To be honest that comic came out in a era when LEGO lost it's identity and the comic shows pretty much that. Disney-esc characters and backgrounds while vehicles are LEGO so as some details. The proportion scales are off. The art style doesn't know wtf it wants to be and that isn't a smart selling point. They should stick to being LEGO if they are just that. I'd love for LEGO to give Time Travel another shot for a theme, there's so much you could do! Each wave or year could be a different- well, year. Dinosaurs, the future, tons of historical eras, it sounds perfect! They did have a set from Master Builder Academy - the Invention Designer-with a steampunk time traveling machine, complete with a "Ripcord" to spin the cockpit of the ship around. There's two other themes currently with a time travel-element I don't wanna mention for fear of spoilers... but it's a shame this will probably not see a resurgence any time soon, unless it's another licensed theme like Doctor Who or Bill and Ted. Just saw the leak for the new Dreamzzz minifigures & it reminded me of this episode of the show, so I’m rewatching it to prepare for that theme’s launch.
Still have a second unopened Timecruisers HQ behind my clothing basket that my aunt gave me just at that time you grew out of playing with lego. Man was that set fascinating to play with as a child. Those orange mirrors tho. Changed it into a clone troopers base when it that phase began.
Hey Nick, I stop playing with Lego in 84 when i found dirt bikes, in 2010 i came out of the dack ages and found this theme in a Lego book and went hunting, found a few used but tidy set down here in New Zealand and i love it, thanks for your great work.
I had the Hypno Cruiser (car) and the Rocket Racer (little vehicle with tim in it) when I was young. I was really into back to the future at the moment, so having time traveling lego sets was the dream for me back then.
I thought this was going to be a boring episode, just because of how few sets there were, but it turned out to be one of the best! That comic art is so good
Honestly, LEGO really should start making more lines where they just use the leftover pieces of the previous year's sets. Would be interesting to see the outcome.
The Time Cruisers and Time Twisters were my favourite sets as a kid, I had the big Time Cruisers sets and the Time twister Train. Its crazy that I didn't know this deepr detail.
they reference clutch powers in one episode so there would be a possible crazy multiverse theory if you can backtrack from the themes referenced in that.
The Serpentine War in Ninjago only happened 40 years ago. The technological boom that's happened since then was *crazy* fast. This is the perfect explanation.
LEGO Rewind is awesome!! I remember when these Time cruiser/Time twister sets came out and remember how weird I thought they were even when I was 8, that allure and time travel, must be why I ended up getting most of them! I’m going to have to find the parts and try to rebuild some of these!! LEGO should try another original time travel theme!!
Those comics show exactly how my best friend and I would play with LEGO, we’d mix ALL themes we had available together to make one interconnected universe. It’s hard to do that when so many themes are licensed, ends up looking like Kingdom Hearts with all the stuff owned by Disney.
Oh wow, this actually looks like a spiritual precursor to the Lego Movie. Its MOC-like sets, its trip through various contemporary Lego themes, and its world where all these themes coexist Scratch that, I'm *certain* this was the start of the Lego movie and it just took them a few decades to refine. Tim's true successor is Emmet.
Love these videos so much. Whatever music/audio tones you use for the intro has just the right warm mellow analog-ness that takes me right back to a cozy place in my childhood; the perfect headspace for enjoying LEGO Rewind. Glad to see the deep dive into the Time Cruiser Klick comics; those were a great piece of LEGO media that really only resurfaced online in the past 4-5 years. There was a fantastic group of folks over on Rock Raiders United that translated a good chunk of them. There's a set of three German audio dramas that add additional backstory and craziness to the theme, believe it or not. I was around and online when Time Cruisers was still on the shelves, and the AFOLs *hated* it, so much that it became a bit of a running joke. It was funny to see that in this video Tim sounds like a rare and forgotten character because at the time his omnipresence was a sore point among users on the now-ancient LEGO newsgroups like rec.toys.lego. (This was probably overblown, but he did pop up in many of the Freestyle sets during and after the TimeCruiser hayday. But I've always had a soft spot for its attempt to unify the existing themes and wish Time Twisters had gotten more attention than it has.
