@Ninsanity12 yet he was validated by the likes of shaq, was inducted into the hall of fame with shaq. Dude broke barriers for other asian players including the one you pick your screen name off of. Clown.
He was the right pick, best player in the 2002 draft. 2nd best in that class would be Amari Stodimire. It was a pretty weak draft with just a couple of All Stars. Houston made the right choice.
The number 2 was jay williams i aleardy know that you are to young to know him because william was the best player in college with duke and would had have a better career then yao for sure but he had a terrible career ending injury after is rookie season and was done after that
Even if Jay Williams becomes a star, Yao Ming is a better draft choice since you always pick the sure thing center over the sure thing guard as they are far rarer.
Doesn't matter, how good Jay William is. Money is the key and Center is always the priority. More than that, Yao proved himself that he is totally worth for 1st pick.
2002 nba draft only player stil playing is Nene lol...technically udonis haslem was undrafted from this draft but he didn't play in 02-03 his first season was 03-04 when he was signed so really the only guy left from this draft is Nene hilario who also didnt come over for 1 year from brazil
Two notes: 1. I dont really care about the booing. NBA fans arent in the position to judge picks, let alone run a basketball team. Its like watching a bunch of toddlers bitch about how theyre getting apple juice instead of soda. 2. NBA fans boo anytime they dont draft a black kid. History of every NBA draft.
Looking back to the earliest moment of Yao’s NBA career, it is obvious to tell all the efforts he made from both in&outside of the court. From a weak to strong, from silent to humorous, from skillful to more skillful, from non-English speaker to a fluently English-speaking, and most importantly, from a simple player to the sign of China and the bridge between Chinese and American culture!
man back in 2002 watching the draft as a rockets fan i was pissed. i was like " Why you didnt choose Jay Williams?! Damn it!" Six years later i grew on Yao Ming as at that point of his career he was MVP caliber.
HTDT did you look at his fg% 43% career for a legit 7 footer is terrible. also his advanced offensive and defensive rating are horrible. he has 2.5 win shares for his carreer is aweful.. even kwame brown has 20.
I'm a Chinese fan and I don't understand why were you guys booing when picked Yao? I don't want to take it as racist personally but it really seems so. In China this is so rude if you boo for 1st draft pick and shows no respect to the player. You can see Yao isn't happy at all as he heard that booing too. This is just so impolite and it's still happening when you American fans treat a non-black or oversea player get drafted, such as Porzingis, who is playing great now. So why did the boo? We Chinese fans want the answer for this for so long time.
Im Asian but not Chinese I’m Laos when I heard my dad speaking to me about like how good Yao Ming was and somebody in ROBLOX saying “YAO MING” I don’t get it why I watched this video and people saying “BOOOOO!!!!!!!” Like just give some respect for this 7’5 guy he’s very tall it’s like he does not need to jump to dunk and he’s the tallest player in nba history I believe but why don’t give respect for this Asian guy he’s just a a nba player who wanted to play in the U.S.A and your gonna hate Yao Ming for playing in the U.S.A that’s just wrong very rude to see people just being so rude to somebody that’s not Asian who ever booed the Yao Ming player you are rude and disrespectful to a Asian player who wanted to play in the U.S.A
韩爽 Honestly I don't think it is racism. What some people outside the US don't understand is that America has a very particular route for pro athletes that doesn't exist in other countries. If you are an athlete, it starts in high school playing for your local school. Then you get a sports scholarship to play for your college while you study. But unlike most youth leagues in other countries, these kids play on TV to millions of screaming fans, just like if they were pros. College players can be giant stars. Then they enter the professional league draft, and people who really follow the sport know them. Everyone is watching to see what college star is going to get the first draft pick. There was a feeling that Ming didn't "pay his dues" to get that coveted first pick because the fans didn't see the work he put in. That work wasn't done where they were watching, so they felt like the college stars were robbed of that #1 pick. Of course given a couple of years all of those people who boo'd became believers and came to see why he was the #1 draft pick.
i wouldnt say he was underrated i think people remember him more from his injuries which is a shame the guy was an 8 time all star and had a career 19.0 ppg.
Yao Ming is one of those players that is both overrated and underrated. He is overrated because of all those biased all-star selections from China. But he's underrated because people often leave him out of the conversation when they talk about the best centers in the 21st century. I think he is better than Dwight Howard(although D12 is a better defender and rebounder but lack offensive game while Yao is more all-round) Also he should've been in All-NBA 1st Team in 2007.
Then for the next 5 years, whenever an Asian in America would play a pick-up basketball game at the park or gym, everyone on the court would call that guy Yao Ming
I wasn't a basketball fan at this time but I'm curious to know how dominant he actually was. Hes in the hall of fame so I imagine he was great but he wasn't in the league that while because I started watching In 2011 or so .
When healthy, Yao was a fantastic player, but injuries due to his size completely ruined his career, as well as being on a Houston Rockets team that didn't have much going for it.
I am mixed who is quarter Caucasian, but Yao impacted many Asians in his time in the NBA. Multi All Star, MVP caliber, centerpiece of a franchise, and a #1 pick. It just may just take time when someone who looks like Yao becomes a number 1 draft pick.
All you people saying the fans are racist cause they booed, clearly you don’t watch the nba. European and players from overseas are a complete risk 80% of the time. NBA fans want the sure thing the kid from college they have seen on highlight tapes and has a lot of film. Of course they would boo a kid who they have never even heard his name up until a week before the draft
When I remember the series between Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets on 2005, I believe that the referee are suck to avoid Yao Ming to go to the semi-final.
@@spiderjerusalem4009 sigh...man just let those players perform themselves....I am not saying they are all good players, but everyone of them could be a future legend, so let them play first before boo >.
Oh come on guys, I don't think they were booing because of racism. They were just so excited about the 1st pick and when the name came out they just lost it expecting most probably an American to be drafted.
Not mostly on racism but if it is a player that is foreign, didn't go to college ( Muddiay probably wouldn't get booed if he went to Knicks since he was suppose to go to college), and if they never heard of him
+Ethan Giebmanns It's called xenophobia, it's another term for racism, it's still racist. I also noticed they don't boo when the foreign player is black, so definitely some racist prejudice involved here.
One of the best decision by Huston during that time period,Yao brought uncountable profit to Rockets plus he‘s a All-star level center.
