  • When Yao Ming entered the NBA in 2002, the hype and anticipation was through the roof. This 7'5" center with the support from a nation of over 1 billion people was a catalyst in causing the NBA to skyrocket in viewership during his rookie season. The first matchup between Yao and Shaquille O'Neal became one of the most watched regular season games in NBA history.

Imagine the great basketball we missed from some of those guys. Yeah I was built pretty thick and strong and probably would have been a top-five center of all time. @@fortynights1513 think it's just the way the muscles and tendon are tied to all of the bones from the hips on down to the length of the toes. I can't pretend that I'm medically educated but there's a build that you see on some of these guys that just doesn't hold up to the pounding that you get on the hardwoods. I'm sure there's medical papers on the way the muscle and ligaments of somebody that size differentiate from a well-muscled guy at 6 ft 4. The guys who were able to avoid injury had grown in spurts over the years and had once been talented athletes in other sports. Guys like Hakeem Olajuwon .They carry a lot more muscle and that seems to be the key unless you're somebody like Zion who has some bizarre muscular situation that actually works to his deficit. Wemby is going to be interesting to watch. If I just went on what my eyes were seeing I would have to say that there's going to be problems and problems pretty fast. There are those players who do not fit into the mold but even those guys end up getting hurt. I'm thinking of Kevin Durant specifically. For the sake of the league I hope I'm wrong. At least in this case.

Shaq publicly making fun of how Chinese people speak by mocking their language and saying "they should pass out fortune cookies to the fans" before a game involving Ming was racist. If a player made fun of black people and suggested fried chicken and watermelon be passed out to fans before a game, that player's career would be over. Ask Fuzzy Zoeller how that worked out for him. Racism against Asians got brushed over and swept under the rug back then. It wasn't funny then and still isn't today. Yao was a highly skilled player, honorable and carried himself with grace as a person and human. Asian hate unfortunately still exists today. Despite all that racist garbage that "wasn't" called out loudly enough back then, Shaq's strength, size and DURABILITY as a "player", who had racist tendencies, is still impressively dominant.

as someone of Chinese lineage, I'm glad there's that one Chinese guy who can be compared to one of the greatest. Kobe said that if Shaq had his work ethics he'd be the goat, and Yao Ming being able to earn Shaq's respect is to be respected (lol). I'm so sick and tired of all these Chinese folks who won't stop saying how the Asians are physically inferior to foreigners and can't compete physically. If you get rid of all that academic pressure, let kids fool around and be kids, and as parents, show up to games, they'd play better.
personal experience man, played on an all Asian team, everyone were in universities and didn't have much time to ball. When we played friendlies, against black and white and Middle Eastern folks, one look at the bench will tell you everything. We had 2 siblings on our side, and their benches would be packed. No wonder Asian kids gave up on bball. No encouragement from parents will get you that. I'll stop here before I write an entire thesis on Asian education's downsides.

4:46 you hit the nail on the head here. Shaq is a very jealous person. He often mistakes feeling disrespected for when he actually feels jealous. Or he just doesn’t want to admit he feels jealous. Because if he’s jealous, then he’s the bad guy. But if someone disrespects him, then they’re the bad guy.

Once shaq started using force it was over. But as a Shaq fan I can say he gave shaq a bit of a challenge Because of his height and perimeter shooting abilities. And one of a few players shaq respected. Yao was on his way to be one of the great all-time centers if it wasn’t for Injuries.

Hakeem was better than Shaq, he just wasn't as flashy with dunks. If that wasn't true then Shaq would have 1-2 more rings. Shaq didn't get rings until he had Kobe and Phil Jackson coaching.
Also the main juxtraposition between Yao and Shaq was that Yao was one of the best free throw shooters in nba history, not just for a center. With Shaq being one of the defacto worst.
