@@gaminggranny1541 i remember trying to make the original dragon by Adding the Zekrom i made, but could never make it work so i settled on just Kyurem-White
I think the "rambling" is important, as it demonstrates what sets the Crystal Crawler above the rest of the pack, and goes into what makes combination models in general so cool, but also how even professional set designers can struggle under these limitations, and how hard it can be to make something cool, unique, and functional with one.
Man, as a kid I got myself the Mine Mech as my only Power Miners set, because I assumed it was like, the head honcho of the entire line (partially because it was in the Clutch Powers movie and partially because, it was a bloody huge robot) but now Im realising it was the second smallest set.
that feeling of like "why am I put these functional or bright pieces in a place where they can't be used or seen" is such a feeling I get when making creator 3 in 1s
Yep, that, and more, is one of the good thing to know for future, when making custom builds with specific toy brick sets. And man, I LOVE Lego Creator - rebuilding as much sets into alternative builds as possible can taught some things for general Lego building
So glad you went into the more goofy Bionicle combiners. Theme simultaneously had some of the sickest fucking things like Vezon & Kardas (I will forever have envy for anyone that actually owns that set) and then absolute manmade horrors beyond my comprehension like the Krahka just to try and fit 6 sets worth of pieces together.
@@BigYellowSilly The fact that almost all the combiners are cannon I think is the icing on the cake. The Visorak combiners are very fucked up and definitely should not be in the Bible. Adds a lot to the theme though for sure, and the good ones are stupidly good.
@@princesscunk Considering the fucked up shit that's already in the Bible, no, no, they should absolutely be in. ...and now the phrase "biblically accurate bonkles" is stuck in my head.
Kardas doesn't contain any pieces that aren't included in the three individual sets it's built out of (Axonn, Brutaka, and Vezon&Fenrakk), so if you get the three titans separately you can show off the model a lot easier. ...But if you want the official printed Kardas instructions then be ready for some pain.
I used to do Legos as a kid, and I think I fell more into the "alter existing sets myself" style. My favorite thing to do was to take a set and add on to it by making improvements. For example, the first Titanium Mech set from Ninjago (featured the four-armed Ghost mech as well) didn't have bending elbows, so I took the arms apart and remade them to have elbows. Then with the Lego Speed Champions McClaren Senna set, I added a couple of pieces to the interior for a speedometer.
It's really fun doing that. The best part is when you do such a good job altering the set that you forget it's not the base version after a while, and then when you revert it back to its original it starts looking weird and unfinished 😂
I have very fond memories of shoving a dozen bionicles together and proudly taking a dozen photos on the DSI camera and every time a photo of him appeared on the top screen of the DSI menu I would pop off. Kinda sweet actually also i saw Speeda Demon in this video and he's so fucking cool he's a bionicle with a motorbike look him up
I’m absolutely here for all the Rock Raiders love! ❤️😉 Power Miners is absolutely noteworthy in their promotion of alternate builds and combiner models during an era where that simply wasn’t the norm. The Crystal Crawler has always been an idol of mine and you do it such justice here! Thanks so much! I really can't recommend that alt for the Granite Grinder enough, the second I got the footage of the awful official one I instantly rebuilt it into the modified one, fanmade alts are something I'd love to see more of!
one of my favourite themes for combination models was mixels, it’s got lost in the shuffle since it ended, but there were a whole bunch of little dudes that were very affordable, and the fiction very much encouraged mixing the parts together in your own ways. there were official combos, but just about any pair of mixels could make something really weird or interesting. the parts were somewhat limited, but there were enough joints and hinges and parts for making faces that you could pretty much always make a satisfying little toy, and the individual sets were simple enough that when you wanted to put them back together it’d take like maybe five minutes per guy. such a fun theme, just really brimming with life and creativity.