I usually know most of the stuff you mention on your rewind videos, but this time I definitely learned something new. I never knew time cruisers originated from a comic book. Also I always had a feeling lego had a surplus of parts and then just made this theme to make sets out of them
Thank you so much for covering this theme Nick. I wanted to ask you to cover this theme for a while, but once I bingewatched all your videos, I found out that doing so would de-motivate you in actually making this video. Somehow, despite having more than approximately 100 Star Wars sets this is still my all-time favourite theme. I love that you put so much time in showing the comic. Without you, I would have never known about it! Made my day man.. cheers buddy!
I'm a Bionicle guy to the core, and I didn't grow up with Time Cruisers myself, but this genuinely would have been the perfect theme for that anniversary set from Lego Ideas. * sigh * Maybe for the 100th anniversary... 🙄
Seriously, imagine they revitalized it for one last set with a bit of a gritty steampunk - meets - late 80s - early 90s aesthetic... and with settings that pay homage to several of the themes included in the first vote, maybe even some nods to newer themes like Friends, Ninjago, and The Lego Movie too. Would have been a perfect celebration of Lego's legacy - something none of the other options could ever really capture wholly - and it would have a little something for everyone.
@@TheiBunny I just think it was dumb to restrict it to one set. All that does is pit different sects of the lego community against each other. They should've done 3-5 sets, just a small line celebrating different classic themes, maybe with something like Time Cruisers tying it together as a story.
@@NickonPlanetRipple I agree. I wouldn't be surprised if Lego turned around and said, "you know what, you're getting sets for all 4 of the top themes in 2022!" I think it'd be really nice to have a legacy line like what Ninjago does, but spanning all of Lego's back-catalogue. Wouldn't need to oversaturate their releases with it, maybe 2 or 3 sets a year in the same vein as the recent Barracuda Bay, Medieval Blacksmith and Benny's Spaceship sets, each for a different theme... In fact, given we've gotten those sets, and are getting at least one more like it next year, maybe this is the start of something like that actually happening...
I'm so excited for this season, having binged the first two. It's such a cool thing seeing all of these older LEGO themes analysed (even though some episodes made me feel jealous of children who got to experience them while my options are limited). I'm pretty sure I'll be blown away by some other themes I haven't even heard of!
A surprising amount of the strange parts are based on more obscure parts of themes' lore that never made it to the U.S. (The comic was in German originally I believe), the fright knights warring with ufo being the first thing off the top of my head
Yeah there was a commercial which featured the UFO and Fright Knights fighting each other. The thing about making Basil the good guy and making Willa the enemy was how the Fright Knights were marketed in Germany and the rest of Europe while the US they were marketed as making Basil and Willa villains and both on the same side. Though the Knights Kingdom 1 chapter could've been better. Not only does Cedric look unfaithful to his minifig but they could've portrayed him better and made him more reasonable with Tim instead of just immediately assuming he's a spy for King Leo and chucking the kid in the catapult and as Nick quoted ''a carnage loving maniac'' Because reasons explained back in episode 26.
I haven't paid much attention to the Dreamzzz sets, but some of them are giving me a bit of the "blend things together that absolutely should not be blended together MOC" energy that this theme does.
I just bought four sets after a night shift I I didn't even remember so I was very surprised when I got a reminder on Ebey. I foremost remember the train. The way it had three separate themes mashed into one set was stunning to me. I vaguely remember building my own back in my Lego prime. I am looking forward to building those four sets but mostly I want to mash modern themes into a new train. This is what mostly interested me in that series, the idea of mashing different themes together and it totally works. FYI: I don't care about the backstory because as a kid the sets always inspired me to create my own story.
This is my first time learning about this theme but now I seriously want a reboot just so I can have access to this universe. The whole premise looks so fun.
Oh man I had the Time Twister train but I had no idea what Lego line it was from. It was a fun set. I also had a random Tim minifig probably from another set but I think he had a different colored hat. I had no idea the Time Twister/Time Cruiser plot, but I recall using the Time Twister mustache guy as a villain for Johnny Thunder to have gunfights with.
