Oh no, am I too old? Is it too late? Should I have done better? Did I lose the love I supposed to find along the way? When I imagine changing, I worry I'll feel the same, or even worse. I worry I'll end up some way I didn't want to when I was younger. Maybe I need pills to not feel this way, maybe I should listen to music, or go for a... nope. Feel the sorrow, as deeply as you can. Don't fight it, observe, and feel it fade. Thank you.

Loneliness is JUST A FEELING!!! It is not 10,000 Volts that are running through an overhead electrical wire that you have to touch! It will not kill you! Face IT!!! FEEL IT in your body!. ALLOW yourself to do it! Loneliness created in the past BY YOU, permeates your PSYCHE and the whole body, making it unpleasant when activated (thought/memory/current situation). But it will not KILL YOU...when you FACE IT. It seems hard, but it is not when we do it and have results! Just remember! Any form of justification or analysis (more thinking) will move it from the past to the future = more and bigger suffering! Be smart, be brave.. face it when it arises !!! Do not run away from it!

What does he mean by "modified"? " the past, meeting the present, modifies itself ". Can someone please give me an example of this?
Here is a little story for you: John felt lonely/rejected in the past as his extended family did not like his political views and abuse of alcohol. He was not invited to important family gatherings. He wanted to be appreciated and that nonacceptance caused him a lot of grief as he thought about all of that often. Today is John's birthday and only 2 people called him with good wishes. He sits alone in the bar finishing his 5th Johny Walker on the rocks.....
PAST rejections/loneliness was never faced HEAD ON (and DISSOLVED) by "John" and a ton of grief was created by his thinking about it. That feeling/emotion was stored in his psyche/body causing him PAIN. Like most people, he was running away from that feeling and for him, alcohol was the way to numb the feeling. Today (PRESENT) he adds (modifies) to all accumulated GRIEF by doing the same thing. (One can imagine what he is thinking about) What can we expect to happen to John in the future? Easy to guess...
When accumulated feelings from the PAST are faced by a human in the PRESENT and FINISHED (dissolved) there is no accumulation/no modification, hence no compulsion. We are FREE.