As a kid, I was big into the Dino Attack series which had a combination build of the fire hammer and the iron predator to create this cool half track. I could never find the instructions as a kid, but I bought an extra of each in case I ever did. Somewhat recently someone uploaded a build video on it and I was finally able to put my very own together

As a kid i used my brothers random harry potter and star wars lego to make GLaDOS and olimars ship from pikmin , bith made pretty accurately. The ship could even take off parts to be in a broken state like the game. Fun video btw
Always a good day to see a new big yellow video, sometimes it’s about lego, sometimes some random fighting game character or mechanic, or sometimes it’s about how gen 1 Pokémon fails to not bug out… but every time it’s a 15-40 minute video that’s whole vibe is “here is the random ass thing about something you more then likely haven’t thought about or care about but I’m gonna tell you why it’s coolest shit ever”… and damnit I’m on board :)
I actually really enjoy your lego videos and wouldn't mind more of them. I used to collect all the bionicle sets, so these videos are a nostalgia bomb for me, and I love it.
I was definitely a "build the model, play with it for a while, then if I liked it enough as-is I'd keep it around or maybe modify it slightly, and otherwise take it apart" kinda lego kid. I also loved the heck out of Bionicle combination builds. To the best of my memory I *never* took apart my Shadowed One after I built him, in part because, at the time, I thought the dark hunters were the coolest thing EVER (I was 11, don't @ me). Point being, this video was made for me and I always have a great time when you talk about lego :).
I had the underground mining station when I was younger, and this video absolutely awakened some kind of sleeper agent shit in me. I'd forgotten that entirely! Cool video - your enthusiasm is as infectious as ever.
this video RULES dude!! you make such awesome content. combining sets was my favorite as a kid, i had NO idea that was a thing which was official in any capacity! i man so many eldritch bionicles...
How you managed to get me to sit down for 40 minutes and watch a video on a topic I'd never heard of nor cared about is absolutely wild to me. Genuinely insane how you're able to consistently keep doing this. Great stuff.
How do you make just rambling about legos so interesting? I swear, I was captivated every second of this video, and it really was just you rambling about legos! Amazing video, I'd sub to you again if I wasn't already.
Hot take: I really like the RRR. I like that the Power Miners crew have a vehicle that's just a truck modified to clear rubble and find people, that isn't a massive piece of mining equipment. ...is it worth buying the station? No, part it out, but I like it, and it's inspiring to make like, idk, a small tanker truck designed as a sprayer to get rock dust out of the air.
You made me want to build this model again. What's cool about it, it doesn't have a janky, half-baked shape, but instead there was some idea behind it and is kinda stylised like a scorpion.
I love your lego videos so much, I haven't actually had any legos since I was a young kid where notably I never had any sets whatsoever, only the loose bucket lego to play with, so it's just fascinating learning the kinds of things lego sets get up to
I unironicly see your channel not as the channel that 'sometimes' posts Lego Power Miners videos but as THE Lego Power Miners channel. I don't know how or what else you could talk about but am all here for the Lego Power Miners videos. I listen to them as I paint warhammer.
this reminds me of these little Lego race cars I had as a kid, they were a collection of four and each of them paired with one of the others to make a bigger combination truck, and the coolest part of them was that the instruction manual for each car came with half of the instructions for its combination truck while the pair for it came with the other half, as kind of a teaser for what you could make if you got the other car too. I also remember each of the cars came with a different type of glow-in-the-dark piece, the glow-in-the-dark sticks that came with the red one are still one of my favorite Lego pieces but I lost one of them
The joy of combo models is that they remind us of where we came from: when we were little and just had a couple of sets, we could do so much with so little. It was our training camp, a learning experience. Then, seeing Lego do the same, pushing to use our imagination with just two simple sets, that pushed us to give it a try. As the years went by, the amount of sets owned grew exponentially and so did the pieces used for MOC's. However, after some time, I found it more appealing and more challenging to force myself into building something with just a bunch of sets. It's just easier to throw as many pieces as you can get. On the other hand, going back to basics, where we all started, but with so much more experience, that's where the real fun is, imho. I love the Kardas dragon from Bionicle, I could already do something bigger and better when I was 10 years old. However, I'm more proud of smaller achievements, that made me use those pieces in newer ways.