Man, we need to see a new LEGO cross-series canon again. LEGO did half-heartedly try to briefly link Ninjago with other intellectual properties under its roof (via Max's Adventures and in-series), but I feel they could've been better utilized. I'd love to see just _how_ Invizable (invisible man from Ultra Agents, infamous tan-fedora toting crook) became a good guy among the Elemental Masters, along with why Toxikita is part of the NInjago canon, a brief explanation as to why Chima is part of the Ninjago realms, and their brief mention of Clutch Powers (season 1, episode 9, The Royal Blacksmiths) gives me a faint, flickering wish that they'll somehow resurrect these themes out of the old brick box. I've even been thinking about a show idea that revives the Johnny Thunder franchise while questioning a lot of the stuff Hollywood archaeologists do (let's face it, most of the time they wind up becoming glorified graverobbers if they're not fighting the supernatural). (And probably the Dino theme getting a soft revival should anything happen to the Jurassic Park IP, just so we can have Johnny meet his descendant, Josh. Like Joestars and fighting, seems dino-caretaking runs in the Thunder bloodline...)
Something I discovered on Brickipedia recently says that, according to the writer of the original comics, Dr. Cyber is Timmy's uncle and apparently, Professor Millennium and Tony Twister were alternatively named "Commode Schmidt" and "Baron Blomberg" respectively.
Just impulse bought the Twisted Time Train after seeing it on screen. Got a great deal and I'm a little nervous to jump into classic collecting, but it just looked like something I couldn't pass up. Great way to collect different themes at once and get a great build in its own right at the same time!
Once upon a time, kid me desperately wanted a lego ship for christmas. The pirate ship or preferably the shiny navy ship. And I got the time cruiser. Not exactly what I expected, especially because I wasn't even aware of the theme.
Yeah, me too! I never bought any of the sets, but the aesthetic is so wacky and creative that I would love to see Lego make a revival of this theme soon. They haven't done much of anything non-licensed that's time travel related since Ninjago's 7th wave, and I would love to see more creative time travel stuff like this from Lego.
woah i remember time cruisers i never knew about the comic there are so many lego themes in place like Fright knights, king leos kingdom, aqua sharks, lego tow, lego west theme and the adventurers theme i grew up when these sets were out on shelves now i remember lego studios
5:29. I looked up the comic and apparently, the reason the Xtreme Team was there was that Dr. Cyber upgraded their vehicles to travel through time. i.imgur.com/FZc7H93.jpg The Insectoids existing on the water planet that Aquazone takes place on wasn't explained, though. Still, an awesome comic from a really underrated Lego theme.
Lines like these, despite not growing up with them Instills a sense of nostalgia because they have a more unique and creative aesthetic compared to today’s aesthetics
So... there exists a comic book that has expounds on 90's Lego themes lore? That's literally my childhood dream, I spent hundreds of hours looking on the catalogue pages and imagining all the stories happening in these weird worlds.
Was the time machine teaser at the end of the 1994 Lego catalogue a teaser for this theme? I somehow overlooked that as a kid and didn't know the kid had a connection with the fiendish Max Timebuster that appeared around the time.
I wish they'd bring back these older original themes and also think of all I could do if I were to travel through time, but I'm leaving rejections alone and would instead change other aspects of my high school years to make it more enjoyable for me.
