Spot on with the "emotional attachment." I have 73 "saves" as a USAF SAR pilot. Every one is very emotional. Good video!

John: hi. is that with drones or helicopter? Interested in drone "saves." Thanks.

Wow, amazing story. So sorry 2 hear the victim was found very late, my condolence 2 the family 4 their loss. My congrats 2 the SAR team on their effort 2 find the individual, & they did. The team could found the person if the team was involved earlier, not after 5 days has passed. Let this story b lesson learned that SAR w/ drone needs 2 b involved sooner, & not L8r. Thx 2 DroneU 4 sharing this amazing story on Utube.

Excellent video. Many thanks for posting. I've got 45 years in SAR and only recently looking at the potential for drones. So far, we have a number of anecdotal stories that drones can do good things. That's not in dispute. It's under what conditions, drone types, sensors, data analysis do they do good things. With what sensor for what conditions? As near as I can tell, and I'm pretty well connected to the US SAR community, there's no organized attempt to
compile this stuff. At a recent SAR/GIS conference, we discussed putting what's been learned so far together so I'll think about doing it. You've given us a couple of good people to start with... . PJ was great in honestly evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of using a drone on that SAR. A great contribution. Thanks.

Paul, how is it that every time I am looking for a very specific drone application question, you've already done a podcast on it? Awesome. This needs to be circulated broadly. Thanks again.

What mapping software was he using, or recommends, for Sar photo grids?

As a young man I did a hitch in the US Coast Guard. The first SAR mission I went out on turned into a recovery instead of a rescue. An "Old Salt" chief saw my face as I was standing at the rail and sidled up to me so the others couldn't hear and said "You can't save 'em all, but you always have to try" That stuck with me to this day. USCG motto is Semper Paratus, Always Prepared. Be prepared to do your best always and you'll have fewer regrets

Not only colormetric analysis but also morphometric analysis would be useful, example would be a body covered from a light snow fall or leaves to stay warm. And what would it take to have these images analysed in real time either on the drone itself (these are flying computers) or real time down loaded while the drone is in flight. If there is a suspected hit, then those areas can be more closely reinspected later.

I just saw this video for the first time today. Did you ever get to talk with Mr. Michaels?

Very happy to see this video produced. I would love to see a system where the computer picks out "un-natural". Sharp edges, colours, anything like that. I've been an air search observer and land search team member for 5+ years. Local SAR is rolling out a drone use more for vertical rescue and water rescue but this is a great step forward. Could we break down the fly over process further, was he using software to shoot the images/fly the pattern or was it manually done?

This was another thoughtful and informative video. It reinforces the notion that we're still innovators at drone operation regardless of our experience and expertise. This is still an industry in the pioneering phase. I'm looking forward to taking Drone U instruction courses. You guys seem to be the best situated, most informed, experienced and ultimately business oriented training courses I have seen so far

I supervise the UAS unit for my agency. We use drones for all types of missions to include a very active SAR team. I'd love more info on this program and how to get it. Thanks!

Those who accept failure and learn from it to implement that experience the next time, are the ones who are really successful!
Public Safety drone operation and training should be on the lines of USAF Drone Program, of course for Good, SOPs are important and should be shared among agencies!
AI may have helped with Scene Matching technology (how smart phone face unlock works) like the way he explained in the video!

For fun reading, you can research "open field" in relation to warrants and law enforcement. Ya'll were one better, with "probable cause" to believe there is a reason to go onto private property. It's SUPER important if it goes from suicide to homicide, as the body could be on the perpetrators property.

Thanks to PJ for sharing what I’ll consider a successful failure. This was all really good info for anyone who flies for emerg. services. Looking forward to ‘part 2’ of this discussion and learning more about this software. Thanks to Drone U also - really valuable knowledge sharing here.

Also, it is important to understand that the authorities have to ensure the safety of a search area before pulling in resources, especially volunteers. They have to gather the facts and details surrounding an emergency and then “secure the scene”. When a person goes missing, especially one who may be suicidal, they have to consider if that person is dangerous. What is their mental state, do they have a weapon, etc. Yes, deploying a drone to find such a person, getting some distance, not having a person in direct contact with the subject is an ideal use for a drone, but the authorities are also responsible for the operator’s safety in these type of missions, so steps need to be taken before they deploy... especially calling in non-department volunteers for assistance. They must ensure public safety after all. That includes you 🤓

Now with AI. Could you have run all these through one of those systems? So now instead of reviewing 3,000 photos you're only reviewing 300. With crime scene photos, there has to be enough of a data set you could train it on.