Glad that you used the power miners animations that I found few years ago, as a Power Miners fan I share your opinion about the Crystal Crawler, its just EPIC!
Great stuff, these combo models were the coolest thing when I was growing up. Bionicle and power miners were my two biggest Lego addictions by far. I should give this one a shot, I always wanted to back them.
10:00 that bionicle looks like that meme image of a guy in marti gras mask in his bedroom, squatting, while holding two zweihanders. "does this look like the kit of mercy?"
Hey, I know this is completely unrelated to the video, but I recently had a dream that you made a video on fishing. You also showed how to find the best worms for using as bait. You ended up feeding a massive carp and an even bigger catfish, and then made a follow up video that you ended up with a really nasty cold, because you would go too deep into the water for fish feeding and got hypothermia. Yeah I don't even know where this came from, but I thought I'd share it. No japes btw, really had such dream.
The discussion on Lucas Valor took me back. I was reading the Lego magazine at the time, and I remember that issue. That was such a weird concept for a build, and I'm glad to be reminded of it.
I actually really like that aero shredder. The little dynamite catapult bolted onto the side of the vehicle gives off a really ad-hoc vibe, like the power miner quickly created that as a weapon for their otherwise defenseless construction vehicle
This reminds me of when I was younger, and followed these fan made instructions to build an AT-AT with some cannon on the back (I think it's canon in star wars, idk) by combining two AT-ST's, after I had gotten one for my birthday after I already had that set. It became one of my favorite things in my lego collection. Combination models and alternate builds are so fun.
crazy how you can just make a video on literally any little niche interest you have and get me hooked. Amazing video and have really been enjoying the channel :]
I actually really like the idea of large combination sets leaving a bit of pieces for you to make your own side build. They give you a nice big model to stimulate your creativity, then leave you with a smaller pile of parts to tempt you
very swag vid! i always remember seeing these in the instruction booklets but never had the chance to make one. however, i thrived with those 3-in-1 sets; their diverse parts usually gave my kid brain the inspiration to somehow repurpose the handful of hinge pieces into a mech. (as a completely unrelated side note, your nails are very pretty and it inspired me to actually do mine again after not doing it for a hot minute :3 )
your videos are well written enough and on interesting enough topics that you can be off topic for most of a video and still have it be interesting content, great job!
I never was personally into Hero Factory, but from what I've seen, it doesn't look bad in my opinion. It looks like a cool constraction line, truthfully
Gracious, preeetty sure I made those -Slizers- Throwbot combos; at the least, that second one's big ol' eggy head is tactly familiar. Really need to dig out the Technic-pieced models I've kept around for a photoshoot~
As someone who does not have a whole lot of knowledge of the Lego community, the concept of 'illegal' builds is interesting. Would definitely watch a video on those, though I don't know if there are enough to cover
This was a trip down memory lane. I loved Power Miners so such back in the day (still do today) and I was always building the combinations models and then the original models again and back and forth. The Cave Cutter was favourite out of the combination models, Although that was the only one I could build for the longest time. Also I remembered being so afraid of building the other combo models since they had so many pieces and they would take so long. Also a theme I remember having cool combo models were Mixels. Because the animated shorts had the characters mixing themselves together. And hearing what you're saying about dodgy combo models, It find it funny since they've implemented that idea into the Mixels shorts. If the Mixels screw up a mix, the end result is an abomination called a Murp. (example: www.lego.com/cdn/product-assets/product.bi.additional.extra.pdf/41505_X_Shuff%20%2B%20Zaptor.pdf ) But It was it cool since you could make your own kooky characters and mix the existing mixels together. But yeah, vibeo really good :)
8:15 I nearly choked on my supper As someone who recently tried to rebuild every Exo Force Robot Battle Suit in Studio, that comment on some alternate model instructions being lost media hits hard. A lot of 'em were ridiculously hard to find
I totally forgot about the Power Miners alt builds, but I know I built them all as a kid (at least the first wave ones). The Crystal Crawler was definitely my favorite, but I loved the original sets more so that’s how the pieces have stayed for a decade. I have a ton of extra Power Miners parts now so I might try to make a new one to go along with the rest of my crew! Also, I like to think the Crystal Crawler is the unofficial 13th vehicle. We need some custom stickers for it lol Edit: holy crap I even have an extra big bucket. This is so happening
I fully agree on the Crystal Crawler being the best Combination Model, and i have future plans to buy the two sets to make it, and i have made an idea for it that would add a reactor type thing and another thing to make the wheels wider
Mixels comes to mind to me when I hear the word “combo model.” The mixes, maxes, and murps are so goofy and funny at times, and sometimes are pretty sick. Personal favorite max is the MCFD Max from Series 8, where it transforms into a fire truck. Overall, Mixels is just one hell of a fun LEGO theme with combo models related to it.
