I don't think there is a performance of this song which gets anywhere near this one, with its subtlety, honesty and lovingly cared ensemble work. Thank you a million times. I would love to have an album of yours dedicated to Josquin chansons, which I think are still waiting for an ideal album. How about it?
I agree. This is why Josquin's music was called "Ars Perfecta." There is a beautiful arrangement of Mille regretz for vihuela, titled "Cancíon del Emperador," by Luis de Narváez. [Je suis d'accord. C'est pourquoi la musique de Josquin s'appelait « Ars Perfecta ». Il existe un bel arrangement de Mille regretz pour vihuela, intitulé "Cancíon del Emperador", de Luis de Narváez.] [Google Translate]
The Phrygian mode makes this all the more sad, especially with what sounds like what should end with an A-major chord is actually an E-minor chord approached by a half step in the soprano.
In english : A thousand regrets for abandoning you And leaving your loving face I feel such painful sorrow and grief, That soon my days will be seen to be numbered.
Stunningly beautiful performance! Had never heard the tenor line so gorgeously ornamented as Jacob has sung it here, or the bass as Elam has. An absolute joy to listen to.
What a wonderful performance ! All voices sound so individual yet marry themselves so well with the others, enough to make it sound as a whole ; as One sound. The lyrics as well spoken for the poetry of it to take its meaning There's color, emotion, history, Music... On top of that, it gives the idea of what Josquin's life would have sounded like. In one word : Wonderful !
The way you expressed this song was so beautifully interpreted! All the feelings was there. You showed in this song how regretful you were. It is a gorgeous interpretation. I've never heard such a poignant performance. I don't think I could express myself as you did. Congratulations! I love it "mille" times.
Great performance. This might sound overdramatic, but I believe this piece to be one of the greatest of all time. Despite incredible simplicity, the construction is *perfect*. And of course it's unbelievably moving.
I love this so much! It's absolutely mesmerizing to watch you all communicate with each other as you sing! Also, the embellishment in the Tenor part is epic. Bravo!
I listened to your beautiful recording for the first time a month ago, and since then I have returned to this video many times to listen again. Bravo! Amazing and fascinating singing! It's not better to find! Thank you so much (:

Even with iPhone sound the phrasing, the tapestry of the lines, the richness and delicacy of vocal production the elegant precision of pitch- all of the makes this a performance to be cherished. 2 minutes of bliss which will resonate lingering for as long as you let it.
Its difficult to imagine more perfect, more harmonious rendition on any respect. Everything is an enchantment. You made a tremendous work to acheive such a marvel. Thousand Thanks for this pure beauty 🌹
A magnificent piece performed with great feel and competence. A genuine pleasure to here a piece performed so well. I have heard very little of his work but I did hear another of his works but sadly forgret its name. A lament of some type for the death of an important person. 👍 I found it, A Far Cry - Josquin Des Prez Nymphes des bois La deploration sur la mort de Johannes Ockeghem. arr Caroline Shaw.
Totally lovely! A fantastic piece by an outstanding composer from a marvelous quartet. Nice way of recording too (facing each other)! But what would Josquin say about the ornamentations...? 🤗 (Thinking of the tall tale about Josquin in Cambrai)
I’m currently studying Narvaez’s vihuela intabulation. Thank you for a performance of such depth and beauty. It’s like a guiding light as I make my way through the piece on my instrument.
Listening to this, I am struck by how similar you sound to early Tallis Scholars. The sonorities are brilliant without being overwhelming, the cadences are treated with utmost care. The music starts suddenly, without affectation, blends into a brilliant tapestry of sound without sounding homogenous, and then ends with a whisper, leaving the listener hanging... I wonder how you would fare with more elaborate vocal pieces - the Josquin masses in particular, or the Tudor variety.
Profetti della quinta : *add diminutions* Josquin Desprez *angry noises* : "you're donkey ..." 👀 Nah seriously, maybe the Best version of Mille Regrets ;)
I've been coming back to this almost everyday for the last months. Thank you, Elam Rotem. This served as inspiration to study more antique music along with your videos, since my studies as classic musician have almost no content on how to play music before 1700... This is something unique, we are very lucky.
Awesome and awesome ornementations ! Love it !! I had never heard ornementation on this loved piece and yours are very great. Your interpretation is very touching
I still considering finding out about this song to be one of the greatest highlights of my musical history education Thank you thank you thank you for keeping it alive
Dear Elam, I have a question burning in my brain and probably a question with different solutions: how about the penultimate note in discant: with alteration (#) or without alteration? (Is this alteration upwards # called diesis?) I noticed you decided to sing it without alteration. Is there a convention? I see in some intabulations with alteration, sung sometimes with alteration, sometimes without... I tend to dig to the solution with alteration because of my past time playing Narvaez's version on the guitar and later on the vihuela. Is there an explanation for both solutions? Also based on the contrapunctual context and etc? By the way, I came across this video some weeks after it was uploaded and also another one by Emma Roux and whenever I listen to you guys it always touch me. You did it really beautifully! Thanks for sharing! It is even more special after getting to know some of you in the ReRenaissance Festival in September 2023 and rewatching this :)
Lovely peace and thanks to @Raidenwave for including the original, French and English versions! Very curious: when it was 1st performed, were there 2 castrati singing with 2 male voices or was there possibly a female singer?
A thousand regrets at deserting you and leaving behind your loving face, I feel so much sadness and such painful distress, that it seems to me my days will soon dwindle away.
Guapísima, me encanta este tema, josquin is rise from his tomb, probably shot in his head after 10 minutes, or probably not, after earing you, congratulations ... gran canción!
As I listen to this amazing performance for the 1000th time I am thinking that I have hardly listened to an early-music ensemble that sings with your passion and attention to emotions conveyed by the music, lyrics, dynamics and so on (in addition to great intonation and timbres). A few weeks ago I attended a Tallis Scholars concert with mainly Desprez music and I felt that there was not that much in addition to the technical side (intonation etc.).
Without a joke, you are so skillful it's just outstanding! Beautiful voices, amazing recording and mastery. You made me listen to this kind of music for like 2 years now. I am big fan of Profeti della quinta. I think this is the peak of music.

Great idea, but someone probably has to raise money to pay them to do it.
@@mwnyc3976 why does that matter?
0:40 That tenor ornamentation, I keep on repeating it. Sounds so pleasing and hard to do
