frail he looked as a result of the strokes. The story about his strokes affecting his speech is also probably true. Also, according to Moe, the Four Stooges scenario was discarded because of Curly's poor health. He was quoted as saying "The Four Stooges could not be sustained." That had to be because of Curly's health.

    Malice in the Palace is one of four shorts that ended up in the public domain. It's also one of four shorts remade using fake Shemp. The Marx Brothers went from four to three. There were at least five in total. Shemp was a Stooge first. Curly replaced him. After his stroke, Shemp came back.

    • @timmcinnes2594
      @timmcinnes2594 2 года назад +1

      "Malice in the Palace" was made in 1949, when Shemp was in good health, no need for a fake Shemp. Fake Shemp was used in a 1955 short "Rumpus in the Harem" after Shemp had died. "Rumpus in the Harem" uses some footage from "Malice in the Palace", along with fake Shemp, who is considerably taller than the real Shemp.

    Curly was my favorite of the Stooges, and it was fun to see him on screen with Moe, Shemp and Larry at the same time. He had problems remembering his lines in several episodes, and that could have possibly been part of the reasoning behind the scene in Malice in the Palace was deleted. According ro Moe, they tried to put him in other episodes as well, but none of them worked out that well, and those scenes were also left on the cutting room floor. May they all continue to Rest Peacefully.

      @@icyshack5946 I read that, too. Cohn was stupid doing what he did; his piss poor treatment of Curly cost Columbia their MVS (Most Valuable Stooge), and paved the way for Shemp's return. And you may know the fact that Curly's unhealthy eating and heavy drinking started after his second wife divorced him in 1940. Unfortunately Curly made himself believe that women would find him unappealing because of his shaved head, which to me, was a copout.

    Yeah I heard about his cameo in Malice in the Palace. Shame we didn't get to see him but maybe it would've been to sad because of his health. Maybe it would've been like Laurel and Hardy in Atoll K.

    Good story, Rick. But it's not a Fez. It's a Toque. Specifically a Togue Blanche (White Hat) for chef.

    Rick I enjoyed your presentation today- January 13,2022. I recall seeing Malice in the Palace back in the 70's. The deleted scenes with Curly , I saw the non-edited scene you mentioned . My asumption is the local network got hold of the orginal print before it was recalled by Columbia .
    Cheers 01/13/2022

    Since we are talking about film, "deleted" would not be the proper word. Edited out, taken out or even cut out (as in "on the cutting room floor"). One cannot delete anything from film... well, I suppose with X-ray or a magnet you could.

      They mostly just used the word "cut," (or edited) until there were other things than film.

    Too bad we never got a chance to see this scene. I also wish we could've had a Three Stooges episode with Curly and Shemp together!

    We used to watch the stooges on WSBK Boston, channel 38, home of the bruins prior to heading out on New Years Eve and then watching them again in the morning after new years .

    What a shame that they couldn't have done more with Curley in the Shemp era.

    They should've left the Curly scene in.They didn't know back then what a treasure that would've been for us stooge fans.I think Curly won our hearts with his antics.

    I've always been curious about this piece of Stooge last media and I think you're the first person I've heard that's actually mentioned the scene and how it was supposed to fit in the short.