@16:30 the instructions on the rubble dozer car actually show that they only call for the stickered element on one side. There is a stickered 1x4 flat plate on the visible side and 2 1x2 flat plates are used on the nin-visible side.
Yeah I kinda worded that wrong, it's not that they're asking you for two of the same stickered 1x4, but that they want you to place a second non-existent sticker over two 1x2 tiles
I wonder if LEGO made combo models that left out a bunch of pieces from their component sets for the reason you mentioned with the crystal crawler. By leaving pieces out of a build, you're encouraged to build other things with them. Maybe this was meant for kids with siblings who couldn't get a lot of builds so they had to share. That way they could each build their own stuff with the combo model acting more like a starter build for them.
I've never loved a lot of the combiner models, but now I might have to try some of these. I think the steamroller actually has some potential too. One I've always really loved though is the Kabaya Bohrok combiner model. It's a little janky, but has such an interesting shape and use of pieces that even predated exo-force (using the bohrok "spines" (?) as guns).
Oh shit I remember making fused monstrosities with the 3 Bionicles I had as a kid. Just making 3 headed sixed armed units that could fight from any angle. I miss those days.
i know very little about lego but it was still really fun to watch this video! your editing definitely helps to keep it engaging but also i personally think it's fun to listen to someone talk about the intricacies something they're interested in, even if you don't know much about it. barely know what the fuck's going on but keep it up
The earliest "official" combination model I am aware of is the Blacktron Super Vehicle from the late 1980s, where you specifically ordered the instructions via catalogue to assemble 3 of the existing sets from that line together. I definitely remember a lot of combination models in the Lego magazine from the 1990s and 2000s, but I don't think I had the specific 2 sets to build any of the combinations I saw
I remember having one of those combiner sets from Bionicle. It was ages since I built them, but IIRC they were like 2 scorpions that turn into one big bird. Used to play lot with them in either form

This is awesome tbh
The discussion on Lucas Valor took me back. I was reading the Lego magazine at the time, and I remember that issue. That was such a weird concept for a build, and I'm glad to be reminded of it.
I actually really like that aero shredder. The little dynamite catapult bolted onto the side of the vehicle gives off a really ad-hoc vibe, like the power miner quickly created that as a weapon for their otherwise defenseless construction vehicle
How are you so chill? Like I can listen to you talk all day about Lego and I only found you through my recommendations.
Thank u for making these videos, I love that every niche topic you get into is something that I'm already super into. Great video as always
Amazing video and have really been enjoying the channel :]
it might partly be because ive never had any bionicle sets but honestly I think Lucas Valor looks absolutely awesome
This video proves I'll enjoy any content you make. Such a chill vibe
I really appreciated all the shots of the built sets that you yourself made! Definitely down for more Lego videos like this one
I actually really like the idea of large combination sets leaving a bit of pieces for you to make your own side build. They give you a nice big model to stimulate your creativity, then leave you with a smaller pile of parts to tempt you
I’d like to imagine big yellow has a titanium command rig down his pants at all times just in case
I fucking love when youtubers just ramble about stuff they love,I want more of that
Great video! I love the little outpost thingy you made at the end. It's very cute!
very swag vid! i always remember seeing these in the instruction booklets but never had the chance to make one. however, i thrived with those 3-in-1 sets; their diverse parts usually gave my kid brain the inspiration to somehow repurpose the handful of hinge pieces into a mech. (as a completely unrelated side note, your nails are very pretty and it inspired me to actually do mine again after not doing it for a hot minute :3 )
I love the energy in this video. You should do this more.
your videos are well written enough and on interesting enough topics that you can be off topic for most of a video and still have it be interesting content, great job!