So Nick, I thought a little bit about how you could even do something like the comic series about 'Modern' Day Lego: You'd have to really focus on sets from 2005-2012. Essentially, you'd have to group a lot of themes together. You could group Mars Mission, Space Police III, Alien Conquest since they're all space themes. For fantasy themes, you could use the 2007 Castle sets or the modern castle sets; personally either works. Pirates could go in as well, maybe the 2009 sets. Alpha Team would be a good pick for something like that as well. Exo Force would be incredible for this. If you need an underwater theme, 2007 Aqua Raiders would work. Atlantis and Pharaoh's Quest would be good picks too. Power Miners fits right in.If you wanted to, you could use the first wave of Ninjago since that wave is mostly disconnected from Ninjago's continuity as a story. Of course, the problem is that these sets are all from right before what I would say the 'modern' era of Lego is. Looking back at old lego catalogues, you see that after 2012 there is a huge shift in the style and design of modern sets. Ultra Agents sets look very different from Agents sets; Galaxy Squad makes Alien Conquest look childish by comparison. Ninjago has really grown to become Lego's big cashcow. Nexo Knights is fun, but it was somewhat doomed by the 2.5 wave line lineup. The aesthetics didn't work. A lot of newer lego themes are really smooth, polished and great sets, but it feels like the quality of the sets often times means there are far fewer new IPs. And sadly, even if the Galaxy Squad sets were great, there was nothing to draw readers in. No game like Mars Mission, no lore dumping and movie like Bionicle, no bold aesthetics and TV show like Atlantis. It's such a shame that such great themes just get shelved so fast. Galaxy Squad is such a pretty and fun line, but it never had a chance. I don't know if I say the modern era of lego is even 'bad' compared to the pre-2000's lego sets, but I do think that there is a big difference. Pieces got smaller and builds got more detailed but smaller as a result. Prices go up but quality arguably goes up. Original IPs come out fewer and far between but they often have beautiful builds and design. Ninjago is Lego's non-licensed Star Wars; most themes almost seem to work in Ninjago's shadow. Of course, aside from the Lego Movies and Ninjago, City and Star Wars rule the aisles. It's a departure, but one that must make Lego enough money to keep going. Keep up the great work, Nick!
@@NickonPlanetRipple Ah, I wasn't suggesting that you make another comic series; It was a thought as to how something like the Time Cruisers comic could work with modern day Lego!
Yeah this looked like like an interesting bizarre theme but kinda it’s charm and love time travel stories so and interesting backstory always neat to hear those ( and btw I’ve been reading planet ripple vol. 1 not bad I’m enjoying it and love your unique art;)
I just remembered, the story was featured in one of the Lego Mania magazine issues where they said that Dr. Cyber had disappeared after experimenting with the Hypno-Disc, and Timmy, the monkey, and Cranky the robot set out to find him, where they came across the Time Twisters, who were the ones who kidnapped him and went off to warp time to their whims. Also, I think the Time Twisters showed up in a couple of Lego Mania magazines, but I don't remember where.

That comic art is so good
I think I remember hearing that this theme was inspired by Back To The Future. The time-traveling car and train definitely were, at least.
Thank you soo much for including this in the rewind. I've been waiting for eons to see an in-depth analysis of time cruisers.
I had a Time Cruisers phase last year when I collected all the sets, regret selling them all on ebay after watching this!
6:30 - I kinda want this to be the backstory for Ninjago.
they reference clutch powers in one episode so there would be a possible crazy multiverse theory if you can backtrack from the themes referenced in that.
YES
I don't know why, but the V-Sauce joke always gets a chuckle out of me whenever I rewatch this episode.
Oh wow, this actually looks like a spiritual precursor to the Lego Movie. Its MOC-like sets, its trip through various contemporary Lego themes, and its world where all these themes coexist
Scratch that, I'm *certain* this was the start of the Lego movie and it just took them a few decades to refine. Tim's true successor is Emmet.
Wow! This episode told me how I underestimated this theme... it was so much more then I thought!
Thank you for being so considerate! I just hope I didn't take TOO long getting around to this theme.
I'm a Bionicle guy to the core, and I didn't grow up with Time Cruisers myself, but this genuinely would have been the perfect theme for that anniversary set from Lego Ideas.
* sigh *
Maybe for the 100th anniversary...
I wouldn't be surprised if Lego turned around and said, "you know what, you're getting sets for all 4 of the top themes in 2022!"
I think it'd be really nice to have a legacy line like what Ninjago does, but spanning all of Lego's back-catalogue.
Lego rewind is the one thing that keeps me going
This stuff is brilliant, please keep up your Lego work it's great. Thanks for all your work.
Had one of these but never knew there was any story or lore behind it. Parents got it for me cause it was a funky looking set.
keep up the amazing work I love being able to relive my childhood through all your videos!!!
This was my favourite set as a kid, i never had it but it was always the first thing I looked at in my old lego magazine.
Probably the bright colours.
In an alternate universe...
The time cruisers crosses over with ninjago
I think the best of the line is the nasty space boat
Once upon a time, kid me desperately wanted a lego ship for christmas. The pirate ship or preferably the shiny navy ship. And I got the time cruiser. Not exactly what I expected, especially because I wasn't even aware of the theme.
I wish something like Time Cruisers would come along today. It really dosen't have a spiritual sucessor.
This is amazing! I had no idea about this entire comic series! Thanks!
Great Scott!
woah i remember time cruisers i never knew about the comic there are so many lego themes in place like Fright knights, king leos kingdom, aqua sharks, lego tow, lego west theme and the adventurers theme i grew up when these sets were out on shelves now i remember lego studios
The comic was only released in Germany so it's understandable you never heard about it at the time.
Never knew about this line but I did end up with the kid in a barebones "here's a box of lego" kit containing mostly lego bricks
I never knew this existed as a kid. Super cool.
Lines like these, despite not growing up with them Instills a sense of nostalgia because they have a more unique and creative aesthetic compared to today’s aesthetics
I never knew about this theme, now I know where the sky cruiser ride at Legoland comes from.
Excellent work.
So... there exists a comic book that has expounds on 90's Lego themes lore? That's literally my childhood dream, I spent hundreds of hours looking on the catalogue pages and imagining all the stories happening in these weird worlds.
Was the time machine teaser at the end of the 1994 Lego catalogue a teaser for this theme? I somehow overlooked that as a kid and didn't know the kid had a connection with the fiendish Max Timebuster that appeared around the time.
You have unlocked hidden memories :O
Does anyone know the name of the blue cyborg lady ?
I just do't have time to do such a comic series.
@@NickonPlanetRipple Ah, I wasn't suggesting that you make another comic series; It was a thought as to how something like the Time Cruisers comic could work with modern day Lego!
I really felt like they should have had the mixed up theme for the time machines, but added a set or two alluding to the normal waves.

*you just can't ever please anyone now a days can you?*
Oh wow! I was wondering why my video had a comment surge, thanks for the shout out.
No prob!
If I look at almost any classic lego line I get a super warm nostalgic feeling. When I look at this I still think it sucks.
Eh.
Those sets were so weird, I know nobody, who actually bought them. Interesting to know that there is so much backstory though (and a fun one at that!)
Yeah this looked like like an interesting bizarre theme but kinda it’s charm and love time travel stories so and interesting backstory always neat to hear those ( and btw I’ve been reading planet ripple vol. 1 not bad I’m enjoying it and love your unique art;)
With Lego's original theme nowadays, I could see a mini cinematic universe being a thing.
Good choice in music.
It was sufficiently zany for my purposes.
It would be great to uncover some scans of that before the season's over.
@@NickonPlanetRipple I think you can find them on Miniland.nl. They've got scans of a lot of different magazines like Lego Mania, a few Brick Kicks, some Lego Magazine, and I think even a few older ones, too.
@@Autisticguywithacamera Well damn... I've scoured the website, as many magazine scans as I could load up, and couldn't find any such thing.
@@NickonPlanetRipple Weird, I thought it was on that site. It must have been a different website, then. Sorry.
@@Autisticguywithacamera Tis okay. It's just something I'd like to mention in the S3 recap episode, but I'm not sure I could if I can't verify it with scans.
amazing video! keep up the great work! 👍
I only had one of the sets as a kid but now I wish I had more of them.
Weardly enough, it is one of my favorite themes
I miss when lego had its own characters, its own stories, its own universe kind of, really miss those times.
Retrieving a cookie recipe tut sat,
DOPE.
You should make a video showing us your old lego collection
There arme three audioplays from this theme in Germany. The cassettes were in three of the sets.
I've been waiting for this.
I'm gona buy planet ripple in a few days
The way you pronounced Timebuster remined me of Starkid's Time Bastard
Those comics look pretty cool I have to admit.
Sadly I Don't think we'll ever see anything like this again, maybe hidden side is the closest we'll get 😶
Fascinating. this is a very unusual time\series.
Man i really wish lego would make more themes like time cruisers instead just putting license themes and nothing else
Just bought the Flybo set. Great theme.
Does the woman at 4:28 in the bottom frame just not wear any jeans other than some sort of super hero like custome? I'm surprised Lego was willing to do that.