I’m curious, do you ever plan on talking about Hero Factory? I think it’s legit my favorite line of Bionicle!
It will absolutely get mentioned more, I'm quite fond of it honestly
@@BigYellowSilly defo overhated
@@solgerWhyIsThereAnAtItLooksBad it has a few bad bits, but yeah very much so
I never was personally into Hero Factory, but from what I've seen, it doesn't look bad in my opinion. It looks like a cool constraction line, truthfully
@@BigYellowSilly YEEEAAAAAA LETS FUCKING GOOOOOO
One of my fav videos of yours, comforting to rewatch
Yes!! Thank you so much for the content you provide.
im glad to hear you mention hero factory, kino as always
Bro I would love to have a video of you talking about Bionicle for an hour
8:15 I nearly choked on my supper
As someone who recently tried to rebuild every Exo Force Robot Battle Suit in Studio, that comment on some alternate model instructions being lost media hits hard. A lot of 'em were ridiculously hard to find
The last vid of yours I saw was you talking about big slow projectiles in fighting games, but you also talk about Lego? Rad. Subbed.
We need some custom stickers for it lol
Edit: holy crap I even have an extra big bucket. This is so happening
I fully agree on the Crystal Crawler being the best Combination Model, and i have future plans to buy the two sets to make it, and i have made an idea for it that would add a reactor type thing and another thing to make the wheels wider
this is my favorite hybrid LEGO/Pokémon/FGC channel
Mixels comes to mind to me when I hear the word “combo model.”
The mixes, maxes, and murps are so goofy and funny at times, and sometimes are pretty sick. Personal favorite max is the MCFD Max from Series 8, where it transforms into a fire truck.
Overall, Mixels is just one hell of a fun LEGO theme with combo models related to it.
40 MINUTES??!!!!! The Yellow realy has biggened their limit this time!
Getting parents to buy both sets needed was a challenge but man is this all nostalgic
@@BigYellowSilly aaaaaaaahhh fair! I never use the stickers on interesting parts myself because I am an MOC type person
How can you be so rad all the time ?
as both a gaming and a lego fan i find this video on this channel very based and cool and fun 👍
thank you for bringing it to us
I wonder if LEGO made combo models that left out a bunch of pieces from their component sets for the reason you mentioned with the crystal crawler. By leaving pieces out of a build, you're encouraged to build other things with them. Maybe this was meant for kids with siblings who couldn't get a lot of builds so they had to share. That way they could each build their own stuff with the combo model acting more like a starter build for them.
That, and the fact that there's just a bunch of redundant parts that have no use for the build
Big yellow is my favorite power miners youtube channel
These remind me a lot of when Bakugan started doing those weird shaped ones that could exist alone or build a bigger character, i was so into those
Oh shit I remember making fused monstrosities with the 3 Bionicles I had as a kid. Just making 3 headed sixed armed units that could fight from any angle. I miss those days.
i know very little about lego but it was still really fun to watch this video! your editing definitely helps to keep it engaging but also i personally think it's fun to listen to someone talk about the intricacies something they're interested in, even if you don't know much about it. barely know what the fuck's going on but keep it up
i first found this channel due to fighting game balance stuff... but as of the content it built up since, i think i'm in love
Recently I combination 3 smallest Power Miners sets (from the 1st wave) and I can confirm, it is great fun
I remember having one of those combiner sets from Bionicle. It was ages since I built them, but IIRC they were like 2 scorpions that turn into one big bird. Used to play lot with them in either form
